a lot of boaters throw the replaced impellor into the old box as an emergency emergency spare, change the impellor every year and just keep last years as that emergency backup- it will be better than no impellor in a pinch.
If you're in a pinch, would you want to risk doing the same job twice? I've got a few years as a boat mechanic under my belt. If there is one thing I would not want on my boat, it is used consumable, "spares". You replace items for a reason, and that reason is usually that the old part is either worn or faulty. Otherwise, why would you replace them? If I were to put a used part back in service at any time, I would put myself at risk of introducing a fault, and potentially at a point when time was of the essence. (I.e Why would you replace an impeller, unless it failed during use (well, apart from during a routine maintenance job, anyway))? And if it fails during use, you're probably in a situation where you need the engine to work. Is that really the time when you want to risk having to replace the impeller >twice< because the used "spare" failed as well? I know it sounds wasteful, but I have had to redo work done by boat owners so many times, because of used "spares" failing. If it is a consumable part and it has been replaced, it is not a spare part worth keeping.
He mentioned in the video that due to the high cost of new parts he couldn't get as many spares as he would like. I feel like that is where this comes in. It's not like the plan would be to use the old one again, but if they for some reason run out of spares and absolutely need to get the engine running again then they have an option.
@@domner Understood. As he also said "2 is one, and 3 is 2. My point was basically that I think it is better to have the one, new spare until you can afford the second new one, instead of relying on a used spare. And certainly as your only spare, as you certainly should never put all your trust in a used consumable.

Theres nothing wrong with coast hopping there are brilliant places to visit and what an opportunity for your children to see marvellous places in the world we used to sail but now live in spain we love watching your fantastic journey you dont need to explain yourself decisions
You arer so right to stick to your ethos and plans for your adventures, This is your family and your dreams. Go at your own pace and feel comfortable within your own experience and skills. Sailing in a storm is not fun at all, very tiring and potentiallty very dangerous. As a captain, you have your first responsibility to keep everyone on board SAFE. Have fun and enjoy all the scenery and sea-life as you pass. Take the time to smell the roses on your path to adventure and don't see the destinatio, concentrate on the joys along the path there.
A phrase that would describe your short distances of travel would be to "Stop and smell the flowers" My grandparents took several bus tours before finding a tour company that would not rush through all the stops. He liked to stop and photograph flowers and scenic views. Jack will see more of the UK than many of the children he was in school with.
I'm convinced that your blog commenter has never done a boat refit on a budget. I have. It's a bear of a job even when you do have alternative housing, much less when you have to live on the boat while doing the myriad tasks you have faced. I have admired your tenacity and adaptability and I salute you and Melissa, Jack and Ollie. Well done! G King SV Intuition
Andy, you do not need to justify your reasons or plans to anyone else. It is your life, and your family (and their safety) that you must consider and put above all else. You also don’t need to worry, your response was calm and measured, just as it always is. You have to do what is right for you with what time and money allows you, all I know is I’m here for the journey!!!
To be fair, we don't know you in the slightest, and i mean this in the nicest possible way. It's great that we get to see snippets of your life, the parts you share with us. I say this because people who make comments like this don't know everything. There's a lot more to your lives than what we see.....obviously. Some people seem to think that because you run a youtube channel, it justifies making remarks loaded with opinions. Do your thing, live your lives, and don't feel the need to explain. Thanks for sharing.
Personally, I doubt I would have responded to that comment, cetainly not in the way you did, I think you handled that comment tactfully and honestly, well done. I don't find your channel boring at all, it's real, doing what you both on a budget, keep it up.
Fantastic, Onthought you addressed the comments like a legend, I can honestly say you all do a tremendous job and you allow us to live our dreams through you guys , It’s a massive privilege to do what you do and extremely brave too, God bless you all and happy sailing, Look forward to the next one
Please don't spend so much time addressing the haters. Most of us love your content and the direction of your channel. My request would be to spend less time giving these folks your time and energy. Sometimes you even say things to preemptively address what they will comment on and I just wish you'd block it out of your mind and leave it out of your videos. I know this comment in itself may seem negative but it comes from a friendly place. ❤
Dear ericduncan 👍👌👏 Well said, Sir, well said indeed! I always think exactly the same while watching Sailing Melody videos. Unfortunately it's kind of normal human behaviour to not ignore the negativity although there might be more than 90 percent positive comments. So let's please concentrate on those. Unfortunately I'm still too often a "those who teach don't do" guy (although I definitely know better!). 🙈 Best regards, luck and health in particular.

Smoke on start up is usually an indicator of worn valve guide seals. Minute qty of oil weeps into combustion chamber and burns up after starting from cold. Doesn't happen when warm as all parts expanded and compressing seals. As engibe cools seals shrink causing weeping. When it affects actual starting is the time to worry.
I appreciate your comments about"legit-bait". I've been wondering about the exaggerated titles of videos on a number of channels that I follow. Now I understand.
Hi Andy and family, fully agree with your comments on taking your time, it is a life journey and not a race. I have enjoyed following you and look forward to being part of your journey. We have started our rebuild and have the same mindset and you never know we may bump into you on our journey.
I enjoy watching your videos and enjoy the plans. I don't comment much because I watch on a smart TV. But non of your plans are boring. I look forward to each episode
So many people chase big things and forget what is really important. To be able to spend every day and night together as a family and achieve small steps one at a time is the real success in life. You might not know it yet, but you are living the dream already and wealth is measured on happiness. Bravo to the four of you, take your time and achieve amazing experiences together. Don’t waste your energy on explaining yourself, just sit back and look where you are, raise a glass and crack on!
Hi Andy, Melissa , Jack and Ollie. I have no desire to sail anywhere. However I have watched from the early days of Steel Melody. Your videos are brilliant I'm not talking about technical brilliance Its how you tell your story, How Melissa Jack and now Ollie are all part of . Keep on doing what you do As I said I have no desire to sail. But boy am I looking forward to doing it with you and your family Thanks for allowing us to come along with you
Nice Shirt. Re your engine Andy, I had a Lister with De-Compression leavers, in one of my boats, although Air Cooled there was more smoke initially until it had warmed up. I asked a Mechanic Friend to check the Rings and advise any faults, all was fine.
I really like what you do and the lengths you go to explain everything. Cruising in short hops gets my vote. Many good reasons for doing that. I like sailing but I also love arriving at new places. Just keep doing what you are doing… slow and steady wins the race 😊
I just love that you are traveling at YOUR pace!!! It is your life, so live it the best way for you and yours!! Greetings and love for your channel from the Texas Gulf Coast (Corpus Christi, TX USA)
Great vid, thankyou for explaining a lot of what & why you do things, quite frankly Andy, you don't need to explain to these people, you have said right from the start what your intentions were when you were fixing steel Melody, so why people are so negative is beyond me, part of your charm as a family is the slow pace & the small ports of call you visit, which make it so much more interesting & with greater detail, keep up the great work mate your doing a wonderful job, ( & Melisa , Jack & Ollie ) All the very best from New Zealand. ( Hope to see you all out here one day, & you will have a place to stay & recuperate & with a car to get around in. All the very best to you all.
Big YES on your homeschooling comments. We homeschooled from birth and now have 2 lovely adult children that thrive in life and both graduated at the top in their Bachelor’s degrees.
Andy and Melissa it's your boat you go where you like when you want its also your chosen way of life it's not up to any know it all to tell you what to do as the song says I will do it our way good luck see you next week I was concerned about covering the dinghy but you beat to it as Rod Stewart said We are sailing 😊😊
We’ve moved so many times, 11 since we’ve been married! We have three sons and we managed to survive. I believe it would be the same for living on a boat. The children will learn and adapt to the life style just as all children do. Sailing Melody has always been interesting in the many ways that they are educating Jack. He’s interested in many things and curious about all things that go on around him. By the way, I miss his Captain Jack reports, he did a great job!
About the exhaust smoke, sniff the exhaust to determine if it is diesel or motor oil. If it is motor oil, check the valve seals. The cold oil doesn’t return to the crank case. So the level in the valve cover rises and allows it to escape down the valve stems. When it warms up the condition heals up. If it smells like diesel it is out of my expertise. We love your channel.
Melissa, once Jack may thrive in the American college program. We have a 2 year community college system that feeds into 4 year colleges, but is an associate degree. You can do duel enrollment, so finishing high school credits while doing college classes. A lot of homeschool children do it. Many of the classes are on line. So when he gets to be about 16, you should look into it. It’s so cool doing on line classes that are affordable and count towards college. The children in our school district pay something like $25 for duel enrollment. They don’t require proof of citizen ship for kids to go to public schools. There are tons of chat groups all over that can give you information as time goes by. Engineering and design, wine making, optometry, EMT, anything jack can imagine is offered in the community college system. It just depends on which State and which school.
You. Are doing fine sail and do your own thing. Kids are resilient remember once round the world better than a university degree I can personally can. attest to that. So do your own thing folks cheers n beers Marty Australia
I think you’ve made all the right decisions. Follow your dreams and teach your children to do the same. What better school is there? Don’t spend time or energy defending yourselves from critisism from coutch sailors or besserwissers.
while I am not a expert on your brand of diesel engine but some diesel engines have rubber caps[grommets] that sit on the valve stem and valve guide . They stop oil entering via the valve stem and valve . These rubber caps[grommets ] get stiff and crack with age . When they do crack and and not provide a seal is when oil will be “sucked” into the combustion chamber on shutdown due to the vacumn of the manifold . The rubber grommets can be changed in situ , but it’s tricky . 23:41 Then when completed a couple of beers help finish the job.
I second all the comments that support your plans and how you run your channel (the more viewers the better for your financial well-being). You guys have accomplished so much already ... its a joy to watch. What I'd like to know is what the seller of the sewing machine did to resolve the wrong machine being delivered. Hope you eventually get the machine you actually ordered.
Great that you got the sewing machine!! Just use lots and lots of oil on ALL moving parts!! Get the big plastik balance wheel from Sailrite(I am using it for 5years with lots of sewing),the long belt and the cogged pulley for the motor. Andy can build a wooden base where the machine sits in,an then just sew a fitted carrying bag. 95%of the time straight stich will be just fine. Happy sewing!! All the best to you four!
Ignore the criticisms. You both are very responsible parents to those lovely boys. Your channel is great and I love watching you. Don’t let others bring you down. Stay safe and enjoy x
The guy that sent that comment sounds like a real sailing hero 😮. I don't understand why people can't just just do their own thing and let you guy's do yours .You have come a long way
I wouldn't sale with him and I have done some really high risk sailing dinghies out of sight of land no coms no support boat no shelter and storm force winds.
Just thinking you are so brave changing your safe life for what ever may be. This summer i moved my yacht from norway to the soutern part of denmark 1300 km journey . Just one week of cruising, mostly at 27 knots on a calm northsea. I would never be thinking of crossing any ocean at all. Prefer chugging along in my safe baltic playpool. Love your vlogs.😊
I have such praise for families that are able to home school their kids. Besides creating a major bond with their kids they are able to actually teach true and correct information and encourage personal growth by letting them explore their interest and not just basic cattle curriculum that schools use to indoctrinate. Your kids will forever appreciate you for it.
You do not have to explain anything to anyone Andy. You are doing an exellent job and what you do and where you go depends on your family and the circumstances you find yourself in. I thoroughly enjoy you videos as I have from the start. Both of you are good at what you do and Jack is a remarkable young man. Ollie is coming along nicely. The idiots on TH-cam are always having a go against anyone who is doing the right things. They are envious of your lifestyle and popularity. Ignore them. Interesting episode. Keep well and safe. James.
Hi Andy, Melissa & boys. First of all we just wanted to say how much we enjoy your channel. Never, ever is it boring. Boat jobs are part of boat ownership and who wants to go off sailing in a boat that isn't safe. The questions from those two people are so stupid, it's ridiculous. Personal opinion only 😜 Regarding the smoking engine, was it worn valve stems seals? Thanks for entertaining us each week with awesome content. Don't listen to anyone who says otherwise! Cheers from the crew of sailing willow II.
Ollie is more of a Waldorf project. I am sure your community will be able to help out with any stuff you need. I will toss my hat in for any heavy metallurgy questions, sorry for being a bit specialized but you never know😂. Love your channel and wish you well on your voyages.
The smoke on startup is an easy fix - its due to old hardened valve stem seals. A couple of hours to fix with a few basic tools and a valve spring removal tool.
oh my it's amazing how many forget that it's the journey not the destination! You can travel almost all the way around the world and never lose sight of land, almost. but the people you will meet and the sights you will see harbor hopping. Going across the ocean can be really boring, miles and miles of miles and miles. Do it your way. when the kids get older, if they want to see what crossing the ocean is like do it then.
Great explanation however I feel your approach is brilliant life is the journey and there is no reason to rush through it enjoy each step and destination life is short and time is precious so enjoy the journey and especially your family through this expedition plans may and will change along the way and what I see is your mindset is in the perfect position to make this one amazing life experience ❤
Well responded to your future plans. Your plans will never meet another persons plan. Do it your way and what is right for you as you said. Good luck and love to all❤
You are a para medic I believe so your actions are probably guided by you professional caution. I applaud you for this and your attention to details. You will succeed at your own pace. Lucky you to be marred to a keen sailor who can sew.
Hi Andy, Melissa, lightning Jack and baby Oliver , I really enjoy your videos when lightning Jack has a little bit of import he is a very intelligent young man and he just loves his little brother. You can see that whenever they are together. Probably being an only child and thinking you are the only one it’s wonderful to see lightning Jack with his brother Oliver, really love and appreciate you all and hopefully one day you’ll be here in Australia and we can catch up. I’d be looking forward to that. Keep doing what you’re doing Cliff from Australia

I can only echo what others have said about haters, trolls, etc. You don't have to justify every last little thing. As a great philosopher once said: The only way to avoid criticism is to say nothing, do nothing and BE nothing. Just keep on doing your own thing and most of all, don't let the bar-stewards grind you down.

Wonderful vlog, my darlings! Nobody can foresee unexpected 'teething problems' a (apart from with Ollie 🤭☺️, so being safe rather than sorry is paramount, no matter what anyone else says! ❤❤❤❤
My thoughts regarding the dinghy, why not consider a dinghy which you can sail but can accept an outboard. Would be a great addition especially for the boys.
I thoroughly endorse the +ve comments against the -ve comment . To suggest that going thru such a storm as a child first time out is fine is like throwing your child overboard and expecting them to swim to shore as swimming lesson No.1 . You both as sailing parents are doing it the most prudent way . I take my hat off to you both . Cheers from Gold Coast , Queensland , AUS.
I thought your responses to the comments from the list from one watcher were very well addressed, the only people who know the way and reasons things take place are you guys. Happy sailing.

Andy, I am sure you are too kind. I will say it, that bloke can bugger-off. He can live his own life, and let you live yours.
You do what you think is the best for your family and dont give a f-- of what other people thinks. keep up the good work
Theres nothing wrong with coast hopping there are brilliant places to visit and what an opportunity for your children to see marvellous places in the world we used to sail but now live in spain we love watching your fantastic journey you dont need to explain yourself decisions
I have.
It's a bear of a job even when you do have alternative housing, much less when you have to live
on the boat while doing the myriad tasks you have faced.
I have admired your tenacity and adaptability and I salute you and Melissa, Jack and Ollie. Well done!

Dear ericduncan
👍👌👏 Well said, Sir, well said indeed! 🙈
Best regards, luck and health in particular.
I would go further and say don’t waste ANY time on haters. They are irrelevant.
Thanks for Yet Another Greatly Informative Vidclip ... 'Guys', you will Always get the 'Detractors' and will always try to give you 'The Bash' .... That is the World .... :-) :-) :-) Very best to You All .... Cheers from ChCh, NZ
Love you all since day one 😊 thanks for addressing your questions and please just block the negative bs. Blessings to you all 😇⛵️⛵️⛵️🥰
Hi Andy and family, fully agree with your comments on taking your time, it is a life journey and not a race. I have enjoyed following you and look forward to being part of your journey. We have started our rebuild and have the same mindset and you never know we may bump into you on our journey.
Spotted you coming into Fishguard the other day. I was on one of the visitors moorings further in near the harbour. Good luck with your travels👍
😊😊
I love your lucid and calm explanation why you want to live your life and not that of a hero sailor! Keep on keeping on and I will keep watching!
Your comments regarding the comments were exceptional, you simply can't please everyone but you can certainly be truthful in what you are doing.
Your videos are brilliant I'm not talking about technical brilliance
Its how you tell your story, How Melissa Jack and now Ollie are all part of . Keep on doing what you do
As I said I have no desire to sail. But boy am I looking forward to doing it with you and your family
Thanks for allowing us to come along with you
You are living so many people’s dream. Just not everyones cup of tea. You are awesome
That's good to know thank you ☺️
What an amazing family you are. It's great to follow your progress. Best wishes to you all 👍⛵
while I am not a expert on your brand of diesel engine but some diesel engines have rubber caps[grommets] that sit on the valve stem and valve guide .
Still working on that 🙈🙈
Great that you got the sewing machine!!
Bravo. It's your boat, your family, your vision. I like your vision for your family. Keep making your own choices. Bless you all.
James.
Nice bit of wood for the dinghy cradle! Good luck guys xx
That comment was pretty harsh but you handled it brilliantly. You guys be you and not someone or something you’re not.
I think you are all doing brilliantly. Well done!
Hi guys. You mentioned visiting the Channel Islands. Be sure to visit us here in Alderney where you’ll find a warm welcome.
Love this channel and you guys any body that doesn’t don’t matter just don’t take it to heart we love what you’re doing ❤❤❤
I enjoyed that, i always wondered how you and others managed financially . Especially these tubers with multi million pound cars etc
Well responded to your future plans. Your plans will never meet another persons plan. Do it your way and what is right for you as you said. Good luck and love to all❤
Great to hear about Jack. It sounds like he is really benefitting already with your new lifestyle. All the best.
You are a para medic I believe so your actions are probably guided by you professional caution. I applaud you for this and your attention to details. You will succeed at your own pace. Lucky you to be marred to a keen sailor who can sew.
Carry on as you are , your doing fine, from Hampshire 🇬🇧
Hi Andy, Melissa, lightning Jack and baby Oliver , I really enjoy your videos when lightning Jack has a little bit of import he is a very intelligent young man and he just loves his little brother. You can see that whenever they are together. Probably being an only child and thinking you are the only one it’s wonderful to see lightning Jack with his brother Oliver, really love and appreciate you all and hopefully one day you’ll be here in Australia and we can catch up. I’d be looking forward to that. Keep doing what you’re doing Cliff from Australia
Don't worry about them negative ppl! You enjoy your adventures, not matter how close the next anchorage! 😊 I like to watch Melissa's projects.. keep up the good work ..
Great episode, enjoyed the way you dealt with the comments. My Son has a TH-cam channel, he could learn a thing or two from you guys. Keep it going, looking forward to watching all the adventures.
Wonderful vlog, my darlings!
Nobody can foresee unexpected 'teething problems' a
(apart from with Ollie 🤭☺️, so being safe rather than sorry is paramount, no matter what anyone else says!
❤❤❤❤
Don’t sweat the negative comments. Do what makes you and yours happy.
Another channel you might want to talk to is Sailing with Six, currently in French Polynesia. An Aussie family that started in a monohull, bought a cat in Mexico, crossed Panama, sailed up to Canada and then traced back their path to head accross the Pacific
Andy, I am compelled to remind you of the many intellectual fallacies which plague our indeering dialect. Please find your way , sir. This can be a remarkable voyage worthy of consideration. We bless your heart's 😊
Great episode guys 👍👍10 out of 10!!
I think, and it is only my opinion?? But you can either do things the way you both want to do it and live life the way you want to or live it to everyone else’s way of living life??
We all only have one life so, in my opinion, go live life to the best of your abilities.
Love your content, great channel ( one of my top 5)
Best wishes for the future and all what you are doing 👍👍❤️❤️🇮🇪🇮🇪
