I was having connection issues using an old mini b USB cable, the Garmin 52 and a Windows 7 laptop. Perhaps the cable was only for charging. The laptop and installed Garmin Express couldn't find the Garmin unit. I went to Best Buy and got the $12.99 3' Insignia brand "USB 2.0 A to Mini B cable" model NS-PU035AM. After hooking up and unplugging the USB side and replugging, I finally found success.Thank goodness I got connected fast and was able to upgrade the map with the Insignia cable.
I had the same issue with my old Zumo 550. It had been connecting fine for years then suddenly stopped. I tried everything and even hard reset the device. Then I tried a different cable and it connected instantly. Some USB cables do seem to have a life span. Could be down to cleaning the contacts either. Always best to check the cable before moving on to checking everything else.
Having read many of the comments, I should point out that Garmin had a consumer division and an aviation division. If the consumer guys were writing aviation software, it would be “raining aluminum”
When updating my gps, I go through all the steps and I press install updates. The bar half fills and then says “there was an error installing”. What do I do?
I use garmin and navionics on my boat for navigation and tbh navionics is far easier to update i have tried to update a g3 bluechart but could not do it,i even gave control of my pc to a garmin agent and they could not do it.....so if they struggle with it then what hope do we have !!!
Beware, this software is soooo buggy you will most likely not be able to connect your gps to it. Garmin, please fix this issue that has been plaguing your software.
The program Garmin express does not find my garmin deivce but the "connection sound" it makes when connecting does come. What should i do? i tried hard reseting did not work. This problem accured when i pressed the reset button on the back side. My garmin device is Garmin Nuvi 660. Thanks in advanced.
First thing to do is try using a different USB port on your computer. If that doesn't work see if you can try it on another computer. Sometimes there are quirks with how devices are detected.
Hi, I have a problem with the update. Garmin nuvi 1200. When I need to unplug the device from the pc then the device restarts and tells me that the loader loading. Will not update the device. I have to reset it to try again, again and again. Somewhere I'm wrong. Or is a mistake in garmin. When I unplug the device I just unplug from the pc, I do not push the button on the device to restart it. Do You have any idea how to help me? Thank you.
I just bought a Garmin 60, paid enough money for it, hate it. I like the older model. I have a question..I have a dot on my screen, wont go away, nothing else there, wont go back to menu..what to do??
Hold down the power key for 12 seconds to reset the device. From there install the latest software update. If it keeps failing return it under warranty either for a refund or a replacement device.
hi does it keep the Favorite addresses safe in case I install the map updates and new device software/firmware? I really need to update everything on it, but I'm afraid I'd lose the favorites.
Hi, Map and Software updates don't affect your favourites so just go for it. If you want to back up your favourites just for peace of mind there are a few options. 1st if your device supports a memory card, insert one then go to Favourites --> Share --> Memory card. Then select all and it will copy them to the memory card. To restore them later put the memory card back in and go to Favourites --> Import --> Memory card. 2nd to back up using a computer, connect your Garmin to your computer and browse to it then go to, Internal Storage --> GPX --> Current GPX. Copy Current GPX to your computer. If you need to restore it at a late date just copy the backed up Current.GPX back into the GPX folder.
Yes it's not perfect. This isn't a new problem though. Since the dawn of USB there have been idiosyncrasies when connecting certain hardware. Great that you got it working in the end.
hello and thanks for very instructive video. Do you know where I could by battery for Zumo 550? I belive it is dead, since nothing happens when I try to turn it on, when I connect to the charger, nothing happens when I connect to the PC neither. So I think I have to repalce it.
+divermg Hi. It's most likely crashed. A friend of mine had the same problem. Connect it to a power supply (or USB to PC) then press and hold Power and +. It will reset and then will power on. It should power on even if the battery is shot because it's connected to the power supply or USB. Once you've reset it you'll be able to tell if the battery is shot. If you need a replacement battery you can order one from ebay. There don't seem to be any on the Garmin site any more. I have fond memories of my 550 before I sold it. Good solid device.
+jobybyrne hello again and thanks for the answer. I do belive the device is dead. I dit what you suggested, but nothing happend when I pressed power and +. I tried for shot period of time, I tried to hold those buttions for a minute, but nothing, no reset or anything on the screen. I bought and got new battery, installed instead of the old one, charged, but nothing. OK, when it's gone, it's gone :-( I'll try to charge it tonight normally, not via PC, so I'll see what is going to happen tomorrow. Thanks anyway!
+divermg If it is completely dead then contact Garmin. I know it's out of warranty but they may exchange it for a refurbished one. They are really good with their warranties and aftersales service. They give you an address to send it to and then send a working one back to you. Definitely contact them as you've got nothing to lose.
@jobybyrne my navigator v needs updating, I've followed all the steps but on re connecting it I get the power on screen but it won't show as being "connected" and doesn't appear to be doing anything??? Do I leave it for hours or try it again? It is not showing as even being connected as an external drive on my Mac cheers buddy, great videos
Hi Barney. If it's doing nothing I'd suggest a soft reset. That's usually done by holding the power button down till it starts up (or just take the battery out). From there you should be able to connect it to the computer again. Maybe it crashed on boot.
Heres the next query then jobybyrne now the maps are all updated, its connected and I've created route (having followed another one of your vids :) ) I've sent it to my device and it displays a different route than what I designed. Ends up at the same destination but it's not the way i want to get there....
This is because when you import the map to the device it recalculates it to run on the on board map. Sometimes it will appear differently to the route you created on your computer because of this recalculation. If you update the route on your PC and add more points / waypoints and then send it to the device again, it should be a truer reflection of the route on your computer. Also check the activity profile you are using on the device. "Driving" is probably best for imported routes as it has fewer avoidances than some of the other profiles.
I'm not sure what *Dashboard Glass* is. It could be an update to the graphics perhaps. *Green Arrow* is just a new icon you can use on the map instead of using a vehicle. Some of the others are additional text to speech voices that do different text to speech accents like American English Michelle and New Zealand English Jack. In my case British English Emily and I have been on the road for so long that I could never leave her.
@@JosephByrne yeah i get that but the way I do it now is download software updates to 1 SD card and have maps on another. When i start the unit i update. I was wondering if i could put it all on 1 SD card. Maybe i need clarification too, why does it have 2 slots? What do 2 slots do?
I know the 660 has a photo viewer but I don't know if it can read Geo tagging data from those photos. If the photo has been Geolocation tagged you can view this data in the pictures properties on a PC (or on some cameras and phones). That will give you the longitude and latitude coordinates. On the Zumo you can select, *Where to --> Coordinates* and type in the coordinates there. Then the Zumo will navigate you to that location. If the final location is not on a navigable road it'll take you as close as possible then advise to *Navigate Off road.*
From the manual... You can load pictures that include location information on your zumo or on a memory card, and then create routes to them...there is a link that doesn't work connect.garmin.com/photos, my cell phone and pocket camera both log the location via GPS
Ah ha right. I'm thinking if you upload a photo to the 660 with Geolocation enabled you should be able to open the photo and there should be a context menu you can open with the option to navigate to it. Or it may be a case that you select a check box next to the photo on the Zumo and then click navigate to. I've not owned a 660 for a while but I'm guessing it would work in that way. If you can't get it to work we can set up a skype call or something to look at it.
hi. i can not connect my Vivosmart HR to garmin express. so there are 3 steps to connect it, these are: 1) Account; 2) Settings; and 3) Profile. it says i have to complete my profile but i am stuck with step 2 which is settings because there is no option that i can click on to continue to step 3. Hope you can help me with this.
If you can live with the map being on an external SD card, buy them from Amazon, slip the card into the SD card slot on your device, and you're set. If you want the Europe map to live in internal storage on the device (I did) you have to buy and download the additional map from Garmin. More expensive that way, but it was worth it to me to have it on the device so that things worked better for me when using Basecamp to create my own maps. I then have a 16 gb SD card in the card slot, so a total of 32 gb storage on my DriveSmart 61, which I think will serve me just fine.
I think those have to be done over Wifi. To use Garmin express you need to connect the device to a computer using a USB cable. I don't think it's possible with integrated units.
The car detected the USB and put garmin information on it. Now the garmin express doesn't detect the USB Windows detects it easily. Is it some special USB I need or any one will do
Any standard USB cable will do. If you have issues connecting the first thing to do is try a different cable. On my old 550 which had been working well for years it stopped connecting to the computer. I tried everything, full reset, different computer then tried a different cable and the cable was the issue.

Unless we're all on the same computer, it's a Garmin issue. Be it with Garmin's software or hardware itself. I have the exact same issue and have run into almost 10 others with the same problem. I'm done with Garmin. They know about the problems and are doing nothing but continuing to promote their products like nothing is wrong.
Well their marketing and development departments are probably not closely connected. Also like any organisation they won't spend marketing budget promoting their software issues. Have you spoken to their support directly? Sometimes there are settings you can change in Windows that resolve the issue. There is also a helpful community on Zumoforums.com. I've not had many issues at all getting the software working so it doesn't seem to be across the board.
I contacted Garmin Support and we went through several diagnostics and we even tried a second computer, end result was they said to return the unit after an hour on the phone. It was a fast turn around but here's the deal, I purchased a brand new unit in December of last year, I sent it back for service (in the nice new original box and paid $14.00 shipping) and they sent me someone else's refurbished unit wrapped in bubbles in a plane brown box. I guess I should have bought refurbished unit in the first place and saved a hundred bucks.
It must have come with a USA map. You'll need to acquire a Canadian map and load it onto the device. I'd suggest contacting Garmin to see if they'll give you one as a gesture of good will. Failing that you may need to purchase it.
Help, gone through installation and now my garmin is frozen and my windows 10 is taking ages to open with onscreen message getting Windows ready . Don't turn off your computer!
Trying to install v4.4.0.0 it simply doesn't work! Have tried reinstall, disabled software protection and microsoft fix tool. Feel like I'm just wasting my time.
GARMIN DriveSmart 50 .. First install of updates from New .. Using Mac version. When it got to Step 2 of 4 Restart your DEVICE .. After Ejecting the Device from my Desktop; then unplugging as the On-Screen Instructions. I waited the 5 seconds ;; plugged it back in ( This Video, then shows the DEVICE being recognised round 4.06 on this video .. it then shows the DEVICE connected and a GREEN DOT showing CONNECTED ) Mine did not .. I left it .. The On-Screen Instructions say to press the on/off button on the DEVICE if it doesn't come on . Did this .. It then came on .. but still showed as NOT CONNECTED ... I left it for 15 mins .. I was just about to unplug when it showed on the GARMIN updating Maps. Then the GARMIN showed GREEN DOT Connected .. and showed on my Desktop. It did say it would take 1 hour 18 mins to update. I have a Fast connection and it took .. 18 mins in all to update everything. UK . Ireland and FULL Europe ( For now .. BREXIT ) .. btw .. Charging the GARMIN .. If you use a Computer to charge your GARMIN via USB it will take sometime. You can't use any old USB charger .. It detects some third party Chargers and tell you it's not charging. I found a SAMSUNG USB Phone Charger Works. You can buy a GARMIN CHARGER 3 PIN and EUROPE Mains Charger for £20 .. or buy the EUROPE one with just the TWO PINS .. Costs £10 .. and use a 3 PIN Adaptor ( HALFORDS .. other stores are available ) Full Charge using Mains Adaptor takes around 4 / 5 hours first time around. 9 There is a Maintenance mode on the GARMIN .. shows charge rate etc .. With the UNIT turned on. Press and Hold your finger on the GARMIN BATTERY ICON .. then the Maintenance mode / charge rate should show. If your unsure .. Leave it alone.

Only wish Microsoft would work with an older device, the Nuvi 2797 runs great as a backup. I have Linux, yet, no drivers for Linux. Time to consider no garmin too
I have a NuviCam LM and it works very good as a dashCam and GPS. BUT the Garmin Express Software is a load of Rubbish, since I have had the unit I am unable to update or upload anything from their site. So happily I am driving around with an outdated map and information.... So unless (now 2 years) they get their software sorted I am going to get a Tom Tom. For the price it is an expensive load of junk.....
That's unfortunate. Can you use a friends computer to install Garmin Express and get the updates? It's not ideal but at least you'd have the latest maps. I'm hoping Garmin will start to bring out devices with better wireless capabilities so that you can install the updates by connecting to a wireless network.

Well thank-you. Today I got a NUVI 2559 LM because my original NUVI 2595 (3 years old) had died on me. Yesterday I connected the new device to my Laptop (USB) and assumed it was powering up overnight. Nobody tells you how long this is supposed to take but it worked - now I've moved on and everything is working fine. I made my first trip - back to the tech store to buy a Micro SD. 'Cos Garmin Express had informed me there was not enough memory on the device - the new one I'd just bought - to perform updates. Hmm...
Sounds like the battery is shot. There is a battery indicator on the home screen but if it keeps shutting down all the time when it's not connected to power that'll be a battery issue.
Our internet connection is super slow, so updating anything takes 30 hours plus... Plus my Mac is 10 years old and not quick anymore either. I wish I would have just stuck with my google maps on my phone, that one is accurate. I tried to type in a street address on the Garmin Drive 51 USA LM and the device couldn't find it! The street and business has been there for 55 years! Mind boggling.... It seems with Garmin you have to do everything yourself and with Google, speak and it routes!
That is unfortunate. Future devices should be wifi enabled so you can download updates directly to the device. If your internet is slow you could connect to a public service instead. Boston city Centre for example has free Wifi and so do most McDonalds in Europe.

The thing that tripped me up for awhile is how to get the Garmin device to reliably connect to the computer. What I've found for my DriveSmart 61 is (1) turn the Garmin off by pressing and holding the power button, (2) plug the USB cable into the computer, (3) plug the USB cable into the Garmin, (4) let the "USB connection detected" countdown screen run down on its own and watch for a change in the Garmin screen that indicates it's connected to the computer, and (5) watch/listen for a screen or tone that indicates a successful USB device connected to the computer. If you have the settings on Garmin Express set to "Automatically launch Garmin Express whan a Garmin device is connected," Express will then open; another good indication that the connection is made.
i wanted to update my vivoactive hr because of problems by reconnect my mobilephone (2-3 times ok, then never possible), but i'm a linux user and garmin has no support for this system. so i took a windows pc.... the installation of garminexpress is no express ! but after this... there is a bug, too. allways the same display update is to install. my bugs are sill buggy. i'm a garmin-user since more than 10 years but a device and service like this i never had. #bad #bad #bad
This video is 8 years old. The latest Garmin devices are WiFi enabled so can be updated directly and don't require a smart phone. Also ease up on the excessive punctuation.
Do you have a Lifetime Map Subscription with your device. You can usually tell if you have that if there is an LM at the end of the device name, e.g. Zumo 590LM. If you don't have Lifetime Maps you have to pay to install the latest map.
YEAH...I have a Garmin Nuvi 1490T, everything was working fine up until I got in the car and it said my Maps need updating...Now I am on Day 3 of just to even trying to get it back to the state it was in before the Update...It comes with LifeTime Updates, I Guess Garmin's Criteria for LifeTime is whatever they decide it should be, Give me Back what I paid For! This thing has worked well up until the Update...
I understand Garmin is in financial trouble and now it's probably affecting the Garmin Express site............I can't download any map updates. I have purchased my last Garmin device. So sad, they were a good company.
The process is the same for most Garmin devices including their action cameras. Although for a camera there aren't any map updates only software updates.
To think I was considering purchasing a Zumo for my motorcycle for these worthless Garmins. Garmin has gone down the tubes. Garmin is something I avoid entirely now.
Thanks for trying to help. I have a Quest 2 that I had to install a new battery in order to connect to computer. Went through all the steps to get to a download. Download hung up at 2 minutes for over an hour. No way to abort without closing program. After I gave up was stuck with error message that required me to reopen the unit to disconnect the battery to allow the unit to reset.
Don't. Syncing with Express wrecked my forerunner 220. Buy a device that van run garmin connect, IMO Express is at best a forgotten piece of software which doesn't work and at worst will actively destroy your devices.
Contact Garmin and get it replaced under warranty. You need Garmin express to update some of the older devices and also to install some of the bigger updates on older devices.
LOL! If you have windows 10, just stay away from Garmin. They have problems with the updates and haven't figured it out. Some are getting it done, and many are not. If you wanna play the odds that you are that tech savvy - knock yourself out! The easy updates from yesteryear are over if you have windows 10. I have the nuvi 2689. 2nd one! so many problems. Google updates with windows 10 and garmin express. read it for yourself.

In the first instance try using a different USB port on the laptop, if that doesn't work try a different USB cable. If that doesn't work try it on a different computer.

Please note that Garmin will not allow you to download or use any of their apps, even if you do own their products, unless you are willing to set up an account with them. Please note that Garmin will make it as difficult as possible for you to set up said account!

It won't find my device for some reason? although it does say device found but cannot add it due to server problems... any solutions?/

If you need a replacement battery you can order one from ebay. There don't seem to be any on the Garmin site any more. I have fond memories of my 550 before I sold it. Good solid device.
+jobybyrne hello again and thanks for the answer. I do belive the device is dead. I dit what you suggested, but nothing happend when I pressed power and +. I tried for shot period of time, I tried to hold those buttions for a minute, but nothing, no reset or anything on the screen. I bought and got new battery, installed instead of the old one, charged, but nothing. OK, when it's gone, it's gone :-( I'll try to charge it tonight normally, not via PC, so I'll see what is going to happen tomorrow. Thanks anyway!
+divermg If it is completely dead then contact Garmin. I know it's out of warranty but they may exchange it for a refurbished one. They are really good with their warranties and aftersales service. They give you an address to send it to and then send a working one back to you. Definitely contact them as you've got nothing to lose.

@jobybyrne my navigator v needs updating, I've followed all the steps but on re connecting it I get the power on screen but it won't show as being "connected" and doesn't appear to be doing anything??? Hi Barney. If it's doing nothing I'd suggest a soft reset. That's usually done by holding the power button down till it starts up (or just take the battery out). From there you should be able to connect it to the computer again. Maybe it crashed on boot.

Heres the next query then jobybyrne now the maps are all updated, its connected and I've created route (having followed another one of your vids :) ) I've sent it to my device and it displays a different route than what I designed. Ends up at the same destination but it's not the way i want to get there....
This is because when you import the map to the device it recalculates it to run on the on board map. Sometimes it will appear differently to the route you created on your computer because of this recalculation. If you update the route on your PC and add more points / waypoints and then send it to the device again, it should be a truer reflection of the route on your computer. Also check the activity profile you are using on the device. "Driving" is probably best for imported routes as it has fewer avoidances than some of the other profiles.
What do the other updates do? ie: Dashboard glass 480x272, Vehicle 3D arrow green etc.
I'm not sure what *Dashboard Glass* is. It could be an update to the graphics perhaps. *Green Arrow* is just a new icon you can use on the map instead of using a vehicle. Some of the others are additional text to speech voices that do different text to speech accents like American English Michelle and New Zealand English Jack. In my case British English Emily and I have been on the road for so long that I could never leave her.

Software updates always go directly into the device. Maps can be on the device or on an SD card.
@@JosephByrne yeah i get that but the way I do it now is download software updates to 1 SD card and have maps on another. When i start the unit i update. I was wondering if i could put it all on 1 SD card. Maybe i need clarification too, why does it have 2 slots? What do 2 slots do?

sorry to bump your post, but do you know how to add location data to a photo so that when in the zumo 660 you can route to the location of the photo?
I know the 660 has a photo viewer but I don't know if it can read Geo tagging data from those photos. If the photo has been Geolocation tagged you can view this data in the pictures properties on a PC (or on some cameras and phones). That will give you the longitude and latitude coordinates. On the Zumo you can select, *Where to --> Coordinates* and type in the coordinates there. Then the Zumo will navigate you to that location. If the final location is not on a navigable road it'll take you as close as possible then advise to *Navigate Off road.*
From the manual... You can load pictures that include location information on your zumo or on a memory card, and then create routes to them...there is a link that doesn't work connect.garmin.com/photos, my cell phone and pocket camera both log the location via GPS
Ah ha right. I'm thinking if you upload a photo to the 660 with Geolocation enabled you should be able to open the photo and there should be a context menu you can open with the option to navigate to it. Or it may be a case that you select a check box next to the photo on the Zumo and then click navigate to. I've not owned a 660 for a while but I'm guessing it would work in that way. If you can't get it to work we can set up a skype call or something to look at it.

hi. i can not connect my Vivosmart HR to garmin express. so there are 3 steps to connect it, these are: 1) Account; 2) Settings; and 3) Profile. it says i have to complete my profile but i am stuck with step 2 which is settings because there is no option that i can click on to continue to step 3. If you can live with the map being on an external SD card, buy them from Amazon, slip the card into the SD card slot on your device, and you're set. If you want the Europe map to live in internal storage on the device (I did) you have to buy and download the additional map from Garmin. More expensive that way, but it was worth it to me to have it on the device so that things worked better for me when using Basecamp to create my own maps. I then have a 16 gb SD card in the card slot, so a total of 32 gb storage on my DriveSmart 61, which I think will serve me just fine.

I think those have to be done over Wifi. To use Garmin express you need to connect the device to a computer using a USB cable. I don't think it's possible with integrated units.
The car detected the USB and put garmin information on it. Now the garmin express doesn't detect the USB Windows detects it easily. Is it some special USB I need or any one will do
Any standard USB cable will do. If you have issues connecting the first thing to do is try a different cable. On my old 550 which had been working well for years it stopped connecting to the computer. I tried everything, full reset, different computer then tried a different cable and the cable was the issue.

Most likely an issue on the computer side. Can you try connecting it to another USB port or try with another computer?
Unless we're all on the same computer, it's a Garmin issue. Be it with Garmin's software or hardware itself. I have the exact same issue and have run into almost 10 others with the same problem. I'm done with Garmin. They know about the problems and are doing nothing but continuing to promote their products like nothing is wrong.
Well their marketing and development departments are probably not closely connected. Also like any organisation they won't spend marketing budget promoting their software issues. Have you spoken to their support directly? Sometimes there are settings you can change in Windows that resolve the issue. There is also a helpful community on Zumoforums.com. I've not had many issues at all getting the software working so it doesn't seem to be across the board.
I contacted Garmin Support and we went through several diagnostics and we even tried a second computer, end result was they said to return the unit after an hour on the phone. It was a fast turn around but here's the deal, I purchased a brand new unit in December of last year, I sent it back for service (in the nice new original box and paid $14.00 shipping) and they sent me someone else's refurbished unit wrapped in bubbles in a plane brown box. I guess I should have bought refurbished unit in the first place and saved a hundred bucks.
So contact them, express your dissatisfaction and request a refund. They'll either refund you or send you a new one.

It must have come with a USA map. You'll need to acquire a Canadian map and load it onto the device. I'd suggest contacting Garmin to see if they'll give you one as a gesture of good will. Failing that you may need to purchase it.

Using Mac version. When it got to Step 2 of 4 Restart your DEVICE .. After Ejecting the Device from my Desktop; then unplugging as the On-Screen Instructions. I waited the 5 seconds ;; plugged it back in ( This Video, then shows the DEVICE being recognised round 4.06 on this video .. it then shows the DEVICE connected and a GREEN DOT showing CONNECTED ) Mine did not .. I left it .. The On-Screen Instructions say to press the on/off button on the DEVICE if it doesn't come on . Did this .. It then came on .. but still showed as NOT CONNECTED ... I left it for 15 mins .. I was just about to unplug when it showed on the GARMIN updating Maps. Then the GARMIN showed GREEN DOT Connected .. and showed on my Desktop. It did say it would take 1 hour 18 mins to update. I have a Fast connection and it took .. 18 mins in all to update everything. UK . Ireland and FULL Europe ( For now .. BREXIT ) ..
btw .. Charging the GARMIN .. If you use a Computer to charge your GARMIN via USB it will take sometime. You can't use any old USB charger .. It detects some third party Chargers and tell you it's not charging. I found a SAMSUNG USB Phone Charger Works. You can buy a GARMIN CHARGER 3 PIN and EUROPE Mains Charger for £20 .. or buy the EUROPE one with just the TWO PINS .. Costs £10 .. and use a 3 PIN Adaptor ( HALFORDS .. other stores are available ) Full Charge using Mains Adaptor takes around 4 / 5 hours first time around. 9 There is a Maintenance mode on the GARMIN .. shows charge rate etc .. With the UNIT turned on. Press and Hold your finger on the GARMIN BATTERY ICON .. then the Maintenance mode / charge rate should show. If your unsure .. Leave it alone.

Only wish Microsoft would work with an older device, the Nuvi 2797 runs great as a backup. I have Linux, yet, no drivers for Linux. Time to consider no garmin too

I have a NuviCam LM and it works very good as a dashCam and GPS.
BUT the Garmin Express Software is a load of Rubbish, since I have had the unit I am unable to update or upload anything from their site. So happily I am driving around with an outdated map and information.... So unless (now 2 years) they get their software sorted I am going to get a Tom Tom. For the price it is an expensive load of junk.....
That's unfortunate. Can you use a friends computer to install Garmin Express and get the updates? It's not ideal but at least you'd have the latest maps. I'm hoping Garmin will start to bring out devices with better wireless capabilities so that you can install the updates by connecting to a wireless network.
I have downloaded and installed the utility to update firmware and watched it do it. BUT Garmin Express wont even recognize My etrex legend and she is hooked up to the pc so pretty.

Well thank-you. Today I got a NUVI 2559 LM because my original NUVI 2595 (3 years old) had died on me. Yesterday I connected the new device to my Laptop (USB) and assumed it was powering up overnight. Nobody tells you how long this is supposed to take but it worked - now I've moved on and everything is working fine. I made my first trip - back to the tech store to buy a Micro SD. 'Cos Garmin Express had informed me there was not enough memory on the device - the new one I'd just bought - to perform updates. Hmm...

Sounds like the battery is shot. There is a battery indicator on the home screen but if it keeps shutting down all the time when it's not connected to power that'll be a battery issue.

How to use Garmin GPS
Our internet connection is super slow, so updating anything takes 30 hours plus... Plus my Mac is 10 years old and not quick anymore either. I wish I would have just stuck with my google maps on my phone, that one is accurate. I tried to type in a street address on the Garmin Drive 51 USA LM and the device couldn't find it! The street and business has been there for 55 years! Mind boggling.... It seems with Garmin you have to do everything yourself and with Google, speak and it routes!
That is unfortunate. Future devices should be wifi enabled so you can download updates directly to the device. If your internet is slow you could connect to a public service instead. Boston city Centre for example has free Wifi and so do most McDonalds in Europe.

The thing that tripped me up for awhile is how to get the Garmin device to reliably connect to the computer. What I've found for my DriveSmart 61 is (1) turn the Garmin off by pressing and holding the power button, (2) plug the USB cable into the computer, (3) plug the USB cable into the Garmin, (4) let the "USB connection detected" countdown screen run down on its own and watch for a change in the Garmin screen that indicates it's connected to the computer, and (5) watch/listen for a screen or tone that indicates a successful USB device connected to the computer. If you have the settings on Garmin Express set to "Automatically launch Garmin Express whan a Garmin device is connected," Express will then open; another good indication that the connection is made.

This video is 8 years old. The latest Garmin devices are WiFi enabled so can be updated directly and don't require a smart phone. Also ease up on the excessive punctuation.

Do you have a Lifetime Map Subscription with your device. You can usually tell if you have that if there is an LM at the end of the device name, e.g. Zumo 590LM. If you don't have Lifetime Maps you have to pay to install the latest map.

YEAH...I have a Garmin Nuvi 1490T, everything was working fine up until I got in the car and it said my Maps need updating...Now I am on Day 3 of just to even trying to get it back to the state it was in before the Update...It comes with LifeTime Updates, I Guess Garmin's Criteria for LifeTime is whatever they decide it should be, Give me Back what I paid For! This thing has worked well up until the Update...

Sometimes the server is busy. If you try again in an hour it will probably work. They may just be upgrading their servers.

The process is the same for most Garmin devices including their action cameras. Although for a camera there aren't any map updates only software updates.
To think I was considering purchasing a Zumo for my motorcycle for these worthless Garmins. Garmin has gone down the tubes. Garmin is something I avoid entirely now.

If you own an older Garmin product this isn't going to work. Save yourself the aggravation and just don't attempt it.
For older Garmin Devices you can usually install updates through *Garmin.com** --> My Garmin.*

I have a Quest 2 that I had to install a new battery in order to connect to computer. Went through all the steps to get to a download. Download hung up at 2 minutes for over an hour. No way to abort without closing program.
After I gave up was stuck with error message that required me to reopen the unit to disconnect the battery to allow the unit to reset.
Don't. Syncing with Express wrecked my forerunner 220. Buy a device that van run garmin connect, IMO Express is at best a forgotten piece of software which doesn't work and at worst will actively destroy your devices.
Contact Garmin and get it replaced under warranty. You need Garmin express to update some of the older devices and also to install some of the bigger updates on older devices.
LOL! If you have windows 10, just stay away from Garmin. They have problems with the updates and haven't figured it out. Some are getting it done, and many are not. If you wanna play the odds that you are that tech savvy - knock yourself out! The easy updates from yesteryear are over if you have windows 10. I have the nuvi 2689. 2nd one! so many problems. Google updates with windows 10 and garmin express. read it for yourself.

In the first instance try using a different USB port on the laptop, if that doesn't work try a different USB cable. If that doesn't work try it on a different computer.
