    I'm doing a 6 weeks tour in Italy in 2024 and want to create my travel plan in Google. This is perfect and has shown me things I did not know about Google maps right from the start of the video.
    I just been through the tutorial switching back and forth, setting up a route myself and every step is exactly as described.

    Edit: I just converted a route I had previously made on Google Maps -- exactly as you instructed to do -- and imported it into my old Garmin 590.

    That's a pretty good tutorial. Most of people think with Google maps on your phone, External GPS are dead. That's not exactly what I think, I love navigation with my Garmin GPS and stick to it. Google maps is great but if you don't have network, the software won't work. I didn't know this method of route planning. Thanks for sharing this.

      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @awesomedn
      @awesomedn ปีที่แล้ว +1

      >> if you don't have network, the software won't work
      Google Maps Mobile (aka GMM) routing works perfectly if you downloaded the offline maps in advance. Moreover, you may have another navigation app installed that works offline all the time and use it as a backup.
      I'm still using my Garmin when traveling on motorcycle, but I can't emphasize enough how much I hate to create the route via small crappy resistive touch screen of my Zumo 396 LMT-S. It sucks badly.
      Also, there is a way to import the whole route as you see it in GM (minus adjustments made by dragging the route) by converting the GM route into GPX and importing it via Garmin Smart Link phone app. It works, but it saves all the waypoints from GM route into my favorites - which I genuinely hate and have to remove dozens entries by hand.
      I wish Garmin came up with online tool that can be used to create, adjust and sync the routes to the Zumo device (which can connect to WiFi to pull the updates, btw).

    Excellent thank you so much. I have the Garmin Smart Drive which is just sitting in the box as to be honest I use Google Maps in UK 99% of the time. I don't even bother with the built in Mercedes Sat Nav or Honda as they are OK.
    With this new innovation, I think I will plan precisely my trip to lock in the best points of interest. I found some excellent bargain markets, something for the kids etc.
    By using Google maps and copied my planned trip, it will be excellent.
    I think I might name the trips
    Monday
    Tuesday
    Wednesday
    etc and then we know what we "plan" to do on each of the days.
    I salute Sir for discovering this amazing hidden feature on Google maps.
    I am just glad I bought a Garmin and NOT a Tom Tom!

    Very good tutorial. I was hoping for a way to actually import a Google map itself for a complex route that has been modified to avoid congested areas. So it looks like I'm going to have to import the GPX file and then make the changes again on the Garmin. (Edit to add: I have watched BaseCamp tutes and it's too complex for me.)
    Anyway, thank you. Your teaching style is excellent.

    You are doing it the hard way. You can plan the same trip in regular Google Maps -- just the one step -- and use your phone for navigation. Doing it in Google Maps will also provide information for each destination (and any other poi by just tapping on one). Moreover, you can edit the trip on the fly.

    Great info as usual BUT......
    Sharing routes via GPX files is fought with danger. Google maps is all about destinations. If you share routes with various destinations with other travellers each traveller can be sent by a totally different route depending in their version of garmin maps and/or the settings of their gps units. Eg garmin zumo 590. Rourlte plan may be totally different due to the route setting being Curcy roads yet the destinations/ way points are the same. It is a total pain when I share gpx files with friends on bike rides and think their turn by turn directions will be the same as mine.

    When I tried this on my new Garmin DriveSmart 66, the start and destination locations came up in Favourites but there was no route map between them. I've looked at countless TH-cam videos but the interface between Google Maps And Garmin mapping is made as difficult as possible. The most successful routing I have done is within the Garmin device itself.

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101
      @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101  ปีที่แล้ว

      If you use all the steps that I show on my video you can rout to each destination as shown on my video. Even if a place is chosen as destination you can have the Garmin GPS generate the rout for it, as long as the GPS has the maps for that region.

    • @TECHNOLOGYTIPS101

      You need to go to your GPS settings and enable the Trip Log function, then Base Camp will see all your previous tracks since the trip log was activated.

    I have many saved places that I want to keep on my Drivesmart 50 LMT, it gets very confusing trying to remove the new locations that where generated by the GPX file from my saved places. How do I remove the GPX file from my gps? I have deleted the GPX file in my GPS using file explorer on my PC, but the GPS still keeps the new locations in my GPS. Then I have to manually delete the new saved places from my GPS. It would be nice if there was a way to drop the GPX file into the recently found folder on my GPS.

    I do not want apps running on my Samsung Galaxy phone when I am not using them.
    I own a OTR800.
    I know how to kill apps both with my Appkiller app and manually on Android. It is bad enough some Google apps can not be killed, but Garmin goes too far.
    My phone has all its updates but these apps have done the same behavior for on Android 9,10,11,12.
    You can not disable the apps either. A users only choice is to uninstall both the Drive app and Dezl app. Else they consume power and some data.
    These apps could be made to detect a Bluetooth connection a GPS device and be dormant the rest, which is most, of the time I am not driving and in motion.
    So Garmin should reimburse everyone for the background data these apps consume without the users permission of knowledge.
    For nowhere in the user agreement does it indicate these apps run 24/7 and can not be shut off.
    I think they are secretly collecting personal data.
    The apps really do not help me navigate. They are supposed to warn me of real time traffic and speed traps. This is yet to happen once, in the six months I have owned the OTR800.
    I do not recommend installing Drive app and Dezl app on any phone, until such a time as users have full control over the apps.

      The answer is a lot more complicated than you think. Just in short if you are traveling to lets say Spain, how do you know the business hours of a restaurant that you want to go to, and how do you even know if they are still in business. So it is a good idea to integrate Google with your Garmin GPS to get more real time and up to date navigation.
