I saw Ali in person once in the early evening when I was going to my car after classes in Detroit. I saw a big bus that said Cassius Clay and he was in the headlines because the Liston fight was coming up. The bus was in front of a gym called The Big D, I think, and I paid $1 or $2 to see him spar with Wild Bill Cody who was big and strong and resembled Liston. He was so fast it looked like it was staged and Wild Bill was deliberately moving slow. I also saw George Chuvalo spar and he looked good.

Brilliant interview with a lot of gems. It’s inspired me to watch the Farrakhan interview again on the Donahue show which wasn’t too distant from this one.
He had his flaws like everyone but despite that he was the greatest to a lot of us...still. The hardest part to take is how he took such a pounding on his comeback through his 30s and lost his ability to express himself verbally. The first signs were apparent in this show. He was way more than a great boxer.
