Our Marketplace producer teams up with hacker Jim Browning, who tips off our investigators to phone scams in progress. Watch as our team interrupts the calls and stops vulnerable victims from losing money. This special one-hour finale of Marketplace's 49th season reveals the inner workings of a multi-layered, sophisticated scam.

Some, once caught and feeling threatened due to legal recourse against them, f.e., might say that they apologize, but how sincere they would be in doing this is a whole other question. If they also are prepared to promptly provide reparations, then this would make their apologies credible, certainly more anyway, but only if they followed through with providing the reparations and quickly so. If it is about $$ and they are not willing or claim that they are not able to provide the reparations, then they would need to be required to make up for this by other means, without it being by robbing other innocent people. Etc.

My coworker ended up falling for the scam and told me about it, and I felt like he opened my eyes to the fact that this can happen to anyone.
Now, I never give info over the phone if I don’t have to and if I can physically go into stores to get help for anything that’s what I do, that way you know you’re giving your secure info to people that aren’t out to steal your identity.

I am glad about the CBC Marketplace trying to stop scammers and educating Canadians, but at the same time victims need to be told to turn off their computer in case the scammer is connected to their computer as well as to call their bank and CC just in case. Why? Because even if they did not send money, as long as they had logged into their online bank while the scammers have been connected to their computer, they install keyloggers and could easily make new CC in the victim's name and details.

This is so sad. I used to work in a CRA call centre a few years ago. I remember getting a call from an officer at immigration that some guy had shown up at an office in tears and having a panic attack. The guy had recently became a permanent resident(less than a year) and got a call that he owed like 10k in taxes and he had to pay up or be deported. I ended up speaking to the guy and calming him down and clearing up the problem but he was so terrified. I felt so bad for him

Ya, what people do not know is that people who are new to the country come from countries where this type of thing might actually happen from government, so they don't know what it legit or not where. They are easily victimized, and part of the immigration integration does not teach them to recognize scams. I have family from Iran that came to Canada, so I know how easily they may fall for this because of the difference in culture.

He told them he didn’t know how to access our bank account right then but could they call back in an hour when I got home. They started yelling at him and telling him he had to stay on the phone with them until I got home or they would send the police because he was trying to flee. I believe constant education, radio ads & tv spots telling seniors & others NEVER to send money EVER...as long as it takes...I believe decades ago when companies started outsourcing real calls & customer support/help to Indian call centers instead of real Canadian people answering is when things shifted.

That out sourcing was the speeding up point of the down fall of western society

Getting the word out is important in stopping these scams. One thing my wife and I did was when we noticed a local store selling gift cards didn't have signage up warning of scams, she complained to a manager and he went online and watched some scambaiting videos and couldn't believe how far some of these scammers go. He put up signs on the gift card display after that.
Some stores have signage, some don't. We need to get more stores to put up signs warning of these scams.
