Vanessa was the Governor of Security and Operations for HMP Wormwood Scrubs. Having worked for 16 years in a high-security women’s prison dealing with the likes of Rosemary West and Myra Hindley, Vanessa thought she’d seen it all. That was until she was transferred to the notorious Wormwood Scrubs.
Thrust into a ‘man’s world’, her no-nonsense approach and fearless attitude saw her swiftly rise through the ranks. From dealing with celebrity criminals and busting drug rings, to recruiting informers and being subject to violent attacks, this hard-hitting but often humorous podcast reveals all about life behind bars in unflinching detail.

I was a registered specialist nurse in substance misuse. I also had experience in orthopedics and surgical discipline. I worked as a nurse in Prison and can say I learn a massive amount about human nature. It wasn't horrible as you would imagine as many prisoners have the most beautiful hearts who have terrible pasts of cruelty done to them .

She's the model person to have running our prisons.
To go off on a tangent I suppose she's a "right wing" of the Scandinavian ethos. Which in MY mind is clearly the best ethos. That these people WILL become our neighbours and we're not better than them if we spend our whole time poking, bullying and degrading people who already have given up on society and come from HORRIBLE backgrounds and circumstances. Or simply made mistakes that's put them in circumstances that are extremely difficult to get out of and moulded then the wrong way.
I hope the BBC or a big media company have her walk around a Scandinavian prison and pick her brains about how she views them.

I've just come across this podcast and wow am i impressed by this woman. She shows real empathy for the prisoners that deserved it, a firm hand where needed and respect for there personal space. No wonder she became a Governor with all her traits of decency and eagle eye and self awareness. I'm going to buy this book to gain a fuller insight into the life behind walls. I know the smeel she's talking about, i work in an advanced dementia home and most are doubly incontinent, you never get used to the stench, also we are attacked regularly and cant defend ourselves becase that would be abuse ....

What a fantastic interview you did with Vanessa! I have just bought the audio book and am going to enjoy every word, perfectly narrated by pretty amazing Vanessa herself. She's a natural storyteller, and she is proper old school. You want this country to work properly again? You need people like Vanessa.
I lived very close to the Scrubs for over a decade and am a born and raised West Londoner, I visited a friend in there once, before Vanessa was working there, just.
Thanks for such a great interview, in a really beautiful, original building, I bet it's a gorgeous house and a beautiful place to live, much needed after some of the things Vanessa has dealt with. I was in the pub game, had to retire, I know that feeling of missing getting up in the morning to face whatever to day brings.

I'd sure like to hear more of that particular experience. Did she live or die ? What became of her ? Why was she there ? What kind of life did she have before ? Hopefully we'll hear more about this poor female prisoner.

Such a brilliant podcast… this woman is incredible and so inspiring.
I what a fabulous way to end a career by starting a new one as an author.
I am shocked that David Cameron felt it necessary to try and reduce funds for prisons. What an idiot he was and so removed from public opinion as many of us are only too happy to pay to keep these criminals behind bars away from our families and society in general.

Read Vanessa’s book recently and was a fantastic read! What a service to HMP
Prisons - well done and the MBE was well received. I think the service needs more governors who are firm and fair as you seem to have been 👏🏻 x

Fascinating interview. I work with mental health patients, often criminals. You are getting used to stay calm in most stressful situations. But - when I had patient with knife in his left hand - and jug of boiling water in the other, having stand out with police while I had to secure the ward and other patients - I could hear my heart in my ears pumping…

Hi Shaun this was amazing to listen to. Thank you to Vanessa for your accounts. She looks & reminds me so much of a teacher I used to have. Just to add my partner used to drive a minibus to collect the Newbold Revel prison college trainees to take them on their nights out a few years ago. Also he ran a fish & chip shop which was down the road from the college around 1986 & the trainees from that place used to get chips from him👍Weekend at Bernie's springs to mind when she said put the guy in the cupboard
