That’s true. You’re probably right. Still, it could be that Mario wasn’t in on part of the scene. I heard the script changed a lot and the whole thing was Production Hell.
I like to think that everything after he whispered “what” was new to him. I’m referring to the elevator scene when Luigi started dancing with the goombas. It looked like he was genuinely confused by the idea but he had to go along with it. If not the verbal reaction, then the facial reaction seems pretty genuine. The whole idea is so bizarre. When he’s in the corner after shuffling past the goomba, he looks so mortified. He looks like he saw a ghost. I heard the scripts were changed incessantly and they were drunk on set too, so I bet he was a bit confused and his reactions were more real.

I guess you could say the reason I love this movie is because it was obviously made by a lot of people who didn’t understand what SMB was. As a result, they made sort of a dark fantasy or dystopian AU of Mario. I say that if you want a unique look at Mario, look no further than this movie.
If you want a memorable movie that does the main franchise justice, steer clear.
We'll see if the Illumination animated movie will do any better.

I can swear to almighty God that this particular scene has been lingering in my mind for a very very long time. I just did not know it was from this movie, even though I have heard about the name later. When I was young, this movie was kinda weird (oh of course it was) to me, and this scene haunted me. Now when suddently by chance I see it again, it was not that scary at all, just hilarious. Lol. It is true that your perspective change through time.

I saw the documentary. Apparently Leguizamo was drunk during half of the production because he hated the directors and project so much.

It's one of my favorite movies from my childhood. I just love how textured and odd it feels, especially with the design of the Goombas. There's just something about it that makes me happy.

This movie has such a great aesthetic. It’s gritty and dark, yet not self serious and clearly has fun with itself. A lot of people don’t like this because it’s radically different from its source material, but it’s important to view this as a reimagining of Mario, not a traditional adaptation. And as a reimagining, its very fun, very creative, and the production value is amazing. If this wasn’t associated with the franchise it’s based off of, this would definitely be received a lot more fondly. It kind of reminds me of Star Wars. Definitely doesn’t deserve the hate.
I always dug it. Still do. It was an incredibly bizarre move and I know that the entire cast despised it, but I appreciate that it did took such a major risk by doing something original with a very safe property.
I think it captures the essence of Mario well, its strange and surreal like most Mario games are.
I honestly really like their designs. They're so intimidating yet so cool looking. It may not resemble the source material, but it's a nice and unique take.

If this would've been called something else I have no doubt folks would've enjoyed this ALOT more back then. I remember enjoying it quite a bit when I rented it when it first came to VHS. Kinda like Halloween 3. If you go into it without thinking of Myers you'll find a pretty damn decent movie on its own.

I mean the Halloween series was always meant to go in different directions after the second movie, but because people complained too much about Season of the Witch’s story, producers felt obligated to include Michael Myers in every other movie since that point.
Plot Twist: The Goombahs knew they were around, didn't care about the crawling. And loved the idea they had to dance.
Bob H and John L were both really great as Mario and Luigi, they actually pulled off wearing the outfits very well! This movie could have been awesome if they would have stuck to the game more and the environment of it.

TheDUDERulez1 The main problem was the directors. They were extremely hard to work with, Hoskins stated this as the main reason he didnt enjoy doing this movie. Leguizamo, in 2012, personally video addressed the audience of a midnight viewing of the film, stating that he was proud the movie still had life, and appreciates those who liked it.

nah it was impossible its why theres been no remakes since. kids cartoon maybe but not a movie.
In fairness, it’s generally considered next to impossible to make a faithful Mario live-action film with today’s movie technology, let alone the time this one was made. Hell, credit where credit’s due, the movie had fantastic effects (yoshi’s design was basically the Source for Jurassic Park, and the Goomba head models were extremely detailed and practical; Hell, even the t-Rex had an awesome animatronic, just bad angle-work). Miyamoto himself enjoyed the movie but could see its flaws. His biggest critique was that the movie did half-measures; if it had been its own original IP, then it wouldn’t have needed been bogged down by the Mario references, and stood on its own two feet.

The George clinton walk the dinosaur cover is one of the greatest things to come out of this movie. They could have easily just done the standard deal of using licensed audio tracks but they went the extra mile for whatever reason and got the funk guy on board.
Me as a kid I have really enjoy that movie, when you are a kid you dont care or even think if they will reproduce the video game or not, you are simply happy to see your hero in a movie. Its a movie made originally for kids and only suppose to be love by them.
The last one looks like Shaquille O'Neal.

This was clearly a shout out to how the enemies would "dance" to the music in NSMB. Pretty impressive how they would reference a game that wouldn't come out for another 15 years.
I love this movie. Saw the ending on TV as a kid and found the film on DVD years later. This scene is funny.
This movie seemed like the concept of the Mario video games was described to the writers and director by a person with chronic schizophrenia.
Despite this movie failing, I thought it was really good. The best scene is the reveal of them wearing their trademark colors, Mario in red, Luigi in green.
Why is it we can appreciate things a lot better years later? (Also the Goombas/Koopas dancing is hilarious)
