Just so yall know, the part 2 to my Sonic CD video is going to be coming at some point soon, but in the meantime I plan on working on some shorter videos to make up the time it takes to get that out! Hope that clears things up if there's any confusion about a future upload on here that isn't related to Sonic CD even though I announced part 2.
You have to check out Malediction chapter 1. Its not an actual game, but rather an interactive experience on TH-cam. I honestly forgot that though. It feels like a game and it’s honestly an underrated gem. It hurts me to see it’s not getting much attention!
Like 2 minutes in, loving the intro currently. I hate when people get the idea that because something is your favourite it must mean you think it's the best. Thank you so much for making it clear that is not the case.
@@Pokemanmon Yeah, it's like how everyone hates Professor Umbridge (harry potter), but the reason everyone hates her is because she's incredibly well written (and acted) to be as hateable as possible. Getting a fictional character to be so universally hated by anyone who watches even a couple of out of context clips from the films is incredibly impressive.
I honestly love how Pastra's videos are always so positive and upbeat The default for youtube seems to be "nobody will watch if you're not super critical of everything" so it's a breath of fresh air seeing someone this positive while still going very in-depth with their content
@@oliverafton1444 I mean fair, though I grew up in the era of AVGN, Nostalgia Critic and I Hate Everything So my perception may be a little skewed as to what gets popular on this site
I love Pastra for the same reasons I love Clint's Reptiles and The Slingshot Channel. There is just a level of pure genuine child-like excitement and passion all of them has that is absolutely adorable. It doesn't matter if I care about what they're talking about, it doesn't matter if I agree with what they are saying, it's just so much fun listening to them nerd out about the things they love.
18:17 "It feels like Metal is supposed to represent what Sonic could be in Robotnik's eyes." I have never thought about Metal Sonic that way but gotdamn if I'm not thinking about it now.
I think that would make an excellent plot for the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 movie. Also a neat twist for Metal Sonic to show up *after* Shadow in that continuity. Perhaps after Sonic either defeats Shadow, converts him to the good side, or Shadow sacrifices himself, Eggman is inspired to make a truly superior version of Sonic that he will have complete control over.
Also, little easter egg: In Wacky Workbench, you have a special room only accessible in specific time periods. When you see it in the past, you see a statue, presumably the one of an angel if we judge by the wings. The room seems to be made with bricks, clashing entirely with the metallic floor that made the place with. This room is a room that seems to be untouched by the time. This statue gives you rings. Cool. In other time periods, the room seems to be walled in since you cannot have access to it. In the Bad Future however, you can access it again, and apparently... Dr. Robotnik had his hands on it. The statue had been replaced with a statue of the doctor, not giving you any rings. The room itself is made with metal instead, and when you break the Robotnik statue out of spite... you get a trap that attacks you. This further reinforces the need for you to actually save the world and get the good ending, just in the hope that this statue doesn't get defiled again.
Wait so could there have been an ancient civilization on little planet before hence the angelic statue and the Roman/Greek styled stardust speedway in the past?
MASSIVE shoutout to my friend Lyrahorrorz for putting together the intro for this video. She did it for me completely on a whim and that means the WORLD to me! If you're able to, please check out her stuff on twitter! twitter.com/LyraHorrorz
The discussion of horror games is definitly what drew me to this channel, but if im being honest, i just absolutely love Pastra's content. It feels like chatting with a friend about the new game they found and why they love it so much- and god, i love listening to people talk about things they're passionate about.
That "Sonic, dead or alive" clip, holy crap, it's good, and while in metallic madness where it's used feels more like Robotnik's words, with how Metal was used in Heroes, yeah, it definitely feels like the words of Metal.
One little thing that I wanted to add to the Metal Sonic fight is Robotnik's role in it and what it represents. it has two sides: Robotnik's confidence in Metal and his lack of care over his creations. Robotnik chases you and Metal with an unavoidable insta-kill laser. The fact that he decides to do it means that he either is so confident in Metal winning the race that he'll be able to finally end Sonic with no chance of escaping. Or... Robotnik does not care if Metal loses. In his mind, it's just another machine that he created to stop Sonic, most likely expecting it to fail him, just like every other one in the past. He is not afraid to destroy Metal in the laser if he loses to Sonic, which shows how little this supposedly perfect rival mattered to him.
At least in the comics he cares about him. "He wouldn't know a work of art if it punched him in the face ! You did punch him in the face, right ?" "👍" "Attaboy."
That last interpretation That’ll make Metal rebelling in Heroes make a whole lot more sense. As if he’s getting retribution for not just himself, but for the other badniks that got destroyed because Eggman/Robotnik just did not bother.
I always thought Metal Sonic was the perfect rival, he has no goal beside the utter destruction of his rival, he can’t be reasoned with, and he’s on several occasions betrayed his own creator because he figured he was too incompetent to kill Sonic, and no matter how many times he loses he always comes back.
I love Sonic CD for its sense of exploration and discovery, not only in-game, but the secrets which can be found in the sound test menu, the secret special stage, the fact that the second level, a zone supposedly being a mirrored version of marble zone scrapped very early in development, the influences of many great songs in, and the tone of, the soundtrack, it all blends together to make one of the most interesting and intriguing experiences that Sonic has to offer. And, as it was designed to be the successor to the first sonic game, and linking to the theme of duality, all of the stages in Sonic CD are essentially mirrored versions of the stages in Sonic 1, Palmtree Panic resembling Green Hill, Metallic Madness being similar to Scrap Brain, among others. One of my favorite games in the series despite all of the flaws it has, mainly in terms of level design due to most of the team working on it focussing on the more artistic, conceptual and environmental aspects. oh and metal sonic is truly awesome and i love him so much
I think I read once that Sonic CD was originally an upgraded port of Sonic 1. That would explain R2 (the scraped zone) looking like Marble zone. We also know that Tidal Tempest was added later in development, since it’s the only zone that doesn’t show up in the ending cutscene.
Slightly off topic, but I love how at the end of the video we jump to what feels like two sides of one coin. On one hand, Pastro the creator wants to make content based on things he enjoys that others may find interest in, even if it's not the norm. On the other, you have a side that wants to try and cater to the majority crowd that wants one particular thing outta you which is the most popular subject. And if anyone's managed to miss that part, which many probably have, they wouldn't know
Actually, I didn't subscribe for horror, not necessarily at least. I subscribed because Pastra can make a video discussing any game, no matter how niche, and it will still be incredibly entertaining. All because you can feel his passion for these games when he talks about them. Hell, Pastra could make a video about why Flappy Bird is the pinnacle of gaming and I'd eat that shit up no questions asked. My first encounter with this channel was the Bendy and The Ink Machine video. I've been in the fandom when it was fresh, and while I liked the game, I never thought it could be someone's literal favorite of the genre. The game has, at this point, been criticized so much for its flaws and shortcomings, bugs, and creator drama, that I thought every connoisseur of the genre wouldn't even find it scary, and would rate it as a mediocre to an okay game at best. But the way Pastra was so unapologetically passionate about it, how he highlighted every detail he loved about the game, how enthusiastic he was to just talk about why the game brought him joy - it was such a delight to watch, and it made me realize that maybe some positivity is really needed in the sea of merciless criticism. That maybe it's okay to enjoy and love imperfect games. So, yeah. Suck it Lankmann, I didn't subscribe for horror. I subscribed for passion.
omfg i got heart'd i'm gonna. go over there to lie down for a bit. But since I got noticed. If I may suggest. Are you planning on making a video on any of the SCP games? They do technically count as horror games
i mean flappy bird used to be the pinnacle of gaming and its downfall is kinda interesting ngl (i know that u prob meant to say that to show how this guy can make anything entertaining but i just wanted to say this cuz y not)
I love that Lankmann's basically become an annoying roommate that pesters Pastra to make videos on horror, it feels so in character for him, because we all know that he would be that petty
By far my favorite part about Metal Sonic is despite being the antithesis to the point where he seems like a lifeless slave, the games go out of their way to show that Metal is more than just a puppet of Eggman's. Even in CD, the first thing he does is give Sonic's iconic finger wave with his arms crossed, that combined with how he reacts to how Sonic is doing by using whichever ability with hurt or surpass our favorite Hedgehog in a more intelligent way unlike any other Eggman robot just shows how there is more than just another Badnik to beat. But keeping with the antithesis part of him, we realize that he just wants to beat Sonic, in any way possible. Unlike Sonic who usually is willing to give anyone a chance once they prove themselves worthy, Metal won't even give Sonic a breather if he could, and just wants to prove that he is the only Sonic there could be, caring not for anything else but beating the blue blur. This makes him one of the most capable, adaptive, and overall ruthless Eggman robots, despite the fact that he only listens to Eggman because he is his best bet to surpass the faker in his eyes. Add on the fact that he actively copies Sonic's shields in the form of shock and flame charge, with the themes of Sonic's freedom of choice and identity shown in most tracks versus a ruthless copy cat created only for one purpose, and we have one of the most well made Sonic robots in the series.
Something I, too, love about CD is Metal Sonic. Particularly, that even though everyone else has gone through several design changes- Metal hasn't. Sure his limbs might have gotten longer or his animations might be smoother, but his core design hasn't changed since CD. He's still this metallic antithesis of classic Sonic that stands in stark contrast to what Sonic is. The only change Metal's had was Neo Metal, and that felt more like a new form rather than a design change so I say Neo doesn't count.
“Horror is what the people are subscribing for” idk Lankman I subscribed for the way Pastra dissects games and why he loves them so much. Seriously, the way you understand how game mechanics, story, sound design and more come together to create these experiences is amazing. You could make a 20-minute video about Flappy Bird and still manage to make it interesting.
"I'd like to take a moment before ending this discussion to talk about my personal favorite sonic character, Amy Rose. Amy's been my favorite character for as long as I can remember, and its not for some crazy in-depth reason like why I lovr Metal Sonic. She's just an adorable wholesome character who makes me happy every single time I see her." Quote important to me
I actually REALLY like the Archie comic origin for her - a significantly younger fan of sonic who wasted a minor magical relic wishing herself into sonic's age. It's a fun Weird Sonic Lore tidbit to throw at people, yeah, but it incidentally helps explain both sonic's personal dislike for her (she made him go on a last-minute hunt to fix an important problem) and her pure, earnest personality (she still skipped years of introspection)
Pastra, this game has a special place in my heart, and after watching your video, I can safely say you are the wisest and most wholesome sleep paralysis demon I've ever met. I agree with your analysis at almost every turn, including the perfect villain we've found in Metal Sonic and the crushing oppression of the 'bad' futures. It's a masterpiece, even if not a perfect one, and I was delighted to hear your thoughts on this beloved artifact of my childhood.
Hi! I doubt you'll see this but my best friend actually just showed me your channel, starting by this video. I really like your style of writing as well as your view towards this game. Your video reminded me of why i fell in love with this franchise as well as reawakened memories of how fun i found the game when i first played it. Even though when i first played it, i didn't understand the game that well, i could tell the heart and effort that was put into this game, like with this video Thank you for sharing your point of view with this video, i genuinely loved it
This video perfectly explains why Sonic CD is my favorite as well, except I would have brought up three extra points: 1. You can obtain the time stones to get the good ending as well by collecting 50 rings and bringing them to the end of the stage, like Sonic 1. This gives the player another way to play, while still emphasizing exploration just as much, turning the game into a collectathon type deal. It was perfectly handled in my opinion. Also the special stages in CD are incredibly fun with a high skill ceiling. 2. The idea of the good future is not just amazing for story. It’s also genius for gameplay. If you choose the generator route for the good ending, you can see and reflect on the good you’ve done for that zone and it makes you feel great. If you choose the time stone route, you can go to the good future on every stage to play an easier version of the level, acting as a gameplay reward for the player’s hard work. 3. Even though this is specific to the 2011 port, I enjoy the time trials in CD more than any other Sonic game. As you already know, the levels have much more verticality and variety to them, making speedrunning more of a hassle, in a good way. Figuring out the fastest possible route through a stage and discovering little tricks and skips here and there are a blast through these types of levels. Shameless plug: you can check out some of my time trials on my channel if you’d like :)
Metal sonic has to be one of my favorite sonic characters, and his introduction is awesome, and all the old sonic games with no voice acting do such a good job at establishing characters/personalities
It's so weird seeing a content creator on this hell scape of a platform pump out a banger one after another. You're probably one of the best up-and-coming creators on this platform. The editing and the commentary are just perfect. I've enjoyed every single one of your vids. Amazing work.
I love this game as well as Sonic Heroes. Thanks for sharing this video to everyone. I agree with your statement. The graphics and gameplay are amazing.
This review is so good. This pretty much why I love Sonic CD as well. The fact that they focused heavily on exploration and visual storytelling with bad/good futures makes it instantly captivating. The moment you enter the bad version of Palmtree panic you can tell something went horribly wrong and you want to save the planet from becoming dystopian. That combined with the music instantly made me a fan and always want to keep playing. It's honestly really amazing how much they could convey in a game with no voice acting. Plus they introduced Time Attack in this game and you could go basically speedrun levels you enjoyed. It was definitely ambitious by breaking from the formula Sonic was known for, but it introduced many cool concepts that keep the Sonic game experience unique.
I like Pastra making an effort to put different types of games his channel, even though his horror videos are great. Btw that 16 bit intro looks so cool.
It was released on a suckfish console then got re-released after almost 30 years on pc and other consoles. What did you expect? It's time to shine or to get more fans has long passed due to super majority of fans who are fans of the classic sonic games are fans due to nostalgia, due to them already playing genesis ones for a long amount of time.
i liked this. just releasing the fact that you aren't just a horror junkie but also go for other game types. and since you asked, just like a lot of people, Sonic Mania stands as my favorite. mainly because metal sonic showed up but it's still fun
THE GENESIS RECREATION OF YOUR INTRO MASHED W METALLIC MADNESS GOES HARD Another thing I find interesting about that theme of duality, the animated "Sonic OVA" that came out about three years after had a similar-ish theme. It featured metal sonic, of course, but the overall theme seemed less about duality and more about similarity. This is even highlighted in the ending theme, "Look-alike", where the whole song is about things that aren't exactly the same but deep down are the same, "steak and cow" "ice and water". Just found it interesting, I think someone posted the full thing on yt. Check it out if you haven't. Edit: I uh, hadn't watched it to the point where you used footage from it. Sorry.
I agree with Metal as Sonic’s rival. It perfectly encapsulates the saying “you are your greatest enemy” and forces you/Sonic to surpass your own limits (story-wise anyway).
I would say he (it?) at least has the potential to be justnas great a rival in a gameplay sense. The whole point of the games is to get you to be able to play them faster and better, so a boss who forces exactly that skill development fits perfectly
Finally, another person that can admit that their favorite game has flaws and that there are better games out there No seriously, way too many people get way too defensive when I say that I like Sonic Colors over Adventure 2.
It's like that with movies as well. If I say I loved How To Train Your Dragon 3, people come at me ranting about it's flaws. Yeah it has flaws, obviously. But I love it for what it is. It is a solid movie.
@@liutoturtle5195 the gameplay is not very fun and the story is massively overrated i shouldn’t have said it like that, this is mostly an opinion thing
I love how Lankmann has gone from being genuinely threatening to having a temper tantrum- "I'll just keep pestering you till you do!" not even channel deletion just the classic "Do this and I'll shut up for the rest of the week I promise 🥺"
I’m so glad Pastra has as much love for Metal Sonic as I do. The fact Metal always gets overlooked as a rival in Sonic nowadays is a blatant crime for how awesome he is.
Ye he wnet from "OH SH*T HE TOOK THAT GIRL" or "WAIT, THIS IS A RACE" to "oh look metal sonic again, time for stardust speedway to play and the same boss from generations" witch is sad for such a cool character
The impact of the classic Sonic games is still felt to this day, hopefully in a good way for most. I think it's awesome to see my favorite creators in gaming appreciate Sonic for some of the influences it's had on the game industry. Also yes, Pastra, Sonic 3&K is the DEFINITIVE Sonic experience.
I REALLY agree with what you said about Metal Sonic, and also about him being the best rival for Sonic. While Knuckles and Shadow might've started as rivals to Sonic, in later games, or even within their introductory game, they eventually grow to be their own characters independent from Sonic (and in Shadow's case he actually works way better that way imo). While Sonic has butt heads with Knuckles and Shadow before, Metal is the only one who actually feels like he opposes him in every way while being at the same level. I might not have the same appreciation for CD that you do; but, you did talk about some cool thoughts on it and might've helped me enjoy it just a little more.
Sonic CD has always been up there for my favorite sonic games, Junio sonic's design in this is something I still absolutely love. The time travel gimmicks are my favorite part aside from the soundtracks.
I really wanna see you talk about other sonic games after this one, especially the ones that are talked about with mixed opinions or are just not as mainstream. I always like seeing people talk about things that most tend to brush off.
One game I enjoy very much that, seeing as you like exploration based platformers, as well as horror media and retro games, think you would like. Super Metroid for the SNES has many similarities to Sonic CD; Non-verbal storytelling, through level design and soundtrack, are heavily used to tell Super's story, instead of utilizing long, expositinal cutscenes aside from the cold opening. Horror elements are present as well, with grotesque boss fights and chilling, abandoned biomes with incredible atmosphere that the player must traverse. All in all, I think that this game would be a nice subject for a video in the future. Keep up the great content!
@@Pastraspec Hey Pastra, I just realized Clyde's Primary Color, orange, Is also the color of Clyde, One of the ghosts from Pac-man. Fun little thing I found out by searching on google.
@@Pastraspec If you're going to do Super Metroid some day, you absolutely have to follow it up with Metroid Fusion and Dread. Fusion has some of the physical horror of Super and a lot of psychological horror to it, which the latter is followed up to in Dread. Seriously, a game title has never been more accurate to me than any other.
So a few months ago I wanted to find out why I loved Sonic CD so much after playing it. I've played and finished almost every Sonic game (excluding heroes and forces) but something about Sonic CD had me enthralled. That's when I sae this comment. I thought to myself "Maybe I just like exploration platformers? I don't know. Maybe I *should* check out the Metroid series." So I did and yeah.....Metroid is like one of my favorite series now. Thank you for indirectly making me a fan of the Metroid series. I love it!
I genuinely want to love this game as a whole for what it does and symbolizes, there's two details that really kill it for me. First is how I rarely felt in control. Maybe it's an issue with the mobile version, but there were plenty of times where it felt like something was bound to happen or was happening that I had no part in. For example, one of those sparks from a bomb enemy hit me out of nowhere and it felt very unfair since it was blocked by parts of the level. Another much more common example is getting thrown around either endlessly or into a hazard. It was happening so much to me that I even gave it a nickname, "Getting Collision Chaos'd" to reflect my first experience with it. What made it even worse was how I felt obligated to collect all the time stones since some of generators were placed in some bizarre spots. Now I was not only scavenging for rings, but also having to put up with lost control getting Sonic hurt and seemingly random pot shots. The other grievance I have with the game is the time travel gimmick. More specifically how some zones had to shoehorn in a two spring corridor to make it possible to time travel in the first place. You have to keep up a pace for ages, and any less could completely erase your chance. There was a very simple solution that would have saved it for me: just require you to pass the sign at a high speed. This would also prevent occasional softlocks and pot shots since the level designers didn't properly account for the teleporting.
Funfact: the christian whitehead remakes actually lenghtened the time it takes to time travel for balancing but theres a mod that restores the (better) original time travel P.S. to fix your camera issue you can turn on the original spindash that makes the camera pan in the direction you're going like it did on the sega cd
9:38 This is what I needed to hear. You're probably the only Sonic CD reviewer, from what I can remember, to ever mention a strong feeling such as this. I feel the exact same way or the right way to play my favorite video game ever. Instant like.
Sonic cd and adventure both have a special place in my heart because of the exploration aspect. I hope we get another game with lots of places to wander around
Something cool about the duality in Sonic CD is that it reflects outside of the game itself, with Sonic CD being the japonese interpretation of a sequel to Sonic 1, and Sonic 2 being the american interpretation, even with their own versions of a mechanic Sonic
Amazing video!! One part I love about Cd is the visuals, so colourful and full of detail. It makes it very fun to explore the zones and find new mechanics and fun play styles
Also, Metal Sonic is my favourite character of the Sonic series, and I really liked how you explained how, by his very existence, he confronts everything Sonic stands for.
Imma be real i just love the content! Horror or not ypur work is pog! Lanks just being a shellhead. But off the topic of zigzag fingers for a second, I FUCKIN LOVE THIS VIDEO! the custom pfp, banner, intro, and how deep you got into this all was amazing!
It's honestly great imagining Pastra, as their icon, both freaking out at playing horror games and squeeee-ing over Amy Rose. That twisting, lanky, spikey form would probably have some great animated reactions.
So glad that you talked about Sonic CD! My favorite things that came out of this game were the amazing intro song, Sonic OVA, Metal and Amy. It's kind of a crime not as many people like it as much as the other Classic games
All forms of Clyde are wonderful! I love your new PFP and the intro Clyde from today? 1000/10! Like I said last time, I love seeing your channel grow and seeing you branch out into new genres and games to talk about with your own distinct style. Even when you disagree with something done, you keep things positive overall and that is hella refreshing. I'm Gamer adjacent. I don't play but I know enough to hold my own so I'm familiar with Sonic so hearing about your times with him already has me riveted. Thanks for everything. Have a good one! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜👩🏾🎤
you can also hear in the palmtree panic bad future (jp ver) some HINTS of what couldve been saved, such as the glitching “yay” and the glitching palmtree panic present them though its faint
I just found this video and I love it! Sonic CD is a pretty good game but I never thought it was cool until seeing this video. I got a new appreciation for the game. When you said that "you liked games that emphasize exploration" I cannot think of a game more important to explore than Tunic. A cute exterior with something clearly darker on the inside. The game also requires you to think about what the story is because most of the language is written in some foreign language. Also you have to search for the game control manual in pages. For every nook and cranny you search it rewards you.
Metal Sonic scared me as a kid The game version was scary enough but when the movie came out it terrified me, seeing him in a what I thought was HD Metal Sonic in the animated Sonic movie is both terrifying and unreal in a way
I know you hear this quiet often but I love the way you explain things! It's both really engaging but also really easy to understand! You also have a really optimistic view of the media which always makes me smile. Plus I love seeing the orange fella on my screen. Keep doing what you're doing fettuccine man!!
i love that your branching out to normal content and hearing your thoughts on certain games and how they portraty themselves through music themes and the feelings they invoke
Honestly based on how you described the emotional urge to complete the good ending over the bad one, Sonic CD seems like the perfect Sonic game to try to find horror in I mean Metal Sonic is literally attempting to crush a cute little animals skull with his foot
I love this video. Its just a guy talking about his favourite Sonic game and I love that. Keep doing what you're doing, its great. :) The thumbnail art is lovely to look at as always.
I wasn't at all expecting you to talk about sonic cd, but I loved it! I had an incredible time watching, despite the fact that it's not a horror game. I just want you to know that I don't really care if you don't always post stuff about horror games, because when I see you talk about something you are so passionate about I become speechless! Amazing video, please continue your great work :)
With the teasers for the video I thought you were just going talk about Metal Sonic. The first time I played CD it was a few years ago and I couldn't get past Collision Chaos, I was also playing it with a TV remote. Also, that pixel intro was absolutely sick.
I wish you made a comparison between the Japanese and US Metal sonic themes. In my opinion the Japan one sounds like an energetic challenge against a new rival, where sonic can really put his speed to the test. In the US, however, (my preferred choice) it tells a story of a desperate struggle against a foe that meets, and almost surpasses Sonic’s abilities, in a race where sonic is pushed to his limit.
Wow it feels so good that someone is talking about this so underrated game, it may not be my favorite but for sure it has always been one of my favorites, Metal Sonic is probably my favorite antagonist of the whole franchise, and I love Amy ! I'm so happy to see you make a video about this game, and I'm so excited to see Part 2, especially since honestly, I think all Sonic fans already know what it's going to be about ;)
This is a REALLY good video holy shit, recently i finally beated Sonic CD and got the good ending and it's genuinely such a good game, so seeing this video was quite fitting lol PLEASE make other videos like this-
You hit the nail on the head with this video. I think the more psychedelic and visually distinct nature of Sonic CD compliments the exploration-based gameplay very well. It makes me want to immerse myself in the world of Little Planet and simply the atmosphere of the good future areas makes achieving them feel satisfying.
I love how passionate you are into your content, the art style you have is really good and fitting for the kind of content you make, your commentary sounds like you really are invested into the topic, that mixed with your kind sounding voice makes up a lot for the possitive vibe you want to aim on your videos, keep it up!
I totally agree with everything you said! Sonic CD is my favorite Sonic game as well! I really love the game so much. I love both Sonic CD soundtracks. Speaking of trying to get the good future just to not get the bad future,I try and break the generators, while also getting the time stones. I really love the way this game is made, and it is deffinetly my favorite Sonic game of all time! Another amazing video! Keep up the good work 🌟Pastra🌟!!! You are a 🌟⭐LEGEND⭐🌟!!!!
Sonic CD is a kind part of my childhood. The US music for Palmtree Panic always makes me feel at ease. To remember a simpler time... always wondering why i was such a problem child.... anyway, great video. :) hope you have a good day, everyone.
You're gettin' professional, really cool to see how the system's been growing and tweaking. All the new animations and avatar cutouts, while the Lankmann stuff's always sat neutral with me I'm glad to have been here to see that number soarin' to 200k, and here's to 200 more. Plus it's about time someone's been vocal about Metal, that guy deserves his spotlight.
I really love that you completely changed your intro to a pixelated animation. TH-camrs that do those little details are the ones that become my favorites.
Out of all people Pastra wasn’t someone I thought would talk about Sonic. But I’m kinda glad, good to see that not even my favorite horror content creators can escape the Blue Blur. Jokes aside, I love the way you explain the multiple aspects of CD. Some of the stuff you talk about I never really thought about, even though it’s not one of my favorites I love this game’s sense of storytelling. Despite most not giving this game even a glance I’m glad you have Pastra.
Great video Pastra. I've never really understood what makes this game click so much with me despite it objectively having so many flaws. This video puts into perspective so many of the reasons I like this game. The metal sonic segment similarly made me realize why I like the design of the character so much as well. My only disagreeance is on the soundtrack. When it comes to the atmosphere of the game I think both soundtracks end up flawed in different situations. Notably the american soundtrack has never really had a good future payoff in my opinion. A great example ironically is metallic madness where I feel like the good future is quite underwhelming compared to the Japanese one which actually feels like you've recovered the zone by taking what made the zone unique it's orchestral hit melody and making it bright and cheery. By doing this instead of making it seem like the hope of the zone has beaten the darkness, it more feels like the technology of the zone has now been used for good and the zone keeps its personality but no longer for evil. Of course the Japanese soundtrack isn't perfect (even though it is my preferred one). I think the Japanese soundtracks bad futures are the most underwhelming tracks. For example stardust speedway bad future is super overrated, well it's a good boss fight song it doesn't really fit the atmosphere of a bad future. The past is nice and chill, the present is super groovy, and the good future is uplifting. All of this fits the progression of this metropolis as it evolves over time, so for the bad future it would be fitting to have something that feels desolate like you're walking through a rundown area in a city. So in my opinion the strengths of the Japanese soundtrack are the present in good future will the American soundtrack does a better job with the bad futures. Anyway long music rant aside really amazing video! I'm excited for the sequel to this video because I feel like the abstract nature of this game could actually come with a lot of interesting horrifying elements.
Still hoping for that part 2. I played this first when i was really little and found the bad future endings to be scary and the soundtrack only added to that feeling. Robotnik's boss theme actually gave me nightmares. I wanna see if others had a similar experience if they played this at a young age.
Metallic Madness US Present/Bad Future are my favourite final level themes in a Sonic game, and it's cool to find someone who shares that, often I just see people throw all their attention toward the JP soundtrack and reject US as too "strange" or "bad" or "unfitting for a sonic game".
In my opinion, Metallic Madness Present US is the best Final level theme! It has a very serious tone, yet gives positive indicators. This, combined with the unique instrumentation sets an undescribably great atmosphere for the whole level.
For me, the Good Future of Metallic Madness in the American Soundtrack was the best way to end off the Good Futures. It's optimistic, yet is aware of the dangers that still lurk in this Good Future while having a sense of finality in it. I love the silent, calming approach to this track, and it's a definite contender for my favorite final level theme in any Sonic game next to Metallic Madness Present JPN and Eggmanland Day/Night.
Okay so, my favorite Sonic game is a highly controversial one. But here goes. Sonic Forces is absolutely amazing. 1, the soundtracks are fantastic and perfectly... Sonic. And... yeah thats about it for the actual game. I love Forces for what it *could have* been. There are so many stories and fan theories out there about Forces, and even complete re writes while containing the same ideas. Ive even worked on a few myself! Forces brought a side to Mobius that we've never seen before really, and I LOVE it for that. The military esque Resistance combined with the hilariously edgy yet impossibly powerful Infinite just make for an amazing tale, when told correctly. Unfortunately Forces missed the mark in the real world, but behind the scenes and in my heart, it is a masterpeice. Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk.
Yea I get it,l like forces too mostly because it's my first sonic game, hope people understand Edit:Well I found that people think forces is good, mostly because of sonic omens
I originally subbed cause of the fnaf analyses and I loved your style of video, but dang it I love all your videos that you’ve put out since then. It feels like listening to a friend ramble about their favorite thing they’ve discovered that week, and that makes me enjoy any creator way more than just judging them based on the content they’re focusing on :D you could literally make a video about club penguin (something I never played as a kid) and I’d STILL watch it and love it lol, keep doing what you’re doing dude, you’re doing a great job :D
wait pastra made this video wow i didn't expect him to be into sonic. That bit about the horror genre i'd actually argue that cd is kinda the scariest in the series because of the atmosphere of the bad future and it's easter eggs. also that american boss music..
I will say one of the things I find very interesting with the two soundtracks is how it makes that one easter egg feel creepy for the US version of it, or just goofy for the Japanese one
hearing your praise of the movement ability added in this game and the level design makes me want to bring the sonic fan game called "Sonic and The Fallen Star" to your attention. Sonic and The Fallen Star took the level design from sonic CD and bumped up the atmospheric and exploration-encouragement to the max, it also has the drop-dash from sonic mania along with the peelout from sonic CD, further adding to sonic's moveset and reducing the restrictions of the level design, and speaking of sonic mania, it has a similar art and animation style to sonic mania, further projecting sonic's personality along with dialogue-less cutscenes, simply using the characters' expressions (you can also choose to play tails in this fan game) for story telling
I know this video is 2 years old as of writing this, but since you like Sonic CD, my I recommend watching the “Metal Sonic is a Robotized Sonic” fan Theory videos? (Context: Robotization is a thing done in the SatAM Sonic cartoon and Archie comics, where Eggman/Robotnik uses a device to change organic material into robotics at the molecular level.)

It feels like chatting with a friend about the new game they found and why they love it so much- and god, i love listening to people talk about things they're passionate about.
That "Sonic, dead or alive" clip, holy crap, it's good, and while in metallic madness where it's used feels more like Robotnik's words, with how Metal was used in Heroes, yeah, it definitely feels like the words of Metal.
One little thing that I wanted to add to the Metal Sonic fight is Robotnik's role in it and what it represents.
it has two sides:
Robotnik's confidence in Metal and his lack of care over his creations.
@@blastfurnace8644 that's one of my favorite scenes
I say that the first option is better writing , so I say thats the case .
that latter interpretation makes sonic heroes very interesting with thoughts of it in mind.
That last interpretation
That’ll make Metal rebelling in Heroes make a whole lot more sense.
“He always comes back”
Insert Dave Miller joke here.
I love Sonic CD so much, its got good levels, soundtrack (both JP and US) and it introduced Metal Sonic and Amy.

Amy's been my favorite character for as long as I can remember, and its not for some crazy in-depth reason like why I lovr Metal Sonic. She's just an adorable wholesome character who makes me happy every single time I see her."
Quote important to me
I actually REALLY like the Archie comic origin for her - a significantly younger fan of sonic who wasted a minor magical relic wishing herself into sonic's age.

Even though when i first played it, i didn't understand the game that well, i could tell the heart and effort that was put into this game, like with this video
Thank you for sharing your point of view with this video, i genuinely loved it
Thats a lovely comment, I hope Pastra sees this. :)
This video perfectly explains why Sonic CD is my favorite as well, except I would have brought up three extra points:

Another thing I find interesting about that theme of duality, the animated "Sonic OVA" that came out about three years after had a similar-ish theme. It featured metal sonic, of course, but the overall theme seemed less about duality and more about similarity. This is even highlighted in the ending theme, "Look-alike", where the whole song is about things that aren't exactly the same but deep down are the same, "steak and cow" "ice and water". I agree with Metal as Sonic’s rival. It perfectly encapsulates the saying “you are your greatest enemy” and forces you/Sonic to surpass your own limits (story-wise anyway).
Imo Shadow is not the perfect rival for Sonic
I would say he (it?) at least has the potential to be justnas great a rival in a gameplay sense. The whole point of the games is to get you to be able to play them faster and better, so a boss who forces exactly that skill development fits perfectly
Finally, another person that can admit that their favorite game has flaws and that there are better games out there

One game I enjoy very much that, seeing as you like exploration based platformers, as well as horror media and retro games, think you would like. Super Metroid for the SNES has many similarities to Sonic CD;
Non-verbal storytelling, through level design and soundtrack, are heavily used to tell Super's story, instead of utilizing long, expositinal cutscenes aside from the cold opening.
Horror elements are present as well, with grotesque boss fights and chilling, abandoned biomes with incredible atmosphere that the player must traverse.
All in all, I think that this game would be a nice subject for a video in the future. Keep up the great content!
Super Metroid is one of my favorite games of all time! If people wanted to see that someday I would gladly cover it

Maybe I *should* check out the Metroid series."
So I did and yeah.....Metroid is like one of my favorite series now. Thank you for indirectly making me a fan of the Metroid series. I love it!
You know it's crazy how so many people that are like so passionate about Sonic or finally like talking about him and showing their passion now
I genuinely want to love this game as a whole for what it does and symbolizes, there's two details that really kill it for me.

There’s something brilliant about hearing my favourite TH-camr talk about my favourite series :)
Can’t wait for part 2!
Sonic cd and adventure both have a special place in my heart because of the exploration aspect. I hope we get another game with lots of places to wander around
Sonic frontiers
@@moolcazy3805 Frontiers doesn't exist yet, we don't know if it will actually give what was promised
@@FrostFire425 it sure did imo
Metal Sonic scared me as a kid
The game version was scary enough but when the movie came out it terrified me, seeing him in a what I thought was HD
Metal Sonic in the animated Sonic movie is both terrifying and unreal in a way
That Sonic themed intro animation was really good ngl
Also great video :)
I know you hear this quiet often but I love the way you explain things! It's both really engaging but also really easy to understand! You also have a really optimistic view of the media which always makes me smile. Plus I love seeing the orange fella on my screen. Keep doing what you're doing fettuccine man!!
13:25 that transition was GODLIKE
Actually like wtf thats sick
16:09 *This line goes hard as f*ck.*
i love that your branching out to normal content and hearing your thoughts on certain games and how they portraty themselves through music themes and the feelings they invoke
Honestly based on how you described the emotional urge to complete the good ending over the bad one, Sonic CD seems like the perfect Sonic game to try to find horror in
I mean Metal Sonic is literally attempting to crush a cute little animals skull with his foot
my god, I was waiting for that whole outro sequence for the Boss Music to show up lmaoo
Can't wait for part 2 :DDDD
I love the pixel art that was used for the intro and the music match it so well
15:31 now THAT was a super clever transition to talk about Metal Sonic.
Wow it feels so good that someone is talking about this so underrated game, it may not be my favorite but for sure it has always been one of my favorites, Metal Sonic is probably my favorite antagonist of the whole franchise, and I love Amy ! I'm so happy to see you make a video about this game, and I'm so excited to see Part 2, especially since honestly, I think all Sonic fans already know what it's going to be about ;)
This is a REALLY good video holy shit, recently i finally beated Sonic CD and got the good ending and it's genuinely such a good game, so seeing this video was quite fitting lol
PLEASE make other videos like this-
You hit the nail on the head with this video.
Honestly the horror themed non-horror games genre is one my favorites, so I'm loving the recent videos
Despite most not giving this game even a glance I’m glad you have Pastra.
i remember playing this game when i was a kid, it was my first sonic game and i remember absolutely loving Metal Sonic
Pastra covering a sonic game? That's a first!
Correct
@our hero Not Funny
Didn't Laugh.
Still hoping for that part 2. I played this first when i was really little and found the bad future endings to be scary and the soundtrack only added to that feeling. Robotnik's boss theme actually gave me nightmares.
I wanna see if others had a similar experience if they played this at a young age.
It’s nice to see people making content on this game, great job!!
I wonder if pastra's interest in talking about horror in a sonic game was in any way influenced by the comeback that sonic.exe had some time ago
I think i understand why you said your favorite sonic game is highly controversial.
If i saw someone bashing you, i will say, "opinions, remember?"
Have you checked out Chariii5's interpretation of Forces? Because apparently, it's really good and worth checking out.
Oh yeah i remember when sonic said "it's forcin' time" and forced all over everyone
Sonic Forces is truly the game of all time
Yea I get it,l like forces too mostly because it's my first sonic game, hope people understand
Edit:Well I found that people think forces is good, mostly because of sonic omens
@@ssg-eggunner" its forcin' time" is what I say each time I start the game, lol
I'm taking this as my daily reminder to jam out to Metallic Madness Bad Future.
Pastra becoming a general game reviewer, incredible
I will say one of the things I find very interesting with the two soundtracks is how it makes that one easter egg feel creepy for the US version of it, or just goofy for the Japanese one
hearing your praise of the movement ability added in this game and the level design makes me want to bring the sonic fan game called "Sonic and The Fallen Star" to your attention. Sonic and The Fallen Star took the level design from sonic CD and bumped up the atmospheric and exploration-encouragement to the max, it also has the drop-dash from sonic mania along with the peelout from sonic CD, further adding to sonic's moveset and reducing the restrictions of the level design, and speaking of sonic mania, it has a similar art and animation style to sonic mania, further projecting sonic's personality along with dialogue-less cutscenes, simply using the characters' expressions (you can also choose to play tails in this fan game) for story telling
love to hear about creepy aspects of this game, just know fun is infinite .
