  • Sometimes life on a farm in Portugal brings us closer to the harsh realities of Mother Nature, and this week is one of those weeks when homesteading just feels a little bit hard. We welcomed our first clutch of chicks, but sadly it wasn't all good news, and there was a fair amount of heartache involved.
Here’s the link to the courgette bread recipe I used anoregoncottag...

Looking at over 40 years of having hens, and raising chicks, we learned that:
    * Bantam hens make better Mums (so we’d put the eggs from the other hens under them when they got broody)
    * separating Mama hen and the chicks from the rest of the coop worked a lot better (the babies didn’t get harassed as much. When they were a few weeks old we’d let them out to scratch free range with the others)
*the breed “Sussex” hens were clumsy as Mums, and would often squash/stand on their babies as they hatched and during first week or so, leaving us with less babies.

Had a lot of hens too. And there are good moms and there are bad moms. Like with humans. And yes one breed is better than the other. But don't touch the little o es when they are just hatched and put them separately... always did that. And here when it was still a bit chill they got themselves in one part of the box a heat lamp. (Bx is 2 by 2 meter. And I totally agreed that you can put eggs from one hen under a other hen... 😂. They aren't even co fused...

Baby chicks have to be kept very warm until they have their feathers. I used to put a hot water bottle in the box until we bought a small heating pad. I also used mason jars wrapped in fabric after filling them with warm water. Splint the bad leg with small straight rods and keep it there until you are positive it is completely healed. Buy baby chicks feed. Put both water and food in small shallow dishes ( I used jar lids). There is LOADS of online information about raising chickens. My favourite is a lady from New Zealand

Sorry...also slice them thinly and use them instead of lasagna noodles to make lasagna. Sprinkle lightly with salt though and let them sit for maybe 30 minutes, press them in between hand towels or paper towels to remove the excess moisture that they put off so they won't add excessive liquid to your dish.

It eventually learnt to walk and keep up with my other two surviving ducklings......they would follow me in a line behind me all around the farm and I loved taking them swimming, they eventually made friends at the river and where released back in to nature when adults......it is a beautiful special happy memory helping and seeing the little duck survive and do well on her own in the end back in nature

With the Squash( croget) , grate them and freeze. You can use it for stew, bread, quiche , and as filler in casserole . Make ribbons, of the large ones to make lasagna noodles. If you have a dehydrator , dehydrate, and put in the food processor, to make flour!

I remember we had a cow that got paralyzed after giving birth. My dad had her in a lean to & hoped she would get up but she didn’t. He had to get a neighbor to put her out of her misery because he couldn’t do it. Dad wanted to be a vet but couldn’t pass chemistry so maybe that was a blessing in disguise. He would do lots of other vetting things with our animals but some things were too hard for him to do. Farm life can definitely be hard sometimes 😢

The weak rarely survive in the animal kingdom, it seems, and we all learn through experience. Thank you for trying to give the chick a chance to live. Crusoe was so tender in his handling of the chick. Tara, I enjoyed the baking session with your lovely little "helpers" and the bread and muffins really did look good. John, you are always so busy, but I love your tender heart, especially when you took time out from an important project to try to feed and comfort a helpless chick. The two of you are wonderful role modles for your boys and those around you. Thank you both so much.🌹

Hi, guys! Tara, we have made zucchini bread in my family for generations. You mentioned some savory variations, but I don't want you to forget the sweet ones! My sister likes to add cocoa powder to the batter for chocolate bread, and my kids love it with chocolate chips mixed in👍It's easy to be creative with it, with raisins and other fruits, and chopped nuts, too. So GOOD! And they usually freeze very well. Good job working with two toddlers and getting something edible out of it! So fun to watch them; loved baking with my littles, and now my grandkids! Love to all ❤❤🍞🐣🏡

Courgette bread is really good! You can even slice it up and freeze it for later. My daughter has made it lots of times (with Courgette and walnuts).
I also read that you can turn it into flour and use it for baking (it was used a lot in the UK during WWII).

Monster zucchinis have not beaten you Tara! Congratulations! I would love to taste your cooking with huge blobs of butter on top! Yum! As for the chicken challenge you did famously as any inexperienced (in handling such unique circumstances) human chicken parents may have done. We found making the burial part into a neat little ceremony sometimes helps if the children feel it as much as you did.
I remember a special little pet dog passing away. Terrible grief in one child. So we made a special funeral procession and dug the hole and did the honours with tears. A jet plane flew overhead at the end as a special sign of respect. In spite of much finishing to be done, thats life, I loved your super chicken yard neatly fenced, healthy fat chickens, the veges growing so fast, and the beautiful garden swathes around the buildings. The boys are so delightful! Congratulations all the way! 💖

So sorry to hear about your baby chick. We had a baby bunny a few weeks ago that couldn't walk and we tried to save it, but it passed away. We have a little spot in our ivy that we call the animal cemetery, where we put all the wild critters that don't make it, birds, mice, bunnies, so they can go back to Mother Earth. It's very hard when you want to help them, but sometimes it's out of our control. At least they get a lot of Love before crossing over. Looking forward to trying your zuchini bread recipe. two things to do if you have a dehydrator is to make courgette crisps or dried slices that can eventually go in soups etc, another thing to do is to freeze grated courgette to use for baking or cooking. I froze mine in small bags in the quantity needed for specific recipes, make sure to really squeeze the water out before using. feed some to the chickens and sell some at thr market if you can.
