That's very close to what I use here in Australia. The only differences I can see is mine has slightly bigger lower vents and an angle iron tripod to lift the inner barrel off the bottom by about 50mm. I mostly burn eucalyptus branches from the trees on my property. How do you process your charcoal for use in the garden? I dampen mine a bit then put it through a mulcher (basically a small hammer mill) to crush it into small pieces. The charcoal needs to be damp, but not wet. Too dry and it turns to dust, too wet and it makes a paste that clogs up the mulcher.
Nice job, excellent charcoal. To do biochar you need to inoculate and charge that a few weeks with Water & Nitrogen (Urine, sugars) then mix if possible with compost, Worm casting, rock-powder, forest wood or other fungus sources .. ^^

Hello! Thanks for your comment. Concerning to cutting off the lid it is not big matter. Just cut off by grinder. There is no need for fitting well. But edge of inside drum should tightly laying to the bottom of outside drum. Good luck!

Bio char is actually activated charcoal. You extinguish with water to create microfractures in the charcoal. Will still work in a similar way when mixed in the soil just less efficient but last longer. Just empty my batch from yesterday. special food grade mix from local hardwood. Yummy

@@iamtmckendryI use vegetable oil to start my fire when the wood isn't super dry. Works really well. You don't need that much. I then add some alcohol bc it has a lower flame point (?) so that the fire starts with just one match. Be careful though if you add alcohol. It's quite flammable.
on the outer drum you have upper holes in line where as at the bottom you have 3 straight holes in line and i between 3 holes in traiangle shape. can you explain this holing method any particulae reason to make holes in particular shapes

@@Vegetablesasmedicine OK. I would not to name this process atmost efficient. There are big losses. First loss is due to direct up draft tube, so the hottest combastion gases go directly to the sky. You need to make doble shell aroun of your retort. The fuel must be in the inner annular spase and then gases must make a turn and go down to the bottom of outer annular passage where need to be the duct to the draft tube three times taller than now. So amount of heat transfered to the retort will increase. Second loss of heat through metall outer barrel. It would be better to use breeck wall around the retort barrel and so for outer one. Even more savings may be got if to use heat exchanger to heat incoming combastion air... It is all more complicated of course than Your device but then You would call it Very effisient production of charcoal... Good luck in Your projects!
Not the most efficient though. All that heat wasted. If your retort were to be inside an indoor stove, the heat could be used for space-heating or cooking. I make several small batches of char every night when I'm running my cleanburn woodstove - all the energy from the wood gas just adds to the heat the stove gives out, keeping the house warm and enabling me to cook, boil kettles, get bathwater and dry fruit.

Still need a good crusher without having to buy truck or truck tire. I like it really fine and then I soak in in worm juice from my vermiculture bathtub.
Burning 20 gallons worth of biomass down to ashes to char 35 gallons worth of biomass is actually the least efficient way to produce biochar. Not to mention that this method isn't very time efficient either.
How to achieve the same with less cost like this man does? The materials seem from rubbish dumps. He recycles stuffs that are no longer of use. Great man with great method. I don't like spending hundreds od dollars go buy flashy charcoal maker like the one from Switzerland that i have seen in other videos. In terms of time, i don't think he stands idly doing nothing for 9+5 hours waiting for charcoal. I love this method but not too sure how to cut off the top of the big drum to make the lid that fits well like that. I'll look further into his channel hoping to find and his vids how to make it. His methods are deserved congrats than being criticized . Is there any vids about making charcoal without generating carbon that you have seen mr? Pls provide a link. Much appreciated. @@VanLe-ex8hr Kon-Tiki / pit bur method. Google "democratisation of biochar" no materials needed except for a shovel to dig a hole in the ground. Much more biochar produced in the same amount of time and can be done from tree prunings. The method in this video is a smoky mess as can be seen in the majority of videos about this particular method, it's difficult to get all parameters right. Pit burn method is easier and can produce much higher temperatures.

Cody from codieslab did a video comparing the tort and pit method and got similar weight results at the end. { C5oI7pZpOK8 } Since it takes less money to do the pit method, its more efficient that way. But there is a difference in quality. The pit method has less crisp char when bitten into but similar absorbing properties. He also made a video of how to convert the biochar into activated carbon and test it with a titration method to compare its quality with store brand versions. { GNKeps6pIao }
Biochar is also very high in ph. I learned that the hard way when using it as a soil substrate alternative. My water nutrient ph whent from 6.4 to 11 in three days, even though I rinsed it twice before using it. Today, I just finished boiling it for three hours with some ph-down chemicals and hopefully it would stabilize the ph.

Hi do you add wood only at the beginning or do you add more wood to the burning area in the middle of the burn process to keep the fire going?

Thanks for your comment. I inoculate biochar with microbes such as lactobacillus and yeast liquid. You can just put a biochar to your compost pile.
