André Jolivet (pronounced: [ɑ̃'dʁe ʒoli've], 8 August 1905 - 20 December 1974) was a French composer. Known for his devotion to French culture and musical thought, Jolivet draws on his interest in acoustics and atonality, as well as both ancient and modern musical influences, particularly on instruments used in ancient times. He composed in a wide variety of forms for many different types of ensembles. Jolivet died in Paris in 1974 aged 69, leaving unfinished his opera Le Soldat inconnu. He was buried at Montmartre Cemetery next to the composer Henri Sauguet (Section 27, near the grave of Hector Berlioz). (Ref: Wikipedia)

Une très belle oeuvre. Beaucoup d'énergie et de liberté harmonique. Dommage que les symphonies de Jolivet ne soient pas plus jouées.

Magnificent symphony ! ! that despite its modernity manages to fit in a magical way to the beautiful painting above.

This is the first of the three symphonies by Jolivet. It is full of energy, like many of his scores. It gives an idea of his best in the 50's.

Une musique de grande qualité, mais difficile d'accès. Mieux vaut avoir exploré auparavant le culte des masses sonores de Varèse (difficile également), ou la 3ème symphonie de Roussel, qui a le même dynamisme dans un style plus familier.
