I've personally always seen this movie as the end of the entire franchise, in a positive manner, Mario and Luigi leaving the mushroom kingdom, bowser(koopa) permanently defeated, but daisy being from the kingdom now knowing her place, can't go back with them, and stays behind.
Had to do that to my bro too...he had a bad break up and I get it..It's over...let's go. Bought him a pizza. I love my bro and we love pizza.
