The 10% service charge goes into a "trunco" which is a tip pool and divided according to job performed. It is a mandatory "tip", however, so include that in your tip calculation. For that reason, I usually only leave an additional 5 to 10 % with good service.

I have never been there, but you gave a very detailed explanation. Even though I could not automatically convert the peso prices, I did get an approximate idea.
Great video on DR expenses. I have been pondering the idea of moving to the DR so this is very helpful. I have a question for you about whether or not you’ve seen couples who have a big age difference. I’ve been told that ot is common to see this in the DR.
Love your videos, very informative and fun to watch, especially as I'm planning to move to the DR! Also, I have a question, although it's not exactly on the topic of this video, are there places in Santiago to meet with other expats? Is that a thing?
thanks so much for watching! There is a FB group “expats living in the DR” that i am part of, where I have found some other expats in Santiago! there are more in santo domingo and the coasts, but i have some expat friends in santiago too:)
in Belgium the price of gas is around 1.6 € a L wich would translate to 6.048 € a gallon or 6.5 USD a gallon X) i find the dominican prices very affordable ahaha
Fya S i’m sorry i never saw this! the schools are not great. i would definitely recommend a private or international school. there are some good ones in the bigger/more touristy cities!
If you are going to live in Santiago the best school is the Instituto Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes, you can be there if you take an exam and you don't have to pay but is the best place
I wonder what is the cost to move to Santiago or San Pedro in the campo? I am Dominican but raised in NY. My husband and I want to move there to the campo and grow our own food and raise chickens for eggs. We are vegetarian but don’t consume dairy. We would be moving with our kids. We’re trying to figure out the cost and what to do for work over there. I am a nurse and he is a contractor. We would be shipping our own car. He already has a DR ID I would just need to get mine here. Do you know if you can buy a house in the campo or do you have to build it? We were planning to do it within the next year or two God willing.
Can you make an updated cost of living video with putting American dollars to Dominican pesos with talking about all the costs Thank you and I love your videos and your hair looks amazing
$1500 - 2000 more than enough; with that much you could even go to all-inclusive hotels quite often if you're in for that. Everything else pretty much accurate (native Dominican speaking).
We are going to move to DR because of work. We'll be staying outside Punta Cana. With six persons, my wife and I plus four kids (9-12-16-17) what would we need approx. per month if we live a comfortable life ? What about education costs ?
oh thats hard for me since i never had to budget for kids. Education is expensive because they will need to be in an international or private school because public ones are terrible. Those are typically 5K a year per student more or less. It depends if you’re eating local or imported food, as well as entertainment and comfort costs. I would say you would need about 3,000 to be comfortable with food, living, and school!
Thanks for the info! I plan to go live and either study/teach beginning this September. You mentioned peanut butter & almond milk are expensive. How about other nuts? Are there inexpensive nuts? fruits? How much are young coconuts? Thanks in advance!
How exciting!! Nuts are expensive as well generally...I would recommend bringing some with you ! Fruit is SO CHEAP though if it’s local! So many great ones, same with coconuts and vegetables so that’s good. I’m sure some nuts could be cheaper but generally they’re expensive.
@@MillsRepDom Thanks for the response! Ive been eating a whole plant based diet since 2011. Lived in Togo (West Africa) for a year as well. Im excited to try DR's local fruits & veggies. My biggest concern is pork in dishes, especially beans.

I was checking prices on airbnb, its ripoff, its clear its geared towards gringos You mentioned corotos.com.do as the best places to get long term rental apartment at local prices. Are bills included in advertised price and can it be negotiated down? Contract period,1 year?
yeah airbnb is deff for tourists although some do a good discount for longer term. corotos is much better. there are some leases for 6 months or 9. utilities are typically not covered in the rent price and you need to put down one month security and one month rent, sometimes two. also some places will charge you to go on a viewing with a realtor.
raul martinez hi, It definitely depends on the area you are in. In my case, I didn’t walk around at night alone, otherwise during the day i did. I just didn’t walk around with a ton of money or my phone waving around. I never had any issues at all. I’ve had friends who had some of their things taken on the street but nothing violent. I would just take normal precautions depending what area you’re in.
Thanks for the videos. They are helpful. What is the best way to pay bills? Should I use credit cards or cash? Do I need a DR bank account? Do I have to notify the Gov. about my income? I am planning a move to the DR to live and I am in the final planning stage. Any advice you can give would be great. thank you.
L Rees i’m so sorry i didn’t see this! I pay my bills here with my local popular bank account, but the ones i still have in the states are on autopay from my US accounts. you don’t need a DR bank account tho, i barely use mine at all now! i did but my salary from teaching here into my US tax return but it didn’t affect it at all because it was so low lol. let me know if you have any questions! you can always shoot me a message on instagram @rebeccamillsss if that works for you!
Sure! So I knew that I wanted to be in Jarabacoa, so I just looked up local schools there, and then contacted the schools directly asking if they were hiring if I didnt see a post on their site or anything. But if you are flexible on the area, I would suggest looking on Dave's ESL cafe, CIEE, teachaway, gooverseas and those have some postings as well!
meds ?. if you can help me i m interested more in smaller little Town on coast not invasion of tourist . what would you recommended and I do not get it bout part you mentioned FREEZING?! PLANNING TO MOVE .Is tech like laptop printers mobiles expensive ?
definitely check out las terrenas, cabrera, samaná and cabarete. there are phones here but i would bring one with you that’s unlocked so you can get a local sim card. i would bring a computer as well as it’s hard to find good ones here.
Hi so I’m really wanted to move out there couple years, going to school Do you have any information on good schools for nursing or physician assistant Also do you have any websites to look for part time jobs and apartments
Apartments I definitely recommend corotos.com! Part time jobs are harder to find online but you could teach English at an institute or tutor on the side. The best college is PUCMM in santiago in my opinion
Is there a walmart down tbere or target ?. Can you get dip like skole down there ?. Siemens is sending me down there for a few months . I dont know whats available down there i am bringing what skole i will need i gess i will bring peanut butter too thank you for making this
Whats the best way to find a nice furnished modern apartment without getting ripped off paying Gringo prices on Airbnb? Best ways to meet a nice girl in Santiago? Thanks so much
Check out corotos.com! it’s a local site and you can search by area and price. sometimes you have to pay to tour places but that’s standard, and only if it’s a realtor. Take a dominican with you if you can, or try to find a place through friends. Corotos was good though!! For meeting girls..also through friends is easiest, but bars and restaurants and gyms are good too. Girls don’t usually approach guys here, so you’ll have to do it. If you can make some good friends first then it’s easier to be in a group or meet a girl through them.
@PhyZeik Just remember its all depend which city you move in. I travel to Santo Domingo(capital) and the tempeture(90-95) its a little more than that due to the development the city has. Drink a lot of water or cerveza presidente(if you not gonna drive.lol), and avoid the sun @ 12-2pm, its extremetly hot.
I'm from México, but o have visited the RD,and comparing México to the RD,is so expensive!! there, even buying your food and cook for your self instead of going out,is expensive,I think it will have been a lot better for you to give all the prices in dollars ;-)
I am doing price conversions of some things as you speak. From what it sounds it is about the same here in the US, in some cases a little cheaper. It might have been a while since you have seen pricing in the US, but it sounds much cheaper in DR than here in the states.
It is! I made an updated video with US pricing if it helps. It definitely depends what you’re buying, if mostly imported things, it will add up. Otherwise buying locally made things keeps cost way down!
Amazing Video !!! :-) Are there good English speaking schools for a kid in Santiago de Los Caballeros ? I need a really nice apartment near a private Elementary school. Oh, about how much for a to 2 bed 2 bath aprox. Thanks

Hi Mills,
thanks again for all of the info. I’m 99% I’m moving to DR in October.
Do you mind setting up a time to call/video chat next week?
My email is gfdm88 AT gmail.
My fone is:
+ won (Slx for slx) for oh seven -
Seven for seven nlne
It would really mean a lot!
Gregory
Gregory M hey sure! Can you shoot me an email at mills1019@gmail.com?
Also, could you do a video about how you manage your money (do you bank there or online)?
Annika Ehrig yes!! i think i talked about this too...maybe the finances of moving abroad? but i’ll touch on it again:)
Nice video
thanks!!
Can you make a video about driving? I know it’s crazy down there.
Annika Ehrig yeah! i talk a little about it in the “5 things i hate about living in the DR” video, but i can do more too!
Driving in the DR is out of this world,
👍🏾
But 400 USD is cheap compare to USA prices
definitely!! I have since moved out but you can find much cheaper too!
Still.. It's third world and you can't work
Very good info, your prices kindof jump around a little tho. From pesos to dollars. Maybe just give one or the other
Thanks! I made an updated video all in dollars!
Good info
I already have a car and will probably ship it over there
❤
Great in fo I stayed 20 days there love it there
I was checking prices on airbnb, its ripoff, its clear its geared towards gringos
You mentioned corotos.com.do as the best places to get long term rental apartment at local prices.
Hi Mills, are you going to return back? And if so, what town are you going back to?
yes i will! I'll be going back to santiago:)
MILLS AROUND.....Santiago city....el monumeeeento...ciudad corazón ❤❤❤❤RD.
Mills Around can you please describe with deteals how is the public security , what is like to move around the street at night etc.etc.
raul martinez hi, It definitely depends on the area you are in.
@@MillsRepDom Thanks much. That was helpful. Best wishes.
Nice :)
Definitely went up since you posted this. Lol
yes🥴😩😩
Do you have a Dominican realtor to transition over there?
Kareen Mondesir i didn’t until santiago! my fiancé’s cousin is a realtor so she helped with the contract on my apartment there!
mills, what if hold dual citizenship? can I work? what's paperwork need it?
I'm just wondering HOW/where you found the teaching job you got and had for your first year. Are their specific websites or sources you could share ?
@@MillsRepDom Thanks so much! I will take a look!
How do you find these apartments? Any particular company you recommend?
Zuly Bullock i recommend using the site corotos.com!
How much for a lot of Land in country side
meds ?. if you can help me i m interested more in smaller little Town on coast not invasion of tourist . what would you recommended and I do not get it bout part you mentioned FREEZING?!
Thank so much .
RD.......................................🇩🇴..

Hi Mills, 1500 usd per month is a good amount if you dont have to pay for accomodation?
mrjeudnews i think so! most people live on 200 here. but for a more comfortable lifestyle that’s great! especially if you don’t need to pay rent!
@@MillsRepDom I worked in Data Vimenca. I got about 500USD a month working the late shift. It paid for my motorbike.
Did u say u pay $70 bucks a month rent?
Edward Rucker in jarabacoa i did!! hahah
Like I said before you were Dominican in another life
hahah i agree😂
So you mean to tell me that for $1500 @ month I can pay rent, go out, eat and pay bills ? Please take my money
Yes you cannnnn💃🏻💃🏻
HEY MILLS ,AND THANKS FOR THE INFO ..I HERE IN ARIZONA THEY HAVE RABID FOXS ATTACKING HUMANS ,BECAREFUL OUT AT THE FAM’s HOUSE ..
i havent heard of that! but ill be on the lookout
Hi so I’m really wanted to move out there couple years, going to school
Do you have any information on good schools for nursing or physician assistant
Also do you have any websites to look for part time jobs and apartments
Apartments I definitely recommend corotos.com! Part time jobs are harder to find online but you could teach English at an institute or tutor on the side. The best college is PUCMM in santiago in my opinion
Hi, how do you go about finding honest, reliable housekeeper?
what area are you from?
It only costs 4 dollars to unlock your phones
Is there a walmart down tbere or target ?. Can you get dip like skole down there ?. Siemens is sending me down there for a few months . I dont know whats available down there i am bringing what skole i will need i gess i will bring peanut butter too thank you for making this
No target, they have JUMBO.
How do you drive legally there without residency?
I carried my American license with me
Mills I heard it’s only legal with tourist visa that’s 30 days. After that it’s illegal??
If you can make some good friends first then it’s easier to be in a group or meet a girl through them.
has Santiago fast internet and similar to Santo Domingo?
Yes
What kind of jobs could a gringo get there if he speaks also some languages too?
i subscrived
thank you!
Colmado
What neighborhood do you live in in Santiago
Stallion right near vill olga
Whats all the dollar amount what you say??
50 pesos = $1.
I made an updated cost of living video!
Is there the Walmart store?
Nope. We got one called Jumbo. It's our Walmart
no there is no walmart! but there is one called jumbo that’s similar, as well as la sirena. There is also pricesmart that’s like costco.
How much for a beer at a bar?
Felipe Izumi very cheap, like 40-100 pesos depending where you are, or 1-2 dollars.
@@MillsRepDom thank you!
What about the weather?
weather is a big one! very humid! but usually sunny and between 75-85!
@PhyZeik Yes. In the big cities. You can find better weather(cooler) in the more ceter city like Jarabacoa o Contanza.
I'm from México, but o have visited the RD,and comparing México to the RD,is so expensive!! there, even buying your food and cook for your self instead of going out,is expensive,I think it will have been a lot better for you to give all the prices in dollars ;-)
it definitely can be. especially depending on what you buy! i’ll try to do that:)
Mills mentioned the exchange rate. You just have to davide it by the exchage which is RD$50÷$1.
is expensive cute lady I visit Dr like 6 times
I visit santo domingo boca chica .and la romana is expensive are u single ?
I am doing price conversions of some things as you speak. From what it sounds it is about the same here in the US, in some cases a little cheaper.
It might have been a while since you have seen pricing in the US, but it sounds much cheaper in DR than here in the states.
It is! I made an updated video with US pricing if it helps. It definitely depends what you’re buying, if mostly imported things, it will add up. Otherwise buying locally made things keeps cost way down!
Buscando un mereno nlol
100dr pesos = almost $2
Exactly!
Awesome! I need a calculative tight-fisted wife like you! Cheers ;)
Hahaha im sure you’ll find her!
Nice video and you are very pretty.
Watch out with those tigueres over there
God bless you
hahah gracias!
JUAN ZAPATA.....ELLA TIENE SU TIGUERE YA CIBAEÑO....ES DECIR NO HAY PA NADIE.
Amazing Video !!! :-) Are there good English speaking schools for a kid in Santiago de Los Caballeros ? I need a really nice apartment near a private Elementary school. Oh, about how much for a to 2 bed 2 bath aprox. Thanks
thanks!! Check out new horizons and santiago christian school! 2 bed 2 bath unfurnished would be about 200 per month in a pretty good area
ONE QUESTION MILLS ,DO THEY HAVE TURKEY BACON OR TURKEY SAUSAGE IN THE DR SUPERMARKETS ,I DONT EAT PORK OR BEEF. 🤔
Yes! I have seen it in the bigger ones, like Bravo, Nacional, Jumbo and Pricesmart! Bit pricier, but available
Mills Around @ thanks a lot MILLS,.VERY NICE TO KNOW 👍🏽 ,AND KEEP UP WITH THE GREAT INFO
You talking to people in the states you breaking everything down but you keep saying the cost in pesos. Say what the pesos equal to the US dollar everyone watching don't know the exchange pesos to the US dollar.
i said in the beginning the exchange i thought it would be easier for people but i got too many comments like this so i remade this video.
Please use dollars amounts not pesos as that is not pertinent information
J Ac i made an updated one in dollars check it out. But it is pertinent if you’re living there to learn the currency.
You sound so negative about DR most of what you say is not true if your so negative about DR just stay in your country
What? In what way am I negative about DR? Yikes I think you need to listen more carefully
