C, Reeve was in Man of Steel for a few seconds at the end, it was a respectful nod towards him and his wife by the director...
After Superman 2 the rest just went down hill fast. So the first 2 and the reboot/continuation is fine by me.
Don't forget there was the Superboy series, Lois & Clark, Smallville, Krypton TV series.
The ship going through the crystal ceiling always makes me thing of Willie Wonka (1971) when the glass elevator goes up through the glass ceiling.
The comic explanation was that the glasses he wears are made from Kyrptonian crystal and it causes a distortion of Clark's face. That is why people don't recognize he is Superman.

Unlike R. Kelly, who tried to convince us all to believe that a sex pest can fly. He even thought about it every night and day.
Gene Hackman, Valerie Perrine, and Marc McClure are the only three principal cast members still with us today.

One thing that Christopher Reeve did better than every other Superman actor was to portray Clark Kent and Superman as different people.
Yeah, that scene where he takes his glasses off and literally "grows" several inches taller with his posture when he is considering telling Lois the truth. Really great acting moment there.
It's odd how everyone can look at Clark Kent and not even realize that it's really Superman with glasses on. His glasses don't really hide his face or change his looks that much. Same thing with Diana Prince and Wonder Woman.
@@dionkelly8420 As I've understood from other commenters beyond this one, it's not just the glasses. It's also the difference in personalities and how Clark and Superman carry themselves. It kind of plays into old stereotypes of "uncool" vs "cool" people. Not many people would suspect someone as timid, unassertive, and socially awkward as Clark Kent to be the brave, confident, and powerful Superman. Plus, people with Superman's abilities are very rare in his world.
I love Christopher Reeve, he looked like he stepped off the page of a comic. Cavill was great, but I grew up with Reeve as my Superman.
That Kent/Superman transition in Lois' flat is a superb piece of acting.
and reeve got jacked for the role...i saw his behind the scenes shirtless photo recently....he looked like the allstar superman when he was lifting that huge drill on the fotress of solutude while he was shirtless even the hair style....i agree hes the best casting for a superhero
You both mentioned the running complaint about Lois not recognizing that Clark is Superman. While not ever explicitly detailed in films, Clark uses his powers to affect his vocal cords to have a completely different voice in his alter ego. In addition to his large-framed glasses to hide facial details, changing his hair style, usually slightly baggier clothes to hide his physique, and taking on all the clumsy mannerisms as an actor does portraying a character. It’s always more than just the glasses for his disguise.
This is shown very well in the scene after the rooftop interview when Clark was about to reveal who he is... you see Christopher change from Clark to Superman. Amazing acting.
And, when worse comes to worst, helps to have master of disguise/shapeshifting buddies!
Also, Reeves said he patterned his Clark Kent after Cary Grant. Clark was too clumsy and running into walls. Reeves said they refilmed a few scenes early on where they decided to not make him so clumsy.
Emilia clarke knows best how it is to not be recognised in public. If she walks with Kit Harington or someone else from GoT crew the people always ask her to make the pic and never ask her to be in the picture. some even complained to kit who the woman is.

I was a young teen when Christopher Reeve had his accident, The 5 year old comic lover in my heart was crushed, The Man of Steel was broken. His sheer will to keep living and enjoying every moment of life was that of KAL-EL himself. He really was SUPERMAN.

Very true words. Many have worn the mantle of Superman, even delivered some fantastic performances.. . . . . . .But Christoper Reeve is now and always will be SUPERMAN. He personified the role not just on screen, but in real life.

One of my favorite scenes of all time is the helicopter scene. The lines, "Easy miss, I've got you." Delivered like he's caught her after her slightly losing her balance, and "You've got me, who's got you?" ALWAYS brings a smile to my face.
Christopher asked director Richard Donner how he should react at her reply. Donner said, "Don't worry... no one will be looking at you right then."

That scene couldn’t have gone without 8 shitty quips saying how ridiculous the dialogue is or how cartoonish his suit is or whatever. The amount of sincerity is something i miss so badly in superhero movies, just let these superheroes be superheroes and accept that they’re in this world of magic and aliens and shut up with the god damn quips in not funny anymore
Mario Puzo wrote this screenplay (famous for writing the Godfather). That’s the difference between movies now and then is you had writers back then like this who didn’t look at this as just a comic book movie. Puzo put in dialogue that would resonate with the masses and not just comic book fans.
What makes Christopher Reeve's Superman so special is that he's really the only Superman movie to get the character of Superman right he is kind, caring, cheerful that's what makes Superman great the powers aren't special what really makes Superman great is his kindness, his willingness to help others no matter how big or small, and his ability to see the good in others despite their flaws and Christopher Reeve did it perfectly he is really the only one to bring Superman to life
Watch the Superman and Lois series. It gets Superman's character down perfectly.

That's why Cavill's Superman was different - why bother to try copy Reeve's portrayel when he nailed it. Though I still think MoS is the best Superhero movie ever made.
@@alfredthegreat9543 I'm all for doing different interpretations of characters, but for me, Snyder SM went too far away from the core of the character so that he just didn't feel like Superman anymore. I think they could go dark but there needs to be a heart to him that I didn't come across for me. Lots of people loved it and that's cool. It just didn't do much for me.
@@kevdmillerIf Cavill had been given the chance in another solo outing, I'm sure that sequel would have explored the whole "having heart" thing further. Now, with the studio set on rebooting the Superman and DC universe once again, having botched their initial attempt at creating a Marvel-like cinematic universe, we'll sadly never know.

Fun fact: The woman on the train with little girl in the beginning is actress Noel Neill. She played Loise Lane in the 50's TV series of Superman starring George Reeves. She is also the old lady that passes away and leaves Lex Luther an inheritance in Superman Returns.
And the man sitting across from her is Kirk Allen, the first live action Superman from the 1930s serials.

And the little girl is Lois. I always thought that was a bit of a weird age gap...
In his description box, he refers to this version as "original" so I wanted to ask in which sense that he meant, as I don't think that he meant that it was plagiarized or lacked imagination and creativity. 🤔

For me Christopher Reeve is the definitive Superman. Even in the lesser movies (3 & 4) he still nails the role. I’m hoping Gunn takes us back to this version of Superman.
He is on the Mount Rushmore of comic book character actors.

Yo, I legit got a tear in my eye when Jen looks up at Holden when he is humming the tune of the movie and telling her about the composer. You can see that slow smile spread across her face. She loves that man. I hope I can be that lucky and happy someday.
No matter how many times I hear it, Christopher Reeve's scream at the death of Lois. . . . it still sends chills down my spine. It did when I first watched this at the drive in at age 8, and it does now at age 50.
Everytime I watch that part I cry a little.

Reeve and Donner truly made us believe a man could fly. As a Smallville fanboy, I was… super… psyched when he guest starred on the show. A passing of the torch so to speak. His and Donna’s deaths were truly devastating.
You're right, Superman is suppose to be light, bright and above all loving, to the point I would say love is the key word to describe Supes. It made him who he is, thanks to loving parents, it guides who he continues to be, loving wife and all, and the man just at his core loves humanity, willing to go out of his way to help any and every one regardless of nationality. Superman is the best of us, not something that should be 'darker and edgy to make tweens come to see'

I actually owe this movie a lot. It was literally the first movie I can remember as a child. It also spawned in me a love of stories that would be considered nerdy or geeky in 80's culture (and have become mainstream in modern day culture). It is no exaggeration to say I wouldn't be the man I am today if it wasn't for this movie.

So happy to see you watching this one. I had just turned 9 a few months before it’s release. It was truly a pop culture phenomenon and as the tag line suggested yes, we did believe a man could fly. I vividly remember the lines wrapping around my local theater and my mother taking me to see it. Waiting in line for what seemed to be an eternity and within steps of the front door the manager of the theater coming out to say “the 7pm showing is sold out except for 2” my mother abruptly cut him off shouting we’ll take them. First row the 2 seats against the wall to the far right of the screen. Horrible seats but it didn’t matter, we both loved it. Moms been gone 12 years now but that moment lives forever.
That flyby smile at the end is everything about why Reeve is the best Superman of all time!
Fun fact, Chris Reeves guest starred on Smallville as Dr. Virgil Swan as a proverbial passing of the torch to Tom Welling, by all accounts he was still an absolute sweetheart. The series also featured a tonne of casting from original Superman cast members, including Lana from Superman III, Annette O'toole as Martha Kent and Terence Stamp, General Zod, as Jor-El. Loving the journey so far, hope you make it to III.

I was raised in a religious cult and was not allowed to watch TV or go to movies when I was a child so I never got to see Superman in the theaters. I just saw it in theaters last week when they aired it for the Superman anniversary celebration. I am so glad I was able to experience that at least once! There were folks there sharing the experience with others just like you folks did here. Thank you for sharing your experience with us as well!

My mum had a fun little memory of watching this movie in theatres at release. At the part where superman was digging Lois’ car from the rubble, the audience was silent apart from when he ripped the car door off and some kid shouted out loud “how did he do that dad?!?”

I'm so glad Jenn understood that Superman was going back in time, when he was flying around the planet. So many people think he is just making the Earth spin backwards and criticize that. It drives me crazy. I'm glad she liked the movie.
7:57 Holden, based on Jen's reaction I think you ABSOLUTELY 100% need to show her DC'S League of Super Pets. Yes, it's a kids movie but I think she'll still absolutely love it just because of Krypto and Ace. Your kids can also watch it with you off-screen.
I will never forget my parents taking me to see this opening weekend, when I was a child. To this day, whenever I watch, I hear the audience reacting. This is the first superhero blockbuster, and the root of everything we now have. Christopher Reeve will always be THE Superman to me.
You just can't understand how this movie affect us in 1978 when this movie came out. We had never see anything like it. It held us spell bound. My favorite part is when he is running by the train and you see Louis and her mother, who by the way, played Lois Lane in the TV seties from the 50's. So cool.
This is the Superhero Anthem that all other superheroes wish they had.
You're absolutely right on with the very nature of Batman being a darker character and tone and Superman being lighter and a symbol of hope respectively! That is their nature, and that is the way that they are supposed to be! And that contrast of lighter conditions vs darker are so interesting when they work together both for a common purpose!
Now THIS is a Superman movie.

This makes me emotional too because of Christopher Reeve's sad end. And also because of John Williams' amazing musical score that really pulls you into the movie right from the beginning.
The TV show you mentioned is the Adventures of Superman, starring George Reeves (no relation). They filmed the first two seasons in black and white, but switched to color starting in 1954. I grew up watching it in syndication in the 1950s. Everyone knew this show, and George's version of Superman was the one that Christopher had to live up to in order to make it work. People who grew up on George's version were saying things like, "It's scary; Christopher Reeve IS Superman!" 🙂
I was 3 and still remember sitting in the theatre watching This amazing movie, I remember it like it was yesterday. 45 years later it still holds up.

@Felipe Hernandez-Pedroza yep , Batman 89 huge line , another classic tht holds up today and still my fav Batman movie. Movies are not made for fans anymore it's all political activism in super hero movies with characters being swapped and changed. Tht didn't happen in our day. It was the best fit for the role.
I remember being in cinema when i saw the Superman Returns trailer for first time. Didnt even know they were making a new Superman movie. Regarsless of how the film turned out (Rouths Superman was awesome regardless)

Best Superman ever! One of the often overlooked but great shots is at the end of the rooftop scene. Many people don't pick up that it's a one shot scene, superman flies away, Lois walks into her apartment and opens the door for Clark, all within around 30 seconds. An incredibly clever use of rear projection.
This scene struck me when I first saw it (Superman's first interview) because the musical theme derives from Richard Strauss' tone poem "Death and Transfiguration" which draws from the writings of Nietsche - who also wrote about the Ubermensch - which is German for Superman.
I heard that, at one point in its development, Superman (1978) was going to be a musical. That kind of makes sense if you listen to the poem Lois utters during their flying scene. It perfectly fits the score, thus 'Can You Read My Mind?' was obviously intended to the be sung at one point.
i think margot kidder just didn't want to sing that song.
There was already a Superman musical a few years before this called “Up, Up, and Away”. It’s pretty goofy and on TH-cam.
It was actually released as a single in 1979 sung by Maureen McGovern, who was famous for singing soundtrack songs.

You are absolutely correct, Holden, about this movie's legacy as groundwork. We take it for granted, but Mario Puzo's treatment that he handed in for this gem is still used to this day. We all still look forward to that 'obligatory' gleeful montage of a character discovering their powers. AND Donner. He was the one that said to the producer's, if we're going to do this, no punching in hallways, we have to take it out onto the streets. And we still take THAT for granted.
Heck I'll go so far as to say whenever I see a periled yellow school bus in a superhero flick, to me, it's a beautiful hat-nod to Donner. And it's still the best opener to a movie I've ever heard. In 1978, when eleven year old me heard "This is no fantasy, no careless product of wild imagination..." I just said "...ok" :) I still have my trading cards.

My favorite scene in this film is where Superman drops off Lois on the balcony after going flying, and in one long, uninterrupted shot, he flies away from the balcony and she walks through the apartment to answer the door where Clark is waiting. Pure movie magic.
When young Clark Kent was racing with the train, that young girl watching him through binoculars was young Lois Lane.

So glad y’all are watching these. This is my childhood and my personal favorite superhero movie even if they aren’t the best. My vote for superman 2 is the donner cut.
i don't have a huge preference between the two on their own but if they continue onto superman returns it has to be the donner cut as that is a direct sequl to the donner cut
When teenager Clark Kent races the train, the woman on the train is Noel Neill, who played Lois Lane on the old 1950s black and white TV show The Adventures of Superman. That was a really nice homage to Superman's legacy.

Easily my favorite superhero movie of all time for what it means. EVERYTIME I hear Superman's main theme song I tear up. It is SO good and emotional to me...

The personalities of the characters in this Supe movie are so much more vibrant than in any post-Reeve Supe movie made after it.
I'm glad that Jen really appreciated Christopher Reeves Superman for its beautiful qualities.
For me Chris Reeve will always be the best, not only for his performance as Superman, but for his incredible performance as Clarke Kent. No other actor brings Clarke to life as such a lovable character as does Chris Reeve. It truly is a testament to his awesome acting skill. By comparison, every other actors version of Clarke Kent is soulless and bland. And no other actor comes close to the comedic but ruthless performance of Lex Luthor as the great Gene Hackman.
As a teenager back in 1978, Margott Kidder really didn't float my boat as Lois, but as the years sped by and I watched her performance over and over, I came to realise just how brilliant and beautiful she actually was. And the way all the actors I that first movie brought the comic characters into the real world and made them live, makes me believe that Superman The Movie is an almost impossible act to follow.

Christopher Reeve was the undisputed master of playing both Superman *and* Clark Kent, showing that there's far more to the disguise than just the age-old joke of "Superman with glasses".
Possibly the best example of this is at 30:23. With or without the glasses, the man smoothly transforms before our very eyes just by standing up straighter and speaking with confidence.

I love seeing Holden’s enthusiasm in the intro, and his joy as the film begins. I feel exactly the same about this film.
I was 13 when it was released and I thought it was the best thing I’d ever seen. (Far better than Star Wars.)
I’m not American, but when Christopher Reeve says “I’m here to fight for truth, justice and the American way”, it reminds me why Superman is THE superhero.
Christopher Reeve was 6'4" and had to really build himself up to play Superman and refused to wear a padded suit with fake muscles.

Well what can I say...
In 1978 at the age of just nine, I watched Superman the movie in a cinema here in Sydney.
At that point in time Mr.Christopher Reeve showed me that a man could truly fly, I was mesmerised and have watched this movie countless times, this is a very special movie to me, I have an emotional connection to it, and as for John Williams score it still gives me chills.
There are many behind the scenes stories and fun facts to share, and one is that Christopher Reeve's voice was dubbed over the teenage Clark Kent, oh and also that scene where he's running alongside the moving train is the actor being suspended 300mm above the ground and his feet can't clearly be seen touching the ground behind the tall grass ( because that would be dangerous ) whilst he's supposedly running, also there's a longer version where a younger Lois Lane is sitting inside the train with her parents, and the actress playing her mother is the same actress that played Lois Lane in the B/W tv series from the 1950's, also this actress played the elderly bedridden woman in Superman Returns which was filmed here in Sydney, that was a good movie too and somewhat underrated in my opinion.
There's a lot more I can say but I'll leave it there, and I'm sure a lot of people would agree with me that this is arguably the best superhero movie ever made.

This representation of Superman is, in a word, wholesome. Christopher Reeve was perfect for this. The film resonated with me because it was positive and reflected the comic book Superman that I grew up with in the 60s and 70s. Also, Gene Hackman was delicious in the role of Lex Luthor, being so casually evil and witty. Great reaction!
I hope James Gunn sees this reaction and puts Krypto in his superman movie just for Jen. Her reaction to superman having a dog was wonderful.
After suffering from a horrible headache for a few hours at 5:00 this morning, this is just what I need.
Christopher Reeve is by far the best actor to play Superman. He made Superman and Clark Kent two separate characters. Most of the others play Clark as Superman with glasses. Routh kinda tried to make Clark different. But Reeve made Clark so much fun. I can imagine it was great fun for Superman/Kal El to play such a nerdy character. The scene where Clark takes off his glasses and becomes Superman right it front of us is a great movie moment. It's easy to believe that people could look at Clark and not think for a moment he's Superman.
The way they showed Clark running next to the train is they hung the actor off the back of a truck a foot above the ground and he ran in place.
Easily the greatest superhero soundtrack of all time. Perfectly captures the essence of Superman!
The first time I watched this, I was surprised how wholesome it was. So different than most superhero movies made today.
Movie series? 80’s films! 80’s movies just hit different. The Last Starfighter (1984), The Spock Trilogy (Star Trek 2,3&4, 1982-1986), Tron (1982), Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure (1989) and others.

This movie has one of the all time great moments on how to do storytelling, on how to adapt a property with a big change from its source material AND addresses the ever present complaint that "Superman is too powerful, thus hard to relate": Jonathan's death. In the comics at time (and for a long time after) Jonathan was alive and well, he did not pass away and he wasn't the "Uncle Ben" moment that so many adaptations turned him into later... But it's incredibly poignant and shows just how Superman is not all-powerful: for all his godlike powers, he could not save his own father from such a mundane thing like a stroke. It's incredibly humbling and teaches Superman the harsh lesson that he cannot save everyone. *THAT* is Superman's true weakness and it does wonders for his humanity.

Definitely my favourite Superman movie of ALL time, Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve understood what made the character long lasting and memorable I mean yeah I’m a fan of Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill but their version was too dark imo I get that was the point but if there’s one character that doesn’t work with being super grimdark it’s definitely Kal-El which is why I’m hoping James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy gets back to being colorful and optimistic like Superman should always be
last bit of snyder's justice league gave me hope they were going to give cavill a better direction but then it turns out they were going to do knightware world and i was crushed again. probably for the best as he could not do a convincing clark kent
The promotional phrase was, “You will believe a man can fly.” I saw this movie opening night back in 1978. This version of Superman is from the golden age however; the Henry Cavill, Man of Steel version was closer to the original. Batman and Superman used to kill it to the comic book code they changed it.
This version of Lex Luthor became the new model where he became less mustache twirling to cold calculated wealthy villain. If you watch the current series Superman and Lois, you get more of the type of Superman you are looking for. By the way, Brandon Route reprised his Superman role during the Crisis on Infinite Earths saga.

I was in the opening night audience when this was released, Holden. It was nothing less than MAGIC. When Superman does the one handed catch of the helicopter, everyone was on their feet, cheering!!!
Love this movie. For Superman II, there’s a 1987/1988 ABC special cut for TV that blends the two director cuts! My dad ‘taped’ it for me. I never saw the theatrical cut of Superman II until I was an adult and was like,”what the hell is this..?” Ha. You can find the blended cut online. Highly recommend it.
I've loved this movie since childhood! I had a huge crush on Christopher Reeve! He'll always be my favorite Superman! Also, the show Smallville is GREAT and definitely worth reacting to! ❤❤❤❤
One of the stories about Christopher Reeves that sits most intensely with me is from his autobiography. After his accident, he was in ICU and scared out of his mind as well as severely depressed. And then one day Robin Williams walks in, fully in character, and made his close friend laugh again. Those two had come up together, and it was humor that saved Reeves. So much of the good that was done after the accident is due to one person wanting to bring joy back to his friend. Something about that kind of friendship speaks to me when I feel down.

Saw this when I was 6 and to this day whenever someone says “Thanks” in our family the response is always “aww, don’t thank me, we’re all apart of the same team. Goodnight. “ and we all motion as if we’re flying away. Hahahaha. This movie blew me away as a kid.
I cannot tell you how excited I am to see Jen’s face when he uses his logo as a weapon in the sequel, I was 12 and I think my exact words were “what the hell is that”

I think the Donner cut is much better than the theatrical. Even as a kid I didn't like the theatrical.
I’ll admit as someone who took continuity errors seriously as a kid the Donner Cut threw me a little. But the more I learned, the more I understood he only had so much to work with. Using test footage was always kinda funny though.
That's only in the theatrical cut. It's not in the Richard Donner cut if the movie.

I'm 66 and grew up watching the original black and white Superman on television. Also watched the original Batman on tv.
This movie makes me emotional too :) I haven't even gotten 10 minutes into this reaction and I can't stop smiling. I love that you're doing these! I would recommend at least doing Superman 3 just because it's so classic in it's corny-ness. I applaud you for considering doing both cuts of Superman 2. I love them both for different reasons so it would be great to see both reactions.
Couldn't agree more about Superman 4, but Superman 3 is a campy classic, imo. I'll admit, I'm a Richard Prior fan, loving The Toy, and Brewster's Millions; which creates some nostalgia bias, I guess. But Superman 3's story is actually a fairly impactful one, when considering where the world was in relation to concept of what the potential of computers was going to be.
If you watched the last 2 Terminators, but not 3 and 4 of Superman, then are you saying Arnold Schwarzenegger deserves more respect than Christopher Reeves?
Also, Superman fighting himself is a classic depiction of the inner struggle of good and bad we have all as internal potential.
Finally, as always I enjoy your reactions. I'm just a huge Superman fanboy, with a special place in my heart for Superman 3. Connected to my childhood, my love of computers, and Superman's attempt to always do the right thing. Keep up the great work😎
Listen carefully in the opening. When the title card appears, you can practically hear the orchestra sing “Superman.” Richard Donner has a story about interpreting John and the orchestra screaming “Brilliant!”
The glowing Kryptonian suits was made with the same material movie screens were made of. A light was projected onto them which made them glow. The same effect was used for the lightsabers in the first Star Wars film.

Guess it was when Holden watched this Matt that I confused.
My father was in college at the time this movie came out. He told me a story about how he and a few guys snuck a few beers into the theater when they went to see this movie and during the scene where Lois is interviewing Klark as Superman one of guys dropped beer bottle on the floor of the theater and it rolled VERY LOUDLY under the seats taking it's sweet time to reach the front of the theater!
To this day I can't help but imaging the sound of a loud glass bottle rolling beneath my feet while Superman and Lois are having their moment together. LOL
