    Surprised Steve didn't media blast fan and pulley.

      He's got fingers of steel for holding that fan while using an impact driver on the nut... he probably could have scratched that paint off with a fingernail!

    You make it look easy. Nice job. With a huge building full of cars, some on shelves, you could do one a week and not do the same car twice. Plus a tour of your restoration business would be really cool - equipment, past projects, philosophy on repairs vs restoration, cost etc. Hell, you could do several. We’d love every one.

    McMaster Carr have various steel coupling / u-joint sets to replace that plastic pedal box adjuster. One of these steel units, though not too expensive, will outlast anything plastic by many decades. Neat car!

      That is what I was thinking as well. Believe it or not the original coupling is still available from Marcos Heritage

    I remember the Marcos back in the sixties: they were built near me in Wiltshire and had a plywood chassis as one of the founders had worked on the DH Mosquito.

  • @chrisjohnson4165
    @chrisjohnson4165 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Jem Marsh, the man behind Marcos Cars (his partner was genius aircraft designer Frank Costin) , used to give great talks in the local pubs in Wiltshire, England. He was very bright and articulate. If anyone wants to know the most difficult part of a car to design - He said it was window winders! BTW, the main chassis members on this car are made from English oak, the rest of the chassis was plywood, like the Mosquito plane which Costin helped to design. The Mosquito was the most ourstanding plane of WWII.

      My silver Marcos has that construction but this one is a steel chassis.

    Think l've mentioned this before Steve but saw the pre- announcement brochures in 1962 . One of the founders stayed at our B&B ( Bed a d Breakfast ) house , and as a 9 year old l was fascinated by the futuristic design . The first cars were Volvo powered in 1800 and 3 litre form and had wooden chassis 's .

    There is always some job to do on classic cars but that is the fun I think. Lovely Marcos GT. A friend had a small one (don't recall the model) he fitted a Mini engine and the running gear and it went quite well he told me though I never got a ride in it! Thanks Steve, another one fixed, well almost. 👍👍

    • @ThisWeekWithCars
      @ThisWeekWithCars  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That would be the Mini Marcos

    • @curmudgeon1933
      @curmudgeon1933 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Probably a kit car using Mini running gear called the Mini Marcos, or also known as the Mini Jem. Named after Jem Marsh, one of the founders of Marcos Cars, along with Frank Costin, hence the name Marcos.

    Very useful video, I must have been VERY lucky when the alternator on my Marcos 3Ltr failed in France several years ago. The only garage that I could find did not speak any english and was a Citroen franchise but by pointing at the mounts he seemed to understand and came back with a very dusty box containing a Bosch alternator ith exactly the same fixtures👍

    A family friend had one that I got to drive when I was about 20yo. It must have been an earlier model as I think it had toggle switches not rocker switches on the dash. I was with a friend when we got a flat tire. Had to call the owner to figure out how to get the spare tire down.

    Wow . I never knew that Marcos cars use Veglia Borletti instruments. These are very common on Italian cars, because they are an Italian instrument company. I would have thought that Marcos being an English car company ,they would use Smiths instruments.

    Interesting to see the work on the alternator. Would NOT go that smoothly for me but i may have to buy an Escort III alternator for my Escort Mk2, it will have the wrong pulley.

    When I was a kid in the 70's I used to see these Marcos's everywhere. I always thought they were a really great looking car, I still do, but I can't remember the last time I saw one in the street, they seem to be very rare now, shame.

    Your issues seem to be a regulator issue more than the altrnator issues. Is the alternator internally or externally regulated? An external regulator would be easier to replace than an internal.

    • @ThisWeekWithCars
      @ThisWeekWithCars  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is internally regulated that is why I replaced the entire alternator.

      No they were left hand drive when sold outside the UK except for maybe the very early GTs. This red Marcos was imported from the UK after it was 25 years old.

    A rather under-rated vehicle. What a shame the company was destroyed by an unfortunate business deal. (IIRC, somebody ordered a batch of LHD models with automatic transissiions, then couldn't pay for them.)

    I remember a day out in my car - a TVR 3000 S convertable , about 1998.... when I met a similar car nut in one of these .... We swarmed all over each other's cars ... Then he said "do you want a straight swap - no money - just swap cars? !" I was REALLY tempted - but I knew my car - & turned the offer down - not wanting an unknown list of probs .... allways wondered since if I made the right decision ????

    Move the pedals instead of moving the seat ? That's like opening your garage door then your entire house moves backwards. I dunno, some people should not build cars.

    I think you’ll need an American customer! Shame how we lost so much of the British motor industry. Bristol, Jenson, Jowett, MG, Alvis, Armstrong Siddley, etc etc. We are hanging in with Aston Martin, Morgan, Lotus but lots of foreign ownership which is OK but sometimes seems less than what we had. And for good reasons even Morgan uses BMW engines now . And as you pointed out, your Marcos has a Ford engine. Just too expensive to build a one off for a small company
