I married my wife June 8, 1974 . TODAY is our 49th anniversary. We got married 3 Days after I got home from Viet Nam. We immediately got in our newly purchased 1969 Ford 500 for $900.00 and drove from our childhood homes in NYC across the country to San Fransico. No dog yet...😊. We never did settle in one place. Always picking up and moving around the country. We have moved around and been through every state in the USA and much of Canada and Mexico. Just traveling , working, and enjoying life. We are both 70 and recently settled and bought a farm house, have a big garden , two wonderful sons, their wives and our grandson.
    Would not change one minute.

To Rob, the context to this song has a lot to do with the era in which it was made. The hippie, free-love movement along with Woodstock was fresh in the countries conscience even though it was beginning to fade. So, a song about living poor but happy was a confirmation of the times. Love how you two jump off the screen and provoke me and others to smile in such a folksy, welcome and accepting way in your presence.

This song kind of reminds me of a soft rock version of “Sloop John B”. 1970-1975 was a mixed bag of music: bubblegum pop, early funk, glam rock, singer-songwriter acoustic guitar songs, early metal which later would be considered hard rock, novelty hits, and love songs. This song fits in with those times. It has a relaxing, summer vibe to it.

I'm so glad you reacted to this! This is one of my and my wife theme songs. She nicknamed our beloved dog Otto "Boo" without ever having heard this song. The first time I played it for her, she was over the moon - we have always love road trips, and we logged many many miles as me and her and a dog named Boo. Sadly, we lost our beloved Boo last year to cancer - he was gone way too young, just a month shy of his eighth birthday. But that's enough sadness - you should really check out our other theme song, which is really more like our mission statement set to music: the late great hilarious Roger Miller, "You Can't Rollerskate In A Buffalo Herd" - but you can be happy if you've a mind to!

I fell in love in the 1970s. Love was special. We used to go parking on lovers lane and listen to the radio and talk for hours. I married and stayed married for 40 years, and he died. I eventually got over the grief and ran into my first love in the 7th grade, and now we are married.

I've always loved how this song starts in the south, goes through the midwest, and ends up on the west coast.

My husband and I met when I was 13 and he was 14, 1972.
We married in 1977 so this year will make 46 years of marriage.
The music of the 70s brings back so many memories. This song is one of those warm & fuzzy memories and going to the drive in movies then the drive in BBQ restaurant so we were in the car with the radio on a lot.
“Top Of The World” by The Carpenters was our song then and it is now.
    Thanks for making me smile.

I think this may have been their biggest hit. I remember hearing a cover of it on the cartoon show "The Brady Kids" which came on Saturday mornings. The kids sang some original songs but some covers to and that was one of them. The only other Lobo song I know is "I'd Love You To Want Me".

Lobo recalls: "I was working on several songs, including a tune about traveling around the country with this girl, and I was trying to rhyme 'you and me.' Now 'me and you' would have been easier, but I was trying to do it with proper grammar. I couldn’t find anything to rhyme that fit what I wanted to say in the song. Finally, after I got back home to Florida, I decided to turn the phrase around to 'me and you.' I was thinking about it, sitting in a room that had a big sliding glass door overlooking the back yard. My big German Shepherd dog: Boo, came running around the corner and looked in at me. I said: 'Well, now, that’s kinda freaky. How about putting 'a dog named Boo’ into the song?” That’s literally how it came about. All of a sudden the song really started coming together. I hadn’t been to any of the places mentioned in the song except Georgia, but I just kept putting in places that sounded far away like Minneapolis and L.A.

I met Mrs. Rick on the tarmac at Kadena AFB Okinawa Japan in Sept. 1973 late at night. She was one of the first military women assigned to the Island after the DOD changed the regulations to allow them to serve there. I was a young sailor, and we were saying goodbye to a friend from our Bible study. She had just gotten off the plane and was walking towards the terminal with several other Navy women. We stopped them and asked them if they were going to our base. We helped get their luggage and arranged transportation with the duty officer for them. Five months later I beat the odds of about 10,000 men for every woman, and we were the second Navy couple to get married on the Island. We would have been first but she dislocated her knee and didn't want to walk the aisle in a leg cast. We'll be celebrating our 50th in seven months.

My wife and I met in the early 70’s in high school. We got married after I graduated college in the mid 70’s. This song takes me back to those times like no other. Amber really understands the times well. She was born 30 to late. I even think Jay would have thrived in the 70’s. Oh, by the my wife are still married 45 years later.

I love Lobo! A lot of great songs from him, and this was perhaps his most enduring song. He had one that charted higher ('I'd Love You to Want Me"), but I think this has been played more over the years. In a way, that's kind of funny, because the song is so much a story of its time. Others are more timeless in the lyrics, but this is the one that people have clung to. It's all great stuff, though.
"Rings" is the one from Lobo you should listen to next. Musically, I think it holds up the best.

I've never heard this song before either. It is a sweet song. For some reason the title reminds me of the chorus from Hoyt Axton's song "Della and the Dealer".

Yay! This was one of my requests! I think for me, personally, this was one that I used to hear when my parents and I would take our Sunday drives. It brings me back to being a little kid, dozing in the backseat with my parents' voices and the music drifting around. Those were some of the sweetest memories of my life and this just puts me back in that place. Thank you!
Y'all ought to also check out Canned Heat's "Going Up the Country." It's got a very Woodstocky sort of vibe.
