      My acne as a teen was bad, not the worst, but it was because i used to pick at my skin. I also wasn't using the right cleansers/ moisturizer as I wasn't that informed. Now I just have dark spots and a minor breakout here and there

      @@mar__k try 3 step moisture by olena, it' basically, 1. water (clean, use water that u can drink) 2. humectant (hydrating toner/serum, hyaluronic acid, glycerin) 3. abit moisturizer (pea size amount). You have to do the next step immediately after the the previous.
      When the moisturizer set, it will have skin like finish, it's not like you have a film on your skin.
      You can watch the explanation on her youtube channel, "olena beley"

      @@mar__k hey, do not just use niacinamide and ceramides to treat your acne. There are many actives that are meant to treat acne. They are retinoids, salicylic acid, AHA, Sulfur, Benzoyl peroxide, and azelaic acid. Niacinamide is just a garnish of your treatments. It can not be solely employed to treat acne. It is not anti bacterial, exfoliant, or increasing skin cell turnover.

    I finally got in with a derm after a year and all she said was “there’s nothing you can do” and prescribed me a tretinoin cream saying it MIGHT help. I asked for product recommendations and all she said was cerave, no other suggestions. So frustrating. So thankful for Dr Dray

    • @rookiesatparody
      @rookiesatparody 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      I'm no dermatologist or a qualified skin specialist. I can however, provide you a review from a consumer standpoint, Cerave works well for my oily, blemish prone and sensitive skin. And also, most, if not all their products are fragrance free which is something to consider if you have sensitive skin, and it's more reasonably priced as well 😊
      I love their:
      ➡️Eye Repair Cream (one of the only eye creams that don't give me bumps around my undereyes)
      ➡️AM (with SPF30) & PM Facial Moisturising Lotion (don't recommend for drier skin, it's very lightweight, may not be moisturising enough)
      ➡️ Skin Renewing Night Cream (has a thick, ointment like consistency but not greasy, helps significantly with my redness and dry patch on inner cheeks)
      ➡️ Hydrating Hyaluronic Acid Serum (it's like a lightweight gel cream, helps with hydration)
      I hope this helps in any way!

      Emily, You did not say what the diagnosis was - what was the state of your skin when you went to the dermatologist? A dermatologist usually isn't going to recommend products that they know won't be effective. Cerevae is excellent. She could have recommended them to you only making an educated guess that it's what you really wanted to hear to make yourself feel better so you could spend money for no other reason than hope. Try going to an esthetician instead.

    • @inspiredby624
      @inspiredby624 2 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Derms don't really know much about specific cosmetic products at most they'll recommend whatever they've been given free samples of or general "medical" skin care like Cerave. You might be better off asking a pharmacist or an esthetician for product recommendations.

      @@violetviolet888 She definitely does. But I wouldn't expect that kind of knowledge from every derm out there. They know the important ingredients but they don't always keep up with new technology or the nuances of different products. And they're not gonna try out a bunch of different products in their free time just to offer better recommendations to their patients.

    I study soil mechanics and there's also a "water content" for all types of soils (sand, clay, etc.). When soils have too much water, they behave similar to liquids, which is dangerous because they can collapse in an instant. When soils are dry, they appear crumbled and there is weak bond between particles. Similarly, there's no definite answer as to "how much water is needed" but we have what we call the "optimum moisture content". At this optimum value of water content, the soil has increased strength and does not compress easily, and water cant escape quickly from the soil. I hope we all can find our skin's optimum moisture content! ❤ Love this video, Dr. Dray!

      @mariaong2353 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @@jamiehorwitz1227 Hello there. In soil mechanics, moisture content and water content are used interchangeably since they basically mean the same thing. But yeah, for skins in particular, they are different. From Dr. Dray's videos, I have been aware that a moisturizer locks in water that's why she suggested slathering it on wet/damp skin right after showering so as to prevent transepidermal water loss. Have a nice day!

    It is a year from this video now. I thought I had watched every one of your videos, but somehow missed this one, and this has been one of my big questions. I've tried moisturizing AM and PM, but I am OLD, and by about 1pm, I am dry. I live in a dry climate in SoCal. HA doesn't seem to help me much even with a nice occlusive moisturizer on top. SPF seems to dry me out even more, even those that everyone else thinks are moisturizing. So, I am going to try moisturizer at mid day for a while, and see how that goes. Somehow, I don't dry out overnight as much as I do during the day. I've been watching your channel since 2019, and the single thing that has made the biggest difference for me is applying moisturizer on wet skin. Thank you. Oh, I am a lap swimmer in summer, and didn't get so dry. Thank you again for helping me feel happy with my ancient skin.

    If you are prone to heat/sweat rash under your breasts, armpits/crevice areas (it's a problem for me in the Summer) I highly recommend using a body powder that contains salicylic acid like Gold Baum and/or a lotion that has an AHA in it. Avoid "wet" deodarants or dry them with a hair dryer after application. Keep your skin moisturized but "dry" as much as possible.

    This is literally something I'm dealing with right now. My face during these months (and using Retin-A) is so dry and my face needs a lot of moisturizer. But my neck oddly isn't dry at all and I thought it was good to hydrate it anyways. What I have now is a rash on on my lowest neck line that has gotten pretty bad. I'm using Canesten on it right now, so hopefully it'll work.
    Edit: Come to find it was actually eczema.

      The cream I was using (Canesten) wasn't working so I went to my Dr. I was told it was eczema. I never put the Retin-A on my neck, so I knew it wasn't that. I was prescribed a hydrocortisone cream but it too, didn't do anything oddly enough. Ive resorted to purchasing Cetaphil Pro Eczema lotion. It actually is working quite well. Even aquaphor was irritating it. But with this Cetaphil, so far so good. I apply it about 4x a day. I like it so much that I use it on my whole face and neck. But I make sure always even to apply it to my neck first before my face so that I don't drag any residual Retin-A on my neck.

    I'm glad you talked about this because this topic has been on my mind. Would you dedicate a video to debunking the myth that undermoisturizing increases oil production sometime? I even hear that from other derms and it confuses me because you and other scientists have stated that to be false

    • @boomboom6577
      @boomboom6577 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s actually true. It’s basic. Your oil production increases to compensate for the lack of moisture. It’s kind of common sense- if your body couldn’t do this, your skin would dry out if you don’t moisturize. The body is simply trying to make the skin do what it’s supposed to do: act as a waterproof protectant against elements and protect you from things that would penetrate your skin and cause you harm. Moisturizing actually helps your body regulate your oil production. That said, some people produce an excessive amount of oil. In that case, moisturizer is still needed. But medications like spiro can regulate the oil production.
      But if you don’t moisturize, your oil production can increase. If you have acne prone skin, the surge of oil can cause clogged pores.
      But you can always just choose a light moisturizer.
      It is not myth, there’s nothing to debunk.

    • @sirseth1087
      @sirseth1087 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@boomboom6577 No, it isn’t true. Dr.Dray and other dermatologists have said time and time again that the skin does not have a biofeedback loop. Skin doesn’t “know” that it is not being moisturized. Oil regulation is controlled by ones’ hormones-no moisturizer can change that. When skin is irritated and stripped of too much moisture, that does cause inflammation which can lead excessive oil production. It’s an inflammatory response to irritation. But that isn’t because skin is literally thinking “We’re dry, so let’s moisturize.” Lol
      Sincerely, a very oily rosacean in the southern US. I slathered on moisturizer for the last 3 years and only when I stopped moisturizing and stuck to a basic gentle cleanser did my skin clear up and normalize again.

    • @elizabethevelyn7125
      @elizabethevelyn7125 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@boomboom6577 I used to believe that too until recently! It seems like common sense, like you said, but a lot of professionals have started pretty definitively that skin actually doesn't work like that. It's really interesting actually!
      Editing to urge you to read Labmuffin's article on "the myth of rebound oil". Sir Seth is pretty on the nose; dryness can lead to irritation/inflammation, which leads to pre-existing oil stores being re-directed to those areas. It sounds like a very similar thing, but it technically isn't, and I'd love for Dr Dray to talk about that 😄

    Thank you for influencing people all round the globe regarding skin care. Since we trust you the most can you please review a sunscreen for me?
    I am from Nepal and I have noticed that people there are lured into buying products manufactured in the west.
    I have been using combination gel sunscreen from the brand Fixderma manufactured in India since years and it served my sensitive skin very well along with neutrogena sensitive skin moisturizer. However after I recently came to UK I was tempted to buy more expensive sunscreen
    ( La Roche Posay invisible fluid) assuming that products in West are more effective since they are regulated and backed up by research, along with neutrogena SA acne was (I am prone to blackheads). After few days of using these products
    I noticed my skin developed red which turned to dark patches (hyperpigmentation maybe?) which look permanent and I started to feel burning sensation whenever I used it afterwards ( contact dermatitis maybe). This stressed me out and I began to compare my old sunscreen ( Fixderma SPF 30 gel) with new ( La Roche Posay). To be honest I did see the same ingredients in my old sunscreen as in some fancier sunscreen in the west. Why are Nepalese and Indian's so drawn to Western skin care products? Are they actually better? Is it just a myth? You might say that perhaps La Roche Posay did not suit my skin, if so then can I trust my old sunscreen 100% that it works equally good as western ones and go back to using it (which I am confident will not react to my skin) or should I experiment with more sunscreen formulated for sensitive skin?
    This is just one experience of mine but in general does the sunscreen formulated in East say India not meet the standards of sun protection. What do they lack in ( maybe refering to the Fixderma sunscreen I used)?Could you please answer this for greater good.

    Hmmm. A few years ago I was applying CeraVe Healing Ointment under my nose pretty religiously while suffering from a cold. After maybe a week, I got a terrible case of perioral dermatitis in that area. I thought this was from too much occlusives trapping moisture in the skin. My skin has had numerous issues throughout my 47 years. I have eczema on my legs that flare up during the fall and winter. I have rosceasa on my face and numerous issues with that. I have been to a handful of dermatologist and what have found to help the most is stop using products and makeup for a while.
    I havent used anything on my face except mild soap for two years and it has done more good than anything else. My scalp is now having issues, but at least my face is better than it has been in a long time.
    I'm going to start bringing makeup back a little bit throwing out my old makeup. I want to try vanicream and just see how my skin does. I have such reactive skin I'm scared honestly.
