    This is by far, the best oil change instruction for this series Rav4 on TH-cam! My 2014 is a daily driver and I commute about 500 miles per week, so I do a lot of oil changes on it, I come back and watch this video prior to heading out to the garage every time! It serves as great instruction and reminds me of the order of operations and the torque values. Many thanks for sharing this one Mike!

    there is absolutely no reason why this has to be this complicated. Car manufacturers have made this so difficult to force people to send the car to the dealership. Great video though, very comprehensive.

      @BaghaShams 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I believe most cars just use a whole filter cartridge that contains all these parts. Toyota made it so that you only replace the filter itself and some O rings. Perhaps it's to reduce waste. But it really complicates it.

      I bought a 2018 Rav 4 from the stealership three months ago. A few days ago I changed the oil. They say every 10,000 miles. Forget that. I do 5,000. It's not like it's their problem once it leaves the lot. Anyway, when I got the cartridge off and the filter, the bottom o-ring was missing. And these guys are supposed to be the experts? I skipped the free oil change due to Covid 19, but I won't be going back, regardless.

    Excellent video. I just finished my first oil & filter change on my '014 RAV4. This was by far the best how-to video I found. Unlike the demise of points & condensers and carburetors, I'm not a fan of that of the old canister-type filter. But the extra hassle with the cartridge & housing design is not a huge deal. Anyway, the other videos are probably okay but the guys mumble and use ambiguous phrases like "this thing." This one is a keeper. Thank you very much.

    Great video. I've watch about 15 video's and this was the only video showing Torque specification. I purchased the Haynes manual and I was confused on oil torques, clearly a misprint, oil filter plug 110 ft pounds. You state 9, I'm guessing the book should have stated 10, not 110. So I am very thankful for your video.

    A lot of oil change shops never take the filter plug, they just take the whole filter which saves time, a little messy though, I've been doing the same for 4 years and no problem, although this is a great video if you want to follow the exact Toyota specs for That I say A+

    A couple of other tips are it's always better to do a hot oil change to get out most of that residual oil and if you're really meticulous about the internal parts of your motor, it would never hurt to run a litre of cheap oil through again to flush out the residual oil in the pan especially if you're propping your car up on an angle, like he did. And to be even more meticulous some people have been known to use magnetic drain plugs to catch the metal parts throughout your oil. And this also extends the life of your oil filter dramatically and also helps in the first few engine flushes of a brand new motor.

    Just wanted you to know that this was a great video. First time doing an oil change on a 2017 rav 4 and your video showed everything to expect . My oil change went exactly like your video said including draining the entire oil jug . Even though it's my first time on a RAV4 it's still went easier than both of my Ford trucks 03 and 13, that like to piss oil everywhere on a oil change. I have a 2010 Corolla so the paper cartridge is not new to me . Thanks

    Great video. Yes, you should wait 10-20 minutes for the oil to make its way down to the pan and get a good deep stick reading. This goes back decades, still applies today. even though the oil being used has the viscosity of water, the engine tolerances are much tighter.
    And as others have mentioned, do open your garage when you turn the engine on.

    Snap On 3/8 inch torque wrench ... how did you set to 9ft/lbs? Believe minimum on it is 10ft/lbs. However, excellent flex head on the torque wrench as now hard to come by without spending more than $100

      Why wouldn't it be? The engine temperature is controlled by the thermostat and the engine should be running at the same temperature (or close to it) year round.

    Thanks for your video. I get that Toyota is saving on the disposable steel can but the old style was so much easier. Sometimes I take it in for as oil change and sometimes I DIY. I have the filter wrench and all but this time the filter was put on (at a dealer) with a death grip and I'm afraid I'll break the cap. Is it any easier to remove when cold or hot? Or any other advice? Thanks!

    • @Mike_Barker
      @Mike_Barker  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the engine should be warned up before you change the oil so the filter housing will likely already be warm. Invest in the proper filter housing wrench to make your life a lot easier. 👍

    • @wayne9807
      @wayne9807 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Mike_Barker Thanks for the reply, but it was already warm and I have a great wrench. I've since found other youtube sites that had to use an impact wrench (scary thing to try) to loosen an way over-tight filter. My last change was by a Toyota dealer I don't know if they over-tightened it or if it was already too tight and they changed the oil and blew off the filter change. Either way IT STINKS!! Thanks ag for the reply.

    When you are putting the oil filter back on around 11min mark, I see a little metal tab that looks to keep the filter housing from unscrewing. Do you have to bend that out or can it be damaged when taking off the filter housing?

    I see that some manufacturers have a spin on oil filter for the RAV 4. Would you recommend it or do you like the factory housing?

    • @Mike_Barker
      @Mike_Barker  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honestly... I'm so use the the cartridge setup now that it doesn't really bother me. It is a lot less mess than the old spin on type.
      A spin on filter mounted on the top of the engine would be the most convenient (ie. Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ).

      Stick with what Toyota recommends for weight. You could always opt for one of those high mileage designed oils from any of the leading manufacturers though, while still keeping the same oil viscosity.

    Mike. Some premium oil cartridge oil filters have a steel sleeve inside them. Plus there is a steel sleeve inside the toyota oil filter housing. Will using a premium oil filter cartridge restrict oil flow due to having 2 steel sleeves in a filtering assembly? (OEM Toyota filters don't have a sleeve inside the filter)

    Do yourself a favor and replace that plastic filter housing with an aluminum one ( Napa keeps them in stock). I was changing my wife's oil and the damn thing broke leaving a hole in the side of it. This is a fairly common issue.

    • @njsongwriter
      @njsongwriter 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I was going to do that myself. Then I read about how some folks have had problems with the aluminum filter caps as well. I decided to get the original plastic oil filter cap.
      Either one is fine. It's only a problem if you let someone else change your oil and/or if you don't torque the parts to the specified torque. Also some folks use the wrong wrench. They use one that is meant for the smaller oil filter cap on a Corolla which will fit the top but is not the correct tool. Also use a socket that fits the hex head on the oil filter cap wrench instead of just using a ⅜ inch extension to remove the housing.
