THE DROP is a new crime drama from Michaël R. Roskam, the Academy Award nominated director of Bullhead. Based on a screenplay from Dennis Lehane (Mystic River, Gone Baby Gone), THE DROP follows lonely bartender Bob Saginowski (Tom Hardy) through a covert scheme of funneling cash to local gangsters - "money drops" in the underworld of Brooklyn bars. Under the heavy hand of his employer and cousin Marv (James Gandolfini), Bob finds himself at the center of a robbery gone awry and entwined in an investigation that digs deep into the neighborhood's past. Also featuring Noomi Rapace, Matthias Schoenaerts, Ann Dowd and John Ortiz. (C) Fox Searchlight

I thought this film was awesome...loved the slow burn. The tension was unbearable throughout, and the release was incredibly satisfying.
Gandolfini is so great that it's easy to take him for granted, but Hardy was brilliant as well. The guy is a chameleon...he better win an Academy Award before his career is through.
R.I.P. James Gandolfini. You're a fantastic actor.
Anyone else notice how Alonso consistently excludes Gandolfini from any acting praise- 'oh Ann Dowd was great' 'Tom Hardy was great' 'Gandolfini was fine' taking his hipsterdom to an offensive level here
Yeah this review cemented it for me. I do not like Alonso's concept of what is good or flawed in a film, and how that translates into his score. He's certainly entitled to his opinion, but I no longer have any interest in hearing it.
What's his concept of what is good or bad in a film? I don't wanna watch the full thing.
tom hardy... the master of different accents.
Wait for the big reveal that Tom Hardy IS Meryl Streep.
Yes. i agree with Hardys accent! That really stands out. Thst first tine ! Saw Tom Hardy and I was shocked to find hes from England. Also Nadia and the Blonde actor is also from England and I saw him in one of those British historical films Playing the romantic lead. Fascinating the way they do it so well. Not easy Nicole Kidman cannot play an American without her Australian coming through
gives it a 6.2 and says it's worth seeing, but gives it a rotten on rotten tomatoes. pure fucking contrarian.
The movie was EXCELLENT..
Schoenaerts is a Belgian actor who has a very good american accent! You will also see him in "The Loft" later this year.
1. No mention at ALL of Noomi? WTF?
2. I'm getting seriously tired of Alonzo's aversion to violence. Doesn't he realize how lucky he's been to avoid it (if he really has)? Doesn't he know how deeply it infests so many of our lives? Am I the bad guy?
3. Yeah, I probably am. {sigh}
at 6:00, they mention Noomi.
Micheál Healy
Ack! You're right. Barely, but they do mention her name.
*****
Jeez, what's got into you lately? You're getting even nastier than I am.
Hope you're okay.
***** You sound like a Tom Hardy fangirl.
Who cares? Obviously fans.
Christy, once again demonstrating her ability to deliver enthusiastic words with the least enthusiastic tone possible.
Best movie to come along in a long while. I didn't know about drop bars either. And that B'klyn accent, I didn't know he was British and was floored that he's the super villain Bane until two months ago.
Hardy was great and all but this was Gandolfini's movie. He went off leaving us a great performance
It does run kind of slow. But it is worth it. Does Alonso like anything? I remember him liking Movie 43 lol. My whole concern this whole movie was for the puppy. That's all I thought about.
+Shannon Levy When he was gunna give the dog treats and the stops and looked at the crate...I was like noooo please don't let the dog die :(.
Very good movie. Matt is right, it is definitely a slow burn, and takes it's time, but it really pays off. Everybody is great. Tom Hardy is a genius and the character he creates is awesome, but he went just a little too far with the "Brooklyn" accent. Almost into parody, but not quite, thankfully. Special mention to Matthias Schoenaerts (the guy from "Bullhead"). His character is so f*cking unpredictable and palpably dangerous. The ending payoff, as Matt says, is awesome.
Alonso Duralde does NOT understand movies. The only thing that matters is the execution. Was it well done. Bang! That's it. Every genre we have seen it a thousand times. The Drop was outstanding.
6.2? 6.2?! Good lord.
I thought it was anything but cliche. Awesome film and loved every moment
I've commented on this movie before and will do so again. I give it a "10." All the performances are extremely good, especially Tom Hardy's. I'm glad the reviewers recognized Mr. Ortiz's performance, which I feel was excellent and so realistic. From my point of view, there was not one extraneous scene in this tightly directed, fascinating character study. I'll take "slow burn" every time in lieu of the overly violent, fast-moving CGI movies that seem to be the norm these days.
noomi repaces accent was all over the place in this. Was she supposed to have a straight brooklyn accent?
Is this 2014's Drive? It seems like it is.
More like 2014s On the Waterfront
What is it exactly you want to see?
they obviously missed the part where the bass is dropped
I'm excited for this movie I trust Matt
Guess what I said about Alonso before was way out of order, huh? SMDH
Fuck james gandolfini was a hot bear. RIP.
I liked this movie the first act feels like a 2 story part where the subplot overpowers the main plot of the movie, the character development is good I love that cute dog!!! The 2nd act is slow but its interesting and the 3rd act is good. The only character I hate is that psycho guy his character doesn't make sense in this movie. I'll give this film a B-
Why haven't these guys done the guest yet
I need to see this. First "Her" and "The Drop" is next on my list
Excellent review .
Just saw it. Definitely on Matt's side on this one :)
Mixed feelings. It sounds good, it's got a great cast, but I'm kind of burned out on gangster movies.
It's more of a character story. It was originally titled Animal Rescue.
Damn, Alonso came in harsh on this one.
Alonso Duralde......go opposite anything this guy says. He has 0.0 understanding of movies. The Drop: great acting, gritty, constant tension and the friggin precious doggy. I think Alonso is lacking a soul as well understanding.
matt needs to give it up
The Godfather is familiar, Star Wars is familiar, all superhero movies are familiar. Unless you are watching Christopher Nolan.......All movies are familiar. This guy has thoughts that are NOT well thought out which makes him the worst, laziest type critic.
Like these vids and this channel, but tired of seeing/hearing Alonso.
I havent seen this movie, and I already know the dog is dying. Why Hollywood, why!!?
And because of that you aren't going too see it?
Enrique Godinez Nah, I´m just saying. I'll check it out for sure.
You're wrong lol.
The dog lives. Some other people, hmmm ...... not so much.
Not as smart as you think you are lol
Usually when Alonso says a way lower score than the others I disagree with him but this movie I totally agree. Ya the performances are good but it was just a little too lackluster and familiar to me. The twists were pretty good but like Alonso said it was a little too late for me. Still worth checking out though especially since it's gandolfinis last role. 6.8/10
Didn't like it. 1st 5 min odd, slow. I couldn't get through it
KP Only You really missed out. This movie is about boiling tension. It just keeps on tightening up til its almost hard to breath. I honestly thought it was one of the best movies of 2014.
Alonso would never like the opera.
Lol..
I loved it
Both Tom Hardy and James Gandolfini are great, unfortunately they had absolutely nothing to work with. Besides those 2 actors and the cinematography, this movie is unbelievably boring. It just drags and drags and drags and never fucking goes anywhere.
This movie was boring as fuck!!!!
Because your an idiot.
+kaiser soze ....I see your a man of great intelligence "Kaiser Soze".... oh by the way.... YOUR MOTHER!!!!
makeufamousNDZ im sorry i know your comment is a year old but you sound like a fucking idiot.
