Can we just stop for a moment and appreciate how genius Kazuma's voice actor was? His voice was the most expressive thing I've ever heard in Anime. Like the moment he realized they will just work hard and not get anywhere, his voice was just broken, full of tears and ultimate disappointment. One detail I loved were those mid-episode screens where the character says KONOSUBA. But they still were in the role when doing it. Like when they were yelling or something, the transition screen pops up and they yell KONOSUBA in the same manner. It was a little detail but it cracked me a couple of times xD
one of my favorite things is how the dialog is written. for example when someone says the main characters name in passing he just squeezes in the line of "hi, yes here i am" and that subtle thing makes me laugh because its completely unnecessary
They basically make Kazuma the viewer. Ask the very obvious questions that everyone is avoiding, questioning what is wrong with these cliche anime tropes, and overall expressing his feelings in a realistic way. He's also cynical and a great liar which adds up to be a funny sit-com when put with these caste of characters.
@Gatrax, that wasn't even part of the script, the voice actor of Kazuma, Fukushima Jun, actually improvised that part, it was a 100% ad-lib. Still, it's amazingly well done.

I said “I roll a D20 to, I dunno fuck it?” And I actually got a 20 so the running joke is I had a thing for dragons and dragon people and everyone pointed it out and I ended up finishing the whole thing by sleeping with the leader dragon while my friends actually played D&D like a normal person, I mean to be fair they did say that they where going to 69 a demon matriarch but whatever.
Konosuba = Literally following along with 4 awful main protagonists that are all self-driven and yet follow along with each other because they need each other, and no one else understands their selfishness and evil ways unless they are together. Brilliant.
Zetsubou Matt Explosion waifu is actually probably the second most in depth one, since she had an arc where she had her childhood exposed, and cried when negative Bryce Papenbrook joked about staying with Eris. Darkness then received her background as a high ranking noble who was to be married away, but left to be an adventurer with best dad giving some extra exposition. Following this trend, SAO Sharkboy and Watergirl are probably gonna get some background in the next season, then after that they'll defeat Satan. It's predictable, but it drops a lot of info without feeling forced at all, which is a pretty hard balance to get.

in addition konosuba is so fun is because it play out exactly how actual dungons and dragons plays out, you can actually see the people you play with acting exactly like this and getting into these exact sitations so the charecters feel more real

Darkness's masochistic tendencies are probably the most consistently funny part of the show for me. Maybe it's because of how Kazuma is so desperately aware of how weird it makes their group look, or maybe it's because I like to play tanks in RPGs myself and you'd have to be a masochist to take that job on.
Honestly, Darkness is the one reason I've realised how much of a sexual masochist I am, so it's pretty hard not to feel obligated to like her (not to mention that I like her regardless).
Halifax Steppenwulf I really love the little thing they keep up with. Specifically I like whenever Kazuma is ever spoken to in a serious situation or a gag, he always says something like, "Yes I'm Kazuma" so nochalontly regardless of what is happening.
The best part about this show for me is that, even if I was not often laughing out loud, I would still always have a huge smile on my face from start to finish. The pacing of the humor is just so good.

You know, this was an interesting review because I felt the same way. I watched Konosuba because I heard it was hilarious. I didn’t think it was the funniest anime I’ve ever seen...or even close for that matter, but I binged both seasons in a couple of days because I found it entertaining and I did get a kick out of how the characters played off each other. I think one saving grace is Kazuma didn’t exactly thirst off his harem nor did his harem really gravitate to him because he was cool or good looking. It was more or less four losers who gravitated to each other because they essentially needed each other. I thought there were some parts that were funnier than most. My favorite episodes revolves around Megumin casting her magic on the Dullahan’s castle and the events that ensued. I swear those episodes made the series for me because it was so funny seeing an obviously evil character lose his shit at the absolute bonkersness of Kazuma’s party.
What was funnier to you than Konosuba? Not judging, i'm genuinely looking for comedy anime. I personally loved it, I think mainly because I had just finished bingeing several isekai anime and a few that were just...really sub-par in writing and filled with plot holes so Konosuba was a great relief to just enjoy.

SPOILER ALERT Nothing major, but still spoilers. Okay, so, Kazuma kinda ends up in a harem situation later on, but it feels earned by that point and it isn't rushed in the slightest. In fact, he takes an active role in slowing it down a bit because he isn't certain how he feels and actually doesn't really want the harem anyways. He makes a few jokes about growing his harem, but he makes up his mind about what he wants pretty quick and doesn't take (too much) advantage of the situation. Point is, it's kind of another subversion of the tropes done by this show. The MC doesn't try to play the field, nor is he afraid of committing. At least, not after he realizes that he actually does love the one that he does. Secondary spoiler alert: It's the meme. He loves the meme. Which was a little disappointing at first, since I was hoping for him to pick the Gemini girl, but it grew on me pretty quick.

I agree for the most part, but the ridiculousness of the characters and the world all-round is what gets me rolling. Quaint spoiler alert. The crimson magic clan is a bunch of chuunibyous (from what I can tell), darkness is the only weird royalty, and aqua has a clan that betrays all morals. The mohawk dude is official best girl despite being entirely irrelevant (not like I hate it though), the guild would sell Kazuma out in a second in front of a court, and basically all the big baddies have no tension in their encounters because they react so normally to the oddity that is the main cast. Sitcoms are usually based in normal worlds where the characters' comedy is based off of either betraying normalcy, from what little I've seen of sitcoms, or just making fun of things. In Konosuba, *everything* betrays normalcy so it's a lot funnier when we as an audience see something unexpected because it's expected. This combined with the fact that the protagonists themselves are outcasts in this wacky, wonderful world makes it all the better.

I was happily surprised that the 2nd season was even funnier. The first season made me laugh but the second had me howling. Also wanted to add a personal view on Darkness, I actually relate to her. What girl isn't raised being told that if you want to get off your a bad, dirty girl? She flips it and owns it 100%. She knows what she wants. She's not evil or trashy, she's actually seen as pure and noble (and she still is in many ways). She's a good person that enjoys getting off. It's so refreshing for me to see.
To me, Darkness is an incredibly tragic person. She's nice, so she's easy to love, but anyone who loves her isn't capable of being mean enough to her to make her happy. She has a good and unbreakable spirit, so a legitimately evil person couldn't handle her either. Too pure for a jerk and too twisted for a saint. Even if she could find true love, she'd probably teach her children to beat her - now THAT wouldn't look good!

One of my favourite parts is where aqua explains that whilst they were in the stable she would hear kazuma making "weird sounds" at night but would roll over to get to sleep
It had some funny moments, but I didn't find it as hilarious as some people. With better writing it could be SO MUCH BETTER! But I agree with Gigguk - it has a familiar sitcom quality, which made me watch it, even while I noticed LOTS of shortcomings...
Have you seen "Hataraku Maou-sama!" / "The Devil Is a Part-Timer!" ? I found it very entertaining / funny. It's basically about the devil king Sadao almost conquering the world, but has to flee to another world because of the angels. Now he is in the human world and works at Mcdonald.
I would like to recommend Seto no Hanayome, that show completely caught me offguard, and was the best comedy anime I had ever watched since Gintama. It's stupid to the core and parodies a lot of tropes in general. If you liked Gintama, you're 100% going to like that one.
The part that always cracks me up in Konosuba is when Darkness accuses Verdia of wishing to defile her and he says "...w-what!?" in such a great way. Loved the reaction. 😂

the reason this is my favorite anime is because of the found family aspect. its truly "friends are the family you choose" and youre absolutely right about feeling like youre the fifth friend. while watching this anime for the first time, mid pandemic, i was very lonely, and i literally had a couple of dreams where i was hanging out with them. i would wake up feeling a little less alone at a time when i needed to feel friendship the most.

Konosuba = Literally following along with 4 awful main protagonists that are all self-driven and yet follow along with each other because they need each other, and no one else understands their selfishness and evil ways unless they are together. Brilliant.
Zetsubou Matt Explosion waifu is actually probably the second most in depth one, since she had an arc where she had her childhood exposed, and cried when negative Bryce Papenbrook joked about staying with Eris. Darkness then received her background as a high ranking noble who was to be married away, but left to be an adventurer with best dad giving some extra exposition. Following this trend, SAO Sharkboy and Watergirl are probably gonna get some background in the next season, then after that they'll defeat Satan. It's predictable, but it drops a lot of info without feeling forced at all, which is a pretty hard balance to get.

Darkness's masochistic tendencies are probably the most consistently funny part of the show for me. Maybe it's because of how Kazuma is so desperately aware of how weird it makes their group look, or maybe it's because I like to play tanks in RPGs myself and you'd have to be a masochist to take that job on.

You know, this was an interesting review because I felt the same way. I watched Konosuba because I heard it was hilarious. I didn’t think it was the funniest anime I’ve ever seen...or even close for that matter, but I binged both seasons in a couple of days because I found it entertaining and I did get a kick out of how the characters played off each other. I think one saving grace is Kazuma didn’t exactly thirst off his harem nor did his harem really gravitate to him because he was cool or good looking. It was more or less four losers who gravitated to each other because they essentially needed each other.
I thought there were some parts that were funnier than most. My favorite episodes revolves around Megumin casting her magic on the Dullahan’s castle and the events that ensued. I swear those episodes made the series for me because it was so funny seeing an obviously evil character lose his shit at the absolute bonkersness of Kazuma’s party.

What was funnier to you than Konosuba? Not judging, i'm genuinely looking for comedy anime. I personally loved it, I think mainly because I had just finished bingeing several isekai anime and a few that were just...really sub-par in writing and filled with plot holes so Konosuba was a great relief to just enjoy.

Nothing major, but still spoilers.
Okay, so, Kazuma kinda ends up in a harem situation later on, but it feels earned by that point and it isn't rushed in the slightest. In fact, he takes an active role in slowing it down a bit because he isn't certain how he feels and actually doesn't really want the harem anyways. He makes a few jokes about growing his harem, but he makes up his mind about what he wants pretty quick and doesn't take (too much) advantage of the situation.
Point is, it's kind of another subversion of the tropes done by this show. The MC doesn't try to play the field, nor is he afraid of committing. At least, not after he realizes that he actually does love the one that he does.
Secondary spoiler alert: It's the meme. He loves the meme. Which was a little disappointing at first, since I was hoping for him to pick the Gemini girl, but it grew on me pretty quick.
Everytime Megumin performs explosion magic, my heart also explodes. .
Nothing melts my heart more than hearing her yell “EXXXXXPLOSHUN!” And then collapsing to the ground lifeless onto her face after blowing away half of the planet’s atmosphere.

I agree for the most part, but the ridiculousness of the characters and the world all-round is what gets me rolling.
Quaint spoiler alert.
The crimson magic clan is a bunch of chuunibyous (from what I can tell), darkness is the only weird royalty, and aqua has a clan that betrays all morals. The mohawk dude is official best girl despite being entirely irrelevant (not like I hate it though), the guild would sell Kazuma out in a second in front of a court, and basically all the big baddies have no tension in their encounters because they react so normally to the oddity that is the main cast. Sitcoms are usually based in normal worlds where the characters' comedy is based off of either betraying normalcy, from what little I've seen of sitcoms, or just making fun of things. In Konosuba, *everything* betrays normalcy so it's a lot funnier when we as an audience see something unexpected because it's expected. This combined with the fact that the protagonists themselves are outcasts in this wacky, wonderful world makes it all the better.

I was happily surprised that the 2nd season was even funnier. The first season made me laugh but the second had me howling.
Also wanted to add a personal view on Darkness, I actually relate to her. What girl isn't raised being told that if you want to get off your a bad, dirty girl? She flips it and owns it 100%. She knows what she wants. She's not evil or trashy, she's actually seen as pure and noble (and she still is in many ways). She's a good person that enjoys getting off. It's so refreshing for me to see.
To me, Darkness is an incredibly tragic person. She's nice, so she's easy to love, but anyone who loves her isn't capable of being mean enough to her to make her happy. She has a good and unbreakable spirit, so a legitimately evil person couldn't handle her either. Too pure for a jerk and too twisted for a saint. Even if she could find true love, she'd probably teach her children to beat her - now THAT wouldn't look good!

I would like to recommend Seto no Hanayome, that show completely caught me offguard, and was the best comedy anime I had ever watched since Gintama.
It's stupid to the core and parodies a lot of tropes in general. If you liked Gintama, you're 100% going to like that one.

the reason this is my favorite anime is because of the found family aspect. its truly "friends are the family you choose" and youre absolutely right about feeling like youre the fifth friend. while watching this anime for the first time, mid pandemic, i was very lonely, and i literally had a couple of dreams where i was hanging out with them. i would wake up feeling a little less alone at a time when i needed to feel friendship the most.
