You've got to be nuts if you think this screw is a stand up guy. Sitting on there pretending to help prisoners every day, never took in drugs, never knew of other screws he worked with taking in drugs, his pal grabbing the screw that punched an inmate telling him never to do that again🤨 Alot of pish these c*nts aww stick together and still will even when retired. It's not just the inmates that have an us and them attitude these screws are the worst offenders and no doubt worst criminals than alot of the guys in there doin a sentence. Dont believe his pish

I'm reading this book at the moment, in it he talks about when he was working for a time in a women's place, And he was talking about anti-psychotics and how a lot of them were on them and they put weight on you, so like he said it was a double whammy, I've been on these tablets 150mg for about 5 yrs, and couldn't understand why I was putting weight on, I instantly googled them, and found he was right, I was dead shocked cos doctors never told me about weight gain, Anyway I am now in the process of withdrawal, and yes I know it's not very sensible, but fuck that for a game of soldiers, so thanks Neil Samworth, I never knew

‘Screw’ is not actually about locks.
In the old days prisoners were expected to do non-productive labour. Just for the discipline or exercise or punishment. One of these involved turning a big handle. That’s it, just turning a handle for hours. If this looked too easy for the prisoner a large bolt could be turned to increase the pressure and make the job harder, the bolt could also be be turned (or screwed) out of spite by nasty officers. So they became ‘Screws’.
Other work involved a revolving ladder attached to a wall with cubicles built along the wall so prisoners could not look at each other or talk while they just climbed this revolving ladder for hours without actually getting anywhere.
Another was picking up cannon balls walking ten paces and putting them down and then going back for another. Stronger prisoners would throw them and the sport Shot Put was invented.
    Bored yet?
Well if not, Hang men used to make a few extra Bob by selling of the rope that killed a prisoner. The rope of some prisoners was worth more than others. So on high profile hangings the Hangman would cut the rope into six inch bits. This spawned the term “Money For Old Rope”
I used to work in Bedford nick (not as an officer, In Education) and they have a museum there. Fascinating. Should be moved into the town so everyone can see it.

Speaking of the incident with the polish prisoner and its negative effects; its amazing how a person can think ahead to a general circumstance like that and think they could handle it with no problem. Then, an actual event happens and along with it deep and lasting effects to one's psychological health. Its sad we can not exhibit more empathy to people who otherwise were fine previously. No one 'plans' to be effected- involuntary reactions to any level of trauma need support, not ridicule.

No piercing's no rings on fingers absolutely nothing extra that somebody can use against me. Ive seen people with enough hair to grab hold of being swung into a wall with it. Ive seen earings noserings nipple ring bellendrings all torn out. Ive seen 2 people lose a finger due to their wedding ring. Legalise drugs. Would half the prison population. It's not like it's hard to get drugs now if you're smart... The rest would then be more violent individuals. Which would then narrow down the issues.

Hey Shaun great podcast as always, I was wondering if you know anyone who knows anything about Australian prisons? We never hear anything about what’s going on inside from the media, but recently we have heard a tiny bit due to fat tony (a underworld figure down here) being stabbed and Carl Williams being stabbed to death in the same prison, Carls death happened years ago but stuff is coming back up again due to tony. I would love to hear your opinions on this! Thanks for all your great work, love from Australia

Great and frank podcast Shaun. I've read Mr Samworths book and it was an excellent read. Very poignant, sad yet quite funny at times moments. Him and his family had there moments too, it's a tough life. As a kid from Manchester we use to go past this Victorian prison walls and shout oggy oggy oggy to the inmates and they'd shout back oi oi oi knowing we were kids. It was quite funny but then we didn't have the foggiest idea about what they were in there for. Maybe nicking 20 quid.. my my we were sooo nieve lol.
