    Hi! We're Nick and Jen, a retired military veteran of 14 years and professional dancer/entertainer at Coyote Ugly Bar. Together, we decided to sell everything and break free of the glitz, glam and chaos of city life to move off gird. We live on our 20 acres of remote land in the mountains of Southern Utah.
    We’re trying to be as self sufficient as possible by installing all our own utilities and doing everything DIY with as much modern technology as can make happen. Living off grid is about the freedom to build our own path one plank at a time. Life, indeed, is Elevated Off Grid. Come along and see what life is like as we continue to build our property and adventure around Southern Utah's mountains.

    Hey yall, at 20:50 it is called Utility Trim. Then there is a tool called Snap Lock Punch, that punches barbs that snap in and hold onto this trim. Some people call this under window trim. You can use this trim alone or inside J-trim. Just leaving it float free is not a good option, as it will fall out eventually & nails are ugly if you go that route.

    that top fastener inside the J-Chanel is called a top lock, they make a tool to "notch" your siding so that it locks in place, you can also do it with a razor knife and a wide blade flat screwdriver. Your local supplier should have those 2 items that will definitely secure your siding. :) House and land are looking great, keep up the good SAFE work.

    Top trim piece: it’s called a (Sill Trim)used for top and under windows J-Chanel. There’s also a crimper tool to put dimples along top siding pieces to lock it in. Job looks good 👍🏻. Be safe up there

    Nick and Jenn and family - couple of things. First, very thankful that your family and property are safe! We're getting smoke from all 3 Utah fires here in St George. Second, since you don't have the correct trim, pull those pieces of siding off and put some dabs of construction adhesive in the j-channel. Third, when you have to make those long horizontal cuts on your siding, you can use your table saw. Just take the blade off and put it on the saw backwards. You'll get a nice clean cut and using the fence it'll be nice and straight. Your hands,will thank you not having to use those snips! Take care!

    There is a company that makes siding that is fireproof. It's made of cement, but looks like wood. If you were to go to Good Simple Living, their home in Idaho, in the woods and mountains, is clad in it.

    Sending prayers! We had some bad fires here in Texas a few years back. After that panic, I made a list of the most important items for us to take with us if we had to evacuate. We kept our vehicles fueled up, packed bug-out bags and at one point I staged everything (like important papers etc) so we could quickly grab it and get out. I still have a list on the side of our fridge for emergencies. I pray you don't have to continue dealing with this, I know it is very scary.

    I would rent a brake, (this permits you to bend the aluminum to size), and get a roll of white aluminum and cover the wood around the garage door. That way it would be maintenance free. You could also use it to cover the facia board as well.

  • @williamberry9237
    @williamberry9237 20 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

    Piece you are missing at the top of your siding is called under sill trim. Not necessary but looks good. To secure top row of siding use a 8p nail to poke a hole through siding just below the highest crease and then use a siding trim nail. Size difference allows the siding to float and not crush/push towards the structure.

  • @peterhenderson3694
    @peterhenderson3694 19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    The trim you’re missing is called under sill trim and you will need the punch to create the tab that will lock into it. I use it to stiffen siding like the piece above the garage doors as well. Use it above and below windows too if you’ve cut the lap off creating a flappy edge. Try not to rip long pieces with snips rather score it with a razor knife and snap the siding this prevents waves created by the snips. You can also use matching color caulk in the last nailing fin to hold the last piece but not my first choice. Keep up the great work and stay safe.

    The piece of vinyl you are looking for is called under seal trim. You have to buy a hand crimped notcher crimp along the edge of your cut. Slide it up into that under seal trim. It locks it in place and you don't see it. It goes up into your channel

    This close call is a blessing. Please come up with a plan to save your cat babies just in case. I know you will automatically take your dog with you but the kitties NEED you to save them too. They will not survive with out their owner's protection. They depend on you for health and safety just as much as the pup baby does. Just wanted to give a friendly reminder that kitry parents need an emergency plan for the kitties who are part of the family. They deserve it!!!

    So very glad the fire didn't get to your property, and may God bless those who's home may have been affected by the fire! I wait for all your updates on the siding, it's really going to make it look so much more complete. Speaking of the fires, I am sure you are taking another look at what all you could do to help keep your family and property even more safe, Getting rid of the fuel is the best way to protect you and yours. I hate that the trees you have around your mountain burn so easily, big bummer! Oh and the Can-Am ride, super kewl that you put the kids in the drivers seat, by the time they are old enough to drive, they will have so much better understanding of how to do it and do it right!

    I’m glad you are safe,and the fire fighters did great work on the fire. We had a fire about 8 years ago that came about 3/4 of a mile from our house,and the ambers were hitting the boat canopy. We loaded up the truck camper and loaded the boat with all the animals and went to my sister’s house in the next town and I came back and was spraying the house and the shed with 💦 that was very scary to go through.

    I am glad that the fire went the other direction. And your family was safe. Plus no other buildings or property was damaged. The siding does look good. My only concern is the siding is It fire proof, plus heat resistance. I remember watching a video in California of a town that was caught on fire and the devastating fire in Paradise. I hope that you will continue to make changes to protect your investment. Keep up the good work.

    In the year 2000 we had a bad fire here around Los Alamos, NM. It scared the hell out of me it came so close to the house that I couldn’t hold my tears back. We were blessed because the wind changed course and headed north. You’re very lucky. I truly know what that feels like. As natural disasters go fire is at the top of my list. Glad you made it through.
    We had a canyon here on the Rez it wiped it out and still to this day we can’t go up and camp or fish. I don’t think I’ll be alive to see it open again. Blessings to you and your family 💜

    I have lived in wildfire country for most of my 65 years. Some thoughts...I know you guys have a full plate already, but you might set up your own water source for fire...a large tank strategically located and buried to keep it safe...then buy a gas powered pump to pull water for fire fighting around the house/property. I have a such a set up, a concrete 1500 gallon septic tank in the ground and a Honda powered trash pump, 150 ft of one inch fire hose. Create go bags for fire season having your important paperwork in them, any critical meds, etc. Keep on top of the fuel situation around the house.
    Also...I have seen several gun safes fail in fires in our area...keep the top of the safe clear, and read the fine print on what it will and won't do.
    Best of luck guys. Fire is a scary deal.

    I am so sorry to hear about your fire and super thankful it isnt near you at this time!! I have been in that exact situation 2 years after we bought our dream home in the country and had a lightning strick 2 miles from house that almost took out our new home and land( within 50 yards with 3 pumper truck in and around our house from the whole state of Oklahoma) Those hot spotters and firefighters as so FREAKIN AWESOME i cant even tell you! We had time to load up lots of trucks trailers and important stuff for us and had like a full mile long of vehicles of trucks and trailers parked for when it got so hot we had to leave!! GOD BLESSED US AND SPARED US from this disaster!!! Not to mention a Church camp on the mountain behind me and across the road from me and they and a couple farmers took care of all the fire crews!!!!!!!!!I have some scary ass pictures/videos caught on my deer cams of the fires!! EPIC,,,, PLEASE BE SAFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and may GOD BLESS YOU ALSO!!!

    Very glad that you and your community are safe. A couple of episodes back I made mention that you were doing a great job for the safety of your home after you had cleared it and put stones down, that that was another barrier to protect your home. You did all that at the right time. If the fire department gave you further advice toward asset protection, please take that on board also. In regards to the siding I think Jen is on the right track, just put a brad nail in it but then cover it with silicone, then the hole is covered. But I'm sure someone will disagree with that 😅. Stay aware, stay safe.

    On those top pieces of siding...water not as big an issue with the way you used j-channel...wind could be...if it doesn't take siding down, you may get a flutter noise ...I have always just used a minimal number of finish nails...as deep into j-channel and top of last piece of siding...place looks great and glad you and yours are safe

    Try putting small battens up there where you are going to nail,it will keep it straight.just an idea.

    Great to see the fires have moved away. What’s the name of the mountain range at 23 minutes 39 seconds. It looks gorgeous. Stay safe.
