Haven't used my Garmin in about 5 years and I received an email from Garmin saying they will close out my account due to inactivity unless I login which I did (after updating my password of coarse). Hello! Thank you very much for your video! It's very clear and concise. But I hope you can help me. I have an old Nuvi 50 and I am trying to update my maps. I dont have the original cable, but I have a cable here (same but not from Garmin), and my computer does not recognize my device at all. I've already used two cables but still nothing. Can you please help me?

I have a Garmin Nuvi 300, when I try to install the updates, a pop up message reads" we're not going to be able to fit it all on your device's internal memory". Is my Garmin too old or can I put the updates on a bigger SD card?
Try a new SD card in a size that Garmin allows.

I’ve used 2 computers now and neither can find the drive for the update. I have lifetime updates, it’s registered with Garmin and is a Garmin Drive 60LMT
Barbara, you may want to try a different USB cable if Windows cannot see the GPS.

Hi. I found your video very informative. I bought the Garmin Drive 52 and did the map update with Garmin Expres and noticed that the memory remaining on the unit is down to 1.32MB left (99% Full). I have a 32GB microSD card in the unit (0% Full) and would like to offload the content from the main unit to the SD card but I can't for the life of me figure that out. Can you do a post on this? I've been looking at Garmin Express software to do this, but I cannot find the screen with the option of storing it in SD card. Thank you.
Jedi, I do believe that the SD card will only be used when internal memory will no longer hold the update you’re trying to install. Here’s an article that explains that. Hope this helps. If it doesn’t resolve your issue, please use this phone number for Garmin support. I have also included.

I have the Dezl 770 LM. It won't update for some reason. Keeps crashing.

I have updated my Nuvi 50 using GARMIN Express. This time I found it did not have the new exit numbers and the new exit that was switched to the left. This doesn’t make me feel confident. In other words these updates are unreliable. Is there a way to update the gps from Google maps? They get updated instantly with the new exit numbers e.t.c.

Pumpky, I doubt they would let you update a Garmin with anything that is a competing product. That would be great if they would allow that. It’s not a perfect science but I’ve also found a few errors in Apple and Google maps as well. I still like the Garmin way better than using a phone. Thanks for coming to our channel.

Software keeps crashing on an older computer. Could it be computer is too old?
Usually, the people who make the software have what they call a minimum system requirement for your computer. If it doesn’t meet that spec, it looks like you get another upgrade.

HI Im trying to up date the Garmin of my husband on a iMac 2021 It says can't find device is there a reason why I can't update the maps.
Line, make sure that the USB cable is inserted all the way on the Garmin and also the computer. Then make sure the Garmin is turned on and after all that just fire up the Garmin express app. I would do a reboot on the PC to give it a fresh start and get all that prepared before opening the Garmin express again. Hope that helps.

I have only a Samsung Tablet and a Garmin sat nav and over the years I have lost the original cable that came in the box but being a tablet the cable would not fit as it's a micro connection (small ) at each end , is it possible to download the updates on my table to the Garmin ? but What cable do I need as I have several but nothing fits and being as old as I am I cannot figure this out if it would work having the correct cable and just my tablet..
Scott, you need a computer to perform the update on older units, I suggest finding a friend with a computer and following the video step-by-step. You can order the cable on Amazon. Here is a link. amzn.to/2VnEats

Jak, I explain how to perform a “Backup” of your Garmin in the Video. The Backup gets saved to your computer, not the SD card.

I'd like to ask whether anyone has not updated any of the Garmin devices and then found that functionality has been reduced. Updating my own device I've found that options which were on the device when I originally purchased it are no longer shown on the device. Has anyone else had the same issue. ? Whether in the UK or in the US.
John, you should call Garmin and find out if the feature you lost is obsolete or moved to a different screen. Here is the Tech support phone number.

Correct! It gets connected with a USB cable. The newer ones use wifi.
Not all USB cables are data capable... Some are simply charging cables.

It happened to me! I had to go to the garmin store to buy an original charger because the usb cable we had wasn’t garmin. It charged just fine but my laptop wouldn’t recognize the device.

Marian, if yours doesn’t have the LM or LMT after the model number you are better off purchasing a new GPS. Look in the info section and I have a link to an affordable unit.

Problem for me it's stuck on preparing device for software update for ages
Sam, it could be due to the fact that your Internet is slow or your computer might be a little older and slow so I would give it at least two hours before giving up on it. Then reboot your computer and don’t open up anything else except for the software and try it again. If you get the same result, I highly recommend trying it on a different computer that might be a little bit newer. Also make sure you’ve got the newest version of the software from Garmin.

We know how to update it, the problem was when we had to download the app onto the pc first it wouldn't recognise the sat nav

Waze maps are installed on a Smartphone not a GPS.
Does it matter if you use laptop. Mine ie taking 3 hrs
A Laptop won’t matter. If it doesn’t complete, reboot and try again with the newest software.

That might slow it down. Just let it keep running overnight or take to a Pc with high speed Internet.
my garmin nuvi 40 was bought for me in 2012. I have updated the software for free today thanks to your video but i cant update the maps for free. It asks me to pay! Any suggestions? I live in Scotland
Fibby, if that GPS came with US updates than there will be a charge for other countries. In my opinion you are better off buying a new Garmin in Scotland that comes with free updates for the country. I hope this helps you. Here is a link from the Garmin website explaining that.

So i did every step by step of instructions, but then a new box popped up "Use a memory card" (RECCOMENDED) ??? So i uninstalled the download through the control panel, and tried it again. It see's my Garmin Nuvi 50LM checked for updates, clicked install, and the same thing about the memory card pops up....Funny thing is my laptop see's the memory card, giving it a "H" as the drive, i did a quick format, but seems Garmin can't find it!!
James, I would try a different memory card. If that doesn’t work, look on the bright side…it looks like a new Garmin GPS is in your future.

What i finally did was first connect my Garmin, then i went back to download, and it seems it went straight to Garmin, taking around 4 minutes to install. I'll take it out for a spin tomorrow to see if i notice any difference. thanks again my friend!

Walt, I think the LMT stands for free lifetime maps and traffic. Just try and update it. Give Tech Support a call at 1-800-800-1020 if it doesn’t work.

It sounds like your GPS does not give free updates. Try calling Garmin support to see if your model has fee updates. 1 (800) 800-1020

Sorry to hear that, sometimes that can happen if you’re traveling outside of the United States, and it needs more room for maps.
