- Canadians are losing millions of dollars to a devastating new cyber-scam known as “pig butchering.” It's a long-term con that combines romance scams, crypto fraud and investment schemes. CBC Marketplace talks to people who've lost their life savings and the trust of their loved ones as a result of this scam. And in a surprising twist, we reveal that many of the perpetrators are victims themselves, forced into a life of scamming.
If you think you or somebody you know may be a victim of a scam, report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

Facebook should be held accountable for hosting those ads that lead victims to scams.
even in whats app from nigerian scmmers
NO, People need to be held accountable for their own actions.
Facebook and other social media are just a platform for people to connect with others and for businesses to market their products. They never force anyone to make decisions. Instead of blaming others, the users are responsible for their own actions.
@@benbazy9238 Read your statement. ☺😅🤣😂
@@EconomicWarfareBe accountable for dumb decisions. All of these people were conned by the need to be greedy. If you know that there's no such thing as a free lunch, the scammers can't steal from you. It's pretty simple. Get a better bullshit detector.
Bravo to *Charge backtools* I'm so glad you're out there fighting these scumbags.
We must do everything in our power to protect the elderly and the general public from these despicable scammers. You're a true hero. my brother.
Pig butchering example: You receive a text message from a wrong number. You reply - wrong number. They reply back something innocent. You reply with a lol. Next thing you know you’re texting each other, becomes friendly. They want to be friends. They take it to the next level. Before you know it - you’ve been pig butchered! Never reply “wrong number”. Don’t let them know it’s an active number. It can even be a seemingly innocent message… Hey I can’t make my doctors appointment. You’re a nice person so you reply Wrong Number. Or they send a text message that says - what time is the meeting? You’re a nice person and you wanna make sure other plans don’t get messed up so you reply wrong number. Wrong thing to do. Don’t be that nice guy. PT Barnum said it best.
That wrong number text is so annoying. One time the scammer was pushing it after I said wrong number. Talking about wanting to buy me a coffee because they are so grateful I replied wrong number so they know they weren't texting their friend. I just replied stop texting me. Never heard from them again
Just be careful and aware
It's actually pretty easy: Whatever you do, *DO NOT SEND MONEY*
Block and report those texts
I get weird texts all the time like "hey did you get my e-transfer?" or "im waiting for you now" or "are you home yet?" they're designed to illicit responses from you - i'm assuming to see if your number is active.
Basic reality has long been " if it seems to good to be true, it most likely is"
Exactly
At least ask a professional about it {your bank for example) not a random company on Facebook
🤣😂😅
True. But nearly humans don't realise that.
Right. If someone is giving away their piano, they just want it gone without paying for removal. If someone is giving away cash, its a fraud and a lie.
If you don't know them, don't talk to them... it's pretty simple.
EXACTLY. These ppl aren't victims. They gave away their money. Now ask them how many donated to local charities.
Bingo.
AlWays remember, DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS
its simple for someone with a brain and common sense.
That's not how a ELDERLY BRAIN is rewired ! Even retired CHIEF of the FBI was scammed !
Never answer unknown people that unsolicited contact you, block and delete.
Wow! Really! Without your advice I would NEVER have thought of that in a MILLION years!
Sorry but I accept them all. I love scam baiting.
I wish there was more people like you to stop all these scammers, they need serious jail time for that, especially when they take money from the elderly, keep doing what your doing *#GlobalTraceAssets* put the wind up these low life oxygen thiefs Love what you Guys do keep up the great work mate well done Respect
The more deprived of love and desperate the more vulnerable you are
Definitely
BS. I am elderly and all my friends recognise that they are not going to be dating into their 60s let alone their 70s and 80s.
deprived of love and desperate = 99% of the world population
I know somebody who lost 200k.. these scammers have no heart . They will scam the dying.
Plenty of criminals steal from the elderly and dying. How many stories do we have about Carers being caught on CCTV stealing from their clients purses? There was one recently where an ambulance paramedic was rifling through the wallet of someone he was taking to hospital.
Did he/she report to the right authorities to get the money back?
If not then he needs to immediately
It’s basically the Chinese mafia half the time yes they have no heart there’s also a huge facility outside Dubai where they are doing this. The facility is so big they have a mobile satellite dish truck parked out front to handle the huge amount of internet bandwidth
@@BrianSmith-yq7ys no it is 'basically' coming from Lagos.
I got scammed while living in Germany when trying to rent an apartment. They were very convincing and their story seemed airtight. I feel awful for people like Stephanie, these scammers are professionals. You always think you're never going to let this happen to you until it does.
@@TonyCyberweb Trying to pull a recovery scam eh?
I can’t believe people would actually invest online with someone they don’t know. These creeps are so good and people fall for their evil ways. Sad
@@karaklein5348 they see first the profits then people get greedy thats how they do it
@@karaklein5348 they are not 'so good'. But play on the fact that 50% of the population is below average intelligence.
Outstanding job, *Briskdeft* ! I'm so glad you're out there battling these vile scammers. We must take every precaution to protect the general people and the elderly from these vile con artists!!
Bravo to you! You ought to be awarded the Nobel Prize for protecting us. Big up, brother
Damn, that was hard to watch. I hope the victims receive justice someday (those who were scammed and the enslaved scammers). What a nightmare system; it's heartbreaking.
yah right...dream on ...the cops are clueless and powerless
Would that woman have engaged that dude if he wasn’t a young handsome Asian. She says. I one ever called her honey or baby. Lady are you 50 years old or 15? Later on greed took over and now she’s out $500,000. SMH.
Never deal money with anyone who meet online and never met in person!!!!
they can scam you in person as well
@@kevinchen5703 True but at least you have seen their real face and can easily catch them. Online it’s basically impossible
Lol yea that was my exact thought@@kevinchen5703
They can also hack your friend's accounts and work from there
Ok
This is been going on for a long time… I remember back in 2009 or 10 I met a Chinese lady online. On a dating site. I had never heard of “pig butchering“. She made me think she liked me… She sent me lots of photos of her fancy purses… Short videos of her driving her Porsche, etc. etc. Then she started talking to me about crypto. She desperately tried to get me to open an account so that she could “teach me” about crypto investing. Luckily, I immediately knew this was a scam. I strung her along for a little while, and just kept telling herthat I did not need more money. I was very well off, and I was not at all interested in crypto. She got kind of angry and just stopped talking to her.😂
😂 I do the same...toy with them awhile and piss them off
I can't imagine how hard it would be to decide to take on a moneygetback role of scammed persons..
The history needs to be remembered though and the help that was born through such pain and suffering. Respect to these *Charge backtools* team that take on these roles.
I'm sorry these people were scammed, but holy crap, giving a random stranger your money?
that’s what im saying like bruh
You always think you'll never Fall for it until you do.
@Siriuslyyy um no. I've been messaged numerous times and haven't fallen for this. Falling for this is typically indicative of desperation, greed, and a lack of critical thinking.
It is like the CRA scams. The government doesn't ask for payment in gift cards. 🙄
I met someone , she gives $ 90 000 believing that guy will repay it with a GOLD that is on 'hold' on border overseas...just need little buy little until he got 90 000, and she ended up empty account...!!! Friends told her that he is scam, she just WANTED continue...she was all in 'him'...to the last penny...!!!
@@Siriuslyyy or don't. I have scammers approach me, mainly through Yahoo Mail, 2 or 3 times a day and they are so obvious. Where I live we have our own telephone company, Kingston Communications, that dates back to when telephone exchanges were first started. A workman went into the house of a friend of my neighbour in the middle of her giving someone claiming to be from them her passport number and told her to put the phone down. Why on earth did she think that the they would would want her passport number but to make it worse, her son is one of the managers of the company.
It is hard enough to trust ppl in real-life.
How can ppl trust strangers online?!
Loneliness drive them to speak to them. Thats why talk and love your parents
Don’t blame the victims. Blame the losers doing this to innocent people
Remember this people every time anybody ask you for money in any shape of form especially someone you've never met RUN. As for family members you should have a limit of how much you can help cuz some family members are scammers too
Stephanie. Forgive yourself. You are a kind and lovely person that deserves happiness. I’m sorry this happened to you. You are not alone. Try to look forward and put this behind you. Everyone makes mistakes and you will learn and grow. It’s awful this happened and I’m sorry.
I had initially planned to retire at 62, work part-time, and save money, but the impact of high prices on various goods and services has significantly disrupted my retirement plan. I'm worried about whether those who experienced the 2008 financial crisis had it easier than I currently am. The volatility of the stock market is a concern as my income has decreased, and I fear that I won't be able to contribute as much as before, potentially jeopardizing my retirement savings.
freakin bots LOL
@peartreez The irony on this kind of video too 😑
Has anyone watched this Chinese movie?it is called (No more bets),based on the true stories, this movie describe the scam ogranization and how to scam people,I highly recommend watching this movie with your family, increase the awareness of anti- fraud and protect them
Lol u scamming here 😂
You can collect SS at 62. The amount overall doesn't change, but your checks are smaller because the payments are spread out over a longer period of time.
A lot of these scams are very good. Make sure you check the email address and not the subject.
with that being said, the email addresses can be spoofed
Exceptional work, *Briskdeft* I'm glad you're battling these jerks out there. We must take every precaution to safeguard the elderly and the general public from these disgusting scam artists!
You've earned it!! You deserve the Nobel Peace Prize for keeping us safe, brother
Amazing that a video about crypto scamming gets picked up by the crypto scam bots. Checkout these comments... They dont even make sense in context.
😂🤣
I know right! I was like omg the irony is astronomical. 😂😂😂

How can you be so dumb to send your life savings away. It's pretty frustrating tbh
Love the market place.they should have their own channel
I saw a similar documentary in the Philippines. .They hired Filipinos to work as office staff or telemarketers to be based in Thailand but the job is actually in Myanmar owned by Chinese
They thought it was a real job. But when they arrived they found out that the job is about scamming people mostly Americans,, Canadians and Europeans. They were beat up if you refused to do what they told you to do. .They were not allowed to go out. At the end they were rescued.
Thanks for sharing. Wow, that's horrible, so scary. Glad they were rescued!
it takes a good dose of greed and plenty of gullibility to think you can 'invest' $250,000 and then 'earn' a million dollars almost overnight. i still feel bad for the victims though. crypto is a scourge.
I never answer the phone to numbers I don't know. Why let them know your phones number is active. They can leave a voice mail. They never do.
I never answer texts I don't know as well.
So you're never out looking for a job, I mean, unknown numbers will call you for interviews 🤦🏽♂️

I had the same situation in 2022, that year was a hard year for me. I even hired a lawyer and no support they always took my money. I have finally healed from that. I have not gotten anything back, I did all I can. All I can do is move on sadly. You are not alone.

1. The colleague that’s helping the guy chat someone up had better be using a burner phone with NO accounts or anything identifiable or associated with a real person, because when she said shed downloaded an app to her phone as instructed as part of the investigation, her phone is bugged.
2. The lady victim who lost her life saving is brave to come forward with her story. She overcame her biggest embarrassment to warn others, which is very commendable. 👏👏👏
3. Greed is the root cause of the second victim.
Scambaiting these guys never goes anywhere. They suck at maintaining a conversation.
When I saw the line from the singpore lady text "I have been in it" I was like hunh? terrible english, red flag
People get wrapped up in this stuff because of social media. It’s why everyone thinks every OF model is making millions and everyone is getting rich off Crypto.
And everyone telling them not to just have their money in a bank but they need to make their money work for them. You need to buy stocks, bonds and do this and that and before you know it you’re broke. Because you’re looking at the exceptions and trying to be the exception.
You're great Seriously. You're super likable at the same time. The FBI should seriously hire you right now based off of these videos. You're a true patriot sir. Thank you *Chargebacktools* for all you do please don't stop. You're so important to this country people like you. You're putting fear into literal countries. On a funny note; your character is legendary at this Point
Time and again women and men fall for people online or otherwise, with whom could not meet in person but offer romance through text messages and phone calls or even investment opportunities to get rich. The
Euphoria of getting married to a rich/beautiful/handsome person or getting rich blind their vision to see the red flags and warning signs.

I love these documentaries! Thanks!
Some very very learned people fall for it - this can happen to anyone - the scammers can be very deceptive - they are trained to trick
Some of them send obvious wrong number messages. But sometimes they get emotional when you don't reply. I had one once inviting me to go golfing on a specific date. I didn't reply. Then I get an angry message on that specific date asking why I didn't show up. Nope.

Thanks Marketplace for informing us on this! I knew about the crypto scams, but I had no idea about the human trafficking/slave labour/abuse on the other side. To all the lonely people, if an online "boyfriend/girlfriend" has a problem and needs your help, has an idea for investment or getting rich, is from another county and needs you for legal residency---run away from the person! I am convinced based on all the scammers that responded to my personal ad, that online romance is almost always a scam.

This same thing happened to me twice. The 1st lady just me was scammed into a thing called crypto yield farming. And the 2nd gentleman was scammed into a scam called crypto yield farming. It sounds good and legitimate in the beginning. But what learned was that nothing is free and if it sounds to good to be true, it more than likely is. I pray that our HEAVENLY FATHER PROTECTS ALL OF US. AMEN
This is heartbreaking
These “victims of scam” are mostly motivated by greed and lust . They should be held accountable for the proliferation of scams due to their lack of due diligence and gross negligence
There are scammers on TH-cam as well
This is just scammers taking advantage of the loneliness crisis that has griped society.
Brokenness provides paths for exploitation
Do you know how I always end these scams? I always ask for a current selfie. From right now. Not an old photo; a new one from the current moment. Once they send it I ask if they just took it. They always reply that it's a new photo. I then ask for a subsequent photo with the same clothes on, same room, same background. The I ask to send me holding their hands in an OK symbol underneath their chin. It always ends the scam dead in it's tracks.
I tried that, I had her original picture from the first text and asked her to hold up three fingers in front of her face so I could compare. Surprisingly she did it and it really WAS her in the first photo! I cut the conversation after a few more messages saying I was too old to be her friend (by about 40 years!)
Thanks for sharing.
Dude, *VortexTrace* you are a modern-day hero.
