Very nice to have this performance. The version released on RCA in 1966 was conducted by Fine in August 1962, very shortly before his demise. This Munch performance was also a telecast (I read) and it helps that it is conducted by a professional conductor. Aaron Copland wrote," the Symphony represents the composer in his final phase and demonstrates a reaching out toward new and more adventurous experiences, in certain ways outside the frame of reference of Fine's music. It is strongly dramatic, almost operatic in gesture, with a restless and somewhat strained atmosphere that is part of its essential quality. It is saddening to think that Fine was not fated to carry through to full fruition the new directions clearly inherent in the best pages of the Symphony". Copland is as always very sober and judicious, even on behalf of a good friend. The best works of Fine I think are the Notturno and the Serious Song.

Are you sure it isn't Leinsdorf?
