I remember watching that performance with my then-wife. At the time, I hadn't heard Metallica yet, and thought they were just another hair metal band. When the song began, I believed we were in for yet another tired-ass hair band ballad. When they kicked in with the jam, I was floored. My initial impression was blown to pieces. Thankfully, a friend/bandmate of mine had bought tickets to the upcoming Metallica show. I bought one off him, and caught the "...and Justice for All" tour. It was the first time I saw the band live. When I heard Metallica was playing on the Grammy's, I was 17. The first thing I did when I got the news was go out and buy a brand new, fresh VCR tape to record it so I could watch it over and over again as the moment when Metallica and all metal FINALLY got recognized as a true genre that had been overlooked for years.
That momentous performance was only topped by the sheer audacity of the Grammy committee giving the award for "Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Recording award" to Jethro fucking Tull!!!! So when the Mighty Met actually DID win for the Black Album several years later, Lars was absolutely vindicated by saying "The first thing we have to do is thank Jethro Tull for not putting out an album this year!"

So it was just baffling as to why they were even nominated for that category.

I was a 15 year old kid in 1989 and I'd heard some of the metalheads at school speak of this legendary band "Metallica." I'd never run across their music at all since it never got airplay on the radio and we didn't have cable TV/MTV at home. I was on a church retreat and had some downtime in the hotel room alone for an hour or so and tuned in MTV on the set and pretty soon this music video started playing. In the late winter of 1989 James Hetfield reached through that fucking TV, grabbed my heart and soul and never let go.

Bro you were the right age to see the legit Metallica, the age of alcoholica, when they were a badass metal band before they wrote the black album and changed their style from thrash metal to soft tv and radio friendly “metal” which was the equivalent of soft rock to hard rock. After the black album Metallica never wrote another amazing album. They had a few hits here and there but nothing album wise that was front to back amazing. It’s my opinion their last amazing record was and justice for all and it was all downhill after Cliff Burton died and they picked up Jason Newstead to finish recording and justice for all.

That’s awesome because I think this is EXACTLY right, you can hear the nerves in James’ voice when he first starts singing. Which is crazy because by then they’d already been all over the world but, without getting into politics those people Metallica played for that day are NOT James’ people. Having already been an extremely shy person who didn’t even want to sing in the band in the first place he was probably terrified when they first started & I don’t think anyone on the planet could blame him.

To me it was sort of like that. Except I was around 14 in the early-mid 90s, and a girl friend of mine was asking me if I liked metallica. My response was like oh that's one of those horrible noisy bands, I don't like that shit. She insisted in borrowing me a cassette, and reluctantly accepted. It was Ride The Lightning. The moment that started playing at home, I got hooked. After that I progressed into a full throttle metal head. Not even death will do us apart. \m/

This was a very big deal at the time. For a very large audience to witness Metallica on prime tv. James was noticeably nervous, especially at the beginning, but i think Lars, Kirk, and Jason really let loose (easier for them, they're not at the mic!), but i think James fed off their energy and just loosened up and rocked out with them. Kirk's solos obviously were top notch, and the energy that of course Jason was bringing and Lars banging it out on that great kit (and camera angles of the kit) were great. A big deal indeed. I was actually nervous too before they played!

I had grown up with the 'classics' of rock in the 70s on Chicago radio, and after moving to L.A. in '79 at the age of 10, listening to many of the classics, and more of the classics thanks to the better rock stations in L.A. in the 80s. I could appreciate the older hard rock bands from the 60s and 70s. I was exposed to harder/'speedier' metal starting with Metallica circa '83, and as a teen, felt they were snubbed. But later in life, I realized that most likely, the judges gave Jethro Tull the nod more out of respect and the fact that that was probably their last album, and that Metallica had many years to win that category later on. I agree with you that no matter what--award shows suck whatever the topic (music, movies, TV).

Watched this live as a young teen with my Dad who, at the time, thought that anyone with long hair was a dope smoking criminal hippie maggot. I was sure I could convince him my Metallica passion wasn't misplaced but, man, that first half vocal performance was wince-worthy embarrassing. My dad was side-eyeing me like, "This? Really?", then James, who was definitely nervous and apparently getting annoyed about it, swears on live TV (cut this sh*t off from me) and it ruined any hope I had of conversion. Yes, they made me proud in the 2nd half, but the damage was done. Set my paternal relationship back for years.
Epilogue: 20ish years later, my brother, father & 4 nephews got together and jammed Guitar Hero: Metallica. While the nephews were playing 80s Metallica on these big silly colorful buttons, I was playing a real guitar note-for-note next to them. I think that was when my Dad finally "got" it. Good times.
Anyway, will probably delete this tomorrow when totally sober, but damn, this brought back memories. Thanks MetalliGeek.

I couldn't stand it then and really didn't listen I just thought it was a bunch of noise and he had to go listen elsewhere. Lol. Anyhow, their appearance on the Grammys and the new heavy metal category was going to be a big deal and so we had people over that night all crowded around the TV to watch the big event. It was pretty amazing and I was all-in after that, especially after Jethro Tull took home the award for best heavy metal album which was utterly absurd. Since then I've been a die-hard Metallica fan. 53 now and back in Chicago and have been to several of their concerts. Took my now 34 yo daughter to a few concerts over the years while she was growing up. But that night lives in my memory forever like it was yesterday.

By the end, he knew more Metallica songs than anyone I’ve ever met and taught me so many riffs I could never figure out at that time (basically pre-internet and I don’t read music). He read music but preferred to learn by ear and I’ve never seen anyone as talented at that as he was. I miss him dearly and think of him every time I listen to Metallica. I still, and always will, have his 1956 Gibson he left to me when he passed away. @@user-br2gi8kh5sMetallica is just as important as Sabbath because they both progressed the metal scene in their own ways. Black Sabbath created the sound, Grunge bands fucked around with it and created some great pieces and arguably added a lot of metal influence, then bands like Slayer, Metallica, Megadeth and so on inspired the metal scene to evolve in very beautiful and awesome ways. They each got their flavor that they add to the dish that is Metal. Try to open your mind a little more

Everyone used to set up tents along the gravel roads and cookout and camp, and this blond haired teenager (looked like Christian Slater in the legend of Billie Jean) probably 6 years older than me, came over to our tent and said here "check this out" and handed me a cassette of 'and justice for all.'

I found the” Kill em all “album by chance, when vinyl records where still a thing 1987-88. Went to buy Anthrax and King Diamond, found the Randy Rodes Tribute,Ozzy special dual record album, that was pricey, but totally worth it, I had $10 left and saw this album cover with a hand and bloody sickle, thought it was cool looking and just grabbed it, didn’t know a thing about this band, never heard of them. Went back to my brothers house which I had just moved into, he had a serious stereo system that was so fricken loud, well I put that vinyl on, lit up a joint and and began a journey into mind meltdown.. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing the way Hit the lights started was epic, it was the music that had been in my head , but didn’t know existed, it was so loud and so fast and so hard that by the end of the four horsemen there was a knock at my door, I freaked out, thought it was the cops, it wasn’t, it was four dudes from next door house, they were like “dude, what the fuck are you listening to ?”
I said this band called Metallica !
They said we are a rock band and thought you were guys playing instruments, cause it was so fucking loud ! I proceeded to play the rest of the album and we were all blown away. The next day I bought a bunch of blank cassette tapes and dubbed copies and handed them to all my friends..everyone was freaking out.
I said Metallica will be the biggest metal band of all time and I was right !
    Sorry, long rant 🖕

I was a teen in the L.A. area and listening to California State University, Northridge's radio station. They had punk and other music at night. I wasn't into punk per se, but liked a lot of the music. Well, this speedy, metal-like song with a very catchy rhythm blasts out of the speakers and I call the station right away (there were only probably a few dozen listeners so it was easy to get through) and the DJ tells me 'Metallica's Phantom Lord'...I was hooked. A couple years later in 1986, me and friends head down to the Long Beach Arena to see Metallica open for Ozzy, but little did we know, Cliff Burton would be dead about 5 months later.
