    Y'know, he brings up a point. When we get a racing simulator, we shouldn't just get a simulation of how it is to drive, but also the simulation of the race. A pace lap, cautions, red flags, marshals, pit stops, MANUAL pit stops, tuning, everything.

      Sérgio Gonçalves I was just thinking that it would be cool to see some of the old games Mac likes. I came from playing games on consoles like SNES growing up and although I did play a few of the classics like Wolfenstein or Doom for instance I never got into a lot of the older PC games that Mack has probably played.

    I'm an assetto corsa fan boy. I bought the game the exact second it showed up on steam. Went into this thinking you'd be all over it, but all the points you hit - were dead on. You nailed it man.
    You could have gone a bit more into the multiplayer / modding side of things, but I understand that you're rating games as they've been developed, rather than trying to justify lackluster effort on behalf of the people who should have got it right in the first place.
    I take off my racing helmet to you and hope you have a great time with that 50% stability control and 20% damage on, ya blockhead.

    Choose lotus T125 S1, that's pretty much F1 ;)
    Also AC was suposted to be really small game with few Italian circuits and few cars, It got very popular so it started growing really fast, I is made by really small team of devs and they are working really hard to add all the important features as pit stops in SP (there are pit stops in MP where most if not all the true race sim fans are playing) Owner of Kunos even makes livestreams of him making the game where he also comunicates with the community, they are really working hard on the game and I think that it is very unfair to call AC arcade game, they created incredible realistic physics engine, aerodinamics are so realistic that moder made a working plane! I usually agree with you that games today are generally very simplified piece of ... but AC is already much more than it supposted to be and they are still updating it to make it better and better :)

    I love your review mate, I forgot about all the simulation details a long time ago, since Geoff Grammond's GP3, that was the last racing game I played like +1000hrs back when I was a teenager. Again, amazing review, nothing beats a good rant, I can tell you love proper racing simulations from your words. I just got back to proper simulation games after a dark age full of codemasters' F1 games that I played like 50 hours, that's nothing for a proper simulation.

    You're completely right about the depth of nowadays's games. I started gaming I think when I was 10, almost 10 years ago. I don't know how it was before my time, but when I look back, I do notice a difference in depth. Especially the so called triple A titles. I used to stick whith the same game for a very long time because you could just feel with how much passion the game was made. Nowadays I feel it's just not worth it for a lot of games (certainly not all of them, but many...) because as you said, it's shallow. Technology is making great progress but effort is going backwards and us, the gamers, are just accepting that... We shouldn't... Anyways that's my opinion.

    I totally agree with you, ignore those who argue with you. When you make a simulator game, you have to focus on the whole simulation, pit stops, flags, the everything. You can't call a game a racing simulator while you're racing in a formula 3 car against a Huayra and a Fiat 500. I want the same thing as you want. I want a game that makes me feel like it's not a game, that's realistic, that's deep, that makes me feel as if I had an overpowered car and a track and a few friends to race with. Even the NFSs could give us much more. Think about their last release, NFS 2015. Imagine if they made the game a driving simulator, with realistic physics and steering wheel support, with H-shifter and clutch and force feedback! Roaming around a city, feeling like a real illegal racer, modifying your cars to that level of detail, customizing it, but also feeling like you're driving a car, not a fucking Mario Kart. Unfortunately they don't think about this, they don't see these details as important, because, frankly, 90% of their customers don't either.

    Mack, you’re wrong about the 360 controller needing assists. I manage fine without them so it can be done. Ideal? No. Adequate? Yes. The one thing that can’t easily be done with a 360 controller is drifting.
    You’re also wrong about there being no F1 cars in the game. None of the crappy modern cars but AC does have the Lotus 98T which is an F1 car from the good old days before the sport turned into a snoorfest. Take that around Nordschleife Endurance if you want some wind blown up your skirt.
    You’re right on about the lack of racing depth. The AC devs have focused on the car and track models and physics to the exclusion of everything else.
    Something you missed was the complete lack of night racing. According to the devs the engine they created can’t handle it so we will likely never see it. But, IIRC, you can turn the car’s lights on and off during the never ending day. Genius.

    Youre so right about older games Mack. Remember TOCA Touring cars? I remember being blown away by that and TOCA2 back in the late '90s. The graphics were blocky by todays standards but the racing was hard and real, you had proper damage and tire wear simulation, even engine faults which you had to come into the pits to be repaired, yes PITSTOPS! No driving game I've used since has come close to that for me.

    Have you checked out how populated the online servers are? Project cars online seems populated enough but I find it is hard to see much info about the event setups until entering the server. Wreckfest has been taking up most of my gaming time lately even though the new build has horrible ffb but online is just so much fun.

  • @davidholman3470
    @davidholman3470 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nice review and I agree with your "rant". Like yourself, I have played lots of games, many of which were racers and what I need to know is this: If this game has the best handling and driving, then why should I choose Project Cars? For me, the aforementioned are paramount. O.K., having pit stops and marshals would have been nice and superior graphics as well(which you say Project Cars has), but which of the two games is the best racing game?
    I only want one and I am more unsure of which to get after watching this review
    I must say that your opinion about today's games developers really hit the mark. If only more reviewers said what they thought. Kudos to you for that.

    Thanks for your honest reviews good sir. I completely agree with your rant, I've always thought there should be a game, as you described, and you start out with a purchased car that you can modify For autocross and work your way up through sponsorships. And/or start at the Karting level and work up from there. with options to go in any circuit like, le man's, F1, WRC, etc. Anyway, great reviews and thanks again. Glad I got Assetto for 27usd.

    I’m sorry, but I’m pretty sure assetto corsa does have pit strategies. Also on select cars you can change downforce setting by changing the degrees of the front and back, and although it doesn’t have stalling which is quite disappointing, but in itself I’m confused as to why you say it doesn’t have it

    Great review Mac! I've put lots of hours into this one since it first launched, but I couldn't agree more about the lack of depth. Hell even the f1 series which is an arcade borderline sim game has pit stops. What we need is this game with these graphics, sounds, and handling. BUT with the depth of online competitive of say iRacing. With an in depth single player career mode. Climb the classes from carts to f1 sleds. I gotta say that this game gave me great butthole pucker factor with my thrustmaster t500rs and cockpit with a 7 gate shifter.
    Cheers mate!

  • @YuckierDragon5
    @YuckierDragon5 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    +Worth A Buy Love your reviews. Always fun to listen to :)
    Regarding your pit stop rant, I have to correct you. There are pit stops in the game which actually can be considered a mini game. When entering the pits during a race, you can see your designated pit box and have to make sure you stop in time. Then you have to select a tyre, opt to refuel or repair damage and press the start button.
    Another thing is that a lot of race classes in real life do not have pit stops. They bring enough fuel and hard enough tyres to just drive the race.
    If you do want to do pit stops in the game with the standard cars then you can increase the amount of tyre wear. I race in a F1 (mod) League for AC and even the hardest tyres would not last for a 50% race, having a good pit stop strategy is necessary.
    Great review and keep them coming :)

    You do come up with some very good points in your game reviews and the thing with game developers now a days is they are either too lazy or just want to rush things out the door as fast as possible and update via the internet with these patches or they just don't do it at all and it is getting annoying and i am fully with you on the games back in the day but of course, like everything now, its all for the money and nothing else much.

    Iv been watchin Empty Box race for a couple years now, & I recently found Worth A Buy's channel which gives honest userbase quick reviews on games. I can see & understand both sides: Worth A Buy is sayin wat a lot of us are thinking in terms of...the level of depth that is missing from a race without having to worry abt pit strategy, gas consumption & a general feeling of being at & experiencing a real endurance event, while Empty Box is saying you don't need pitstop to have a fulfilling race experience when you have an advanced physics engine & a highly detailed racetrack. there really shouldn't be a disagreement bcause both are speakin on 2 very different type of race series. this is what i believe. Kunos will eventually come out with pit for offline play seeing as how they plan to release for console. Rfactor 1, which started my sim experience & has been around for years has an immersion to it because of the depth of simplay options available. Assetto Corsa is building towards that end, but having a small team = limited content release. They will eventually give us a full Sim Experience with assetto corsa, so just have some patience my friends. If only they could give us the Holy Grail of Sim (great A.I.)

    • @WorthABuyreviews
      @WorthABuyreviews  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** It's simple tbh, a proper racing simulation consists of Free practice, adjusting car settings, practice, more adjusting, qualifying, adapting a pit strategy based on circuit and conditions, parade lap, race, implement the pit strategy and hopefully win. Anyone that disagrees with this is NOT I repeat NOT a sim racer, they are a casual racer who thinks overtaking and setting up a car is the full on experience, well I have news, it's only part of it.Empty box may be a brilliant driver, I have no idea as I never heard of him but at the end of the day a racing game that calls it's self a simulator needs all the above or it's NOT a simulator, it's a racing game.

    I'm a HUUUUUGE endurance racing fan and been wishing for a long long time for Gran Turismo or Forza to at least attempt to have a mode based on endurance racing. And it's not just a reaaaaally long race. Pitting is a huge part of it. Things like how many laps you get out of a tank of gas become very important. Double stinting tires. Etc Etc. You did a great job in explaining in a nut shell the dynamics and strategy of the pit stop. I always wondered if I was the only one who felt like it was missing in today's "racing sims".
    And yes, these games need caution flags and pace cars. I can't stand Gran Turismo and Forza because it feels so empty. You're just picking a car and going 5-10 laps around a track for money to buy other cars or tune the ones you got to do it all again.

      Worth A Buy as for your comment about using driving assists with a regular controller, i have to disagree after playing through all of DiRT Rally with all driver assists like traction control set to zero out of 5.

    Mac and everyone else, you should try Stock Car Extreme, if you want good simulator. It's on a old rFactor1 engine, so it's not the most beatiful, but it's a no-bullsh*t-driving sim, just excellent racing. Not perfect, as is no game, but the best I've played personally.

    I got this game in a steam sale especially because it has multiplayer and has oculus support (and was cheaper than project cars). I have only played multiplayer and while you can actually do pitstops with repairs and refuels not one server has more than 10 laps to drive, which is sad. I'd like at least 30 laps with a pitstop, but that isnt the games fault, its the server admins. Mostly, the top 10 of a 24 player race are good drivers, the rest will crash into eachother in the first corner. Mod support is great as well, you can download any car or track for it, which is think is amazing. But yeah, its not a full experience yet, but they do update regularly with new cars, tracks and features.

    Project cars is an arcade game compared to AC with it comes to steering.
    Project cars feels like a refined Shift 2 (same developer btw)
    If you want the best simulator experience tho try Rfactor 2

    Good review. However, also Grand Prix Legend and Nascar from Papyrus were really excellent racing simulators, and are still used by hardcore sim fans to simulate full weekend events, and whole seasons.

      ***** rfactor 2 is odd, its like the opposite of AC, it has a WAY better foundation but core vanilla content is lacking, its like they have dipped into GT3, dipped into BTCC, dipped into formula cars and so on. Wish they would be faster with vanilla content

    you should try rfactor2 (you didn't mention it, so I'm assuming you haven't otherwise you probably would've brought it up)
    physics that are far less showy/arcadey than Assetto Corsa + full race seasons for any series you can reasonably imagine (with 3rd party / user modules)

  • @jeffvella9765

    Mack is right.
    F1 cars with F1 tracks always came with pit stops as a basic in any game, even non simulators.
    Having the devs calling it a simulator without a pit stop, what is it actually simulating?
    Just the driving?
    Which comes back to Mack's point, today's games are not as deep/good as the old ones.
    I remember gran Turismo on PS1 had a pit stop, and it was fun to push the ai or your friends right into the pit stop sign from now an then lol. (those were the days)
    A fkn non Simulator game(with indestructible cards) had a pit stop because they understood that long races like 50 laps ones come with a pit stop strategy.
    This game is not so deep as Mack points out. It is a valid point you should thank him for not call him "just clueless in general".

    I've never played a realistic racing game, but I want to get into one. What's the cheapest good car experience along with a cheapish wheel?

    • @jacobs9318
      @jacobs9318 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Toadsworth! Cheapest wheel the "Driving Force GT", Cheapest with a clutch and six speed manual, the "G27". Best driving experience would be Assetto Corsa or rFactor 2 (Although rFactor 2 is $85 for unlimited online, you get 1 year of online services with the base $45 game). I have heard a lot of good things from rFactor 2, I have not played it myself but did play rFactor 1 and it was a good game.

    GTR 2 / GTR Evolution. Those come closest to the full experience and acceptable gfx in my opinion. Still bought this though, but am wondering why I didn't pick up with gtr+pitstops again until single player pits are included for this....

    A quick question. I don't question you when you think the ability to drive into your specific pit slot should be a thing, but how would you know which slot was yours?

    • @blackmanfu
      @blackmanfu 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just like real life: look for your team colors or there would be a guy out there with a placard. Either that, or do what Project Cars does and it auto-drives you to your stop when you enter the pits.

    Mackkkkkkk. You really shouldn't compare the sounds between the Formula A car and the F1 car from Project cars. It would have been better to make the comparison with the Lotus Exos 125 S1. It has the Cosworth V8 in it ;) anyway great review as always

    "-stop calling these 'simulators' because it's not"
    So true... so damn true.

    • @Torashin1
      @Torashin1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I think your understanding of the work simulator has been warped, my friend. You can simulate anything. Much like the simulators you will hear F1 teams referring to, AC is called a sim because it simulates all the advanced physics that goes on between the car, road and air. It doesn't attempt to simulate the career of a racing driver like other mainstream "simulator" games (whatever the respective profession is) like euro truck sim etc.

    • @JohnSmith-gb8hd
      @JohnSmith-gb8hd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Torashin1
      The point is that AC's physics aren't advanced.

    • @Torashin1
      @Torashin1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well they're a lot more advanced than those in Project Cars, and rf2 is a broken mess, so it seems pretty reasonable to say it's the most realistic sim that you can just buy w/o paying monthly or ridiculous amounts for every single car or track you want to use.

    • @JohnSmith-gb8hd
      @JohnSmith-gb8hd 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Torashin1 What are you smoking? Assetto Corsa is the broken mess here.

    • @Torashin1
      @Torashin1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did you come to that conclusion? Do you have to reinstall AC every time you apply a patch or mod? No, I didn't think so.
