Really sorry you had this experience but you should not be surprised as the place where you got it from was not really an ideal place for a food adventure. I'm a Filipino and I steer clear of street carts that looks suspect. My brother contracted hepatitis because he loved eating food from stalls like this. It is a BIG NO. Locals avoid carts like these like the plague unless you really don't have anything else to eat. Anyhow, grilling dried squid is not good to start with, It is already hard as cardboard and chewy and grilling it without any sauces does not make it any better. It is too stringy, tough and literally feels like you're eating a piece of tree bark that tastes of rotten fish. Besides, the more you cook squid the more it gets leathery. It is best deep fried eaten with garlic rice, usually in accompaniment with fried egg for breakfast. Of course it is fishy. It comes from the sea! The funk is further enhanced by the process of fermentation (salting and drying under the sun). It is an acquired taste. Either you like it or you don't. I personally hate it grilled. Next time, eat it at a proper restaurant. Try the fresh squid which is spatchcocked to resemble a butterfly, coated with flour before being deep fried to crispiness. Or a fresh one (not dried) stuffed with tomatoes and onions then grilled over charcoal. NOW THAT, is something worth trying. Not this. And don't get me started with the communal vinegar dip to be shared with strangers. Nope.
