JONNY GREENWOOD (guitarist of Radiohead) did the soundtracks for Phantom Thread, The Master, and There Will Be Blood
And Inherent Vice!
Also a few videos on Radiohead's YT channel were directed by PTA ! "Radiohead - The Numbers: Jonny, Thom & a CR78" etc, can't get enough of that one recently
WOW! I did not know this hahaha thank you for the legendary drop of info 🙏🏽
And also You Were Never Really Here and We Need to Talk About Kevin, both great Lynne Ramsay films!! what a genius
The power of the dog.
Saw this in theaters 3 times. The sound design was incredible, violent at times because of the amount of silence there is as well.
Yup! I mention this in the video actually so it’s great you did too.
the ending completely changed my brain chemistry when i first saw this
You’re watching my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson film. This one is wild….
Hahaha it became my favorite as well!
You should really check out Rebecca, by Alfred Hitchcock. PTA took much inspiration from Rebecca (and Kubrick).
The conflict here is that Woodcock is a mama's boy, haunted by her, while she lives in his craft, the dresses, and the superstitions he prints on them (the secret messages he sews in them, the meshes of his mother's hair in his suits), and Alma comes to break this curse, with her mushroom potion, casting the ghost away (the scene where Woodcock sees his mother and she goes away as soon as Alma comes in and takes her place). His sister is obviously eager to help Alma as soon as she recognizes in her the cure for his sick heart, so she can also move on and stop taking his mother's place. And the cure is making him vulnerable, like a baby, the baby he was to his deceased mom, instead of this cocky child he is now. They find their balance: Alma has the man she loves, that empowers her with his magestical creations, his vision (in a pleasury way), while Woodcock has his mother figure that takes care of him and that he can spill his guts out (literally and metaphorically). This is not a literal movie, is a fairy tale, a ghost story. You have the castle, the dresses, the woods, the blue skyes, the vampire (aparently PTA loves casting Daniel as a vampire, just like in There Will Be Blood) and the damsel, but not in destress, as she is much more dangerous and cunning than our vampire predicted and overthrows his power.
Toe to toe with Punch-Drunk Love as my favorite film ever.
I love how Cyril gives Alma one last test by pressuring her to help with the Princess' wedding dress, thereby having to touch it, and Alma discovers Reynolds' "Never Cursed" secret message already knit within. He protected her from the superstition. Romantic AF.
I love listening to people who love something express their love for it
One of my favorite activities heh
One of the things I love so much about "Phantom Thread" is how you can easily see a dozen different ways the movie can unfold -- like when I saw it for the first time, I thought the mushrooms would come into play as Alma saw a way to get Cyril out of the picture and have Reynolds all to herself. But then immediately, as you point out, Alma and Cyril come to a mutual understanding and respect and you realize that's not the way it's playing out, which made it all the more thrilling.
YOOOO FINALLY. Not enough reactions to this one on youtube
I love DDL performance in this. I often find he goes a little too hard into his roles but I find this to be so smooth and subtle
So glad a reaction by someone who really understands art is out for this.
I always loved how she also asked him to marry her, putting them on equal grounds in terms of truly loving one another, such intimate detail.
Ooh, I loved this film. I don't usually notice a soundtrack when I'm engrossed in a story, but I was very aware of this one. So lovely.
I was caught by it instantly haha!
Finally someone reacts to this masterpiece. More people need to see it.
Exquisitely filmed and acted. Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead did the score and was robbed at the Oscars.
Yeah finding out homie from Radiohead didn’t soundtrack along with other films was such a mind blown.
@@JamesVSCinema You are a great commentator. Anxious for you to see the great "Rosemary's Baby".
I just watched this again Saturday night, first time I've seen it in years. I still have the ticket stub from opening night in my Bluray case! Such a beautiful film, and definitely a contender of my fav PTA movie.
Paul thomas anderson was actually the cinematographer in this film
I love how classy this movie appears to be when in reality it has more shade than a season of RuPaul's Drag Race and it's boils down to being about two dang ass freaks finding their soulmate. It's the best movie about a dude named Mr. Woodcock since Mr. Woodcock.
Thank you for watching this, it’s one of my most favorite films and I am so glad you’re going to experience it. The sound design is gorgeous, and the intimacy you feel in some scenes is just magical and unmatched. The chemistry of the characters, the depth and warmth in the shots, everything makes me weak lol ♥️ Gorgeous gorgeous intoxicating film ✨
Couldn’t have said it any better Stacey! :)
Haven't seen anybody mention it yet, but despite this being one of the best-looking pta films imo, there was actually no official cinematographer during the production of this film
I don't know how there aren't more reactions to this fantastic film! One of my favorites!! ❤
YES OMG OMG THIS IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE MOVIES THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR REACTING THIS IS SUCH A PERVERSE AND TOXIC ROMANCE
I am so happy to see you thriving James! Its been a while for me but i just wanted to hop in and appreciate your content. Phantom Thread is such a unique experience. Glad you enjoyed it :)
Appreciate the love and to see you still stopping by! Happy to see ya friend!
One of my personal favorites from PTA
Same :)
Love your reactions James!!! This is an all timer for me. Phantom Thread’s musical score is also one of my favourites. Johnny Greenwood is a genius. Did you know this film has no ADR. All dialogue was recorded on set which is really rare and impressive considering how amazing it sounds. Nearly all the foley was recorded on location and helps to give this film such a genuine and intimate feel. Absolute magic. PTA also done the cinematography himself for this film and it looks amazing.
Nice! Been meaning to rewatch this. A truly beautiful movie, with one of the best scores I've heard in a long time. Sad to think this might be the last time we see Daniel Day-Lewis acting, but it's a great last movie for sure.
James, if you haven't seen "Doubt" with Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, I strongly recommend that you do. It has pretty much everything that you love about good drama. It's phenomenal.
I sometimes forget the multiple accents and mannerisms Dan Day-Lewis has in all films I saw him in. You should see him in My Left Foot, he's borderline unrecognizable.
This movie feels like it should be a Kodak Film commercial. There’s a beauty here I just don’t see in digitally shot movies. Just incredible aesthetically.
Such a lovely film, one of my comfort movie alongside with The grand budapest hotel
Love both films!
YOOOOO idk how i missed this! watched it for the first time last september and it blew me away. sound design is ridiculous. daniel day-lewis, vicky krieps and especially lesley manville took me by surprise - just such impeccable casting. obviously PTA does his thing too. AND JOHNNY GREENWOOD ON THE SCORE IS INSANE. ready for the rewatch with your perspective at hand!
This movie is an absolute beautiful piece of art. I love the 3 main actors, they are phenomenal, Lesley Manville does not suffer fools! And I wish I could see Vicky Krieps in other films, I hope that she appears in more films, and this was Daniel Day Lewis' last film, which is awful, but what a way to end a career. The music, the pacing and the actors made this such a beautiful experience to see.
Looked this video up yesterday and was sad to see it didn’t exist. It’s a 4/20 miracle
We make miracles happen here fam! 🤘🏽
Another great PTA movie that has no reactions on YT is Inherent Vice. Another Johnny Greenwood score and personally my favorite PTA film even tho ppl seem to love it or hate it. It’s his funniest by far and an absolute blast to watch. Very elevated by the performances. Would love to see you react to it one day.
I’ll give that one a look too!
Inherent Vice is PTA's Big Lebowski.
Another absolute UNIT of a film here!

Have a great day!
James have you seen Dangerous Liaisons? If not, it’s right up your alley with love, obsession, and all the complexities that they contain
My favorite film of its decade and one the biggest Way Homers of my life. A film that was my hobby for about two months. An interpretive goldmine on which I gleefully spilled more than 11k words. Anyone who does not appreciate this film may confidently delegate the task to me. Glad you caught the timing of the shot where Alma does not accept the proposal until after another woman's dress leaves the frame.
An interesting note on this one, is that there is technically no cinematographer. PTA worked himself with the camera team and lighting team. There also a ton of material on TH-cam on the lens tests and their lights choices
A great drama/romance that's also a great historical drama is ELIZABETH (1998). Definitely an overlooked masterpiece of the decade with a stacked cast, with Cate Blanchett as Queen Elizabeth I absolutely owning that role like a true monarch.
my favorite PTA film
I loved this film after my first watch and immediately bought it on Blu-ray as to have in my collection. A wonderful and quiet film. ❤
Loved this watchalong with you.
I hope you do 1982's Gandhi one day, I think you would knock it right out of the park with that one!
I’d love to get to that!
@@JamesVSCinema And just so you know... I've never used that phrase with anyone, lol, just you and that selection. YOU... would be a great combo with that film. And honestly, I don't know of a better time in the world where we could use some peace and harmony.
@@JamesVSCinema I think it's Daniel Day Lewis's first flick as well!
this is my favourite PTA film as well, the music by Jonny Greenwood is brilliant and it feels so dreamy, feels like a fairy tale
There are some films that just puts you in a different space, time slows down, emotions are played out, they feel visceral and cerebral all at once. Phantom Thread is definitely a special one.
Another great reaction, if you get a chance, The Wonder is another film that gives me similar vibes. I loved the director, Sebastián Lelios work on his film Disobedience. Like PTA, the music score plays a key part in creating these spaces where you get to breathe and inhabit.
I’d love to see In the Mood for Love next if we’re talking romance/drama
I miss the old days when you use to say, "OK guys, and we just finished 'WRAPPING UP' .... and the name of the film. Always thought it was so dope !!
My favorite film of all time. So full of beauty and a fairytale sense of whimsy.
Whimsical is a great definition for this one. 🙏🏽
This is such a good movie
I love that you have a lot of "different" movies in your channel, a lot of them are forgotten jewels, so I'm glad that you give them space here.
Cheers!
Thanks for watching! Glad to get these on here!
So happy someone is reacting to this film! Do more Paul Thomas Anderson
He’s done a bit of PTA
I need to see this film. PT Anderson is one of my favorite directors, but for some reason I haven't gotten around to watching this one. To hear him say this might be his favorite PTA film speaks volumes about the director and his ability to tell outstanding stories based on mundane things such as an oil man or a dress maker - because it's not really about the oil or the dress - it's the focus on the human element, or sometimes lack thereof.
This is really the 1st review or analysis I've watched of this film and it has informed me that it is, in fact, a movie I need to see.
I also want to see the movie that looked like a lot of fun to me, but many people were down on, which is Inherent Vice.
this is one of my favorite movies EVER, probably my favorite american film right now
Happy to have it up on the channel then!
Im here for this! This is MY KINDA REACTION!!
Hahaha love that!
Such an excellent film and great performances, especially from Daniel Day-Lewis. Great reaction James, I hope you’re doing well and have a great weekend. Take care!
Thanks, you too my friend!
"Chopper" 2000. An aussie classic that's very under rated
MY FAVORITE PTA MOVIE!!!! ❤
“Hope she doesn’t accidentally poison him.” Accidentally 😏
Everything about this movie is perfect. Definitely my favorite from PTA
One of my favorites!
One of the Greatest Films ever made. It’s stunning from start to finish.
Agreed!
You put some keen filmmaker eyes on this one, PTA's finest film yet.
Hard to not give it the appreciation when it’s being poured so passionately. 🙏🏽
Apparently the idea for the movie came to PTA when he was sick and his wife was taking care of him
Those damn mushrooms.
Saw this with a bunch of friends who hated it. My experience was very much like yours.
This movie was great!!
I would love for you to react to Paul Thomas Anderson's movie INHERENT VICE (2014). I found it to be incredibly hilarious, and it was essentially a slow burn version of THE BIG LEBOWSKI.
On a side note, I am interested in his upcoming movie that he is filming now, with Leonardo DiCaprio, Regina Hall, and Sean Penn in the leads.
Oh nice I was unaware of his upcoming film! I’ll check out the other one too :)
Oh my, yesss! Vicky Krieps is Divine!
Divine is the perfect word!
Please react to Topsy-Turvy. Lesley Manville has a scene in that that will slay you.... plus it's a hoot of a film. Great story, great cast
I would like you to react to "Olive kitteridge" (4-episode HBO miniseries)!...
Love this film and I'm so glad for your reaction! As far as Drama/Romance, how much must I pay you to get you to watch Dangerous Liaisons (1987)?
There's nothing more endearing than a loved one that is poisoning you.
Phantom Thread, or: When Your Circle Small But Y'all Crazy
On the subject of love and in the way you describe it, you gonna watch some John Cassavetes! Start with A Woman Under The Influence!
Finally someone react to this masterpiece
You have a masterpiece in your profile picture too haha (vagabond)
@@JamesVSCinema game recognize game 🙏
Loved the reaction. Can you react next to Tár (2022) ?
Thank you, James! 🪡 I saw this one in the cinema. All hail, director Paul Thomas Anderson.
first! also James plz pump out Mr.Robot faster, almost no other youtuber reacts to it and your insight on the directing is amazing
Hahaha stay tuned for tomorrow! I got yall :)
I love this movie so much and I’m not sure if it’s a hot take but…I find it completely hilarious? Like is it secretly a comedy?
Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Thomas Anderson go together like bread and butter. I mean, just look at There Will Be Blood.
Exactly!
I eat your asparagus…I EAT IT UP!!!
LMFAOOO man brought some There Will Be Blood in that one 😭
Lets gooooo
We are hereeeee 🙏🏽
Am I the only one who feels like him swallowing the omelet full of venomous mushrooms after she said she wants him at her mercy is the classiest way to say "Don't talk dirty to me"? 😂
This is flirting after the age of 35 xD
“Kiss me, my girl, before I’m sick.”
Like the new hair cut.
Thanks! My locs are behind my head hahaha at this angle you can’t see it as much hahaha
@@JamesVSCinemaMy partner wears theirs the same way. Looking sharp, my friend.
Daniel Day Lewis, one of the greats
Can’t ever deny that!
Menace 2 Society will be a great choice for you.
Phantom Thread is a good film, but it reminds me of something Kieslowski would make, like Three Colors: Red, but without the depth, vision or transcendent moments. The symbolism that's being overanalyzed here is very obvious and yet larger weaknesses in the writing are being missed.
I haven’t seen that film so I can’t link what you mean too much, but I respect your comment. Hope you enjoy your day!
@@JamesVSCinema Hope you check out the Three Colors Trilogy at some point on the channel then. Blue and Red are masterpieces. White is a very good film, closer to the level of Phantom Thread, although it feels like a misfire when compared to the other 2.
Vicky is amazing in this film.
DDL = 🐐
🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
Hodor!
Daniel Day Lewis retired from acting a year after the release of the movie.
Interesting! I can see it since it’s been more recent
Woodcock is the most elegant version of toxic masculinity I’ve ever seen
Name one bad Daniel Day Lewis performance... It's not possible.
Hope you're well, brother
Thanks so much! Thriving as best I can!
Did u ever see and react to “the worst person in the world”
You want to see a good movie watch Waterloo 1970 the best movie ever made
With all do respect the the glowing reviews and comments, and I watched this fillm 3 times, and huge admiiror of actor and director...but if this is Daniek Day's Swan song, i feel really sad. Respect the love, but this is a yawner of a film. ✌️
I hate this movie so much. Like why does this even exist?
Toxicity is not cute or entertaining 🙄🙄
Who said it was supposed to be cute? Toxic people and relationships exist. Entertainment isn't the only function of art.
