    Ahh the good "no cutscene" and "no quick time events" and "no floaty wobbly controls" games times.... I feel sad and depressed now - we wont see those times ever again....

      bart cbem Saddens me too. There are still some games good games that actually require player input and skill, but those are kind of underrated, you just have to look for them.
      Also I can't wait for Shadow Warrior 2. Who wantta some Wang.

    Seriously dude I'm on your side, I'm 24 years old and have played the first half-life, the first battlefield, the first call of duty, the first medal of honor, command and conquer... and on and on, and seriously I wanna go to war with you, gaming has gone down and so low that today's game are for me way to f*cking easy
    I share your anger lol

  • @BrickiestBrick
    @BrickiestBrick 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The reason games today are so popular is that they target today's kids and teens. Big companies push out more and more sloppy games without putting much effort in them so that kids grow up with these kinds of games, and when they grow up with bad games and never see the light of a game that is done right they simply buy more games that are interactive movies and that don't have any effort put into them. It's a cheap way to make quick money off the mainstream people today by tricking them into buying games that individually take no effort to make, for sixty dollars. Today's kids should be growing up with games like Half-Life, and multiplayer games like Counter-Strike or Team Fortress, rather than the shoot-shoot, no strategy games today like Battlefield or Call of Duty.

    I got Jedi Outcast 2 after your last rant about this and......wow, just died 20 times in a row jumping into a meat grinder! I was starting to think the jump to the ledge above was impossible but nope, it was........I'm now stuck again with no clue where to go, I've died about 100 times so far on normal difficulty and feel totally unworthy to carry a lightsaber lol man this game is hard, I'm quick saving every 2 seconds and all you can hear from my room is me shouting "it's too hard!!!" "what do I dooooo!!?".................
    great game though

    Mack I couldn't agree more with the rant at the end. Its your honesty and passion for the industry that keeps me watching your videos. I've been gaming about 20 years myself. The direction the gaming industry has taken in the last few years in particular makes me sick(Pre-purchase, Early access (more than half of which are a disgrace), DLC's (most of which are ridiculously over priced for what you get ***ding ding ding ding***)). All of these money hungry AAA corporate asshats that suck the soul out of good developers and in-turn potentially amazing games. The only way to change this disgraceful behaviour is to hit em in the only place it hurts them... Please stop rewarding bad behaviour.... Would you give your dog a treat every time he shits on your couch? That literally what people are doing.... Don't forget we hold the power to shape the future of the industry... Think of every dollar you spend on a game today as a 'vote' to how you want games in the future to be made. Sorry to rant in your comments Mack! Keep up with the hilarious honest reviews and I'll keep watching. Cheers :)

      Craig Robertson So true Craig, people need to stop pissing their money on the sub standard so called AAA garbage that is pumped out now.

    • @Cenot4ph
      @Cenot4ph 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Craig Robertson This early access has a very functional side to it, early feedback is powerful for a developer with respect to how gameplay works for players up untill bug smashing. I agree. pre-purchase is to lure in customers with fairy tales, but luckily steam has a refund option build in so this is a bit more difficult to pull off now for studios. Ulitmately, gaming has become serious business and it's no longer "art". See the music industry, the same thing has been happening there for years now. Commerce is bad for art and creative products

    • @-PureRogue
      @-PureRogue 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cenot4ph Not sure if you can say that commerce is problem!
      Commerce stands for income and good art stand for huge income and good future standing!
      I think it is more of peoples in charge problem, wrong peoples in wrong place!Also peoples getting more dumb might be case! :D
      Almost forgot , also to many casual players appearing in gaming industry, if when I started to play I knew only few peoples who where in to it, then now almost everyone and it will get worse , because they have no clue what is good, and what games actually capable of and all over it they do not have soul of real gamer!

    • @mkimask
      @mkimask 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Craig Robertson I agree with you almost completely. If the publishers nowadays taught me one thing - it is that "don't buy our games at full price", because apart from paying 60 euros, you are being fed with DLCs later, that is why I always wait for a GOTY edition, and buy it with a discount. Nowadays when a game comes out you sometimes need more than a 100 euros to get full content, which is just unhealthy and ridiculous
      As for the early access - it is a double edged sword - on one hand you can have awesome stuff like 7DTD or forest, and on the other hand a ton of shit-never-to-be-finished games where early access is used just to have an excuse for tons of bugs and poor quality.

    Has it really been 17 years? Oh man I feel old. I have played this no end of times, but I'm going to buy this version just for the memories, and as a thank you for the Black Mesa team for giving us this lovingly polished version of a great game. I agree it is a sad state of affairs when we have to rely on re-makes to experience a truly great game. Roll on Half life 3....

    The first game to ever give me a good scare. I recently started playing Rust which is filled with teens and a few of them would ask, "So you played CS: Source?" and I'd have to reply, "No, I played Counter-Strike." That was really a great time for gaming - not just the high level of development from the AAA companies but the hard work that the modding community did to extend a game's lifespan. They weren't even getting paid to do it, it was just a free hobby for them.
    There's still mods and TC (total conversions) being developed to this day for titles such as this - I know one from Quake 2 that's been in development since 1998. Just goes to show how much love these games have.

    Half Life is the first game I finished when I got my PC when I was a wee lad in 2007 and it holds up even today despite it's dated graphics. The pacing, memorable set pieces, intuitive gameplay, unique story telling, atmosphere. Half Life is not just a game, it's an experience.
    Rarely do you see this in modern games and that's a shame, with today's technology we should be able to acomplish some magnificent marvels of entertainment. But nope, let's just bump map the pavement and take away player control without warning and throw cutscenes while we're at it.

    Black Mesa... Wasn't this a free mod? I remember when Black mesa came out they said it would be a free mod for half life 2, so now they decided to sell it? When it came out they were also not done yet with the Xen levels, so 3 years later they are still at the same place? Or am I being confused with another mod with the same name? Either way, It's amazing too see, I just hope they'll make a blue shift version. I loved blue shift!

    I love these old school immersive shooters (Half Life, Stalker, F.E.A.R,...), there's just one thing I always hated about them...The movement speed is always so damn high, feels like you are gliding everywhere and you can't really take in all the scenery, but I guess that's just the byproduct of the old arena shooters Dooms, Unreal Turnaments and the likes of the era.

    Mack, you should check out the mod version too. It has WAAY less bugs and the enemies are WAAAY harder there, although, most are unfair as it gives you NO time to counter ( which takes away some Half-Life briliance), like Vorts charging like instantly with too little time to counter. But it's mostly quite well balanced and challenging.

    Mack, while I usually wouldn't ask this, but what is the background music in this particular video? I've watched the compilation of your music in another video but neither of those two seem to match up with the one in this - it sounds perfect with the theme of this video and I'd love to listen to it again on some others.

    • @WorthABuyreviews
      @WorthABuyreviews  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ryuga192 It's all music that I make the same as I did in the video you mention, I just bought a whole load of new sound bytes with the patreon money and composed 3 new background scores, it does not have a name as you can't buy it as a mp3 or wav, it's just for use in Sonic fire pro music creator. I have used this on Gratuitous space battles and used it to very good effect in my "Into the stars" Play Through on mackscorner.

    As an old bloke, I share Macs passion for the oldskool. We both (forgive my presumption Mac) witnessed the gaming industry rise from magazines containing lines of BASIC code (that you programmed and ran yourself) - to EA, Sony and Activision.
    Somewhere half-way between there came a golden age - when games had the technology, the funding and the *passion* behind them - and that made them great.
    AAA coders get paid to do as the bean counters say - not to think or break new creative ground. The indie market has become a messy mix of smash-and-grab and brilliance. Don't get me started on mobile games. It is a sad time for gaming - from a gamers perspective. It's gravy days for those with the money, the formulae and so many willing victims/paying customers or the nefarious indie with a $50000 kickstarter and itchy feet.
    There is hope... Innovation, creativity and hard work does go on - and I give thanks to those devs who bring to us new, fun ways to jump in and get lost for a while. The rest of us should vote with our wallets - and keep them closed to DLC and AAA laziness.
    When I was 13, "Zombie Zombie" (1984, Spaceman Ltd / Quicksilva Ltd) took me to a scary city, filled with zombies - on the ZX Spectrum! Today "7 Days To Die" (2013, The Fun Pimps) puts me on the ground and lets me build a house in Unity 5 splendour.
    There have been advances, for better and for worse.
    Peace and Love, thanks for the great vids Mac! x

    How is the AI in this game? Part of the magic of the original Half Life was the amazing AI and how the soldiers would flank you and toss grenades or retreat when injured. I played the free version of Black Mesa but the enemies lacked any sort of intelligence, how is it this time round with the paid early access version?

    Hey Mac I have been wanting to say this in a comment for a while but thank you so much for helping me choose my games with your honest,humorous picky but in a good way reviews! I love how you have the same view on games as me despite the crazy age difference as I'm 14. But I have always been into good games like portal and many others. I have never been able to finish half life 2 episode 2 tho lol as I have adhd and I get bored after a couple of hours because of my adhd lol. But somehow I completed the others before it. Any way I think you are the best review channle on TH-cam and deserve more respect than you are getting at the moment. One day people will realise that what they are playing is realy utter shit. I understand exactly and compeltely agree. I'm 32 now, but I grew up with Half Life. The starting scene that lead into the story was ground breaking at the time in a world of Quake FPS. As a complete package, nothing has come close to the sum total of experience that Half Life was. The way sound, events, dialog, puzzles, weapons, characters, ambience and everything worked together to create a memorable story and experience has not yet been repeated IMHO

    I can honestly agree with what you said. In fact, I just finished a course on Gaming and I was the only one in there to favor gameplay and actual proper mechanics in a game, whereas the entirety of the class was into QTEs, interactive movies, the Candy Crush's and such shit, playing games on the easiest difficulty only in order to "experience" the bloody story. And since the same shit about "everybody is a Gamer now" came up dozens of times, I was wondering whether the term or the whole concept makes any sense at all anymore.
    Also, is it simply a question of age and what you were raised with? I remember playing Batman the Movie, Turrican, Gauntlet, R-Type, Bruce Lee and the Great Gianna Sisters with kickass soundtracks (even by today's standards) on the C64, just like tons of other games in the 80s, later enjoyed the prototypes of entire genres that did not need any retarded story or cutscenes to be enjoyable. We used to actually PLAY a GAME, not watch it or give an input once on a while. Just finished another run of ROTT (Rise of the Triad) from 1995 last week and it was an awesome gameplay-only experience that got me hooked instantly and made me play through it in a couple of days.
    To me older games are like the stage of a theatre, offering very little to allow the mind to fill the gaps itself with imagination, something that seems entirely lost in today's photorealistic engines and environments. While trying to aim for a presentation as realistic as possible, they completely forgot to leave any room for interpretation it seems.
    I am so glad that there are still gems out there like The Legend of Grimrock 1/2 that take an entirely different approach, although they are, unfortunately, underrated and unknown to the vast majority of players. And in addition to this, it is good to have platforms like Good old Games that offer great oldies for a bargain, not the laughable 20€ the crap catapult Steam demands.

    Brilliant! You are so right and this is exactly how I feel. I remember when games like Half-Life or Thief, The Dark Project came out... I was blown away! What a feeling, what immersion! You could spend hours and hours on just one level trying to figure out what to do. No quest markers, no QTE's, no highlighted objects or any of that nonsense. Just you and the environment. Those were the days and I'm affraid we'll never see anything like that ever again. I mean, who gives a shit the younger generation gets dumber and dumber as long as the right pockets are filled?

    Half-Life was the game that introduced me to the revolution that was 3d graphics cards and immersed me in an adventure so epic that the experience was one I'll never ever forget. One of my favorite things about the game was the impeccable sound design. The rooms sounded like rooms with all the hollow echoes and drips and electric machine hum, the weapons sounded kick-ass right down to the satisfying tinking of shells off the floor. And yes the puzzles could frustrate you a little but they added something that's desperately missing from all the hand holding ADD quest marker games we get nowadays - the thrill of exploration and accomplishment.

    Hey Mack, I have just bought Black Mesa, after owning and having half played half life (makes it quarter life then?), and finishing half life 2 and ep 1. Its a great game, better game than many of the aaa fps that we have since 2010. Thanks for your honest review.

    13yrs old and i think all source games (except day of defeat, i really diddint find that fun) are way batter than most games out there.
    I played COD before playing cs:s, and holy crap i was so sonfused as to how every killed me. then i realized that it takes actual skill to play the cs franchise. got good at cs, then moved on to play valve's other games, and then played half-life 1. and when i played hl1, i was MIND BLOWN even though i thought the graphocs, the sound quality, textures, ragdolls, physics, weere complete shit. i was so mother fucking amazed! i was having such a hard time playing and that's what got me. its not like most games where enemies will iterally sit in one spot, waiting for you to shoot them. or none of that regennig health bullshit. i had to sit on my ass and see how the fuck i was gonna kill 2 vortigauns with a glock, 16 hp, and 15% charge on my HEV. it was absolutely amzing. then i played hl2, which wasent as hard as hl1, but it was insanely awesome. i was pretty sad to know that hl3 wasent a thing. and keep in mind this was 4 years ago, now that black mesa was a thing, i was so happy to play it once again, with some aspects of the game revamped, and incredible graphics. this game, deserves more attention than any other game i have ever played, ever... alongside with the persona franchise ofc :p

    Games nowadays need to cool the fuck down with blowing their money on 1337 graphix and trying too hard to be immersive.
    If there's anything Half-Life does that kicks lots of other FPS games in the ass, it's this magical word called "s-u-b-t-l-e-t-y."
    You don't need explosions every few seconds or nagging characters to remind you of what you're doing. You need to feel like you're in a world that feels.... I don't want to say "real" per se, but something you can immerse *yourself* in, and not be force fed exposition like that terrible-tasting laxative medicine your mom used to give you.
    Ravenholm is a perfect example of this from HL2. It's one of my favorite zombie-themed levels ever. Though Half-Life 2 isn't a horror game by any means, that level scared the shit out of me when I first played it. (I also had a phobia of zombies back then, but still)
    You're not immediately slammed with exposition of why there are headcrab zombies running about the place, but you run across empty headcrab mortar shells that hint at the demise of the people there. Saws and rotten wood litter the town, with blood spattered over the walls, but not much else is added to tell you "You're in creep-hell town, son"
    The priest dude you meet there isn't constantly blipping onto your HIGH DEFINITION HEADS UP DISPLAY telling you he's on his way to meet you at the disco or that he just ate a kielbasa dog, or that you need to press a magic button to progress.
    He periodically shows up to remind you that you're not "completely" alone, he gives you a shotgun, AND he technically saves your life (it's a scripted event true, but it felt well done).
    A couple of times you don't even see him, but rather hear his increasingly deranged ramblings as he fires upon unseen zombies elsewhere.
    You don't even see if he lives after you leave, because he decides to stay in Ravenholm. Though I don't recall the priest guy's name, or if he even have a name, I left the town wondering if it was the right thing to not suggest he come along with you and I still am unsure if he died or not.
    I can't imagine not being able to immerse yourself with "press I key to pick your asshairs" or "QUICK HIT RB OR THE ALIEN WILL SLICE YOU WITH HIS TOOTHPICK LIGHTSABER"
    I could keep going but I doubt anyone would want to read more of me bitching. If you did however, thanks a bunch.

Aye we had them all the time, broken mechanics? Luxury! There were 50 of us, sitting round a BBC B, starving to death, just to make a pixel wobble. And you try telling the youngsters today this, and they won't believe you". Too funny :)

    I don't think those people were lying about not getting stuck. Getting stuck just carries a different meaning to some of us. Getting stuck is more about when you don't know what to do and can't find the solution which never happened to me in this game. However, not knowing what to do and finding the solution a few minutes later happened plenty!
    Other than that, great review on this great game. You do good and honest reviews sir and I appreciate that :)

    I started PC gaming in what I consider a golden age. Some of my first games included Half-Life, Baldur's Gate, Deus Ex, Thief: The Dark Project, Fallout 2, Outcast and Unreal Tournament. These are all hands down classics but at the time I didn't realize how ground breaking some of these games were. HL, Deus Ex and Thief were landmark games. But in many ways, they're yet to be surpassed.
    I recently played Metro: Last Light (very good game) but it still had ''levels'' and pointless exposition in between them that really broke the immersion. Half-Life did away with that shit over 15 years before it! Half-Life didn't tell you, it showed you, the world showed you, not some voice over from Gordon every 20 minutes. ''The experiment went well mental, complete disaster! I've got to find a way to the surface'' Didn't need to do it because the world and the characters (simple as they were) did it instead.
    I could rant on forever but I'm definitely a kindred spirit with Mack on this one.

    Amen brother! The Half Life series was not a cookie cutter game that's for sure. I always called it tunnel vision gaming because sure you could run around a little bit but they forced you to move to the next obstacle finish it and move on to the next obstacle. Where in half life you don't have to breach in through the front door you can walk around to the side window and enter from there. Or you could set a slam outside the door and fire a shot off to make them come running out after you and then they explode! I miss this type of gaming so much.

    Thanks for the review, I'll give this rework a go. Halflife was awesome when it came out, and still is today. It has a vast array of different environments and the story is excellent. I agree that more should/can be done in the way of progression of games. I'm not a Call of Duty fan but I did love Wolfenstein New Order and the new Doom. I’d like to see a reboot of monolith’s Blood or Requiem fallen angel.

    Half-Life golden times :D I remember the time before Half-Life, when I played Dune 2 on Amiga, the game had 5xfloppy+1xfloppy for games save. Elite - Frontier game was on 1 single floppy disc. I am just guessing 95% of these days youtubers have to google what 3,5" floppy is :D Still got my Amiga 1200 with harddrive working, bought in 1996. When I saw Black Mesa, I bought that game because of Half-Life and Half-Life 2 and I will buy again. I like your channel a lot and you have great sense of humor, mostly for adults :D Great game doesnt need to have ultra polished graphics and ultra hardcore polished graphics doesnt make game great. Best luck, I am waiting for more reviews! You deserve much more subscribers, then u have.

    I'll never forget the first time playing Half Life 1. It came as a demo on the front of a magazine. The opening sequence told my 14 year old mind that this was different.. I don't think younger folk will ever be able to fully appreciate the true amazement of a game like Half Life when it first was released.
