There is no more fitting final film roll that any actor ever had than John Wayne had with The Shoitist. He played many sharpshooters in his many westerns throughout the years. Then he got cancer in real life. So his final roll as an old gunfighter who gets diagnosed with cancer was absolutely perfect. It's like Hollywood made a film about the end of his life. Almost better than if it were a documentary. John Wayne was my pop's favorite actor. I can never watch one of his pictures without thinking of him.
This is great. No matter how slow he talks, we hang on his every word. Legend.
He had one lung.

The interviewer is right - John Wayne deserved at least a nomination for “The Shootist.” I would have given him the Oscar! Great film, great cast!
for whatever reason com,edies, musicals, westerns, adventure pics, film noir tended to be ignored in favor of dramas.

John Wayne is a name that has been revered for ages he’s a man’s man that people look up to. A good actor we love his movies and style he comes off tough but I think he was a kitty at at heart. R I P John you did good.

My favorite Wayne movie was Chisum. The stampede ending has always been fermented in my mind as the best western ending of all time.
Watching John Wayne movies is one of the most vivid memories I have of spending time with my Dad when I was young. Stands up as an example of how to be a man and the good guy. My kids dont know who he is. I've often thought it should be on the curriculum in schools😁

Im in my 60’s retired, & 8yrs ago I introduced one of my grandbabys to john Wayne movies. He’s 11 now & adores him.
I am old enough to remember a lot of his early films. He had a magnificent presence then and still does today! “That’s right pilgrim” Rest In Peace.

JW was constantly underrated because he was so at ease in his roles. Being Number 1 box office star in the late 40s 50s and part of the 60s certainly was a huge achievement rarely matched by other movie stars.
This interview reflects his complete understanding of the movie business and his role in it.
Sadly he was never to make another film, passing away only 3 years after this interview at the age of seventy two.
Intelligent interviews like this just show that stars like JW happily opened up and discussed the industry

Nice to see The Duke sit down, but one can see his health challenges. While sad I’m also glad to see this footage.
He was a far better actor then some that have gotten the award in the last 30 years. Hollywood has not been good for many years.
John Wayne should have won an academy award for The shootist many of my friends who are big fans of John Wayne and fans of vintage movies from the Golden age of Hollywood say that that was probably John Wayne's best performance of his career. Thanks for posting stay well be safe
John Wayne should've won the Oscar for The Searchers, which in my view, was his best. But yes, a close second, it was fitting he should've won another Oscar for The Shootist

This is one reason why we would sit around a black and white TV screen 16 inches accross, while adjusting the rabbit ears to get a clear picture. It was worth watching.

There is nothing more America than a John Wayne Movie. The man is the epitome of what it is to be American. He died before I was born by 10 days. But he will always be my favorite actor.

Such an humble man, I grew up watching John Wayne movies, he wasn't only one the best actor's to grace the screen he was a great American.

So much had been said about John Wayne by the time this interview was conducted, that it seemed almost pointless to say any more. He had heard it all by then and he was humble. I sure do miss him though. He just knew how to sit a saddle, what to say when something needed saying and how to create characters so memorable, that they stand out among the very best.
Westerns were John Wayne's favorite, but other characters were equally as fun for him to create. The Quiet Man comes to mind. Which, if I remember correctly was his favorite movie he ever made. He loved Maureen O'Hara dearly. She adored him. They had chemistry on screen that was unmistakable and believable.
In my personal opinion, John Wayne is the finest actor ever. He made more movies verses any other actor/ actress. Though, he'd be the first to say, had it not been for so many great actors in those movies, he might not have been so popular throughout the years. He was and shall always be....the real deal. God Rest his soul.🌺

I thought I’d seen every TH-cam clip on the Duke until I saw this one. Thanks for sharing it here. Another great clip of JW with some interesting dialogue on a few of the directors he worked with over the years.
Fortunate to meet the big man in Bracketville,Texas when I was still a teenager back in the early seventies..never met a more iconic figure.
John Wayne was a "father figure", who made movies. The movie ; "Cowboys", I can imagine, in a way personified the Duke. I imagine that every male child actor that worked with him. wanted to be him.
I miss John Wayne! He was the most under-rated actor there was. Yes, you knew you were getting "John Wayne" but damn, he could act with the best of them. The Shootist was a great film and a great one for the Duke to go out on.

Great interview! I liked the way he described the different styles of directing between John Ford and Howard Hawks. It was very interesting.

Interesting to hear the Duke talk about the difference between Ford & Hawks. I love how Orson Welles compared the two..." Ford is great poetry...Hawks is great prose".
The Duke was a man of his times and he wasn't bashful nor apologetic for it. The recent (last 10 years) to vilify such men and people for that matter on today's screwed up social bug-a-boos is stupid. We are all flawed in some way and have our own ways of looking at things including opinions others do not share. He was no different than ANYONE else. Just famous.

June 11, 2022. Duke passed away 43 years ago today. Exactly 10 years before his death, True Grit debuted in the theatres June 11, 1969.

@@TheMiketyson9 It is true that he was unfair to one race but he was very vocal and monetarily supportive of Indians. It goes to show the imperfections we all have. When using current standards and ideals to historical figures we can always see where there should be improvement.
Orson Welles said this dude had the best manners of anyone he's ever met and it shows here.
He may have been racist, or insensitive who knows, but he seems to have garnered much respect and affection through his behavior regardless. I also believe it may he wrong to judge a man who can't defend himself

John Wayne was a man's man of his day. Never politically correct, which didden even exist during his time.
He spoke his truth and did it honestly. He was a hard but very fair man.
He was real.
He was a gigantic icon of his day. And is known worldwide
And after his death about 45 plus years ago, he is just starting to fade away into history..
Fantastic actor. He could make you believe what he said.
The children in the Cowboys 🤠 said many great things about him as children and later as adults and some now in their 60s in up in age.
They still say the same things about him to this day.
Today, people apply today's standards of political correctness and not the standards of his day.
In 50 years from now, people will judge us by their standards and not ours today.
Oftentimes, the people of Today put our standards upon the pilgrims of the late 1500s forward and of our nation's founding ...
But it's not fair in a politically correct world to acknowledge each generation sets its own standards of their day... and so forth and so on.
So what happened in 2000 doesn't apply but in a little part today and was but 24 years ago.
Jump back 60 years ago to Kennedy and MLK, Malcolm X, black Panthers, and KKK.
The standards of their time don't fit in today's standards.
To be fair, honest, and fully transparent. Anyone has to be judged by the standards of their day.
Otherwise, it's very skewed at best to polar opposites .
In 2050, people will say very unkindly things about us, and their outlook on history will be very different from ours in today's times.
So think about that before you judge people of the past.

I would have loved to have met him. He got on very well with Richard Widmark and so I'd like to think that John Wayne wouldn't have fallen out with me! An interesting man. My personal favourite was "The Searchers" and he should have gotten an accolade for that, in my opinion.

And soon after this interview Western Films became more rare each year.
Totally right ! The main reason was
just one year after John Waynes last movie "The Shootist" was released,
"Star Wars" changed everything.
It started the sci-fi- and special- effects- craze that is still in overdrive today since 1977.
From this point on westerns would become old-fashioned and hopelessly outdated , at least in the eyes of the youth , the main movie goers, and only big-budget-blockbusters would make it big at the box-office.
And sadly it's quite probable ,
that if John Wayne had lived some ten years longer thru the eighties either he'd had completely retired from the movies or he'd had reduced his movie career to occasional guest-star appearences in some of the big-budget TV- mini-series typical of that time period, "The Blue and the Grey" for instance.
Say what you want of my hero. He was an American.

The main differences between John Ford & Howard Hawks were that Hawks had none of Ford's sentimentality, nor did he indulge in the broad humor that Ford often indulged in. Ford would have never been comfortable with the kind of overlapping fast-paced dialogue Hawks employed in His Girl Friday. Hawks wouldn't have been terribly adept with the material in The Informer, The Long Voyage Home or The Grapes of Wrath. Imagine Ford making To Have & Have Not, & imagine Hawks making The Quiet Man. Ford didn't have the instinct for the nuances of male/female relationships that Hawks had. It's also interesting to consider how Hawks and Ford often used the same actors. Walter Brennan loved working for Hawks; he despised Ford. One aspect of film making that Hawks and Ford both shared was a preference for keeping the camera at eye level.
I'll take ten minutes of John Wayne over all the CGI comic book superhero movies ever made.
