Engelbert Humperdinck's real name was Arnold George Dorsey. He started his singing career as Gerry Dorsey in the late 50's but changed his name to Engelbert Humperdinck in the 60's. The original Engelbert Humperdinck was a German composer, most famous for his opera Hansel and Gretel. 🙂

I'm laughing so hard, but in a good way!!! Amazing swooning, I totally agree!!! I would never have thought that Jay world like this, I think he's more of a romantic at heart than he lets on. Engelbert is definitely an icon, he even appeared as the UK entry for the UK not too many years ago, it didn't go well, but I think for more political reasons than his singing, and that I think it was seen as an attempt to just get votes by putting forward someone famous in the music world who had had success across Europe in the past. Whatever the reason it backfired. He's still a legend though and so glad you liked this, it made me smile.

A classic song recorded by well over 100 artists, "Release Me (and Let Me Love Again)" dates back to the late '40s, and has a convoluted history. It was written by Eddie Miller and two of his bandmembers: guitarists Bobby Gene Yount and Dub Williams. Miller fronted an act called Eddie Miller and his Oklahomans, which recorded the first version of this song in either 1949 or 1950.

I saw him in concert in the late '80s. In the middle of the show, he put on a white tee shirt. He asked all the women to put on some lip stick and come up and kiss the front of his shirt! 😅 I tell you, young and old ladies all came up and kissed his shirt. When it was all done, there were all these lip prints all over the front of Engelbert's shirt!! So funny and almost surreal! My girlfriend, now wife, thought it was a bit gross 😂. He also did a lot of impressions and comedy. Great show!

The name was the idea of his manager to get him noticed. Gerry Dorsey wasn't cutting it even though the voice was always there. Had his own show on tv in the UK. Huge star in the 1960s.

This was his signature song, along with "Am I That Easy to Forget", so smooth and beautiful! Such a wonderful voice and delivery. "Blue Spanish Eyes" and "There Goes My Everything" are gorgeous and along the same lines but anything by him is flawless. "Ten Guitars" is upbeat but the vocals are just as awesome!

The video might have said 1989, but Engelbert first hit with it in the late 60's. He had a massive hit with "After the Lovin" in the late 70s. You will really like that one.

"After the Lovin" might be his most famous song (certainly up there). "Spanish Eyes"; "My World"; "This is My Song"; "How to Win Your Love"; "The Way It Used to Be"; "Quando, Quando, Quando"' "Love Can Fly"; "Marry Me"; "True" and so many others are worth checking out. Quite a deep rabbit hole.

What a song! What a voice! This song was so, so popular. Engel is German for angel. Engelbert Humperdinck is a real angel. I saw him commenting on your reaction to his other song "A Man Without Love" a few months ago! Another suggestion from the 70s, something angel related: "Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel" by Tavares. No crooner song. It is a disco/soul song.
