How to Make A Charcoal Retort Kiln

  • Using all of our forestry and sawmill by products to produce charcoal through pyrolysis with a retort kiln made from scrap.
    Uses include:
    Charcoal for cooking/smoking or barbecue
    Charcoal for Forging
    Pygas
    Charcoal for Bio Char
    Materials: Steel gas tank, 55gal drums, industrial shelving legs, scrap 2" pipe from scrapyard.

    Awesome, great job. One step higher even though other are doing bigger,your idea works at small to mid scale. Thank you for sharing and making this video. Definitely an inspand a lesson 👍🏻

      Appreciate the feedback. We thought about doing larger, but hoped that somewhat smaller materials would be easier for other people to get. If they wanted to make their own

      Yea it is. The yield is about 50-60% of the input.

    I wonder if you could save on fire wood if you put the exhaust into the firebox,

      We have it set up to where the pygas exhaust runs into the fire box. When we were cooking this batch of charcoal, there was a lot of water in the logs, so it took longer to cook and the pygas wouldn’t burn continuously. However, in our newer batches, we have been using the exhaust to burn the firebox

    Hi does it take time to ignite the wood gas?

      Yes it does. Once all the moisture is removed from the wood, then you can ignite the gas
