My favorite character in Smash Bros. is actually a tie between Mr. Game & Watch and the Mii Brawler. Mr. Game & Watch I love because of his diverse moveset, and you gotta love that judge attack. Mii Brawler because, it's your Mii, you fight hand-to-hand combat with him or her, and overall it's just really fun to use in general.

My fav is Yoshi. Gotta love that egg drop off the edge
My favourite Smash character so far is Greninja. I just love his tricky and fast gameplay style a lot. Plus his goofy voice clips make him sound absolutely adorable. :D
Also, I'm in the same boat as you, Nathaniel. I usually play with items as well. I'm not a competitive player for multiple reasons I'd rather not go into detail about. Really, the only items I turn off are things like the beetle because it's just plain annoying and I never seem to be able to escape it and the beehive because I'm absolutely terrified of bees to the point even video game bees make my skin crawl.

My mains in order were Ganondorf, DK, Pit, Ice Climbers, Wii Fit Trainer, Zero Suit Samus, Link, a little Ness and Bowser Jr., and finally my current main, Yoshi. I am sure it has been made clear, I started in Brawl, but I have actually gotten good enough to beat many of my brother's college friends who still to this day actively play Melee and Smash 4. I am really happy with my ability and was while maining Link, but very recently realized I will never do well competitively with any character that low tier and with such slow attacks, and that was when I rethought my entire game, and I narrowed my new main down to a list including surprisingly Bowser, Pikachu and Marth, and unsurprisingly, Sheik. I felt like I had both the most fun and the most control playing Yoshi so like you playing Dry Bones in Mario Kart DS, it just feels so natural!
I'm glad that Doc and Sonic got onto the list. As they are my 2 undisputed mains in Smash Ultimate!

Mario (SSB4). He’s very easy to use and is a very balanced character. He also has fast ground and air speed, being the 27th fastest character in ground and 9th fastest in air. He also has high combo potential, and he was heavily buffed from Brawl. We also can’t forget about that forward aerial. Makes me beat everyone in Smash :). Although the FLUDD is not the best choice for his down b, it is very useful for pushing characters off the stage, which you can meteor smash later. I’m glad Sakurai buffed Mario. He went from tier F to A. Nice!
