My 10 year old Nuvi 50LM still works great. When I got it new, there were 2 options - one version with lifetime free maps, and a less expensive one where you have to pay a fee each year to update maps. I got a lifetime version (for like $20 more) and have never had trouble getting map updates.
yeah it's 100% worth the extra bux...does your have trouble finding position indoors and when it's stormy outside?..mine has started doing that recently but i'm blaming the satellites so far

I want to say thank you very much. I went to multiple videos and was unsuccessful on updating my Garmin Nuvi 1300. And it is approximately 17 years old. We have never updated it and with your help the update was finally successful, but mine only went to a 6.30 as of 11-21- 2024 But will definitely now try to keep up-to-date on updates. Thank you again very much. I really appreciate it. Take care and God bless.
Nice information, thank you. I've got a 42LM I've had since 2012. I have used it a few times over the years. Never updated the map though. Glad to see I still can update it and will get that done. I've got to go to Walmart to get a microchip for it. Got a road trip coming up for Thanksgiving.
Great video. Just updated my 40LM and 3590LM. Hint: If buying a used Garmin, look for the "LM" in the model number for free Lifetime Maps. For some reason, I had to try a few different cords and different USB ports on my computer before the Garmin express software would recognize the 3590LM device.
They are very particular with the cables you use too. Obviously the factory supplied one is the best but if yo no longer have it try a few different cables
The Garmin GPS units are very particular with the cables you use. Obviously the factory supplied one is the best but if yo no longer have it try a few different cables. Eventually one will work.
If you're wondering if your older Garmin unit qualifies for free map updates, just check the model number on your unit. For instance, if you have a Garmin Nuvi 50... "50" is the base model with no free map upgrades available. If your model number is followed by "LM" (50LM), then you have Lifetime Maps free upgrades. If followed by "LMT" (50LMT), then you have free upgrades for Lifetime Maps and upgrades for Traffic (T) conditions
Not only do they still work but Garmin (in Australia) keeps updating the software and the maps for free, while older iPhones are effectively obsolete as Apple refusing to update the software for older model. Dedicated GPS units are much better than using your phone as they have much stronger GPS chips.
I have one of these , Nuvi 50LM . The express software program will not detect the device. Tried different cables, different USB ports and different computers. Support was not helpful, they only wanted to sell me a new device.
FYI, I had the same problem with a Nuvi 50LM and finally got it to show up in garmin express by deleting all GPX files in an "Archive" folder in the "GPX" directory on the device. It had a corrupted track log file and was preventing Garmin Express from recognizing it. Using Basecamp or otherwise, see if you can find if there are any errors caused by importing corrupted files and that might give you a clue of what you need to delete or modify to get it to work.
I updated my old Garmin Nuvi 50LM. The SD card is installed in my Garmin. I checked if Garmin sees changes in traffic in my neighborhood. In one place, one-way traffic became two-way. NO, the map shows old traffic. How do I know if this SD card is readable? Maybe SD card needs to be formatted? Is there anything else that needs to be done? Should I make any changes to the settings? Thanks.
I have a NUVI 885T and apparently there aren't any map updates available anymore. Seems Garmin doesn't support it anymore. What are my options, other than using it as is and hope for the best, or purchasing a new device? Is there any other place to download the latest maps for this device?
With these devices i didnt see any paid option for updating maps, just download whati had there...as per if you want the latest like in google maps, i dont think these can handle that much detail anyway.
Any idea why mine is changing launguage everytime i shut it off? It goes from czech language back to german language. Is there any way how to save it permanetly?
Try this: Connect the navi to your computer, there must be a file which is Called: Language (or "Sprache" in german). Try to delete the language that you don't need. Hope it works!
Garmin likes to make GPS units not detectable by Garmin Express, They claim that if you don't update the maps every two years you will be locked out of updates, but many folks are saying that their supported device won't work with the garmin express software, which eventually leads to being locked out of updated map support, seems like forced obsolescence in an illegal fashion. Garmin's a dirty company that wants you to throw away your GPS units and go buy another.
