I wish more people gave this movie a chance. I watched it a few years back and as soon as I finished it, I knew I had to tell my friends about it. Now whenever we all get together for a movie night at least 2 of them always ask to all watch Coherence again. I heard all the actors were given cue cards with what their characters intentions were in each scene. There wasn’t a script. They let them bounce off eachother and it works so well.

The technique is called retroscripting. Used to great effect in comedy especially. Curb your Enthusiasm being a great example.

BRO IM SO GLAD YOU COVERED THIS. This is one of few movies that genuinely creeped me out. The existential cosmic horror of accidentally leaving your reality and ending up trapped in an infinite number of realities never to return to your world, is unsettling. Especially when you realize that copies of yourself from shittier realities start coming after you so they can kill you and take your place.

The fact that this movie was almost entirely improvised is bonkers. The first time I watched it I kept seeing things that were out of place and I thought "lol low quality, they must've forgotten about that" and then it turns out it was all intentional. Blown away.

YOOOO this is such a surprise!! I watched this movie earlier last year and loved it, it's such a hidden gem! I haven't finished the video yet, but did you know that on a budget of only $50,000 they were able to film this in only 5 nights!? Also there wasn't a script for this film at all, apparently the director/writer had notes for everyone to sort of give them the push for the general direction of the story each night they filmed, but other than that, what you're seeing is the improvisation and real reactions of all the actors. The lead actress didn't even know she was the main character until about the third night in lol. When the lights go out for the first time and there's a loud knock on the door, that's their real reactions - they had no idea what was going to happen!

I have a soft spot for movies where the protagonist becomes their own antagonist - in a real man vs himself sense. This one was great. It is terrifying when the unknowable is you. And the very thing you fear is yourself. Such a great and trippy set up.

  • @Puppy_Dough

OMGGGG one of my favourite movies of all time, and I think you're the first person I've seen react to it! Lots of people have mentioned how completely improvised it is, which I think is what makes it such great mumblecore, so here's another fun fact from the directors commentary: each time the film cuts to black it's cutting to another house. It's never made implicit so you can choose if it makes the film better or not to keep it in mind, but pretty cool concept I think! This is my favourite film to get peoples blind reactions to, so long as they can sit through the style. It's such an effective creeping dread without ever being outright scary.

I'm so happy you reacted to this film!! It's a gem and should be way more popular than it is! I would highly recommend "Primer", "Predestination", "Triangle", and "Time Lapse"! About books, anything by Arthur C. Clarke is amazing, but I really think you would enjoy "Childhood's End" a lot! Another great sci-fi author is Blake Crouch, and if you've never read Iain Reid, I think you could like his writing, introspective thrillers that always make the readers feel there is something wrong happening, but I'd specifically recommend "Foe" (also the adaptation just came out), which is also a sci-fi full of existentialism, it's wonderful!

IMO it's a horror adjacent sci-fi thriller at the very least. Though it seems horror is kept out of the descriptions for it, despite there definitely being a horror aspect. So yeah, I agree with you, it's a horror film. Sci-Fi/Horror/Thriller IMO. Sometimes there's a very shaky line between horror and thriller, but the way I feel about that is if it generates any feelings of fear, and especially fear of the unknown, as is the case here, it's horror. Specifically Cosmic Horror.

I love Horror and Sci Fi but after 2/3 of those genres the Tension is gone. I prefer this bottle sorta character interaction of “What is going on”

This is one of my all time favorite movies, fun to rewatch several times. I would also recommend VIVARIUM in the same vein as this for sci fi. Gave me a similar vibe in its creepy questionable sense of reality, watched it around the same time. It gave my woman nightmares, it sticks with you, another creepy "what is happening here" sci fi movie in the suburbs, please do Vivarium soon

I love this movie, was so excited when I saw you were reacting to it! YOU MUST WATCH 'TRIANGLE' (2009) (DO NOT watch trailers, it'll ruin A LOT)

James, I strongly recommend you Philip K. Dick novel, - "Ubik". Try to make some adaptation screenplay for this. Who knows, maybe you will help someone in the future to bring it on screen, finally.

I had the joy of going into Coherence not knowing anything, and seeing that you were doing this THRILLED me. This movie is so incredible! Apparently, there wasn't really a script, so much as character descriptions and backstories, and a whole lot of improvisation.
Also, the movie you were thinking of at the end was Primer, not Scanners.

Like a lot of people in these comments, I was surprised to see this movie covered by a reactor. I stumbled on this flick a few years ago and have since seen this a few times. I usually avoid low budget not just because of the budget but because the acting methods of C-list actors annoy me, which this movie has as well, however, the concept and direction is executed so well I can forgive my little quips. This borders on cosmic horror without the creatures…
Because you asked for recommendations: Beyond the Black Rainbow

Really enjoyed watching this a few years ago, went in blind and it was brilliant.
I'd recommend The Vast of Night for a similar low-budget sci-fi film which is a lot better than its budget.

James there are possibly more than two Emily’s during the climax of the film. Watch it again. There’s always more to notice in this film.😊

If you liked this movie you should see it The Man From Earth! Sci fi, one location, a great script.

My favorite genera. Top favorites, Contact. 2001, Forbidden Planet. Arrival. , Cloud At;las. Tops. Fifties had great Sci fi, The Thing, Them. The Day the Earth Stood Still. Incredible Shrinking Man War of the Worlds. you are thinking Primer with the garage time machine. still trying to unravel it after multiple viewings. . Scanner was body horror sci fi by Cronenberg . and Scanner Darkly by Phillip K Dick and directed by the rotoscope king. Richard Linklater. big sci fi are both impressive .

FAQ About Time Travel. British-American cast and production between BBC and HBO. Has some similar vibes to this (very weak), has comedy, has thriller etc.
