      Just the excess stuff... you'll avoid a super smokey house if you do. And your oven will look like new afterward. It's the best!

      It is one of the scariest things to do if there's any excess debris or grease inside. It can produce small flames and alot of smoke and heats up the cabinets and wall. I read that running the cycle often it can wear out the heating elements. I sponge clean the moment I see any splatter or grease. Not worth the superheated cleaning.

    To avoid damage to lock, do NOT attempt to open oven door while oven is in self clean.
    When the self cleaning cycle is done, it could take up to two more hours for oven to cool down to a safe temperature.

    The self clean works very well. Steam clean it first. Get all the loose gunk out before you do it, and you're good to go. Your oven looks brand new when you use the self-clean feature. Obviously,only do it once in a while. Make sure all the windows are open and fans are going.

    I waited 25 years before finally purchasing a self cleaning oven. (Through the child-rearing years, if something wasn't broken, we didn't spend the $$$ to get new.) So for years I ...well... ok, lets be honest: I RARELY cleaned my oven.😂 When I did, it was SUCH a pain that I did EVERYTHING I could to avoid getting it dirty in the first place. When my GE double wall oven - a refurbished, 1960's [non-self cleaning] model the previous homeowner installed - finally konked out in 2019, I was elated!😂 (Notice how long THAT one lasted!) So we bought another GE. I love it.
    Now, to be fair, I'm still a "careful to be as clean as I can" chef/baker but how nice it is to not wig out when the baked mashed potato casserole bubbles over or someone forgets to put tin foil under the pizza.
    If wiping out ash is your idea of work, then this isn't for you, my friend. The ONLY thing easier would be for a maid to come in and do it for you. But, if you're ok with wipin' out ash to make your oven look like new, then a self cleaning oven is RIGHT up your alley! ❤

    What idiot designers thought it was a good idea to place all the large burners up front? Not just one manufacturer, but all of them. The old set up of one large and one small in back and up front was perfect.
    With all the large burners up front of which are used the most you get splatters all over you, your oven door handle, the floor and any hand towels hanging on the handle. Most of the cooking odor or steam is not sucked up by the exhaust vent. Large pots or pans are close to the edge making it dangerous. And if you use both large burners at the same time it either makes it dangerous or unable to access the rear burners. Stupid design change

    I live in a rental with a very cheap oven but there is a self cleaning option on the dial that you can turn with your hand, only. There are no digital dials or any options anywhere to choose how long I want it to self clean.
    It’s been on self clean today for four hours.
    I’m wondering if it will turn off by itself given that it’s a cheap oven with no options to choose a time. ??

    • @geappliances
      @geappliances  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Thresh!
      Any excessive amount of spillover (juices or liquid grease) not baked-on should always be wiped out with a wet cloth before running through a self-clean cycle. Depending on the amount of soil in your oven, you may need to increase the length of self-clean time, if the time is adjustable on your particular model. Thanks - TH

    • @geappliances
      @geappliances  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi Meg,
      Thanks for reaching out to us about your self-clean oven. The finish on the racks can become dull if they are not designed to be left in the oven while self-cleaning. This can also make the racks difficult to slide in and out of the oven.
      Many of our ranges have a Hidden Bake element. This design places the bake element under the floor of the oven where it is concealed under a non-removable porcelain enameled oven floor. This eliminates hard-to-reach areas that collect food and spills and makes the oven easier to clean.
      We hope this information helps! Please let us know if you have additional questions. TH

    • @geappliances
      @geappliances  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hello Kim - thanks for checking with us! Unfortunately, continuous use of chemical cleaners on a self-cleaning oven liner will cause etching and discoloration of the liner, & eventually cause the oven not to clean when using the self-clean cycle. If you have already used an oven cleaner on your self-cleaning oven, be sure to remove all traces of the cleaner prior to operating the self-cleaning cycle again. Oven cleaner residue should be rinsed with clear water by using a damp (not soaked) rag.

    Question: I have a Spectra circa 2003-ish. It says to remove birds from the area. Does that mean there’s toxic nonstick coating in the oven? My kitchen does not have windows, so ventilating is tricky. It’s open to the living area where there are windows, but that means whatever the oven outgases will filter through the entire upper floor of my house. I rarely use the oven, and when I do I always cover my dishes and use a baking sheet under them to limit spillage and spattering (which is why I’m just now having to ask these questions after all these years). There are just a few small spots on the floor of the oven, and a bit of film on the window, which is why I want to clean it, but I’m wondering if a scrubby sponge and hot, soapy water is the way to go, rather than a self clean cycle.

      birds are highly sensitive to fumes that’s why they are used in coal mines and such. So if anyone has a pet bird in their house it is best to remove them from the home and also yourselves while it is cleaning but keep your entire house ventilated. It emits a very caustic odor and off gas. If you don’t keep your house ventilated it will smell like this for a week. 😬🫤

      Hi Moira,
      Thanks for reaching out, we'd be happy to help. It's true that once you start a Self Clean cycle you should not try to force the door open, as it would be locked. The door would also remain locked after the cycle's over as the oven cools. You shouldn't try to open it then either. The oven would need to cool further before you're able to open the oven door.
      If you'd like to read more about Self Clean and what you should remove from your oven before starting it, take a look at this article: spklr.io/6055lurx
      As for stopping a Self Clean cycle, normally you can simply press the Cancel/Off pad on your control panel. Many ranges and wall ovens offer a Steam Clean option (this is sometimes called a Light Self Clean option) for easily cleaning small spills using water and a lower cleaning temperature than a Self-Clean cycle. It's a 30-min cycle time. We do not recommend pouring water into the bottom of you unit. You will want to follow the instructions for self-cleaning that can be found in your manual. We can also provide a link to an article below that has more details on the self clean option. We hope this helps! If we can look into anything else feel free to reach back out and let us know.

It has the griddle top I enjoy for breakfasts and etc. Cooks so well and I wanted to ensure to take very good care of it & keep it nice and clean. So decided to purchase the one with steam and self clean. It costs extra of course🧐...ok so I have this so called self clean feature and the steam clean. The steam clean did absolutely nothing and the cup of water was all still at the bottom. For self clean do you put the cup of water too? It doesn't specify. Then you got to clean before the self clean and there will be fumes? No thanks! I don't have birds however I do have two Chow chows and their breathing is very sensitive. IDK why this is even an offering other than to just charge someone extra...yeah I'm glad I paid an extra $100 for this feature 🙄 I guess they do mean self clean as in you clean it yo self!

For the self clean, you do not need to add water to the oven. We do take feedback seriously and will make sure to pass this along to our development team for review. If it's a self- clean oven no commercial oven cleaner (even those stating for self-clean models) of any kind should be used in or around any part of the self-clean oven. • @geappliances
      @geappliances  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The self-clean cycle saves time and energy. The oven is cleaned by heat at temperatures above normal cooking temperatures, which causes soil to disappear from the oven. A device in the oven, called a smoke-eliminator, further converts soil into an essentially odorless colorless vapor. You can find more information about this in the article we can link below for you. Can I open the oven while the door is locked?

    • @geappliances
      @geappliances  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello-Thank you for reaching out to us. You will have an oven lock light that comes on that indicates it's in this mode.
      The oven Lock light is designed to come on 30 to 40 minutes into a clean cycle. At this point, the door is automatically locked. The oven has reached about 600 degrees, and it is not safe to open the door.
      The lock light will stay on for the rest of the cycle and will remain on until the oven cools below 600 degrees. When the light goes out, the door can be opened.
      The lock light is thermostatically controlled and may come on if cooking at high temperatures for a long period of time. If the Lock light glows when the oven set is switched to Clean and the oven is still hot from previous baking or broiling, the light may glow to indicate that the oven is too hot for the latch to be moved to the clean position. If this occurs, allow the oven to cool, and then you should be able to slide the latch.
      We hope this information helps. If we can look into anything else for you feel free to reach out and let us know. Sincerely-DM

      We recommend running the self-clean cycle on your oven two to three times per year to maintain your oven's interior. Our ovens and ranges are designed to operate through self-clean cycles reliably. So am I. I recently had a pan of oil catch on fire - I put it under water and there was a minor explosion....don't want to go through that again - ever!

      @@TrudiMercury Cooking 101 - DON'T PUT WATER IN OIL THAT'S ON FIRE! Oil doesn't mix with water, so the water doesn't ever put out the fire. First, you need to turn off the heat from your stove/oven. Then, you need to either use a fire extinguisher, or you need to put a towel over the fire to get rid of the oxygen. Another method is to smother it with baking SODA (NOT baking powder) or salt. This works because Fire requires oxygen. If you get rid of the oxygen, you get rid of the fire.

      Hi Cee!
      Thanks for reaching out. Some ranges have Self Clean oven racks; these types of racks are able to be left in the oven during a Self Clean cycle. If you'd like to read more about Self Clean tips, you can click here: spklr.io/6050mOv4

      Hit the cancel button. If all else fails go down and hit the breaker button or disconnect it.

    Eh i rather spend a few bucks on natural cleaners, clean it a bit after every use and avoid the cost it will add to my gas bill. Having an incinerator in my stove sounds like something id rather avoid, danger danger Will Robinson.

    NOT clear or precise. It does nothing when I hit the self clean button. There are further steps that need to be taken, and this tells me nothing.

    One quick pro tip I got from an appliance repair guy: When using the GE Self-Cleaning cycle, remember to NEVER USE THE SELF-CLEANING CYCLE!!! It burns out the controls and is the single most common cause for service repairs. Both of the cleaning cycles (steam and self) are unfunny jokes. Just get down on your hands and knees like Grandma did and clean it yourself with a scrubbing pad.

      Wow! That is crazy! This video tells you not to use any oven cleaner products!...so what do you use to clean it? Comet?

    • @adamwilliams2679
      @adamwilliams2679 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well in my case I would apparently need to clean the damn thing before attempting the cycle anyway, which is absolutely absurd. I watched some videos on cooking steaks using the broiler and they all made it look smooth and clean. Couple minutes after I put the steaks in, grease was flying everywhere and even bursting into flame puffs. Super fun. I almost just hit the button because I was feeling lazy. Glad I waited.

      @@elizabethvalentine3820 Easy-Off makes a "safe for self-cleaning ovens" formula. It's in a blue spray can. That's what I'm going to try. Some steaks I was attempting to broil made such a mess of the oven that using the cleaning cycle would probably make everyone in my building call the fire department.

      Steam self-cleaning doesn't reach high temperatures, so the steam cleaning is perfectly fine.
