This movie is much better than their ratings. I agree that it can be plodding at times but all 3 of the main actors were outstanding. Also the use of sound and dynamics really helped create the mood and tension. Plus the screenplay is fantastic the way all the pieces are there but nothing is directly spelled out.
I happen to disagree with the guy that said that there was too much wrestling shown. It's a drama about wrestlers recruited by a millionaire wrestling fan for a wrestling team to train at a wrestling training center for the Olympics, and guess what they're going to be doing there? Wrestling. When I saw Foxcatcher, I didn't see a problem with it, likely because I myself was a former amateur wrestler so I knew how the sport worked and I thought that that was one of the most intense moments in the film.
What's interesting is that Bennett Miller won the best director award at Cannes. It could be a strong contender for best director as well for the Oscars.
Max X In the past. I obviously can't speak about the 2015 Oscars because they haven't happened. There's always a chance for patterns to change. But Bennett Miller won't win. I can guarantee you that.
I agree with Ben this film drags on for so long I dozed off for a few minutes and I never do that in films but this does get boring in spots, the acting is on point from everybody and there's no doubt it will scoop awards
I can already tell "Foxcatcher" is one of the best films of 2014. Look @how the WTF cast is discussing and debating about the picture. I'm going to check this movie out sometime soon! Also, it's really great to see Carell in a much more serious role. We first laughed @ him in his previous pictures and now, I feel a lot of ppl will start to take Steve Carrell as an actor more seriously after seeing FC...
I put myself in the catagory of completely missing this as I watched it, but watching this video I *think* they mean the part where Du Ponte comes in the middle of the night / early morning knocking on mark's window to get him up for training, then remember the scene with the actual training ? It goes all slow motion with very sinister music playing and like a progressive close up on Mark's face as he's lying on the mat. I think at the time I just took it as indicating the trouble Mark was having as a result of Du Ponte getting him into cocaine, but after watching this video was that meant to be implying that there was some kind of sexual abuse by Du Ponte done to Mark ? If that's not what they mean then I'm not sure. If it is then it kind of makes sense and fits in with how their relationship turns sour - perhaps Mark rebuffed his advances and that's what made Du Ponte turn on him ? (going from 'this point to this point' as alonso puts it)
xXM1G42OzkikSC0pZle M8b8grz420M1GXx There performances are not even REMOTELY the same in any sense. The only reason people said they got a Bale in American Psycho vibe was because of that one laugh at the end of the trailer. Other then that they were different every single way. Jake was much less funny and much more realistic and less cartoony. They also talked in very different patterns and also had completely different attitude, personality, and just about everything else you can imagine. Obviously you have not seen the movie, or you would not say something so retarded.
Michael Colby Well, it's hard to be as funny as Bateman when your movie isn't a comedy. And Gyllenhaal's frantic and overly descriptive delivery screams American Psycho.
Just from the trailer, I agree with Matt on Carrell's performance. He doesn't look or sound natural. Maybe that's how the real DuPont spoke, but no one knows that, so there was no reason to attempt such an odd, distracting vocal pattern, other than to impress people who think that's what acting is about.
Ronin Dave How many people have seen the video, much less remember enough to notice and care if Carrell is accurate? After viewing the video, I think it makes the performance worse because it is not really accurate. There are pauses in DuPont's speech, but at natural points where he is thinking whereas Carrell seems to just pause randomly.
TheTruthiest what? It's not about people seeing that video but that it was part of what carrell based his voice and mannerisms on and remember that was a propaganda piece. We don't see his obvious darker side that other people would have seen that Carrell and the director would have drawn from.
There is at least one air vent because there are air vents everywhere. In addition, even where there are no air vents, there is still air. It's one of those inescapable facts of life.
The only thing I knew about this film was that there was wrestling and Steve Carell. Nothing else. I think the fact I had no idea what was coming made the experience even better. It's an awesome film regardless. One of a kind.
i think it has to do with some sexual harassment, and Mark refusing...the real Mark Schultz in an interview states how John Du Pont had gay tendencies. Supposedly he once got angry with Mark on an occasion where John caught him with his girlfriend in the house. John then pointed the gun at Mark's gf and threatened to kill her, followed by Mark getting between the gun and his gf as a shield. There is also claims of sexual assault by John on wrestling team members at Villanova University.
The more I think about this the more I'm conflicted: I know that movie critics are useful and can be a help, but the premise of a job that entails critiquing things you couldn't replicate is interesting. They always criticize story telling, so does that mean that these people are the certified kings of what a good story is? If so why don't they make a movie that would meet their own expectations? But they don't. Would be a bizarre situation if all the people in the world who were amazing judges of story telling became movie critics and not authors or directors. Not necessarily a comment specific to this video or really even trying to hate, but something to think about, well for me at least
In my opinion this was a 5. It was one of my most anticipated film of the year, and I was let down by it. Sure, the acting was great. But how much does that matter if the story is so tedious? Enjoyed watching your guys' review, though! :)
***** Really, does the spelling matter? You understood the comment right? So how does pointing out any typographical errors make you look smart? Secret: This is what kids do when they have nothing else to offer. Maybe I'll write a novel about undereducated moronosity.
You'd write a novel about it just because someone poked fun at your spelling mistakes? That's rather odd because other than it being hypocrisy at its best, you calling him childish is no different than you overreacting to it. You basically just proved his point. You're a novelist ;)
I can appreciate that pace can and often must be manipulated to emphasize certain aspects of the film, but holy fuck sticks. I did not find Carrell creepy in the slightest. His awkwardness (to me) was reminiscent of Michael's from The Office, and in the end I found this film to be inextricably boring. The end, while containing approximately 5,000,000 timed more events than the rest of the movie combined, provided me with no emotional catharsis. Two minutes of empty tragedy do no make up for two hours of me checking my watch to see if I can politely leave the theatre yet.
I never liked Steve Carrell before, but his portrayal of DuPont was so twisted and loathsome that he was at the top of the acting charts on this one. (DuPont just died in prison after 24 yrs,he got off easy).Just goes to show that massive amounts of money are useless in the hands of some that are born with a silver spoon. No one could love or respect that clown-heir.Apparently the Marines and his extensive education did zero for his character. You can't buy that.
This movie was terrible. It was soooo long and boring. There was a severe lack of dialog and dead time. Super dull movie, that had nothing really to say.
People are comparing this film to There Will Be Blood in terms of it's tone and pace. My God it better not be like that overrated snorefest. Please someone tell me it's not like that.
It's a tad slower than There Will Be Blood in that Foxcatcher barely had a score to move things along like PT Anderson's film. Foxcatcher's slow fog like pace was utilized for a simmering tension that would ultimately lead up to the expected tragic ending. I found it to be mesmerizing and was completely on board. But it may not be your thing.
***** Actually I like art films a lot and I don't need your fucking snide here. I am just a big fan of TDK trilogy and I've had my name for a long time. I was sharing my opinion on There Will Be Blood, which I don't like at all. If you want a 2007 masterpiece watch No Country for Old Men. And if I was going to make my username my favorite film it would be The Shawshank Redemption or American Beauty. So once again, please don't be ignorant and attempt to insult me just because I like or don't like a film. I still want to see Foxcatcher, I just wanted to know if it was similar to There Will Be Blood.
I thought Channing Tatum had the personality of a potato in this. And I don't get why Mark Ruffalo was up for best supporting actor for this. I mean really? Steve Carell was great. It seems they got some facts messed up though. The end didn't make sense with the plot. They should have explained why he did it.
Shannon Levy It was based on a true story. To find out why he did it they would have had to to dig up John Du Pont's corpse and harvested his brains. All actors including Tatum did a brilliant job of conveying the story and it's meaning. Please do your research before writing comments like that, for own sake.
I thought "Foxcatcher" was too trudging for my taste, but great acting nonetheless. Check out my review here: phtintle.wordpress.com/2015/01/08/foxcatcher-intrigues-but-rarely-excites/
place change the title of the video. calling this a review is misleading; it is more of a discussion. This format has its purpose but don't make it into something it's not

i really dont understand the whole pace issue. i think this is one movie that the pace is justifiable, it helps to build that unnerving factor.
What's interesting is that Bennett Miller won the best director award at Cannes. It could be a strong contender for best director as well for the Oscars.
All of the directors that won at Cannes did not win at the Oscars.
Max X In the past. I obviously can't speak about the 2015 Oscars because they haven't happened. There's always a chance for patterns to change. But Bennett Miller won't win. I can guarantee you that.
Mark Ruffalo was absolutely incredible in this, possibly the film's best performance
Channing Tatum in a singlet wrestling? Sign me up!
It's so nice having all of you back! I missed our time together...I'm so lonely
I sure do love Cahnning Tatum.
I agree with Ben this film drags on for so long I dozed off for a few minutes and I never do that in films but this does get boring in spots, the acting is on point from everybody and there's no doubt it will scoop awards

I am really looking forward to this movie. It looks intense. I love Mark Ruffalo.
What are you guys alluding too starting at the 4 minute mark?
4:00 Does anyone know about which scene they are talking about?
I put myself in the catagory of completely missing this as I watched it, but watching this video I *think* they mean the part where Du Ponte comes in the middle of the night / early morning knocking on mark's window to get him up for training, then remember the scene with the actual training ? xellestar Ah yes, that makes sense. Thanks for the explanation!
Christy, I know you will NEVER read this, but I'll ask anyway. Who do you chose between Keaton in Birdman and Carell in this?
KEATON
Jake Gyllenhaal pwns them both
Michael Colby Jake Gyllenhaal just copied Christian Bale.

I agree. I'm sure Carrell does a fine job in the movie, but I'm more interested to see Tatum and Ruffalo.
That is how DuPont was--very odd and very creepy. When the story broke, there was plenty of footage of him. Carell studied the guy's mannerisms.
no one knows that? DuPont was weird and we have video footage of his voice and mannerisms.

Ben must have been beat up by a wrestler. He always talks shit about the sport.....just like the old TYT Sports clip.
Hey, does is the audio strange for everyone else. It almost sounds like there is an air vent.
Mine sounds normal.
Oh, it might just be my headphones

What is Steve Carrell's accent in this film, it sounds strange, or is that just how John Du Pont talked.
I've never even heard of this movie...
Alonso the tomato
What? The jury is in on Channing Tatum and he's a good actor? I missed this.
Why is this movie not in Vegas... I hate the fact that I can not find it anywhere here in Vegas...
Just saw the movie can anyone tell me what they think is being implied during the scene when Carrel gets Tatum in the middle of the night

altec360 What?
Channing got my respect for this one.
i didnt like the girl with the beard review
spoiler
I saw the film
what were they talking about the mid point of the film
what was implied
Spoilers
I think they were referring to the implied homosexual relations between Du Pont and Mark Schultz.
thanks but I dont remember anything of the sort
I can only conclude from the low scores that nobody here is a student of psychology. There is *a lot* going on in this movie.
I was hoping Matt would say that Carell was literally the weakest out of three, since the other two are strong.
He was convicted of the murder in the third degree of his friend Dave Schultz, an Olympic champion freestyle wrestler.
I can appreciate that pace can and often must be manipulated to emphasize certain aspects of the film, but holy fuck sticks. I did not find Carrell creepy in the slightest. Movie gets a 8.7 from me, few places where there were unnecessary scenes which slowed the pace Alot.
Some films are nothing without the actors
Steve Carrell's nose is what made his performance.
it pissed me off the way tatum and ruffalo walked in this movie, like bears or something LOL but I understand it was because the were wrestlers
CAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHN-ning

Moneyball and Capote were both kind of slow and plodding as well. Seems critics like this director but he's not very entertaining.
