  • Andre Jolivet (1905--1974): Symphony No. 2
Detroit Symphony Orchestra, André Jolivet, conductor
    Ford Auditorium, Detroit, Michigan, November 10 - 12, 1960
André Jolivet was a French composer known for his devotion to French culture and musical thought. Jolivet's music draws on his interest in acoustics and atonality as well as both ancient and modern influences in music, particularly on instruments used in ancient times. He composed in a wide variety of forms for many different types of ensembles. (Source: Wikipedia)
Jolivet composed three symphonies, 1 and 3 being available elsewhere here on You Tube. His Symphony No. 2 was composed in 1959.

The symphonies of Jolaivet are not by far the most known part of his work. This 2° symphony is severe, strictly organized, using the peculiar melodico-harmonic language of the composer in a rather harsh manner. The result is inded impressive. We have the feeling of a raw, primitive world and its strange beauty.

I've encountered little of Jolivet's music recently, but I recall fondly one or two Westminster LP's around 1960 of it that I liked for its' humor and orchestration, so thought I'd investigate it further. His musical idiom, or character at least, seems closest to that of the outrageous but totally likeable Silvestre Revueltas. This Symphony wasn't too easy to listen to; it was also outrageous, but not as redeemably fun-loving as his other works I'd heard. I still count it a privilege to have heard him conduct it in its' American premiere.

His symphony N°2 is generally speaking less known than other of his works. Thanks for this great chance to listen to it.

Thank you, mister Stevenson.

Other way around. Jolivet studied under Varese in the early 1930s before Varese's return to the US. Jolivet was Varese's only European student
