  • It’s not where you go. It’s what you leave behind . . . Chef, writer, adventurer, provocateur: Anthony Bourdain lived his life unabashedly. Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain is an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at how an anonymous chef became a world-renowned cultural icon. From Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?), this unflinching look at Bourdain reverberates with his presence, in his own voice and in the way he indelibly impacted the world around him.

I’m 51 . Blue collar. Mr Bourdain changed the way I thought about myself. I looked at him and said if this guy , a cook, an addict, a man that admittedly had huge faults as a person similar to mine can go to these wonderful places and meet and enjoy time spent with people from these places so can I. I guess he inspired me to do things in a way no one else ever did. And when I learned he cashed in his chips I’m not ashamed to say I teared up a bit as if I lost a close friend. And it’s amazing that he had this effect on so many people around the world.

I cried while a punk band played. I jumped up on stage when they were done and screamed about it. I think maybe two people understood me. I made the crowd pour beer on the ground. It felt.....nice. I was standing in the Barcelona airport following my second trip to Europe when I heard of his death. It hit me hard. How could someone who had the life of traveling and seeing the world be mentally in a place that they felt the only solution was to take their own life? I watched this documentary last week on my way home from my 6th trip out of the country. I laughed and I cried. We all can learn so much from this man.

I was too young when he started No Reservations. Now I'm watching everything for the first time. Chang is absolutely right: he went from an intolerable prick in the first season of NR, to someone with whom I wanted to have a beer (or 20) and talk about life in the last season of PU. It was always about him bettering himself. Unfortunately, he was too broken, and maybe too proud to seek help. Seek help.

@@Coltonn56 he didn’t, he said it was about Tony’s journey through self-improvement. I’m calling him a prick. In the first season he was arrogant, belligerent, pretentious. He started to change on his first visit to Lebanon. That’s where he truly found his voice and style.

Remember he was a traveler and not a tourist. By observing how his level of politically intimate inquiry grew with each passing episode and series, I see how his sensitivity and empathy for his international family made him even more depressed and helpless. He seemed to carry such needless shame over his imperfect life. I can only guess. Like so many of you, I find tears flow over the state of the world he witnessed and showed us through his eyes. I for one plan to keep getting up off of the couch and moving out of my comfort zone!
    Thankyou Tony

ANTHONY will never know how many lives he has touched. Watching him travel the world outside his comfort zone was what got me interested in travelling the world. I have since travelled lots of exotic places because of Tonys wonderful series. Something so cool , raw and sad about the guy that I identified with on a different level. I think Tony unfortunately made a rash decision out of sadness and a broken heart. I'm sure if he decided to just go to bed that night he would have woke up in the morning to see the sun rise again he might have thought what the he'll was I thinking?. Anyways just wanted to thank you Tony for your coolness and guidance . RiP
