And he died at 52 years old from a heart attack, because he smoked 80 cigarettes a day. He could have lived 20 or 30 years longer, it's hard to believe it's been 35 years since he died. He had the most beautiful voice and his music will live on forever. ❤

You also had TCB (Taking Care of Business), arguably the best backing anyone could hope for. James Burton on lead guitar, arguably the best guitarist of all time, Ronnie Tutt on drums and Glenn D. Harding on keyboard. TCB were the backing group to the stars. You knew you had made it to the big league when they backed you. Elvis, Roy Orbison, Emmylou Harris, Frank Sinatra, John Denver, Neil Diamond and many more all had TCB as their band for any live performances.

Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn talking about working with Orbison during the Traveling Wilburys sessions were repeatedly shocked at the ease of his vocals being laid down. Several times they thought he was just mouthing the words as a warm up, then on the playback, it was a flawless full power song on the tape.
    He was special for sure.

Orbison can hit octaves that other singers can only dream of. His last album before he died is called Mystery Girl. It really is a great album and all you need is to hear 2-3 notes and you know it's him. He's that great and that unique sounding. One of a kind!!

George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty!! What a band, what a singer and what a great album Mystery Girl indeed is!!! Shame he had a heart attack!! While there is absolutely debate on his octive range (some suggesting it is 5 or even as high as 7) the fact is, when reviewing his full catalog of recorded songs, the range is actually 2.8 octaves.
      Song with the LOWEST pitch:
That Lovin' You Feelin' Again (F#2-A4)
      Song with the HIGHEST pitch:
      Indian Wedding (C3-E5)

Roy Orbison claimed in interviews that the lyrics for this song came to him in a dream; he wrote the music once he woke up. Typical of many Orbison songs, it's a heartbreaker: asleep at night is the only time he can be with the one he loves, as when he wakes up, she's gone.

"Pretty Woman" is more famous. Also, "Cryin" is amazing. He did a version with kd lang, two voices that were made for each other. She did a solo version that I prefer. You need to react to her a lot more. "Constant Craving" is one of her absolute best. She has done some country songs in her own style. Check out "Trail of Broken Hearts" and "Pulling Back the Reins." She's also covered "Crazy" by Patsy Cline who was a big influence. Live or recorded, she's gold. As flawless a singer as I've ever heard.

"It's Over" is a real emotional tear jerker.. not requested that often for some strange reason. He has so many many memorable songs. To stand there and hardly move or open his mouth to produce that sound particularly when he was young was magical. Never will be another like Roy Kelton Orbison. You must be pretty good to upsatge the Beatles for them to ask him to "go home Yankee"!!. Of course it was all in good faith, but for the crowd in England to keep asking Roy Orbison for encores and forget about the Beatles who had been on before is pretty special. He was by all accounts a really lovely humble guy. Sure miss the "Big O"

The "wiggle" in his voice is called vibrato. I am a tenor (as was Orbison) and have done a tribute act to Roy. He was the inspiration for the term "one-of-a-kind!"

@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee That's true,. My point is that in the vast majority of cases, the version of a song we like and first heard is the studio version. Just by listening to a song over and over, sometimes for decades, the timing, accompaniment, voice inflections, is something we notice right away.

What an amazing evening. Can't even imagine being there. On piano was Glen D. Hardin, who had played piano for Buddy Holly as well as Elvis Presley. Lead guitarist James Burton, drummer Ronnie Tutt and bassist Jerry Scheff were also from Presley's group. Male background vocals and some guitars were provided by Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther and Steven Soles. Female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes and Bonnie Raitt. Not all the stars were on stage. Glimpses of celebrities in the audience can be seen, including Kris Kristofferson, Patrick Swayze, Billy Idol and Sandra Bernhard.

Personally, this is my all time favorite Roy Orbison song. Not only does he show his incredible range, but he also revolutionizing the structure of the song. There's no regular chorus, or refrain. His voice is just constantly rising. To be fair, as wonderful as his voice is in this video, its even more amazing as a younger man. Magical.

His Black & White Night, it was an awesome concert! He sadly passed away a little over a year later with a heart attack. Roy Orbison is I C O N I C!!!
Note all of the other artists playing with him on this song and others in this concert: Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, KD Lang and so many other that all admired Roy and that his music touched!
He was such a humble man that even up to the end wasn’t sure he was very good! He is truly missed!

This is from the Black and White Night, live from 1987. My favorite songs Roy Orbison sang that evening are “The Comedians” written by Elvis Costello, who plays the guitar in the band behind him, and “Running Scared”. That must have been a great night! Both for the audience and for the artists themselves. The respect is written all over their faces.
