I know it made for a fun tv moment, but like how you say immunity wins are sacred, so too were successful idol plays at that point. Dan played that round exactly correctly, but was eliminated by a new advantage that he had no reason to believe would be in the game.

@@myperspectiveisimnotblind except the concept of idols existing, was never a surprise. Jeff made a point of announcing in season 11 and 12 that idols exist. So people could reasonably plan for existence of idols. You can't plan for something you've never seen on the show before. Its like if you get the numbers for a vote and someone bust out an advantage that says "my vote count for 4 votes". You'd probably think wtf

Even though the do or die twist never eliminated anyone, it is, in my opinion, the worst twist ever. It literally only exists to eliminate someone over a trivia murder party mini game
That twist is stupid, but I think what stops it from being the worst is the fact that the players at least had a say in it. Although both Deshawn and Lindsey survived it, both were incredibly dumb for putting themselves in that situation in the first place.
I think the worst part of the hourglass was they could have added some legit suspense with it if Erika was ALSO immune to being voted out. That way, it would feel more like the train dilemma where she has a choice on who she wants to burn with it. But since she wasn't, she'd obviously pick the option that ensured she was safe going into the next round.
I feel like the first ever Tribe Swap in Survivor: Africa was snubbed from this list. Three players from each tribe go on a "journey" only to find out that they're not going back to their own camps.
hate to be the "welllll acttualllyyyyy" guy, but 44 wasnt the first time producers made or offered fake idols, just first time they were taken/accepted. waiter/caretaker to nuns/part time model Debbie was given the option of a fake model during her exile with Cochran
Domenick also found the fake idol David planted for Jay in Millennials vs Gen X, and Domenick used it to convince people that with that fake idol in addition to his real idol, he had two idols.
Thailand should have taught us not to do this to players. We lost getting a good flip and seeing a wonderful villain story and instead we got a boring Pagonging and Shii Ann not being the full character she deserved to be. And it’s always this bad. Survivor needs to let the players play, not try to force these moments.
Three things about the hourglass that make me hate it even more than the obvious flaws: 1. The way Jeff explains it to Erika, he's very clearly trying to influence her (already obvious) decision. He essentially says that she can either seize the initiative and take control of her destiny, or passively drift along to a fate that's been chosen for her. 2. Why is the mechanic _smashing_ the hourglass? You're not supposed to smash them, you're supposed to flip them. My aunt actually tried to defend it by saying that smashing it is more visually interesting than flipping it. But you know what's less visually interesting than flipping it? Telling people that you smashed it when no one was looking. 3. Erika's speech as she swings the hammer. Clearly the camera crew told her she had to say something, when really the choice was so clear that no explanation was necessary. Nevertheless, what she came up with was just . . . sad.
i genuinely can't tell if producers just chose the most boring possible erika confessionals to show or if she was just shockingly bad at them (despite clearly being an intelligent and articulate person) because a lot of them were uh. yeesh

For another, Erika seems to be one of a handful of players about whom it is widely assumed that there’s a wealth of rich, exciting content deliberately left on the cutting room floor. I'm so glad you, even jokingly referenced how close up the confessional cam was in Edge of Extinction. For so long, I thought I was the only one who noticed it in that and Winners at War. And if Survivor turned into Mario Party for seasons 41 and 42...does that mean Probst is Bowser?
I have been watching some Survivor Australia and the production twists there are even crazier - Go to tribal council but need to win a challenge to vote. Go to tribal council as a tribe but insert individual immunity contest, Go to tribal council but vote to send a player to the other tribe instead of out of the game. I guess it is harder to fill 49 days with suspense.
I actually like the outcast twist more than RI or the edge since the players who come back in A) only can re-enter pre-jury phase and B) have to be voted back in rather than just win a challenge.
The hourglass twist freaks me out - not the consequence of it but that it involves intentionally breaking glass on a beach... just no... don't do that!
I definitely thought when Devon had the "advantage" placed in his bag when it turned out someone had used the advantage against him was going to be on here. Also, the "The Jerks in German" joke is so underrated
I also like the fake merge twist (and I like to think a good chunk of the production team that knew about the twist were laughing like the maniacal masterminds they were being), but it ended up taking Thailand and sinking the rest of the season. Shii Ann getting axed due to this twist ruined what could have been a really cool setting where she helped get rid of her old tribe and maybe even win the season depending on how everything else went. I still think Thailand has one of the best variations of the theme song to date however, and that won’t be changing anytime soon xD
The do or die ones are some of the worst, and the only reason it isn't as bad as it could be is because everyone got a heads up to not even compete to outright avoid it, and that it miraculously got the one in three chance to survive both times. Lindsay was so desperate to beat John, for seemingly no reason cause it could have easily blown her game by destroying her alliances numbers whether John was taken out anyway. It was just a very strange descision built on an intense rivalry she had with him. And Deshaun? I can't even remember why he competed.
next year: top 5 horror scenes in survivor. cirie and ami crab hunting, machete mat, the actual horror movie stock music that plays during shonee's boot tribal in au HvV... theres more im sure of it thats just off the top of my head

For the hourglass in Survivor 42, I thought they were flat out NOT going to tell Rocksroy about the hourglass and that he would have to figure it out entirely on his own. It still would've been a tad unfair but at least it wouldn't have been so blatantly obvious, and if he did figure it out on his own that he had to smash it, the safety could have been a justifiable reward. But nope, they just had to tell him ultimately turning it into a carbon copy of the twist in 41. You're right, it was essentially Mario Party but more specifically, during Chance Time!
Honorable mention: Survivor 45 swap they had a challenge set up, and it looked like it was going to be a hero challenge for reward. But nope swap time.
9 times out of 10, whenever Swap, Merge or something like the Family Visit in WAW, there's a challenge set up to curve expectations. Its also worth noting that in this era in Survivor Reward challenges are rare, so most of the time you expect it to be an Immunity Challenge, yet the tribes who one last time, didn't bring statue. Regardless with this new era filled with Superfans and Game bots, this situation shouldn't be a real surprise outside of screen grabbing reasons.
Trish and Lil agreed to vote each other in and Ryan S. had a great relationship with Lil. The only person who might have voted Lil back into the game to not deal with her on the prejury trip was Nicole.

Burton/Michelle didn't vote her, Ryan S. was obviously her closest friend out there, Trish and Lil had an agreement to vote each other, and both of them upheld this. That leaves Nicole who is the only possible person who could have voted Lil in solely on not wanting to deal with her on the prejury trip.
this isn't really related to the video, but i really hope that the people who made the merge in 45 make the jury. its a final 13 with a final 3. just have 10 jurors, not 8, don't go 2 votes with no jury. i feel like if you make the merge, you make the jury. i get it, if you survive a merge that shows your adaptability and social skills, but i just don't want a 7-1-0 jury vote again.

I have 0 sympathy for the players in that situation, you can't just ASSUME the state of things, the specifics are extremely important. Players have the freedom to question Probst "Are we merged?", players can also play intelligently enough to not burn their former allies the moment they think the merge hits, they can still pretend to be on their old side but secretly be working for the other one. Them playing sloppy isn't the fault of the fake merge - it's their fault for being lazy and complacent.
ShiiAnn fans still think she would've won the season if not for this deception. It was literally the difference between her missing out on the jury or being jury member #3
I dont think for a second she would have won. But she would have had a much deserved deep run and better character development. It would have made Brians inevidable win feel more satisfying because at least SOMEONE else was playing for themselves too. But watching Shii Ann try to "outwit outplay outlast" only for it to blow up in her face in a way she couldnt have anticipated would have done nothing but discourage aggressive gameplay in later seasons (remember how boring the gameplay in All Stars was?) This was only season 5. Far before survivor felt just like a bad game of mario kart. Strategy used to mean something.
remember when Survivor to trick us that 44 and 45 were tough seasons and in 44, two people get themselves injured due to their over excitement and in 45, two people quit because their experience wasn’t what they thought it would be…..yeah me too
