How To Change Oil 2012-2018 Toyota Rav4 | Easy DIY Oil Change
In this video I change the oil in a 2017 Toyota Rav4 with the 2.5L engine. This applies to any Toyota Rav4 from the 2012-2018 model years. The car takes 5qts of 0W-20 and a paper filter. I also show how to reset the “scheduled maintenance” indicator on the dash when complete.

YES. BUT INNACURATE. THE PLUG REQUIRES A GASKET. HE'S DUMB.😊
I have an 011 venza.
Exact same filter.
I can do an oil change in 15 minutes.
Dont even need the filter tool.
Just use a 3/8 extension, and out it comes.
Buy the filter at any auto supply store.
Once you do it, its real easy.
Save a lot of $.
Dealers charge a small fortune these days.
I use 5/20 oil though.
A higher mileage car.

Just completed the oil change in less than 1/2 hr following your recommendations. Perfect . What impressed me on the oil fiter housing is the ratchet typ mechanism that prevents the Filter housing from unscrewing . Good Job MattDIY

Does the new paper filter have a indicator of which end goes up or down in the cartridge holder?
It does not.
How often would you need to worry about changing the smaller O ring?
Not very often, I would only replace if it was damaged or leaking.
Really good job Matt, I wish You would do a review on a oil change for a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica. One moron actually poured clean oils(synthetic, which is expensive anyway. What a waste) through his system to get out all of the old oil.

Personally I do every 5,000 miles but that is up for debate. I would say 5k is a good number to follow though.
Great video on the Oil change for the 2017 RAV4. However you didn’t show the obvious but simple part of putting the drain plug back in. Do you need a washer for this drain plug? I had changed the oil on a 2016 RAV4 and it previously had the steel washer. So I’m wondering if you had indeed installed with a steel washer or not. You had no video of that procedure .
I did show that, if you have a washer you can reuse the same one.

You are welcome! I have no idea. I think it’s lack of understanding. The gasket is there for the very purpose that it doesn’t need to go on super tight, but the regular oil mechanic probably thinks you tighten everything lol

Wouldnt it be a good idea to pour some new oil in the filter housing before you put it back on? I’ve always done this with conventional filters to make sure there is no pause in oil flow when the engine cranks.
You can but not a big deal, it will be a very short period that the filter is dry.
Thanks for the video, I have a 2914 rav4 and heard it takes 4.6 quarts bit i always have to put the whole 5 quarts in ti get it to the top notch on the dipstick ?
As long as it is between the notches you are good it can be all the way to the top if you want to use the full 5.

RhnKs sir. Recently I bought 17 rav4. The drain plug seemed over torqued and I had to use crush washer. I thought someone forgot to put one 😂

Can I do the oil change on driveway that has slight incline or has to be flat surface?
Incline is fine just check the level on flat ground.
I have never been able to get that drain plug off the oil filter. I have tried but when I try to ratchet it off, the filter assembly itself loosens up.
Yeah and that’s okay you really don’t need too just helps make it less messy.
Why would you lubricate a brand new O-ring with old, dirty oil?
Helps it make a better seal, you don’t want a dry O-ring on metal.

Hi, have you ever had, a situation when you put the oil filter wrench on the oil filter too hard and can't remove that? I have this situation now and I don't know how to remove it after replacing the oil filter.
Yes! It’s common, grab a socket wrench or small hammer and tap all around the wrench until it falls off or gives loose!

@@Wiratius6 If the filter wrench becomes stuck while reinstalling the filter cannister on the engine, flip the lever on the ratchet handle in the direction to loosen the filter cannister, give a slight pull on the ratchet handle and the filter wrench should easily come off the cannister.
How to add oil direction in toyota rav2012 ?
Do I have to pour all the oil or I have to keep checking the dip stick?
Put the required amount in then check the dip stick.

Did mine a week ago, easy job got the car 2 weeks ago and the oil filter cap was so damn tight it actually broke 1 of those little tabs they have 😮💨
Had to go and get a new oil filter cap (the metal one) to finish the job
same dude, i dont know why it was so tight had to use a breaker bar to get it off
So stupid there is absolutely no reason for people to make them so tight. Glad you got it done!!

I have a question I have the same Rav 135k mile burning oil I have fo as 1 quart every 1000 miles. Switch to 5-30 oil it’s little better. I thinking about changing the pCV valve does that help. Please advise much love from chicago.
Possible that could help it’s worth a try! I think that is fairly common on higher mileage ones.

No freaking way I'm doing all of that every time I have to change my oil. My 2018 Honda CRV has a traditional oil filter that's as easy to change as any regular oil filter. No special tools needed, no assembly required. I just spin off the old one with my bare hand, spin the new one on with that same bare hand. Why on earth would a manufacturer like Toyota go to this convoluted crap?
Not sure but it’s really not a bad job and less waste. Just take the cap off and replace the filter I don’t think it’s that much more difficult.
