You should stir the coffee right before you take a sample so that the source is as homogenous as possible; that’s probably why you got varied results from doing back-to-back tests of the same cup.

Good video but gotta correct one point: darker roast drinks generally has more caffeine than lighter roast because: 1. For the same dose (same weight of roasted beans) darker roast consists more beans (raw beans get less dense as they are roasted) 2. Darker roast beans are more porous, making them easier to extract

Detective time. At 9:26 you can see that the espresso takes up ~1/3 of the volume of the cup which is a 4oz cup. If we assume there's about 1.33oz of espresso (~40ml), some quick math tells us that the shot actually had around 145mg of caffeine. I would guess that Blank Street's estimate was right on the money!
So the variance is off the charts.. that’s good to know.. but it would have been awesome to see the variance of canned / bottled caffeine drinks… maybe in a future vid?

I haven't had caffeine in over a year. I would definitely recommend getting rid of it from your drinks and food. You won't have more energy, but you'll basically level out, and your energy levels will be rather consistent. Though if you can't do without coffee, you could go decaffeinated as apparently coffee does have liver health benefits if you drink it in moderation.

Reason 1 assuming I buy only one cup of coffee a day in under 2 years I save money just buying a de1 and making my own

Reason 3 to get a good extraction and a good flavor that’s not astringent or bitter you need the barista to properly set up the grinder distribute the particles in the basket evenly get a even and correct puck tamp then stop the pull at the correct volume not one did that in ten shots here
Reason 4 if your actually want to cut down on caffeine but don’t want to give up coffee your not going to get that from any shop he went to your best bet is to buy beans that aren’t specialty grown to have high caffeine content (specifically don’t buy arabica or robusta that I would assume everyone he tested used you can’t extract more caffeine than the beans actually started with) and make your own

Edit 2 I just randomly realized what he said to be clear roast level has nothing to do with caffeine content
Roast level determines flavor and how unstable the chemicals (the chemicals are natural and what your extracting for flavor) in the bean the higher the roast the easier the extraction is because the chemicals are less stable and more likely/easy to be removed from the grounds in the puck

@@RafiGish He said hes not dependant anymore not "recovered". Based on a study, it takes at least 18 days ish to form a new habit. He also said he has quit coffee not caffeine so he could of just swapped to tea within the last few weeks.
@@RafiGish i think you mean enhancing your life for 17 yrs
@@RafiGishyou would be surprised. Quit nicotine after years of heavy use (vaping) and only had about 3 days of withdrawal
Loved this video! Good information to know. And respect for walking around NYC in a lab coat hahah
I started drinking decaf coffee after finding a company that makes really good flavored decaf coffees. I've noticed I don't crash as much with the same amount of sleep.
My dad accidentally brought me a tasty decaf version of my regular coffee and i only noticed 3 days later after I stopped crashing in the afternoon..
What’s the name of this magical decaf coffee
What is the name of the Beans?
Mcdonald's actually doesn't use Espresso in their Iced coffees, or at least they didn't when I worked there like 10 years ago. The process was just double strength regular coffee by putting 2 portions of coffee grounds instead of one portion and brewing a regular pot
I don’t doubt they used to do that. But this idea is frightening if you know anything about coffee brewing and extraction 😂

Such a dope video idea, great execution *chefs kiss*
You absolutely should have done 3 tests at each location and gotten the average of all of them
OK look, you are a f*cking genius. Your incorporation of funny tactics, loose but reasonable science, excellent intertwined video overlays, sponsors, interesting concepts and ideas, and practical norms is just off the f*cking charts. Just top notch, well done content and creation - you're going to continue to blow up.
And you are invited anytime to CrossFit related content at the local gym of mine!
There's SO much going on in this video, I actually feel caffeinated just watching. 😳
million sub channel in the making, great stuff keep it going!
I've had to downscale to a decaf every second day, from two double espressos a day, due to fibromyalgia, and it's amazing the difference in caffeine levels at different places! Some, it might as well have been brown water, and some give me a buzz!
My wife has fibro but she won't quit the caffeine lol. I estimate she averages 800mg a day. 🎉
There's no such thing as decaf coffee. That's called water. Don't drink anything diet, decaf, etc. The processing makes it even more unhealthy than the original. Instead you should drink half the amount of real coffee to adjust!
Decaf coffee is so bad for you. It is run through a chemical process to rid the caffeine. Try drinking tea on your off days instead:)
5:30 safety goggles everywhere lmao
As an Asian American who is also not a doctor, I’m questioning my life choices…I mean, caffeine intake!! 😂😂😂
everything sucks more if you use caffeine. use it in rare circumstances as a drug, when you need it, same as you would need other drugs like tylenol, anti-biotics, etc.
caffeine will ruin your sleep depth, make you more tired, and make you more irritable and moody. and you will be able to focus and strongly as you can naturaly with proper rest, diet, and exercise.
and caffeine blocks healthy blood flow to your extemities, and smaller vessels, so less feeling, and nutrients getting to your skin. and men suffer from ED because of caffeine, (less blood flow)
@@mythbuster6126 yes, sugar is terrible.
caffeind has benefits, yes, but like any drug, some benefits some negative effects.
I really thought I was watching someone with over a million followers. Your content is awesome man
you made my day! working to get there
Now do the tests with energy drinks 🤘🏻
One of the most interesting videos of this channel ! Recommend
this channel will continue growing for a long time, great production quality
New to the channel but this is absolutely essential work you're doing my friend. TYSM! Would love to see the 7-11 coffees (mainly the pre-made cold served iced ones) as well as the "espresso" 7-11s offerings. I know those can wildly vary as the have some that are fresh ground beans in a sort of 'expresso' quick espresso machine that's not a half bad latte/mocha/cappucino for only about $2-$3
What a funny episode, lets play a drinking game everey time Shervin says something wrong drink, from expresso to two double shots 😂
This is incredible. This guy deserves to be a big-time youtuber.
The caffeine content in a coffee bean varies quite a lot. You'd have to test a whole lot and average over time.
And you need to stir the espresso before you take an excerpt... 🥲
It varies between different genetic varieties but it is very unlikely you’ll get a lot of variation between doses of 100+ beans since they average out
Nah, at the amount a place like McDonald's is roasting you would be pretty unlikely to ever see any real variance.
@@alittlebitgone is that your opinion? He clearly showed variance in the video. The beans themselves have a pretty big difference in the concentration of caffeine. It's just a simple fact
I love you're friendly tone of voice and beard☺️
Good video brah. did you get an editor? I'm debating whether to get one lol
Thank you!! Yes he helps edit majority of each video
Lolol Shervin was hilarious in the googles. Loved the video
1st test already made it sus cuz a 30% diff between samples means we are missing a crucial step on how to reduce that variance.
Mentioned Huberman, aight im sticking it through :P
Shervin...... _such_ a good video!!!!!!! Sooooooooooooo much charisma 🤩
What a cool and enjoyable video to watch while I’m drinking my Freddo Espresso at an airport in Greece!! Fun fact, 9/10 Greeks walk around with a cup of coffee in hand.
Love it! Reminds me of college chemistry experiment to determine caffeine in coffee vs. tea. Good times! 😊
Would have loved a tl;dr summary. After seeing you test one, how can I rewatch that 8 times in a row.
Very interesting, I appreciate this as I drink a lot of caffeine depending on the day and what I have to get done. Can you do Yerbae?
As a lover of black coffee, I approve of those scientifically analyzing the coffee products available on the market. The taste and enjoyment of drinking coffee and stimulating the mind is not always appreciated. Of course avoiding the pitfalls with adenosine is key to being always able to enjoy this delightful drink.
Top tier AD sponsor video. I didn’t have to fast forward lol
Wow, this is nearly 1M views. Congratulations 🎉👏 dude
Dude, Shervin, this is great content and production, keep it up. Please let your shervinheads know when you’re in SF, great spots for runs, lift, etc
Sent with Apple Watch Ultra
This is a cool video. I would’ve loved a video that measures the caffeine amount n a regular cup of coffee and also the difference in caffeine between light, medium, and dark roast. Express shots are concentrated so they would have high amount of caffeine.
A second test is helpful but I'd put the coffee in a bottle and shake it because your swings are way to high to be good info
You are a scientist! Great video. Loved watching this content.
Thanks bro!!
Awesome video as always 💙💙💙
I love a good math and science guy…I’m in love😂😂❤❤❤❤
I don’t know if you’ll see this but I really enjoyed this video, thanks!
You always surprise me with what your next video is!
Now we need you to do this with regular coffees!!!
Good video but gotta correct one point: darker roast drinks generally has more caffeine than lighter roast because:
1. For the same dose (same weight of roasted beans) darker roast consists more beans (raw beans get less dense as they are roasted)
2. Darker roast beans are more porous, making them easier to extract
can you do this for like, can, bottled, and ountain soda, in a particular dr peppper? i bet some new age soda brand would sponser that
such a cool video idea Shervin. Youre an inspo for me
I wish I could pull this look off. 🤓 Lab coat + Shorts + Glasses + Cap🔥🔥( Doc Headphones too 😆)
3 certainties in life are death, taxes and this channel hitting a million subs. Content is 🔥, his funny AF and how many other content creators regularly do uploads with their son 😂😂
first video I've seen from you. liked and subscribed.
please do cold brew at these shops
Detective time.
At 9:26 you can see that the espresso takes up ~1/3 of the volume of the cup which is a 4oz cup. If we assume there's about 1.33oz of espresso (~40ml), some quick math tells us that the shot actually had around 145mg of caffeine.
I would guess that Blank Street's estimate was right on the money!
So the variance is off the charts.. that’s good to know..
but it would have been awesome to see the variance of canned / bottled caffeine drinks… maybe in a future vid?
This dude is JUST a scientist walking around this is hilarious lol
I remember in 2006 when a single _Monster Assault_ energy drink would give me energy for HOURS. Thanks to regulations, I now have diabetes.
They reduced the caffeine and dramatically increased its sugar content
Just buy caffeine in pills and that's it, no sugar...
Okay this video timing is spot on because I've been looking to get some sort of clean energy drink/coffee/caffeinated drink that clearly states how much caffeine is in each drink. Any other recommendations??
4 sponsor-segments in 13 minutes? Cool shit dude.
Shoutout to SponsorBlock.
This guy is heroic in professional attire! Subscribed!
So glad I found this channel.
Nah, chocolate is not coming out of my diet, ever, lol.
His lab coat is total Heath Ledger's Joker vibes, and I love it.
Im betting by the end of next year this channel will hit a million subscribers
