YES! So glad you watched this! One of my favorite movies of the last 20 years. When I first this, coming out of the theater, I felt the same way I did after I saw Blade Runner when it came out in 1982, I felt changed or altered by it. This movie is a masterpiece, it felt like a modern Kubrick film to me in a way. Loved that you chose to show the bit where she is looking at the piece of cake on her fork. That's so much of the movie in a nutshell, where we are seeing the world from her alien and alienated POV and something familiar and mundane like a piece of cake can suddenly look strange and alien to us as well. Just an incredible film.

I'm from Glasgow where most of this was filmed. It was quite funny at the time because stories were circulating around about people seeing Johansen wandering the streets and getting in and out of vans and nobody really believed them. The crew was apparently so small they were hard to spot even in the city centre scenes.

The scene where she "unveils" her true self is one of my favourite scenes in movie history. There's just something in it that connects with me, as if you could step out of your body and look at yourself the way the world does, while the real you is just a distant, separate entity that masks itself to fit in. And yet as you look at it you can't recognise it. It's a "What am I, really? What if everyone is just like this?" moment. It makes me think of how age, gender and the husk you live in have very little to do with who you truly are.

Under The Skin is the closest thing to 2001: A Space Oddesy that has ever been seen. It’s a strange, metaphorical look into the human psychique that is very interpretive.
My favorite part about this movie is that score. It’s haunting, and creepy while being beautiful at the same time. It is one of the most underrated scores because it has such an effect on you when watching the film.

Yeah, but that movie normalizes women being allowed to do whatever evil acts they want. Her character is so bad in the movie. They agreed to not get lawyers and ... ??? She did anyway? For no reason? With no explanation? Literally just: her friend suggested it. So she's a sheep at best. Him sleeping with someone else when she didn't fuck him for a year is no where near as bad as fuckin with her kids life or his life. She's (the character) factually a bad person and the film trying to make them appear equally bad just makes it a joke.
She's good in it, but it's a bad movie with a bad message.

Under The Skin is one of the most difficult movies i've ever sat through, it's drawn out with long scenes, and some of the acting is rough around the edges...but it definitely holds up. The second time i watched it, it maintained it's unique atmosphere and tension.
Fun fact: i live in Glasgow, Scotland. Some of the scenes in the movie were filmed pretty close to where i live. I have no problem understanding the thick Glaswegian accent, as i know some people have to watch this film with subtitles to fully understand what's being said.
Under The Skin is well deserving of it's cult status, and the Special Effects are top tier.

Have you ever seen Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind? I didn't really have respect for Jim Carrey as an actor until I watched that movie. It opens up all kind of philosophical questions as to the nature of regret, the struggle with knowledge vs pain, the helpless patterns we repeat, the idea of identity as a construct. This movie is an art house indie horror film disguised as an erotic slow-burn thriller. She's basically an alien succubus who lures men to her lair in order to do...whatever it is she does with them. All your observations from the beginning were spot-on, which I guess means the movie does a great job at setting itself up. I believe the cake sequence suggests that she's not accustomed to human food. I forgot just how GOOD this film is. For some reason, my mind always lumps this one together in the "same space" as Ex Machina. Another good one to watch if you haven't seen it already.

From her perspective, she sees a human being put their life in danger for an other species (a dog in this case), then we see another human being put their life in danger trying to save him (this time its the father), finally, a complete stranger puts his life in danger to save one of them. You have to constantly ask yourself, "what is she thinking when she has these experiences". This is true Sci-Fi...and it asks the question "What is it to be human?".

The final scenes were filmed where I grew up as a kid. Also I love this movie. Some of the most subtlety ever. It conveys a wholes story and character arc through almost no dialogue or exposition. All visuals and interpretations. Terrific.

The final shot of the camera facing the sky, snow falling on the lens and breaking the fourth wall just struck me as confronting us, WE are under the skin. Under the films skin, living within it as an invasive entity until it concludes.

Mica Levi wrote the score. She’s one of the most interesting younger musicians working today. You might be interested in checking out a few of her other scores. Her most recent one was for a Columbian film called “Monos”. It’s really good. She also did the score for “Jackie” and I believe she was nominated for an Oscar for that one.
She also fronts a band called Micachu and the Shapes (then called Micachu, and now I believe they are called Good Sad Happy Bad, they keep changing their name).

I haven't watched the whole reaction yet but alot of this movie was shot in a different country and with like handheld cameras like the parts when she's driving around and talking to men. Those random men on the street that she talks to aren't actors it's just her improvising and having real conversation with them. They didn't know who like scarlett Johansson was at all. Its interesting to read about how alot of it was filmed.

Thanks for your impressions James. I really loved Under the Skin - I put it up there alongside 2001. Both are brilliant science fiction movies because there's so much about them that is curious and unknowable. The ideas are truly deep. Also love the style of cold detachment that both Glazer and Kubrick employ. So skilful and visionary. And Mica Levi's score. Genius! James, if you liked the music in this I would highly recommend seeing Monos.

The hunter becomes the hunted. The more she comes into contact with human beings, the more vulnerable she becomes as she starts to assimilate & feel. Being vulnerable is human. The soldiers on bikes are there to clean up and keep her on task and on message so to speak. Jonathan Glazer wanted to create an honestly alien eerie experience . Something the viewing public rarely gets. The mundane and ordinary juxtaposed with otherworldly horror. It divided audiences on release but it’ll go on to mythic status I believe. Glazer dared to do something different.

That blue sequence with the man "deflating" is probably one of the most unsettling horror sequences I've seen. It's not even a full jump scare, it just like triggers the part in your brain that goes "this is unnatural, I don't like it. I really don't like it".
