Vinnie Rattolle Thanks Vinnie for posting this interview. Today's "progressives" are not liberals like Phil D. He was respectful when the Duke expressed his political views. I never liked Phil D. but this interview gave me a new appreciation for him.
This interview was also very informative about the Duke's acting career.
Great interview, enjoyed every minute of it!

@@TheInsaneChef You are so wrong .. Wayne was a moderate and wanted both parties to work together. You missed the whole point of his discussion on politics. You just had to make a dumb comment. The Duke said he supports the person who will work with the country, not the party .. whether it is Republican or Democrat .. pretty obvious. He said he voted probably 5 times each party. You just had to make a divisive statement didn't ya ..

@@mrg466 I'm not American, so I don't want to be presumptuous to decide whether JW was a racist or not.
But I've read he dropped some remarks on the playboy magazin in the early seventies that give a strong impression that maybe he was....!
But I leave it to the American public to argue about that.
What I want to say is, that I just can't understand, how anyone can call an actor, any actor at all, "a hero".
I mean, they don't run into burning houses to save little children from a gruesome death, do they ?!
They just say lines others have written and do- as- if earning a lot of money by it.
That doesn't mean I'm not thankful for their work as I enjoy much of it, and I admire many good actors for their artistry and the joy and inspiration their work provided for me and millions of movie enthusiasts.
So, admiration and thankfullness , yes !
But "hero ? No ! That's a number too big regarding an actor imho. !
That said I also enjoyed many of the movies of JW as many are real classics, and he really was a big presence on the silverscreen and had charisma! And by his naturalistic and minimalistic style he was also a great actor in his own way ( he may have been a racist or not...) .
Don Siegel , who was the director of his last movie, "The Shootist" ,
which was made around the time of this interview (and which JW is talking about) , once said it in an interview around the same time,
that JW would have been one of the most professional movie actors he ( Siegel) had ever worked with despite him ( Siegel ) not liking JW as a human being !

@@gunterangel You said it well, he was an actor, paid to say lines. Which many confuse with real life. I can care less about John's acting! My thing is,...what are you in real life? That's what counts! Sadly racist exist around this planet, America and beyond! But no one is born that way. To be racist, it's something one is taught. But what your taught, doesn't mean it's truth! I call someone friend, when they earned it, has nothing to do with their color. Glad my parents, never taught me to hate because of where someone from, nor because of skin color. Have a good day!

My family and I went on location for the movie The Cowboys. We met John Wayne and it was something none of us will ever forget. Our family of 8 was treated so well by John Wayne and we got to see all the school kids at the schoolhouse. When we pulled onto the ranch near Santa Fe where they were filming, we rode for a while and saw the ranch house. There was a mountain of a cowboy standing in the breeze way we could see his silhouette. We burst into screams of joy as we rode up to the ranch house. It was not John Wayne but was his stuntman. It was great. We loved it.

This was a real treat to watch. John Wayne was respected because of who he was on and off screen. And the older he got the more of himself came out in his movies. He was a respectable man who loved his country. He didn't shy away from his politics in public or on TV and the media did not control him. His opinions (7:35) on the politicians building themselves up for the love of money, not the country, is the biggest problem we have in our government today.

Oh really? Try listening to his comments earlier in the interview - he was married to at least TWO Mexican women and has kids that are half-Mexican! Does that sound like a racist to you! In fact, he's a CLASSIC (authentic) LIBERAL, he said it himself! Try listening. He's not a phoney liberal like the extreme-left Marxists of today pretend to be!... Also, when he was shooting films like 'The Searchers' Wayne was extremely kind and generous to the Navajo people of the region and helped them to participate in the film production. Ford and Wayne were some of the first film-makers to use authentic Native Americans to perform in the movies, unlike tbe typical Caucasian actors in face paint and black wigs used for many years.
Stop spreading Marxist propaganda lies about people who have more integrity in their little finger than the lying,
American-hating, leftists have in their entire flock of human vultures.

I had a place in Newport Beach on Lido Island which is part on Newport. John Wayne has his house 3 doors down and also has his PT boat on a lift back of his house. Newport harbor is where both houses were. One night my brother and I walked down the beach to where John’s PT Boat was. The big light comes on and Mr Wayne is yelling who’s there. My brother talks to him don’t know what he said but we are invited into his home for a drink. I had a scotch and water given to me by this great man great actor an American legend. My brother later told me that he mentioned his son Pat and what his job was. The Duke was very nice and we sat and talked for about two hours. It just so happened my dad managed the famous Ambassador hotel where we lived from 1953 to 1956. Dad also knew John because when my mom died at 39 years of age in 1953 I was 13. But dad in 1954 knew John Wayne because dad was dating Estilita who was the Latino girl in Rio Bravo. She made many movies with Roy Rogers there’s more lol but I’ll get off here

Capable of admitting his faults and dedicated to improving himself. John was a realist with ideals. Having a Bible is one thing. Reading it is another! Jehovah's witnesses walk around with a Bible and do not have the foggiest idea who Jesus is! Keep in mind that the last woman in John Wayne's life was Pat Stacey whom he was SHACKING UP with. God is not a respecter of so called great movie stars. Jesus once said 'woe to those that are praised by the crowds. A Christian man does not darken the door of a den of thieves like the oscar awards or Emmy's . The fact that he ran with the Hollywood crowd says a lot about your character! John Wayne was not a christian Stephen. He even had a catholic priest come in to his hospital room the day before he died so that he could TIP his hat to a God that he never knew or had fellowship with! When a person kneels before Christ on Judgement day Jesus Christ is not going to be impressed with who was great in the eyes of the pagan world!

Permanently damaged my father’s eyes. My father was in hospital for surgery on his eyes and John Wayne took time off to spend time in the hospital with my father everyday he was there and paid all his bills for the surgery and hospital stay, he didn’t have to, he insisted. Blows my mind 43 yrs since this airing the entire audience has passed except for a few along with John Wayne , only one living Phil . I'll never forget when Barbara Walters, did the last interview and spoke of death John Wayne, replied he feared death and surely wasn't looking forward to it. I truly pray his soul is at peace , I believe he loved life so much that he wanted to live forever ! John Wayne, passed in 1979 three yrs. after this interview hard to believe he looks so healthy here ! This is a treasure so glad VCR"s worked back in the day and you had been able to catch this priceless interview look at the Dukes mustache the beginning of those staches , LOL I pray they never come back! Ps When he speaks of never shooting a man in his flims it's true there's a interview with Clint Eastwood, and he speaks of John Wayne, refusing to shoot the actor in his back for the movie. True story ! Blessings 💜

@@Slipmahoney21 The problem with conservatives complaining about liberals is that the former has no credibility to convince the latter. I don't pick and choose between what's true and false depending on my interests. Most people have no such notion. This post below explains my position on this:
      . . .
I'm pasting the following in every one of these RVAT videos I watch -- because America's decline is rooted in the decades of dishonesty and systematic self-delusion that created the conditions for Trump's rise. You're not gonna solve that simply by booting him out of office in November. In 1805 John Adams wrote the following in a letter to Benjamin Rush, a friend and fellow signer of the Declaration of Independence:
“Our electioneering racers have started for the prize. Such a whipping and spurring and huzzaing! Oh what rare sport it will be! Through thick and thin, through mire and dirt, through bogs and fens and sloughs, dashing and splashing and crying out, the devil take the hindmost. How long will it be possible that honor, truth, or virtue should be respected among a people who are engaged in such a quick and perpetual succession of such profligate collisions and conflicts?”
      That question has been answered.
      =====================================
"I am somebody who was raised to believe that character and moral integrity
count, especially in our leaders. . . . I voted Republican up and down the line, but then 2016 happened." . . .
It didn't just "happen" -- you, your parents, and grandparents had a role in creating the conditions for this abomination of a human being to become president. There's more to "character and moral integrity
" than failing to be faithful to your wife -- ya know, like manufacturing a war while banking on blind support from people who went batshit crazy after 9/11. 100% of the "everybody believed Iraq had WMD" crowd couldn't write a sound argument on the subject to save their lives (and have not a clue who "everybody" is). It was just a meaningless slogan, like "armed only with Skittles" for the Left. Jesus, you people act like you have no idea how to process any information that conflicts with your calcified conclusions. Somebody shoveled some shit and you bought it.
So spare me your integrity-come-lately convictions -- for having the "courage" to not support one of the most despicable and utterly inept individuals to ever live. That's a hell of a high bar you've got there! So while everyone else heaps praise upon you, I wanna know where you've been for the last 20 years and beyond.
Where do you think all this "Trump hater" and "TDS" crap came from? "Bush hater," "Bush basher," "Bush Derangement Syndrome" ring a bell? My aim isn't to shame you -- it's for you acknowledge that you bear some responsibility for America going totally off the rails in its worship of the wildly undeserving. In one form or another, inevitably there are consequences for convictions unguided by conscience -- and we're seeing that play out every single day.
And for the liberal crowd on here -- you and your ridiculous "woke" ways have given Republicans mountains of ammunition over the years (to frame the narrative that you walk right into every time). In light of recent events, clearly you haven't learned a damn thing.
The Right is not always wrong -- and when they make sense and speak the truth, you should listen to them -- even if they refuse to show you the same courtesy.
A piece I wrote weeks ago:
      ================================================
I don’t do slogans, so to me, “Black Lives Matter” is just as empty as its comeback cousin. Blunt instruments for change are just too ham-handed for my taste. Rather than endlessly debate catch phrases, monuments, and movements-I’m far more interested in considering the underlying merit in a point of view. While everyone else spins their wheels on who’s right, I define what I see by factoring for what’s true (isolating and correlating along the way). When it comes to ascertaining the truth, I don’t care what your cause is, who’s in the White House, who controls Congress or the courts. I learned early on in life that what you want gets in the way of what you see.

Does the Democratic Party have a history of manipulating racially-charged incidents? Undeniably! Has the left-leaning side of the cable clans increasingly accommodated Democrats over the years? Without question! Can you conclude what happened to Trayvon and Michael Brown with the same certainty as the death of George Floyd? No way-but ya did, and in lickety-split fashion.

Zimmerman’s brother perfectly put it: “He had the greater hand in his own demise.” To an apologist, he had no hand at all-a mindset that violates the rules of reality. If you’re pulled over by the police and you cop an attitude, you’re askin’ for trouble. And right on cue, “He was a wannabe cop and was told not to follow him!” So, you want to skip right over what transpired and go right to “gunned down”-because he was armed and didn’t follow instructions? Wishful thinking is not an argument-not to mention the fact that preforming calcified conclusions is prejudice by definition.

The Left seeks to eradicate racism while refusing to recognize how they fuel it. The second they painted Trayvon as a child, they contaminated their judgment. The cops made an honest mistake in calling his watermelon drink “iced tea” (simply because of the brand). That the media advocates reported it the same way at first is understandable. That they never corrected it is unforgivable. To conform to fact, we must agree that it was watermelon and consider what it means: Maybe nothing, maybe everything. But you pollute the debate when you won’t even acknowledge the irrefutable. Worse than that-you poison your purpose.

You’d think that a party that prides itself on intellectualism would examine the efficacy of their efforts. Perhaps even try some predictive analysis:

      ************

Hmm, we’ve got the first black president in the White House and we’re marching to Black Lives Matter. That might be overplaying our hand and have unintended consequences. Same goes for the removal of monuments-do we really want to infuriate the opposition for fleeting gain? Maybe the awe-inspiring artistry of historical figures will spark a sense of wonder in the youth. Perhaps they’ll read the plaque and probe for more. Whatever their findings, isn’t there great value in that process of discovery? Wouldn’t it be better if we just let people make up their own minds about whether problematic pieces embody hate or heritage? And even if the monuments could magically vanish from the face of the Earth, would that really solve anything? On top of all that, it seems that the more sensitive we try to be, the more hypersensitive our culture has become. That wasn’t our aim.

We elected a sophisticated guy-shouldn’t we seek change in a bold and sophisticated manner? After all, wasn’t that the point of his presidency? Wouldn’t we be more successful in solving problems if we took an honest look at the different dimensions within them? Instead of putting Kaepernick on a pedestal for telling us what we wanna hear, maybe we should be inspired by Kobe who told us what we don’t:

"I won't react to something just because I'm supposed to, because I'm an African-American. That argument doesn't make any sense to me. So we want to advance as a society and a culture, but, say, if something happens to an African-American, we immediately come to his defense? Yet you want to talk about how far we've progressed as a society? Well, then don't jump to somebody's defense just because they're African-American."

      ************

For immovable conservatives who find comfort in that quote-take a good look in the mirror, because defending the indefensible is your M.O. What we’re seeing today was partly built on a foundation of manufactured outrage (which applies to most controversial issues in America over the last 30 years). Decades of dishonesty in the Gutter Games of Government is not a nation on a path to greatness. I wrote this piece before I came across the accompanying video. I was blown away by these words: “Anti-racism, as currently configured-has gone a long way from what used to be considered intelligent and sincere civil rights activism. Today it's a religion.”

      th-cam.com/video/mT2rlJe9cuU/w-d-xo.html

“I know that most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives.”
