The show is an embarrassment. It would have done better to make up its own names and an original universe. Tolkien fans may have enjoyed it MORE as a tacky knock-off.
It would then be simply embarrassing, not embarassing and offensive at the same time.
We could have had some fun with it that way, but no. They have to pee right into our coffee.
It's just not good. Destroying the lore just adds insult to injury.
@frogman, l mostly agree with you. It was a terrible idea to call this a Tolkien adaptation without making it a Tolkien adaptation 😉 lt would at least have eliminated most of the hate watchers. However, l think that this would not have helped the show a lot. Even without the Tolkien factor it would've been a boring and ill conceived show with terrible pacing and awful dialogues. I am a Tolkien fan, but not a fanatic one. And the character of ROP which l liked best, is an original character: Adar! He was very good in the first season. If the rest of the show would have been well made and interesting, l would have continued to watch it. But it's simply contrived and mostly boring!

It's wild they spent all that money, but cheaped out on hiring writters.

With DEI, skin color was more important than talent. They hired non-White writers not because they could write, but because they were non-White.

@@VoicyZA No, he doesn't have to "show receipts". There are reasonable grounds for making such a claim, given (i) the consistently poor quality of writing and acting on display, and (ii) the showrunners' and other key persons' obsession with inclusivity. Its not unreasonable to think there is a connection.
And, there is an easy way to refute - just turn out some quality product. But ROP is abysmally bad.
The problem is they don't know how to tell a coherent story much less a good one. None of these show runners have written anything of merit. McKay and Payne have zero noteworthy writing credits to their name. This is the ultimate example of "fake it until you make it". They didn't come here from a directing background, a screenwriting or producing background, they literally need background checks to figure out how they got here.
The story is that they had a "connection" that got them the gig. :/
Sheer hubris. They could have painted by numbers, checked boxes, and the throngs of Tolkien fans would have made the show a hit even if it were slightly mid, but stayed true to Tolkien's lore and themes
Instead, they bent the lore out of shape and insulted and ridiculed Tolkien fans, gaslighted them by saying Tolkien would have wanted this, and then when that didn’t work called the Tolkien fans patently evil. They turned the guaranteed flag bearers for this show into torch and pitchfork carriers.
And the problem with hate watching it is that it's boring for long stretches, so instead of hate you have, apathy. Which is far worse.
The most hilarious thing too is in their mind 1000000% every single “hater” of the show is a straight white male. They are willfully ignorant of how widely consumed Tolkiens work is and how pretty much all of Europe and US and all the diversity that comes with it has watched and fallen in love with that universe, many are Asian, black/African, Latino, and though a majority are probably men I know PLENTY of women who also love it. Like they pandered to politics so badly that when they made a full circle with what they see as virtuous everyone including the moves saw that it didn’t make any sense ON TOP of not being the same virtues that Tolkien instilled in his writings!
At the start in 2017 our expectations as Tolkien fans were high I assume - all this huge money, Tom Shippey at the helm as lore-master, good writers with oscar nomination, J. Howe one of illustrators who co-worked with PJackson. All this were promising for at least decent mix of Jackson's estethic and GoT's intrigue show. Just a moment after Christopher Tolkien has died and left the Tolkien Estate (the "family trust" who cares for the copyrights to the books) to others Amazon just eliminated all this, and begun producing a soap-opera-ish RPG travesty of 2d age :( Even if the show was not much better than "the hobbit" (which actualy is a good adventure movie though not very good adaptation but at least it has logic narration and enlisting all important scenes like the ones with Smaug and with Gollum - and this was done classy way), or on the par with this movie, we still would be flag bearers (not pitchfork carriers) and - though complaining for this or that detail (like the color of elven hair or some king's robe) - we still would be liking this show, if the show was at least in more than 50% in tune with the books (of 2d age), but I m afraid it is not more than 5% in tune with the books, maybe 10% sometimes - during two Durins scenes. All these golden robes and golden lights and golden palaces can not hide the fact that its mediocre at best in ideas of writing, in acting, in cohesive narration, in mythological epicness, in consolidation of time, and of course in book lore. And most of action is very long-winded, the small things which can be showed in 20-30 minutes are going for 3-4 episodes (like the development of minor charachters), the important things which should have been given all season (like the creation of the Rings), are finished in 20 minutes :D
They are blowing waay too much money on things people dont want to watch and its coming back to bite them....thankfully. fans deserve better than shows being written for anybody but them

I find it fascinating that they are saying, “of course numbers are down from the opening season. They had an unprecedented first season of viewership.” No kidding! The first season attracted to viewers because it was Tolkien. But then these idiots proceeded to take a giant dump all over his work. No sincere Tolkien fan will ever watch this crap. They have managed to alienate their very core audience.

I think you've hit on one of the big problems with modernity: that now mediocrities think they're so clever
Season 1: "25 million viewers in just it's first day of availability in 2022."
Season 2: "40 million viewers globally in 11 days"
4 episodes aired in those 11 days. That averages 10 million per episode. That's 3.6 million per day. 🤦♂

The contract has a severance clause. If it’s cheaper to pay it off than complete all five seasons, then the show gets cancelled. I predicted this after season 1. There will be no season 3.

The show runners took the lazy way out: they jumped on the DEI band wagon hoping to get a free ride instead of doing the hard work needed to produce a quality production. Indeed, most of Hollywood is doing this. And they wonder why they keep failing...did they think we would'nt notice?

The main reason for my growing apathy towards not only this show but the state of other currently-mishandled franchises I once fully supported isn't actually the mostly-poor quality of recent content. Its the continuing modus operandi by people in charge and the media to label *everyone* who doesn't sing their praises Trolls or worse.

They really wrote a story that Tolkien never wrote. Actually they wrote a story that nobody with a functionning brain would have ever written.

The one time I thought the writers truly contributed something new occurred in Season 2, Episode 6 when Annatar tried to to sway King Durin and failed. That felt like real Tolkien. Sauron / Annatar could mislead the Dwarves, but not control them. This scene also explained how the Dwarves awoke the Balrog.
Nerd Cookies, The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives was higher on the ratings than Rings of Power. :P

If I could arrange a 700 million dollar budget to get paid seven figures to throw a low effort knock off together I'd swallow my pride and play along.

The implications of "top 5" is that the show could be in any of those slots for rankings. In reality it means it is 5th, because otherwise they would use "top 3" or "no 1".
This show should have never pretended to have anything to with Tolkiens writing.

I still think HotD is a great show. Yes, it deviates from and adds onto the source material, but it's a great tv show and often feels like ASoIaF. RoP suffers from being completely unrecognizable from Tolkein's work but could still be a good tv show in spite of that. The reason it's awful isn't only because it totally betrays its source material - it's a badly made piece of media in general.
Also, I've noticed that a lot of people who hated HotD think RoP is amazing. I think that kind of says something in itself.

The show is complete garbage. Waited my whole life to see the 2nd age on film and they don't follow the lore at all and basically destroy Tolkiens vision. This isn't Tolkien it's modern agenda bs.
It's just bad on all levels, acting, writing, everything about it. Every character including sauron make the dumbest decisions one after another. Nothing ever happens. 90 percent of the show is characters standing around arguing about things and not ever doing anything about it. Or the things they actually do are off screen. No sense of time. Can't tell it takes weeks for something to happen. It's like it's just a day when it actually took months. Or the opposite. What takes a day seems like a week. Elrond getting back to Lindon before the orc army getting to eregion is ridiculous. Durin goes back and forth from kazad dum to eregion multiple times but it seems like he's doing it so fast he's teleworking. Just horrible time management. Talking and talking and talking. It's so boring and again... it's a complete blasphemy of Tolkiens writing and lore. It deserves to be canceled. Period. If you're a true fan of lotr and Tolkiens works you'd feel the same. Horrible show in every way. Even the sets are small and unimpressive looking. Costumes look literally like cosplay. Every single thing is awful. I'm glad it's failing. Hopefully Amazon sells the rights to a platform that'll do it properly.
enjoy your based takes but re their perception of the showrunning as being an epic battle - I get it, I think they're utter morons too, hubris and incredible arrogance to think they could write the book Tolkien never wrote - but as a creative, working on the *biggest* fantasy IP in history with the *biggest* streaming budget in history, any one would view that as a historic undertaking and worthy of comparing to an epic battle, especially when you feel that you're up against a lot of naysayers wishing for your demise. They may be stupid but they're not off with imagining they're in an epic battle. They just have their place in it wrong, as villains always do. They're a couple of Orc captains leading a part of Sauron's force who've been given far too much resource and pampered into thinking they're a lot more capable than they actually are. They ARE in an epic battle and they DO hold hugely important roles. But they're about to be the middle-ground failures who lose the battle for Sauron by failing to identify Sam and Frodo (the themes and values that matter in Tolkien's writing) when they pass directly by them.

While they were not faithful to the source material they still entertained. That's the only difference.
Same with gladiator. So many things are not historically accurate, but it delivered a good story.
But I think gladiator 2 will fail there, after I've seen the trailers.

Gollum Video Game ist pretty bad, Shadows of Mordor is pretty bad, The Hobbit too, Jackson films too and the violations to the canon are awful in every adaptation mentioned, but only RoP has got an intense hate campaign by noisy people on Internet. 😂
