I sincerely believe that Canon's decision to lock out third party lens manufacturers will ultimately be their downfall. I say this having used and loved their cameras for over twenty years. Sony really has the edge here.

    • @mastroitek
      @mastroitek ปีที่แล้ว +7

I'm not sure if it will backfire like that. Anyone looking to purchase his first camera will see the good offerings that canon has for the bodies and at the same will see all that good old EF glass that is selling at really good prices in the second hand market. This is kinda how they get people locked in the echosystem.

    • @alwynsmit3546
      @alwynsmit3546 ปีที่แล้ว +7

It will hurt them, but it won't be their downfall. There's ample EF glass available & the way I know Canon, they will expand their glass rather quickly.

    • @Canon1DMkII

@@alwynsmit3546 I own more EF L glass than anyone I know. The EF lenses all work great with the adaptors.
The decision-making process of people getting into a mirrorless system is cost driven. A Sony system is more compelling because Tamron and Sigma both offer high value high quality lenses at a substantially lower price than Sony.
Canon simply is playing this game with one hand (maybe both) tied behind their back.

Years ago I decided to never buy a third party lens. The reason is a perfect shot of Moraine Lake that was totally destroyed by a sigma glass. The mountains are blurred and I sent the lens to Sigma and they said it is „perfect“. I am still mad because I could have made some money on that shot. Even with new photoshop capabilities there is no way to fix that photo.

I am a Nikon user, I think not enough was said about their glass. I think the lenses they have released are phenomenal and are a huge selling point for them. I do definitely think that the auto focus system on the Z series is behind Sony and Canon. I believe they can catch up with it, as they continue to make strides. I am hoping that bodies catch up to the competition, because their lenses are phenomenal. Competition is good, we all win with competition!

@@Shaikailash1 they are building them in an order to maintain continuous growth(profit) if they released all the major lenses f1.2 or faster all in the beginning, there would be no draw to f2.8, f1.8, etc. This is all by design. Plus I am sure technically speaking, it takes longer to develop a f1.2 lens for a system then it does for let's say a f2.8.

Agree. I’m sad so many brands are struggling. In my youth I shot with Minolta XD7 and Pentax MX. Later with Sony a700,a850, Canon D5II, Nikon D90, D700, Olympus M5, Fujifilm X100S, Sony a6500 and finally A7C. I never sold any, so I sporadically shoot with them all, from time to time. The thing that made Nikon in the past, is that, there is an enormous amount of glass for their F mount system. This F mount system went for about sixty years!! I think people should watch out for Nikon because not only can the new Z mount have F mount glass adapted AND work well but that Nikon is licensing their Z mount tech to third party providers, to produce even more glass moving into the future. The beauty of having all these different lens permutations is that the discerning photographer can get the perfect glass for the job in hand. Also, Nikon has spent a lot of the last 15 months or so making large prime lenses and big zoom telephotos that, I as a hobbyist, could never afford but ones that the Professional Photographic Elites can. So smaller production lines, making higher profit gear, for the people who advertise Nikon … for free, the greatest photographers on Earth!! That is a long term winning strategy.

There are actually people switching from Canon, Nikon etc. Full Frame manufacturers to OM System. Not necessarily for the camera but for the whole system and especially the lenses. MFT lenses are not only smaller and lighter than their full frame counterparts, but regarding long focal lengths, they are also way cheaper. So especially outdoor wildlife photographers are interested in the system and many drop their heavy expensive gear for the much smaller, lighter and less costly OM system.
Also Olympus has had features in their cameras already for years which are now praised when introduced in models of other manufacturers, such as "PreBurst" at the Canon EOS R6 Mark II, which is well known by Olympus users as "Pre Capture" for years.

I have heard Pentax's epitaph for 30 years. Still going. Just got a K3 Mark 3. I'm a happy camper! When I pull out my 30 year old 600mm f5.6 A lens and nail the image, it is mine. I do have more modern lenses, like the stunning 150-450, but the 600mm is a joy to use. My images don't feel like they were synthesized by an AI machine. Pentax users are those who love photography; the experience. Canon/Sony users using their mirrorless systems are missing the deeper connection with their subjects. I have shot both Sony and Canon mirrorless and it simply is not the same experience. You look at a television screen, you get a picture off the television screen. Pentax users are in the mix with their subject.
And Pentax continues to be incredibly innovative. You have TOTALLY missed the boat on Pentax; what planet are you on? Look DEEPLY into the specs of the K3 iii. Too much of what Pentax offers are not offered by other manufactures.
I compete in nature photography with the very best photographers from across my state. Every other camera that enters it is a Sony, Nikon, or Canon. In every category I have competed, birds, general wildlife, macro, I have placed no worse than third. That is one camera system verses dozens of others. Yes, the 'new' camera is no great leap, it's a stop gap. I don't need to buy a new Pentax camera every year because each camera they manufacture provides years of dependable outstanding quality.
What I see from you two is that you have really lost your love of photography as you are so focused on the final product (maybe mostly Tony, at least he has said as much). If you do want to fall in love again with the artistry and intimate nature of photography, switch to Pentax.
You wanted rambling from an insane Pentax user. You have it. Nothing last forever, but beauty survives.

Good presentation and discussion. I have been a hobbyist photographer for 40 years. I shoot 20-25 events annually that I get paid for but mostly just for fun. I have owned Minolta, Nikon, Canon, and now Olympus. I typically find that even with the rapidly changing technology, I stay with a system for 10 -12 years minimum. I currently own an Olympus EM1 MIII and EM1 MII with 6 pro lenses. Although expensive, significantly less expensive than what a similar Canon or Sony system would have cost. I shoot high school sports, pet and family portraits (Outdoors) primarily when getting paid. I shoot grand kids, my own pets, and backyard wildlife for fun. I have found that the results I am able to achieve is excellent compared to friends shooting much more expensive kits. Not saying I get better results, simply it would be very difficult to pick out what prints came from me vs some of my photographer friends! With this being said, I like technology as much as anyone. If I had an unlimited budget, I would definitely have a FF system as well. My EM1 MIII with my Olympus 300mm telephoto is an incredible kit at an affordable price!!

I have a ton of Nikon f mount glass and 3 , dslrs. I needed better af and Nikon had just come out with the Z9. It for one was impossible to get so I grabbed up a Sony a7siii. I liked it so much I got another and many Sony and Sigma lenses. They are great cameras except for if my clients want higher resolution photos also . ( i shoot live music photography and mostly videography )
So that said I just purchased a Nikon Z9 w/the ftz adapter and a spare battery of course. So pumped to be back into the new breed of Nikon bodies and their future.
I feel Sony could do better on their bodies in quality and performance. Instead they try to give you juuuuuust enough of an upgrade. And spread the models to when you have to have my multiple bodies. The Z9 is the Swiss Army of cameras at a great price. But overall most camera companies do the same as Sony .
IM BACK NIKON ……. but not leaving Sony either. Until I purchased the Sony a7siii, Sony was a bad word in my mouth. But doing the low light video I do , at the moment nothing touches 12,800 base ISO performance. Maybe a Nikon Z6 can get something decent looking close to that ??? Not sure .
The Z9 is supposed to look good for video at iso 6400 I’ve seen . Well I’ll find out soon

Hello, I am a professional Photographer for about 45 years. In the seventy's and eighties I worked with Nikon(F2, F3, F4 etc. In that time nobody worked with Canon. But when the autofocus and digital systems were coming all my collega's switched to Canon. Nikon was too late with good digital camera's. So I went also to EOS 1 ds 1, 11, 111 and EOS D1 mark 1v. Those camera's were very expensive(7900 euro body) and the weight of the body with a lens was about ca 2 kg was always an issue. In the earlier days you could invest in high end camera's because the body's did not lost much value. But with the quick evaluations of camera's and systems at the moment this is over. So I decided to stop with that high end systems and am going to go for the om system. I have tested that camera and it is amazing what Om Systems has done with that camera. Especially the small lenses are great to work with. and the price is not the biggest problem. So when there is after a few years new one with newer specs I buy a new one.(viva Micro Four Thirds). So, maybe I am one of the few photographers who switch from Canon to MFT. as you say. I like the system.

I mostly shoot birds and I have an occasionally sore right shoulder as well so the smaller the gear the better. The OM-1 focuses faster and better than any of the mirrorless Canon gear that I have. I haven’t found a way to do dual back button focus on the OM-1 like I can on the Canon mirrorless bodies. I don’t mind the slight hit in IQ from the smaller sensor and being limited to 20mp. I do worry about the company’s longevity though. I don’t have much brand loyalty these days. I will buy what works for my use case.

For a future 3-4 month trip to Italy my wife and I are considering the OM-1 because of the computational photography features like Live ND, Starry Sky AF, Live Composite, High Res Shot and Focus Stacking. Almost forgot the Pro Capture mode! Plus, I love the new menu system from seeing videos and reading the PDF manual.
Also, I got the eBook by Tony Phillips "The Complete Guide To The OM System OM-1" to prepare for my Spring 2023 purchase. Fantastic book!
I am constantly amazed at many of the photos I see coming from the OM-1 camera all over the Web.
Plus, I'm physically-disabled from a military accident, so the lower weight will be much better for us when traveling around with our Pacsafe 45L carry-on bags and a Pacsafe 15L bag inside for day use.
I don't see getting a Micro 4/3 camera as a compromise. With f/1.2, f/1.4, f/1.8 prime lenses people are taking low-light photos that are amazing. Even their f/2.8 lenses deliver quality results.
The Canon R7 and R6 Mark II would have been good choices, but not with lenses that are not weather-sealed like the non-L lenses. It's ridiculous that they cannot weather-seal those lenses. Canon cheaps out on these lenses too much IMHO.

Most features aren’t really that useful in everyday photography. image quality is worse on smaller sensors no matter what bullshit influencer might tell you. Smaller pixel need way better glas and you will end up in paying more for less. positive on the system is the sturdy bodies and excellent weather sealing. But for most people the weather sealing on most cameras are more than good enough…

Until recently, my main photography thing was high school sports. Due to Parkinson's, even with fast shutter speed, I rarely got a shot that was quite focused. With a lot of skepticism, I gave Topaz Sharpen a try and was stunned by some of the results. I got sharper photos with better noise reduction (less loss of detail) and overall improved image quality, maybe as good as higher-end cameras could produce? That's just my experience. My primary photographic subject matter is landscape for which the Z7ii is doing an excellent job. My other photographic subject matter is fast moving, scale radio control models, including jets. I am working hard trying to get my techniques perfected for that activity but I'm sorry to admit that mirrorless just doesn't cut it with these models. I am absolutely not selling off my D850 as that camera absolutely nailes it capturing these fast-moving models. My keeper rate with the D850 is about 95-99%. By that I mean the entire airplane is in the field of view and its focus is tack sharp. So far, my Z7ii is running about 10-20% keepers. I need to work on my technique, but I can tell that the camera will be a severe limiting factor. I am not planning to sell the Z7ii either as it does have many very useful features but focus tracking on small, fast-moving objects is not its forte, contrary to all the videos saying otherwise. Maybe Nikon has figured all this out with the Z9, but that camera is way out of my price range right now.

I think probably the most common camera among serious macro photographers is Olympus EM1 II. For the longest time you could not do better than an Olympus for macro. The crop factor with high pixel density, along with amazing focus bracketing system that works with flash and the great stabilization make Olympus cameras beasts for handheld focus stacks of live macro subjects. I've seen many macro photographers switch to Olympus in the last couple of years. I shoot most things with Sony, but macro with Olympus.

Two thumbs up to Chelsea's comparison of Canon to that reliable, do-everything, but without style minivan. :) I also really liked Tony's explanation of Pentax's way forward - very thoughtful.
However when it comes down to recommending a Canon or Sony system to a newcomer, I'd definitely lean heavily on Sony as Sony has an open lens mount where Sigma and Tamron (and others) play nicely. This allows users a better choice of lenses at a price level that suits them. Canon and its bank of lawyers - not so much. Tony made a video explaining his disappointment on Canon's closed mount in the fall and must have forgotten.
Thanks for the insights Tony and Chelsea!

I tried twice to fall in love with Sony A7M3 and all 3 times I traded it off after 1 month. There was no love at all! Yes, AF is very good, but all the other things are not: strange body quality, strange apsc mount with cutted corners, disgusting display and evf res, awful menu, display info etc. But when I first took in hands Nikon Z6 - that was love! Yes, AF is faaar behind the other two brands, but in the other aspects it was sooo cool, so original, so sexy colors, lenses, shutter sound, ergonomics, body materials! Then I switched to Z6II and fall in love again with all tuned moments! Now I am waiting for 3rd iteration of it and hope that AF and video will grow up to the leader's level and that will be a huge success! Love u Nikon! 😍 Don't let me down! 😅

I have had nikon for many years with a first gen crop format DSLR and last year moved to a full frame DSLR by them (D780 as I can afford it now). Big selling point to me was the lens available, there is a huge used market for old F mount lens that can be had for affordable. I have a lot of expensive hobbies and can't put tons of money into my camera, so a 20 year old used lens gives good bang for the buck. I looked at mirrorless but the Nikon performance just wasn't there at the time for the price, also I wanted to get into astrophotography and I like the old fashion view finder, not a screen. I couldn't afford a body over $2k.

Good analysis. I agree with your final words about Canon and Sony, the minivan analogy sticks. It's true that Canon is an ultra stable and reliable system, but at the same time not as exciting to use, but it works very well. Sony always seems to come up with cool and exciting solutions and designs.
Reading through the comments, I see there are Olympus lovers out there. Tony's fan-boy observation sticks. The OM1's are kind of cool though. They are really robust tanks that are reliable with less innovation, but solid repetition.

I'm relatively new to the OM-1 after having come from Canon, Sony and Nikon. Never considered M43 because of the bias toward full frame systems. I wish I'd have done so earlier as it would have saved me time and money. It just suits my photography better and I'm sure I'm not alone. Unless you are a pro with specific needs, the OM-1 has some real advantages that would serve some folks best and I think that message is often lost to most of us who consume news on Western photography sites. The bias toward full frame is why there are M43 fanboys, imho. The system rarely gets a fair shake.

@@perfectfutures and @Malik you are very right. It’s quite a feature-packed camera and I really enjoy mine. They did also offer a high-resolution mode and good stabilization among other cool features.
The challenge for me stems primarily from my needs and requirements. They change and I’m having trouble finding one camera that can do it all. My EM1 is amazing for outdoor stuff, and some indoors, but I do require more low-light capacity which can be challenging to get with my EM1 Mkii or my GH4s. The latest developments that allow cameras with good low-light capabilities to significantly expand their video capacity is a game-changer for me. I have a need for more video power.
I should have given more context my to comment. I want to be clear that I am not sold to a brand, in fact, I don't really focus on the brand but rather on features and sustainability over the years.

Nice to discover a Northrup video not predicting the death of MFT. I just ordered 2 more Lumix cameras (GH5 M2 and G100) and while I have quite a bit of Sony gear, I use it only 10% of the time. Sony just doesn't have the video features that I need. MFT might only have a 5+% market share, but it is the perfect format for many of us. And it is fitting that Panasonic concentrate on video (and hopefully a G9 M2) because Panasonic developed VHS back in the day, and its first cameras were video cameras under the National brand.
While Olympus was bigger than Panasonic for several years, I think it will be the continuing strength of Panasonic video that will provide the base for the format that will keep Olympus's head above water. MFT will continue to thrive for many years to come. Likewise L-mount will continue. There are enough Panasonic enthusiasts to keep it going, and Sigma and Leica create the base there that allows Panasonic to swim.

Personally, I might compare Canon a bit to Toyota/Lexus in that they still build many of their products in Japan and are a bit conservative, but their products are very well made and they are generally extremely reliable. If this is replicated around the world it’s providing a revenue stream for OM. Hi there. Just happened to read your post on the Sony ergonomics. I have shot Sony mirrorless for about 6 years now and agree with you 100%. They lack that feel you want as the bodies just aren't friendly in the hand. What I came up with to solve this issue was buying an L-bracket that actually made the body feel and look bigger. I know this goes against the smaller body, less weight theory of a mirrorless, but I liked my Sony a7riii and it needed to feel better in hand. What I got was a Small Rig L Bracket that saved my day and gives me the feeling of the Cannon or Nikon full-frame rig. Just throwing that out there.

For the last few years I have been using metabones and the MC11 to bridge the two, but now have enough native Sony glass I don't do that much anymore either. To get to point my youngest is a budding and much more talented photographer than I, and I ofter don't have access to my Sony gear. Which drive back to the point of shooting and looking to add a used Canon body back to the bag so I have access to my gear again. I've found shooting little different between the two. Yes, Sony's menus can be frustrating, but honestly it has been months since I have had to change anything there - so no harm, no foul. Either line will produce images that will better than match the shooters skill... the camera will not hold you back. They are all capable.
