A masterpiece. If i had such a fly it would never get a swim i would be afraid to catch a salmon on it in case it would get damaged. No it would be put into a safe only to be show to a few close friends maybe. Michael Angelo would be proud. Well done.

Another lovely fly Davie. I watch, enjoy, copy and fish most of the patterns you demonstrate. My absolute favorites are your built wing salmon flies.
    Thanks again.

Thanks again, Davie! A brilliant idea to tie Dee-style fly (or very similar) with a coloured wing. I will try it in different colour schemes.

You are truly a virtuoso. Thanks for all your great videos. I've recently acquired some Golden Pheasant crest and tippets. I have found the crest very tricky to work with -- it's very stubborn to align properly. I'm a little confused by your use of the wax on your finger. I've only seen wax used before to temporarily adhere dubbing to a single strand of thread. But you appear to be using it as glue (?) and you apply dubbing to a single strand of thread without using the wax. Could you give us a hint as to your motive for applying the wax? Are you using it like a glue?

      @DavieMcPhail  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dave,
Waxing your thread will help strengthen it as well give it more grip when needed. I specially like to use it most when I'm tying a hackle and wing on as it will also help to stop the thread from slipping...It can be used to help hold dubbing on the thread but I only do this with very fine and short dubbing like mole as I prefer to dub straight onto a clean thread as you may have seen me doing this in most videos..I'm glad you enjoy the videos and thank you for the kind words..

hey Davie, I am trying to learn to tie Atlantic Salmon flies. I would love to tie the classics but some of the ribbing is beyond my ability to copy from a book. I have tried and failed to find an instructor in Maine, J.S.A to teach me. I wonder if there is a book that explains some of the more difficult ribbings. I am speaking of two ribs that go in opposite directions etc. I started this to ask if the proper tinsel is better on the hook for salmon flies. I have noticed you use proper tinsel for the ribs on these flies. I would use mylar for fishing flies. Does the proper tinsel tarnish on the fly if they are displayed. All the best and God bless you. Sean

      Hi Sean,
I mostly learnt myself to tye on the tinsels over time though if I had to recommend a book it would be Pryce Tannatts How to Dress Salmon Flies which I'm sure he will describe how to tye on the tinsel...I have attached a link to it for you to see..
      archive.org/details/howtodresssalmon00prycrich/page/2
Lagartun tinsels are very good for these flies and as far as I believe they don't tarnish...I hope this is of some help to you and please let me know how you get on...
      All the very best Davie...

@@DavieMcPhail Hey Davie, I am reading the text online but I bought a reprint of the book from Amazon. I like to get reference materials if I can so I can go back at any time and re-read. Thanks for the information. I will let you know when I learn to tie the complicated bodies i have seen online. Some of them I saw in your TH-cam video of tied flies. They are really beautiful. I am not sure if you realize you have fans but I am assuredly one of them I have learned so much from you about tying flies. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. When I started tying flies to imitate bugs I didn't realize the bug to tie would bite me. All the best, and God bless, Sean

Lovely work. Well-taught. My only quibble is the pronunciation of the name of the pattern, which should be Skædʒᵻt (Scad-ghit), not Ska-get.

      Hi Wout de Kroon,
I use a Law Vise but unfortunately is no longer made, though someone has closely copied it and it's called a Pro-Vise..I have not personally tried one or seen one up close so I can't give you a review of it...Here is a link for you to see...

      Hi Davie,
      Thanks for your answer.
Sorry spelled your name wrong first time round.
Quite a pricy toy I see, don't think the missus agrees on that this Christmas 😊
Anyway I have a reasonable good vice, but was just curious.
Enjoy watching your flies, and tying them, even caught some trout and char with a few of your patterns in Sweden this year.
      Thanks & Kind regards,
      Wout de Kroon.
      Enjoy the upcoming holidays.
