I was really into this game as a kid. I was so excited for the sequel in fact that I wrote a nicely written letter to Warren Spector asking for the game early. Months later, I was sent a box full of Epic Mickey Merch like a cup, a hat, pins, signed sketches from the developers, the official artbook for the first game, and a response back in the form of another letter. The team said they they were having a rough time developing the game and losing moral, but my letter reminded them that they were making the game for young Disney fans like myself and boosted the team's spirit. They even said that when the game released that they would send me a free copy of the game for whatever console I wanted. While I never actually got that copy because the company was shut down soon after its release, it's a moment I'll never forget.

Fun Fact about the Clock Tower boss: Within the lore of the game the “It’s a Small World” song was what drove the Clock Tower mad, and the devs originally wanted the player to redeem him a different way. The original concept was the same until the player is brought to its face, where instead of repainting the happy face, the faceplate would open revealing a small chamber containing a record player that the player would destroy to “stop the music” (hence the good path pin name)

One part of Epic I really enjoyed is how they managed to shrug off certain tropes usually associated with video games. Best example would have to be their perfect excuse for using what seems to be the same characters over and over. Mickey even says that these extras all look the same, and Gus later clarifies that they were actually scrapped, old draft versions of same or similar toon, all ended up here.

I am SO GLAD a lot of people in the recent years have finally accepted that this game is a Masterpiece. It may be a flawed platformer, but the story, the style, the concept itself is everything that gets you so involved that it makes you let those little mistakes pass. This game was my introduction to the Nintendo Wii, it didn't age that well in terms of visual quality, but does that really matter? I've made a lot of memories, and I still do. Everything in this game is perfect, in my opinion.

I played this like 5 times through when i was younger. I found oswald so appealing because, well, he was “the forgotten one.” Story was better than most stuff ive played when it comes to action platformers. I’ve watched almost all the available seriously old Walt Disney films and shorts, seeing characters that i saw in those extremely old shorts being remembered was exciting, and melancholic too. I mean, they were forgotten, how would you feel if you got absolutely forgotten? Most of these characters hadn’t seen the light of day for over 50+ years at that point. Hell, some were from the 30’s. Disney started making cartoons in 1920! And Oswald the lucky rabbit was from 1927! Imagine being forgotten for almost 100 years. Oswald was almost 80 years old and forgotten when epic mickey was made. The kind of feelings that would leave you with, and then you see your copycat. You see he was the one responsible for ruining your utopia.
Its a shame we never really saw Julius in the game, Walt Disney’s first reoccurring character. We never got to see characters from Disney’s “Alice Comedies” series of comics. Which is where he all started after-all. It would have been excited to see some of them, to see actual characters from the 1910’s being remembered. It makes sense we didn’t see them because they probably don’t have the rights to them anymore, probably public domain by now.

On the concept of the game's art direction, you may notice time and time again that Wasteland is mainly a ravaged and torn apart version of Disney World, as Dark Castle is a abandoned and destroyed version of Disney Castle, the boat rides in the beginning is a ruined version of the "It's a small world" ride, and the Dark Manor in Bog Easy is literally the Dark Manor from Disney World, even has the stretch paintings!

I love the darker side of Disney, it really shows how the company can make media for everyone. And personally, the game are my favorite form of their media. Kingdom Hearts, despite its admittedly insane story, is still amazing and does delve into darker themes. Especially when you talk about the keyblade war and heartless. Twisted Wonderland is japanese mobile game that recently had a global release and delves into a world where the villains are praised. It also talks about the blot with its recent chapter revealing information about the history of the world and the Shroud family.

I've always loved this game to bits and pieces... But yeah, by the time I was finishing my 3rd playthrough (yeah, seriously), I was just wondering about the things it could've done better.
I could say that the choices between being good or evil are rather minimal for the plot... but Mickey isn't an evil character. At worst, he's just impulsive and mischievous. Although there could've been a better incentive to actually ponder between making a "good" choice and a "bad" choice. The fact these are usually so paper-cut clear does make it less interesting. I mean, why use thinner on a pump, which you've been told it makes the thing work shoddily, when paint is obviously the much better option? And the rewards you get with the paint path are usually way better too. The only incentive for such is merely to see a second playthrough of the game, which isn't bad... but it is a little uninspired. And let's be honest, making the thinner path always the bad path, and the paint path always the good path is a little basic. Sure, one is a tool of creation and the other of destruction, but they're just tools. Like folks usually say, "it's the choices that make the man, not his tools", or something like that. Using the thinner cleverly for restoration, or paint in an equally clever way for destruction, that would've been hella creative! They did it well for the platforming and obstacle traversal, why not for the choice making?
Now, I didn't mind the extensive side quests, it actually gave me a lot to do as I kept going through the game, and they were a good incentive to explore!... but one thing I don't like is the fact you can't freely revisit older areas in the game. What, you actually didn't manage to find an important item in Tomorrow City, or Tortooga, or the Lonesome Manor? Welp, tough luck, see ya on the next playthrough, chump! Sure, you can buy _some_ items, like the animatronic parts, but these are expensive as heck. Now, this could work as incentive for being thorough with your exploration... after you notice this fact for the first time, by which is then a little too late, which still kinda sucks. I just don't see a natural explanation to why we just can't... go back to the damn thing. We can visit the hub areas, why not the areas they connect to? They're not much of a hub if they don't serve as the hub to something at all times. And this is all why the World of Gremlins, as fantastic as it is in terms of visuals, content and exploration... still ends up feeling super disconnected from the rest of the game. You revisit Mean Street a lot during the game, it's the main hub. Yet you don't return to the World of Gremlins even _once._ Not even during the last part of the game, where you revisit all hub worlds and almost the entirety of Tomorrow City. So... was the World of Gremlins just a lengthy "tutorial"? Just a transitional area? It kinda sucks you can't go back... especially since it also has a proper village.
And then there's the stuff that was cut. No, I don't mean the concept art. I mean the areas that were conceptualized, some even being developed, but didn't make the cut. Wonderland, an area based on the vast cut content from the Alice in Wonderland movie! We could've seen the Mock Turtle, the Gryphon, the Jabberwocky! Maybe some of the characters that only appeared in a series of comics that were a direct sequel to the movie, does _anyone_ even know these? They had Humpty Dumpty and the White Queen, and more! How about the other cut area that also made it into the game but we never play through, the Beanstalk Factory? I'll be honest, I don't even know what area of Disneyland parks was that one supposed to be inspired on, but for it to make it into promotional material, even the intro cutscene of the game? It had to be something big, even if the level was never made. Disney Gulch, based on Frontierland, another one (though that one appeared on the sequel, but... well, y'know, it's the sequel). And there's other ideas that didn't fit with the final story and setting but could've inspired cool stuff! An underwater kingdom ruled by an older design of Ursula, that could've been dope!
I'll always love this game, don't get me wrong, but it's because of my love for it that I wish it really could've been the best version of itself! That it could be looked at fondly more consistently over the years, rather than as "the game that could've been"!

I honestly really like the idea that was used for the concept art, as in the whole "go as over the top as possible, then dial it back bit by bit until it's approved to find out where the line is drawn"
It feels like it would result in some really cool and fresh stuff, by finding out RIGHT where something or someone's limit is, and then sitting right on it.

Everything about Epic Mickey has fascinated me since I originally played it back on release day. The story, art, concepts, and music are all something that feels so...non-Disney at first glance. I remember being scared of fighting the Beetleworx Pirates in the Neverland stage after finding out they were actual Toons that were forcibly changed into robotic servants of the Blot.
Shoutout to the Tomorrowland level, that MUSIC is still stuck in my head.

Part of me is going "who cares if it's not horror"-cause sure you have covered things like horror games and such, but you've always put a strong emphasis on art-style and direction. You do a lot of deep dives into art-style and how they help with the narrative of whatever media you're covering, I kinda make that connection to your channel.
So yeah, I think taking a chance to go into just darker themes for games through the points you like to point out and draw attention too fits in perfectly. Can't wait to see what's in store for the next one.

I adore hearing others talk about Oswald, as he’s easily my favorite Disney character and he doesn’t get the light he deserves most of the time. And just a small little thing to add about the clock tower theme, I absolutely adore that track, as the calliope and melody of its a small world as happy as they normally sound in the actual attraction serve the horror so easily.

Sometimes, with all of the corporatism surrounding Disney and a lot of their… less ethical decisions (cough filming the Mulan remake in a location with internment camps cough), it’s hard to remember that even though the executives might not care about anything other than the dollar sign (that and their approval on social media), most of the people behind the work itself truly put their heart into it. Rewatching stuff like older Pixar films and realizing how mature many of the themes were, watching flicks like Fantasia and just staring at how incredible the animation is, as well as stuff like looking at this game’s lore (which is surprisingly dark, even for the tone this game already has) and concept art for it not only takes me back, but lets me bring that to the present with a new appreciation for it. The world isn’t all doom and gloom, and this game actually reminds me of that, and I respect it for that.

I think taking the time even as a horror-focus channel to shed light on smaller, darker but not horrific titles would be a nice addition to your channel's lineup of content. I like ooky spooky flesh-rending nightmare games now and then, but a subtle approach to terror and the darkness can be just as interesting and fun to watch, especially if you make more videos like this about otherwise cheerful brands going a bit darker and acting grim for a change of pace even if it's not "on brand" for them.

When I first heard of this game announcement as a kid I was instantly pulled in. I Loved the dark twist on Disney, turning old characters and new ones into horrid monstrosities or creepy dark versions. Watched the intro cutscene dozens of times and printed out artwork to tape up in my room. While I wish the game was closer to the concept art of dark dead cities, lands evaporated by an ocean of thinner leaving DBC left isolated on a pillar of rock, and creepyier Cronenberg robots, I love the final result. The blot is also one of my favorite game villains personally and would love to see him represented more in Disney media. I got it as an early birthday gift from my mom and played it immediately; Got stuck sometimes but I did beat it. Forever it remains a staple of who I am and kinda kickstarted my admiration of mascot horror. Over the years I think back on it and would replay it a few years ago to 100% by getting all pins and such. Now we're getting a remake and I'm thrilled beyond belief. I'm definitely gonna replay it soon before the Remake comes out to remember fully how it looks; Sorta prepare myself I guess. I also haven't played in years and it was due for a replay soon anyhow.
It also ticks me off when reviewers slam the game for wasted potential or poorly executed, so I'm glad someone I like made a great defense piece for it.

When I was a kid, my dad bought this game for me as well as the walkthrough guide to go with it. I never played any signifigant part of the game's story myself (I was afraid of the blotlings and thus mostly just ran around the hub world, so it was mostly my dad who played it), but I had this weird obsession with the guidebook, reading it over and over again. It was like I was playing the game vicariously through it. Even though I was scared to play it, I wanted to know what happened and to see more of it.
It's one of my dad's favorite games ever, and remains one of my very favorite pieces of disney media purely for the art style and darker tone alone.

Though honestly it seems very fitting for this game to take more of a backseat. Being about old and obscure Disney characters, it’s almost on brand for it to be a cult classic and not something on the forefront.

Well I, along with several others, didn't expect Epic Mickey to be one of the games you would cover, but I'm glad you did! This game was one of the most influential pieces of media for my child self when it came to the dark/horror aesthetic, as well as solidifying my love for old-fashioned rubberhose cartoons. It's just such a shame that we might never see anything like this from Disney ever again thanks to their desire to maintain their "family-friendly" image, even though there are kids that love macabre stuff just as much as teens and adults do (take me as an example, I was 9 years old when the game came out and I was OBSESSED).

  • @maskedshadow6853

This game is so freaking underrated for no go reason and I'm so happy you made this review. It's so detailed in every way and my personal fav amongst them is the little blotches the come off Mickey. Depending on the path you choose you'll either have more come off you (thinner) or less (paint). On that note it also somewhat hints at the ending you get Which brings me to my next favorite thing
    *SPOILERS AHEAD*
The ending changes slightly when you take the thinner path after Oswald and Mickey meet through the mirror. Little blotches will come off Mickey implying the blot is still apart of Mickey/possibly possessing him (for some reason this is never mentioned in the sequel even if you do the thinner path again and it pisses me off) however this ending like the rest of this game was going to be much darker. Originally Mickey would basically turn into a monster and run lose to cause havoc in the wasteland. This version of him was called Scrapper Mickey and he has two designs as far as I know, one is basically mickey but black/dark purple with bright green eyes and mouth like the blotlings, the second he's much more disheveled with sharp teeth and claws. his original colors are there but some parts are melting and missing and in place those missing spots are sketches. You can look scrapper Mickey on Google and find the art, its really cool :). Sorry about my rambling I just really love this game.

Definitely not as obscure and definitely not as creepy, but it does have a similar vibe to Epic Mickey’s “cute and childish cartoon character(s) get put into a darker video game adaptation” idea. I definitely recommend that you look into it if you have the time (the Cinderella level especially terrified me as a child)!

The dark theme was kinda toned down in the sequel in my opinion and I missed it. I adore how. It actually showed how you changed the fates of a. Lot of different side characters if you did their side quests, a nice touch that gives your decisions more weight and gives the game replaibility. I don’t have my wii nor the game anymore sadly, but It’ll always hold a very special place in my heart. Glad to see you gave this game justice, if anybody could it would be you! I remember not wanting to play the game as a child because the ink monster gave me nightmares

I loved this game so much as a kid and made Oswald my favorite Disney character of all time. (I also get a kick that part of the agreement to get Oswald they traded a sports broadcaster).
Fun fact, the Sorcerer has a name, Yen Sid. Which is just Disney backwards lol

This game means a lot to me. From watching my Uncle play it on his wii, to playing by his side as Oswald for the sequel on the same wii. Sometimes, I find myself whistling the game’s opening tune along with the mean street theme.

I grew up with the Nintendo Wii as well. Skylanders has always been my favorite games. Epic Mickey is my second "go to" game, all because the theme, the atmosphere, the music filled with depressing and bittersweet tones. Dark Beauty Castle and Lonesome Manor has and always will catch my interest as much as the characters. Speaking of characters, I've never knew or thought about the Gremlins of how they could've gotten their own movie.
